Welcome Founded in 1891 and situated 10 miles south of Winchester, Corhampton Golf Club is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Hampshire countryside, enjoying stunning views across hills, valleys and woodlands. The course plays 6,398 yards off the white tees, 6,088 off the yellow tees and 5,800 off the red tees. A combination of natural contours, mature woodland and artfully placed bunkers provides a test for low and higher handicappers alike. Speak to some of our more longstanding members and you will find our course is in as immaculate condition as they can ever remember. We are proud of our reputation as a friendly and welcoming club and visiting golfers can expect a warm welcome in our spacious clubhouse, where a well-stocked bar and first class homecooked food provide a perfect accompaniment to your round of golf.
We have Spooners, a halfway hut, which provides hot and cold drinks, food and confectionery all year round. The course and its facilities are available to visitors from Monday to Friday throughout the year with specific Society days being Mondays and Thursdays. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Corhampton for what we are sure will be a memorable visit.

The Course Corhampton provides a fair test to golfers of all abilities. While it may not be as long as some courses, at 6,398 yards off the white tees it is far from a pushover either. You have to be able to hit the ball straight off the tee or you find yourself amongst the trees and having to chip out sideways. The greens are true and play fast, so you also need to be very accurate with your approach shots. A major feature of the course is its free-draining nature, which ensures first class playing conditions all year round. The finish is challenging, with holes 15, 16 and 17 all being par 4s in excess of 400 yards and among the tougher holes on the course. But there is a par 5 to finish which offers a realistic birdie chance and the opportunity to end the round on a high.
That is Corhampton in a nutshell, difficult in places with holes to test even the most proficient of players, but not so daunting a test that it drains all enjoyment from the round. It is a similar story around the turn. The 8th is stroke index 1, but should you struggle here the spirits should not flag because there are two immediate chances to earn shots back. The 322yard par-4 9th is stroke index 17 on the card and the 479-yard par-5 10th is regarded as the easiest hole on the course.

The Club and its History Golf was undoubtedly played on Corhampton Down more than a century ago, but the first traceable record of the club’s institution dates back to 1891 and the Royal and Ancient Club ruled that we must accept this year for our centenary. The club was first mentioned in the 1897/98 Golfing Annual’s directory, sandwiched between Cootamundra Golf Club, an Australian course described as “interesting” and Cork, illustrating the world-wide following enjoyed by the game even in those far off days. However, the first mention of the club’s institution appeared in the 1906/07 edition - and here is the entry: “CORHAMPTON GOLF CLUB. Instituted 1891. Annual subscription ten shillings; number of members 32. Hon. Secretary R.B. Campbell-Wyndham, Corhampton House, Bishops Waltham. The course of nine holes on Corhampton Down is a mile-andthreequarters from Droxford Station (L. and S.W. Ry). Only seven 8
holes are played on Saturdays.” Cricket was already well-established on Corhampton Down when the first sketchy golf course was laid out - and it was the all-important Saturday cricket fixture which meant that golfers had to skirt the boundaries of the ground where the willow was being struck and play just seven holes. Cricket was regularly reported in the Hampshire Chronicle. For example in 1885 it was reported that the Corhampton Valley Club had been reorganised. The ground on the Down had been “judiciously chosen and relaid”. A cricket pavilion was built and remained there until it was destroyed by fire during World War II. Sadly no public record
of the official formation of Corhampton Golf Club can be traced and it is a matter of great regret that none of the club’s minutes or other documents leading up to World War II are in the club’s possession. This has certainly raised the handicap when researching the story of the early days of this splendid club. Old copies of the club rules record that permission to play on the Downs was given to members by Mr. Wyndham-Long, who owned the freehold of the land. It is clear that golf at Corhampton started in a very modest way, with membership of about 30. Right up to the First World War there were no artificial bunkers, although no doubt plenty of other hazards existed, and the only attention the fairways received was from the sheep which grazed on the course. You could call it golf in the raw!
After the Great War the club started to make real progress and soon the days of uncut fairways and miniature greens were left behind. The course was remodelled and turned into nine quality holes. In 1932, with the arrival of professional greenkeeper Bert Dedman, the course was reshaped into the nine-hole course which was to remain virtually unchanged for more than 40 years. Corhampton gained an enviable reputation as a friendly club where visitors could be assured of a warm welcome and a good sporting round of golf. Few courses could claim such a magnificent setting, with views across the lovely Meon Valley and long panoramas descending towards the Solent and the New Forest. A rich variety of wild flowers and birdlife added to the pleasure.
9
The Club and its History continued When World War II was over a great deal of dedicated, not to mention back-breaking work put the club back on its feet - the ninth hole had been put under the plough - and in 1950 the club acquired the freehold of the course and built a new clubhouse. At about that time the entrance fee was £2.2s., the men’s subscription £3.3s, ladies £2.2s. and junior members £1.1s. Green fees were 2s.6d on weekdays (2s.0d. after 5pm) and 5s. 0d on Sundays for a full day or 3s.6d per round. As the years went by new courses sprang up in an attempt to meet the ever-growing popularity of the game and in 1973 Corhampton members decided to “go 18” and build a spanking new clubhouse. There was disappointment when the club was outbid in a battle to buy additional land and patience was required to surmount planning problems. It was decided to redesign and extend
10
the course within its own 88 acres, based on plans drawn up by former Club Captain, Bill Wilson, who was later to become Course Manager. Work started in July that year and involved construction of eleven new greens and tees, new bunkers, and reseeding a large fairway. Play continued throughout the time work was under way. The year 1975 was undoubtedly the most significant in the club’s long history. The new-look par-68 course, measuring 5,932 yards, was opened by Club Captain George Davis and this momentous occasion was followed by the opening of the new clubhouse by Bernard Hunt, then British Ryder Cup team captain. He unveiled the plaque situated inside the lounge and bar area. 1975 also saw the arrival of our popular professional John Harris, who was to become such an asset to the club and a friend to members.
Turning the course from nine to 18 holes cost the club £25,000 while work on the clubhouse together with furnishings and fittings ran up a bill of £55,000. Financing both projects was largely borne by the members, each of whom was called upon to put down a repayable £50 deposit. In addition 40 members paid £500 apiece for a 20-year membership. Having made the big breakthrough Corhampton pressed on with further developments which have improved the quality of the course and the amenities enjoyed by members and visitors. A borehole was sunk into the deep chalk to provide a head of water for an automatic sprinkler system - and the clubhouse was enlarged in 1983. In 1988 members took the important decision to buy more land so that the course could be reshaped and extended to measure approximately 6,500 yards. The course would have two loops of
nine holes, with a large practice area and an extended car park. The new holes were to be numbered 12, 13, 14 and 15, leaving the celebrated 16th “valley” hole - one of the outstanding holes in Hampshire - unchanged. The extension was landscaped by Hawtree and Company, golf club architects, who have designed many famous courses at home and abroad. Corhampton celebrated its centenary in 1991 with a week of celebrations. Among the highlights was a centenary ball where television celebrity Leslie Crowther was the main speaker. There was no golf on the Sunday afternoon of that week as instead a select Corhampton XI played cricket against leading celebrities from the Lord’s Taverners.

Tour the Course Before you visit why not enjoy our course guide, which includes helpful tips from our PGA Professional Ian Roper and his Assistant Professional, Matthew Tryhorn. Hole 1, 374 yards, par 4 This opening par 4 requires an accurate drive through a narrow gap in the trees. The green, which slopes from back to front, is protected by bunkers right and left. Hole 2, 382 yards, par 4 This hole plays deceptively long and demands a good drive through the trees at the 210-yard mark. For shorter drives there is plenty of trouble left and right. A good uphill second shot into the raised green is needed for a birdie or par on this 382-yard par 4.
Hole 3, 340 yards, par 4 The second shortest par 4 on the course, this 340-yard hole requires pin-point accuracy off the tee for long hitters. Shorter drives should favour the left-hand side of the fairway and play short of the trees. A vicious slope just in front of the green will kick the unwary shot forward through the right-to-left green and over the back. Hole 4, 194 yards, par 3 The first of four par 3s, this 194-yard hole has a two-level green with a steep bank to the right-hand side and over the back. Guarded by bunkers on each side, shots towards the green will gather from left to right.
13
Tour the Course continued Hole 5, 417 yards, par 4 This 417-yard par-4 features a wide fairway which slopes from left to right. The ideal tee shot will favour the right of the fairway and the second shot needs to be long enough not to catch the slope into the bunker. There is a very steep bank on the right of the green. Hole 6, 163 yards, par 3 This tough par 3 of 163 yards demands a lot of accuracy. A wellstruck shot just inside the right-hand bunker won’t be far away. Hole 7, 484 yards, par 5 The first of three par-5 holes, the seventh measures 484 yards and features a fairway which runs from right to left so tee shots should favour the right side. The front of the green is protected by a lone yew tree.
14
Hole 8, 413 yards, par 4 Stroke index 1, this par 4 is 413 yards. The ideal drive will finish on the left-hand side of the fairway, leaving a long second shot into a narrow green surrounded by trees. Hole 9, 322 yards, par 4 At 322 yards this is the shortest par 4 on the course. A straightforward hole, a good tee shot to the left of the fairway should set up a definite birdie chance. Hole 10, 479 yards, par 5 The second of three par 5s, this hole is 479 yards. An accurate tee shot will avoid the trees on the right and the bunker on the left. Further fairway bunkers either side should be easily avoided with a good second shot to set up a birdie chance.
Hole 11, 171 yards, par 3 Pin-point accuracy is essential on this 171-yard par 3. With trouble left and right, a well-struck tee shot will swing to the right on this fast green.
Hole 13, 175 yards, par 3 The final par 3 of 175 yards is well protected by bunkers and requires one more club than the yardage suggests. Missing the green makes a par difficult.
Hole 12, 387 yards, par 4 On arriving at the tee, the first sight is of the downs and the Dundridge Valley. Two large bunkers guard the turn on this right-hand dogleg par 4. The ideal shot is to the left of the first bunker - unless you think you are good enough to carry the corner!
Hole 14, 361 yards, par 4 This dogleg right hole is a 361-yard par 4. Favour the left of the fairway to avoid the rough. Bunkers on the front and on either side protect this undulating green.
15
16
Tour the Course continued Hole 15, 419 yards, par 4 At 419 yards this is the longest par 4 on the card. The wide fairway offers a big target, but avoid the cross bunker. Favour the right side of the green.
Hole 17, 404 yards, par 4 The seventeenth is the final par 4. A dogleg left of 404 yards, the tee shot should finish up the right side to give the easiest approach to the narrowest green on the course.
Hole 16, 403 yards, par 4 Corhampton’s signature hole. A 403-yard par-4 dogleg, the second shot must carry a wide valley to reach the green. Threeputting on this steeply sloping and fast green is always likely.
Hole 18, 510 yards, par 5 Beware the fairway bunkers on this par-5 510-yard hole. A good second shot will set up a birdie chance, but be careful of the yew tree which guards the two-level green.

Practice Facilities Corhampton
has a vast practice area which is perfect for those dedicated players looking to lower
their handicap by working on their game.
There is a practice ground not far from the clubhouse which is around 350 yards long and therefore enables golfers to hit any club in their bag. The area is turfed, which is a lot less forgiving than artificial surfaces and gives more accurate feedback on how you are truly striking the ball. You and your teaching professional can also learn a great deal about your swing simply by surveying your divot pattern. Members practice with their own balls and also have the use of two driving bays which are perfect for inclement weather.
Not far away from this area can be found another popular spot for practising more delicate shots. There is a practice bunker and a variety of rough and fringe grass areas which are perfect for working on speciality shots like flop shots and chip shots and for getting a feel for how the ball will react off the clubface from various different types of rough. A practice putting green can be found right outside the clubhouse and there are two nets adjacent to the clubhouse which are perfect for loosening up and getting those rusty swings out of the system before moving on to the first tee.

Members’ Golf Corhampton
has a playing membership of around
600
male, female and junior members.
Each
section
maintains a year-round competition schedule aimed at encouraging players of all golfing standards.
Also
included are a number of friendly events alongside a lively and varied social calendar.
All
sections play regular matches with other clubs in the area, including mixed matches.
Men The men play in several local leagues and also enjoy a full programme of friendly fixtures throughout the year. Competition is keen, but friendship and maintaining the spirit of the game and honouring the three key words of honesty, integrity and courtesy are more important to us than winning. At least that’s what we tell ourselves when we come out second best! The men play competitive matches in the Gales Hockley League against a number of local clubs. They also contest the Gales HSB Summer League. This involves 18-hole matchplay contests and takes place late afternoons on Tuesdays during the warmer months.
We could fill this brochure simply with details of all the competitive golf played at Corhampton throughout the year, so numerous are the events. So suffice to say that the premier event that everyone wants to win is the Club Championship, which is usually played over 36 holes on a Saturday in mid June. Separate cups are also awarded on this day to the winners of the low, medium and high handicap brackets, the McDonald Cup (0-9 handicap), Goble Cup (10-16) and Haigh Cup (17-28).
29
Members’ Golf continued Because our course is in such fine shape all year round thanks to its excellent drainage, competition is keen whatever the time of year and a Winter League was inaugurated in 1979 to keep interest going through the winter months. Ladies The ladies are great supporters of the events run by the county and enter teams in the Stoneham Cup, which involves a league format with the group winners progressing to a knockout phase, the Hull Shield, a one-day aggregate medal event which is arguably the toughest county competition of all, and the North Hants Trophy, a singles knockout matchplay event played off scratch. Then there is also the popular foursomes knockout event, the Knight Cup, and the Centenary Foursomes, a competition won by Corhampton’s own Dale Hinton and Anna Jacobs in 2011.
30
Just like the men, the ladies have numerous honours board competitions throughout the year, with the Club Championship again being the most coveted. There are also monthly medals, while one of the most intriguing trophies is the Haigh Lady Masters Trophy, which was played for for the first time in our centenary year of 1991. All the winners of the major competitions throughout the year get together for a kind of champion of champions event with the winner on the day claiming this prestigious piece of silverware.
Seniors The Senior Men’s section was formed in 1966 and was originally called “The Veterans”. They play matches against local clubs home and away in the summer months and play in a winter league between November and February featuring matches home and away against South Winchester, Royal Winchester, Hockley and Alresford. The Senior Men’s Championship is played on the first Wednesday in June. It is a medal competition played from the white tees. The player with the best gross score wins the Prentice Salver and is declared “the senior section champion” and his name is inscribed on a club honours board. The player aged 75 and over with the best gross score wins the Jubilee Jug, while the Noel Highton Challenge Trophy goes to the player with the lowest net score.
The Senior Men’s Open is a major event in the seniors’ year. The Senior Men’s Secretary invites 60 visitors from clubs with whom the seniors enjoy matches, plus a few other local clubs. Thirty senior members play so that a home player hosts two visitors. Play is from the first and 10th tees. Yellow tees are used and scoring is by Stableford off full handicap. The best home player receives the Cy Thomas Cup, a trophy named after a popular member at Corhampton for many years. Mr Thomas died suddenly after playing in a Senior competition and his wife donated the trophy in his memory.

Members’ Golf continued Other events It should be noted we are an all-inclusive club which exists due to our love of the game, whatever form that may take, fun or serious, competitive or social. There are mixed competitions as well, the Bunce Trophy named after a former captain of the club was inaugurated in 1972 and is a mixed foursomes medal. The Linnell Cup, played on the first Sunday in July, is a foursomes Stableford competition contested by teams of married couples. The relationship having passed this toughest of examinations, the event is then followed by a convivial supper!
We even play a fun Christmas Shotgun event early on the morning of December 27 every year. Open to men, ladies and juniors, it is a drawn competition which comprises teams of three who play one ball in strict order.

Junior Golf We have an active junior section offering free coaching from our PGA Professionals, friendly matches against other local clubs and competitions during school holidays and at weekends. Juniors who join prior to their 18th birthday will pay a reduced annual fee whilst in full-time education up to age 23. The annual subscription for juniors works out at less than ÂŁ2 per week and offers outstanding value for money. Why play computer games when you can enjoy the real thing; join with your friends and you could form a golfing group that lasts a lifetime. Our junior organiser at Corhampton is Matthew Tryhorn, who has put together a structured programme aimed at teaching youngsters the golfing basics in terms of technique, rules and etiquette.
We are proud to have been awarded the prestigious GolfMark, which is a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities. It should enable us to secure further funding to help the progression of our younger golfers and we expect this section to continue to develop and go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

Open Competitions Corhampton is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1891. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. You will find details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place. Early May generally sees two events, a Ladies Open held during the week and a Mixed Open, held the following Sunday. Both competitions involve teams of four, with the ladies event employing a shotgun start and the fun and popular split six Stableford format and the mixed teams competing in a more traditional four-ball better-ball Stableford competition.
Split Sixes is also the format of choice for an open event we hold in July, which is also the month of our eagerly-anticipated Seniors Open, where 90 of the region’s best golfers over 60 look to land a notable piece of silverware. September sees a Texas Scramble in aid of the Captain’s charity and a Pro-Am event with four-man teams featuring one professional and three amateurs, while the youngsters get their chance in October in the Junior Open.

Clubhouse and Dining Corhampton’s 19th
is just as memorable as the
18
holes which precede it
–
we have a delightfully
light and spacious clubhouse where you can relax after your round.
There is a bar serving a selection of beers, wines and spirits as well as non-alcoholic cold drinks and we also serve tea and coffee throughout the day. Part of the bar area is reserved for those wishing to wear golf shoes, for instance perhaps those too busy to change because they are in a hurry to buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink to celebrate their hole in one! The clubhouse has some fine views over the course, none more so than from the balcony which overlooks the 18th green and where you can sit on a nice day to watch other golfers completing their rounds.
When it comes to eating at Corhampton, you are in expert hands thanks to our franchise caterer. A range of tasty bar snacks are available throughout the day and specials too. Our watchword is flexibility, so if you fancy something not on the menu the catering team can generally prepare it for you given a bit of notice, which also goes for golf societies and those with special dietary requirements.

Spooners Halfway Hut Even
if your outward nine is not shaping up in quite the manner you had hoped, there is always the
prospect of
Spooners Halfway Hut to raise your spirits.
Spooners offers a variety of refreshments to keep you going, from bacon rolls and pasties to beefburgers, sausage rolls and homemade soup. Hot pies and filled rolls are also available, as are hot or cold drinks, and for those with a sweet tooth there are cakes and chocolate bars. Place your order from the phone hotline on the 8th tee and your food should be ready for your arrival. The halfway hut was conceived by Harry Spooner as his contribution to the club during his year as Captain in 2002. Harry felt that he would like to do something for the members that would remain after his term in office. The club had a small halfway hut called Dacombes Den that had been converted from a shelter and made into a refreshment hut.
The facilities required refurbishment and Harry thought that a purpose-built halfway hut would be a great boon to the members. The Management Committee agreed to support the enterprise providing there was no cost to the club, with any money to come from fund-raising activities that the Captain might organise. A team was assembled by Harry of volunteers from the members and a set of plans was drawn up by Roger Wildig. To top off the hut the weathervane, in the form of a silhouette of HMS Vanguard, that had been on Dacombes Den, was overhauled and mounted on the roof of Spooners. Since its opening in September 2002 the hut has proved to be an important feature of the course, much appreciated by members and visitors alike.

Functions and Social Activities Corhampton has a friendly membership who enjoy each other’s company off the course as well as on it. We have a varied programme of social events throughout the year, ranging from sit-down dinners to parties and live bands. Among the many highlights in the social calendar are Captain’s Day and our annual summer ball. Our facilities are excellent: we have a spacious, light and wellappointed clubhouse in which to relax and it is particularly pleasant to sit out on the terrace overlooking the 18th green on balmy summer evenings.
We are able to hire out our premises for special occasions such as birthday parties, wedding anniversary celebrations, or even business seminars or small conferences (a screen and projector can be supplied). The Hartwell Room, our main dining area, can accommodate up to 44 people for a sit-down meal, while – subject to golfing commitments – the main clubroom can seat around 72.
