Preface How well I remember playing up the Downs with the wind blowing and an enthusiastic crowd urging us on.

My relationship with Dunstable Downs Golf Club goes back more than 50 years. The reason? It was my friendship with Bob and Doreen Durrant. Bob and his brother Sonny were master butchers who plied their trade in Luton. Both their wives and Doreen in particular, were very keen golfers and reached a very good standard. Bob became Captain of the Club and the idea of an exhibition match was mooted. I’m not sure how many times we played these matches but they were always full of fun and, although there were changes over the years, the contestants were normally Stewart Field, the longstanding golf professional, Dai Rees, Bernard Hunt, David Thomas and myself, (although I’m not sure how many www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

times David played). How well I remember playing up the Downs with the wind blowing and an enthusiastic crowd urging us on. We, in turn, trying to provide exciting golf and secure birdies which always resulted in a silver collection on the green!

Sheila Kempster, who won the Bedfordshire Ladies’ Championship on at least five occasions. Sadly, Pro-Ams took over from exhibition matches, the game of golf was growing at an alarming rate but I still remember those far off days with great affection.

They were happy, innocent days, and if the golf was a bit shaky you could always admire the gliders which flew silently and effortlessly above the course.

I send you my congratulations and best wishes for the future and thanks for being very much a part of my early days in professional golf. Moments spent in such company helped to mould my thinking towards not only the game of golf but being associated with a club and, indeed club life, for which Dunstable Downs has always been renowned.

The Club became bigger, membership grew and it began to produce some very good golfers. Bob Durrant became a very substantial player and what great deeds were performed by

Introduction To Dunstable Downs Golf Club The course is a first class test of golf over its 6,322 yards and provides an interesting challenge for players of all abilities.

It was in the Council Chamber of Dunstable Town Hall on the evening of Friday November 2, 1906 that the idea of forming a local golf links was hatched. It was as much down to the driving support of 20 ‘gentlemen of the town and district’ as to the leadership of a Mr J. Healing who was appointed Honorary Secretary of the project, that the proposal was approved to great applause. And so golf in Dunstable was started.” High on the crest of the Chiltern Hills, nearly 800 feet above sea level, Dunstable Downs golf course is laid out on a rolling plateau with views over seven counties, from Surrey in the south to Northamptonshire in the north. The Downs is a famous beauty spot and viewpoint. The bracing air, the glorious downland turf and the richly 06

varied character of the terrain make it an ideal place for a golf course. The course is a first class test of golf over its 6,322 yards and provides an interesting challenge for players of all abilities. The chalky sub-soil makes for dry conditions all year round and the quality of the greens is a renowned feature. Dunstable Downs Golf Club dates officially from November 1906, but for eight years before that a few enthusiasts, most of whom were connected with Dunstable School, had played over a little nine-hole course in the park. The Club was originally nine holes

laid out on the Downs and soon afterwards expanded to 18 holes. Part of this course, however, was on the Common and one or two holes actually crossed the road. The growing popularity of the Downs as a leisure resort, the increased traffic due to the establishment of Whipsnade Zoo and the activities of the London Gliding Club made some revisions to the layout inevitable. In 1930 the Club seized the opportunity to purchase Downs Farm, give up part of the original course and create 10 new holes (today’s layout). This course layout was designed by a member of the www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

The original clubhouse was called The Bella Vue then the California Inn, prior to being the clubhouse. The building was occupied as the clubhouse in 1906-1935, picture taken 1912

‘Great Triumvirate’ and legendary golf course architect, James Braid, whose layout exhibits all the traditional trademarks of a Braid design. A new Clubhouse was built in 1936 and at this time was a delightful example of modern architecture. The subsequent success of the Clubhouse as a social centre has created a notable atmosphere within the Club that exists to this day. The Clubhouse stands on the very summit of the Downs, a couple of hundred yards from the entrance on the Whipsnade Road.

Course Guide For most golfers a second shot over the cross bunker into the middle of the valley will leave a pitch on.

If you have never played at Dunstable Downs Golf Club before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our hole-by-hole tour. Fossey’s Farm Hole 1, 506 yards, par 5

Relatively short downhill par 5 to open your round. A drive down the left-hand side of the fairway gives you a chance to go for the green in two or position yourself up the righthand side of the green for an easy chip on. Beware of going through the green.

Tom Moore Hole 2, 167 yards, par 3 Tight entrance in to one of the trickiest greens on the course. Leaving yourself an uphill putt is advisable. 08

Healing’s Drive Hole 3, 593 yards, par 5

Longest hole on the course. Two long accurate shots are required to give you a good view of the flag for your approach shot in. The ball will work its way from the left to right once it lands on the green.

Poplar Lane Hole 4, 343 yards, par 4

The longest of hitters will take on this short par 4 but great accuracy is demanded to reap the rewards of such bravery. The percentage play is a fairway wood/long iron off the tee up the right side of the fairway

giving you a good view of the green. This is a sloping green so again a putt uphill is essential.

Far Corner Hole 5, 157 yards, par 3

A wide but narrow-depth green guarded by bunkers requires perfect club selection. A difficult hole to judge the swirling wind in the far corner of the course, so beware – take your 3 and run!

British Road Hole 6, 374 yards, par 4

Dead straight par 4 hole requires a good tee shot through the avenue www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

of trees to a fairly generous fairway. Club selection is again vital to a small two-tiered green.

Herbie’s Home Hole 7, 376 yards, par 4

Elevated tee shot to a generous fairway. Avoid the bunkers with the tee shot to set yourself up for a good birdie chance.

Braid’s Best Hole 8, 448 yards, par 4

One of the toughest par 4s in the county if not the toughest, this is a long uphill hole to a small green in the valley. A drive down the left makes its way to the right due to the slope of the fairway. For most golfers a second shot over the cross bunker into the middle of the valley will leave a pitch on – a bogey 5 is not a bad score. www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

Ravine Hole 9, 123 yards, par 3

Five Counties Hole 12, 458 yards, par 4

Three Brothers Hole 10, 411 yards, par 4

Bennett’s Drive Hole 13, 328 yards, par 4

Our signature hole. Just 123 yards but miss the green at your peril. Small target, heavily bunkered. Don’t come up short!

The first of a tough stretch of three long par 4s. Slight dog leg right requiring a tee shot into the left half of the fairway to open up the best angle into a sloping green.

The Long Hole 11, 454 yards, par 4

Long straight uphill par 4 usually into the prevailing wind. The average hitter needs to avoid the cluster of cross bunkers on the second shot.

Avoid the cross bunkers off the tee and a 4 on your card is possible. Well protected green. Just a fantastic long par 4 challenge.

After three tough holes, a chance to catch your breath with a run of three short par 4 holes. The 13th is a relatively short hole with out of bounds all the way up the left side. Keep the tee shot slightly right off the tee to open up the second shot to the green.

09

California Hole 14, 308 yards, par 4

A short ‘risk and reward’ hole. Slight dog leg to the right where the longest hitters can be tempted to go for the green. The safer option from the tee is a long iron/fairway wood left of the fairway bunker. This will leave a short pitch to the green. Keep the approach shot well up to the right-hand side to use the contours.

Plateau Hole 15, 350 yards, par 4

A short ‘down and up’ par 4. Keep the tee shot up the right-hand side as the ground slopes all to the left. Also there is plenty of trouble all the way up the left. A blind approach www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

shot makes it tough to judge, so it is always worth bearing in mind the pin position. Avoid missing the green to the left.

Stewart’s View Hole 16, 440 yards, par 4

Long par 4. The key to this hole is to avoid the penal fairway bunkers. Favour the left side with the tee shot. When approaching the green remember to take plenty of club as there are many more bunkers awaiting just short of the green.

Tumulus Hole 17, 335 yards, par 4

A short par 4 that can be played in two ways. The longer hitters can be tempted to go for the green from the tee and therefore risk carrying

the two bunkers placed in the fairway. The safer option is to play a fairway wood/long iron from the tee and have a short pitch to the green. An accurate approach shot is required as this undulating green has plenty of surrounding bunkers to all sides.

Death or Glory Hole 18, 170 yards, par 3

A demanding par 3 to finish. This short heavily bunkered hole requires an accurate tee shot in order to find this very small green. It is important not to short-side yourself with the tee shot. The wind always swirls around this hole, check the flag on the nearby 12th hole to be sure of the wind direction. 11

The Club Professional If you are serious about improving your game, custom fitting your equipment is the best decision you can make.

We are proud to have Darren Charlton as our resident PGA Professional at Dunstable Downs Golf Club. Darren has been with us a number of years having been a member at DDGC before he turned professional in 1991. Darren has achieved a number of successes during his career as a professional, including the East Anglian Open Champion in 2006 and 2008, European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 winner in 2003, East Region Order of Merit winner in 2005 and five time DDGC Club Champion from 1986-90. Whether it’s the golf basics, tweaking a swing, advice on equipment, custom-fitting a new driver, coaching juniors, beginners, improvers or professionals, helping with a ruling, or simply taking a green fee, PGA pros do pretty much anything and everything in golf. www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk

Perhaps best of all they’re there to help you, the amateur golfer, squeeze the most out of this wonderful game that both tantalises and frustrates in equal measure. Darren is a focal point of the Club, a friendly face to visitors and source of advice and help to members. He maintains a well-stocked Pro Shop that features clubs from leading manufacturers such as Titleist, TaylorMade, Footjoy, Ping and many more. sets your local Professionals apart from the Internet. If you are serious about improving your game, custom fitting your equipment is the best decision you can make. Darren has been through a comprehensive, PGAcertified training program designed to instruct him to properly fit equipment to every golfer’s swing. all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores. For those not yet ready to part company with their current equipment, repairs such as regripping and re-shafting can be undertaken at reasonable prices to prolong the life of favourite clubs. With over 20 years’ experience teaching players of all levels from www.dunstabledownsgolf.co.uk
