Welcome With spectacular views that stretch across the coastline, a clubhouse which is but a stone’s throw away from the city centre and a links-style course set into the remarkably beautiful down land area along the south coast, if you are still looking for a reason to play your golf at East Brighton Golf Club the answer is simple. Why not?

Being built on chalk, with incredible views of the English Channel, our course drains rain away faster than most courses, meaning that even during the wet parts of the year our course is still very much playable. For your more experienced golfers why not come for a round when the wild wind blows, this will test your golfing ability to its limits and provide an entertaining 18 holes in the process.

Our course, which – being formed in 1893 – is over 120 years old, provides a testing yet enjoyable experience for any golfer. Our aim is to ensure that golfers of all levels are able to make their way round the 6,426 yards that comprise our 18 hole, par 72, course and will be tested but not put in a position where our scenic course ceases to be enjoyable.

Whether you are looking to become a full time member or just fancy a round of golf, there is no better club in Brighton to visit than East Brighton Golf Club. We extend the warmest of welcomes to members, societies and visitors alike and do our very best to ensure that you have the most enjoyable 18 holes possible, on our scenic seaside course.

Found in the heart of the Brighton Lanes and run by the charismatic Brighton restaurateur, Coco Cowan, Darcy’s is one of Brighton’s premiere seafood restaurants – Originally a fisherman’s cottage, Darcy’s has been a specialist seafood restaurant for more than 50 years. We’ve retained a traditional decorative style which helps create an intimate and comfortable atmosphere whether you’re having a simple one-course lunch or a three-course dinner. When the weather is good we also have tables outside for eating alfresco. Our starters, main courses and dessert menu ranges from the deliciously light and simple to rich flavours, such as thermidor sauce, and selection of our puddings made daily by our chef. Starters include our much loved homemade crab chowder, fish soup, lentil soup and lobster linguine pasta, locally smoked baby trout plus a selection of favourite dishes that customers always like such as whitebait, deep fried squid, prawn cocktail, scotch smoked salmon and king prawns in hot garlic butter. Main courses vary depending on the best of the catch from our suppliers such: as dover sole, lemon sole, place on the bone, sea bass, turbot, bream, salmon, rainbow trout, scallops, mussels, lobster…; we also serve various seafood salads, fish pie, seafood risotto, seafood casserole, seafood pasta and a steak, rump or sirloin, for customers where fish is not to their liking; and would happily create something vegetarian ‘off-menu’ on request, if our vegetarian pasta is not to their liking.

We also have two function rooms available, please call for more information. Always keep an eye out for our daily menu. Tel:

Our clubhouse was officially opened in November 1905 around the time that Beard had obtained extra land to improve the course across 130 acres. These improvements were completed and the 18-hole course that stands on our grounds today was designed in 1908 and remains virtually unchanged from the original design by renowned golf architect James Braid. When Beard died in 1912 the club were offered the opportunity to buy the land permanently, a deal could not be reached and instead the land was sold to Brighton Council for £30,000. The club then went about renting the land back from the council. This started at a rate of £200 per annum, which rose to £4,000 by 1992. The land was eventually bought by the club in December 1996 for £600,000.

Club History Behind all the modernisations we have made over the years we are still a club that are extremely proud of our history; a history which can be seen scattered across the walls of our clubhouse for all to see. It is one of the things that makes East Brighton Golf Club such an exciting place. The club was first formed in 1893 as Ovingdean Golf Club by Mr Steyning Beard. This was changed to East Brighton Golf Club in 1901, a name that remains in place to this day.

East Brighton Golf Club | 11

Club History (continued) It is unsurprising that in well over a hundred years of its history the club has seen many changes. The clubhouse has undergone small changes and then a major refurbishment in 1990 but has managed to retain its past character. In 2007 we achieved ‘Community Amateur Sports Club’ status. This means that we adhere to and promote the virtues of equality amongst our membership and promote our sport within

the community. We are proud of our 120 year history and want our members to feel part of it. Many major events and memorable moments are recorded on the clubhouse walls where they are remembered as part of what makes East Brighton Golf Club so special.

Our course is continuously improving and it is our dedication to making it the best it can be that keeps it as one of the best courses in both East and West Sussex. On the course we have a dress code that must be adhered to; smart shirts and trousers or smart shorts must be worn at all times, as must proper golf shoes and socks.

The Course With a par of 72 and stretching out at 6,426 yards, our spectacular East Brighton course provides a challenging round for golfers of all abilities. The reward that comes with it is that you can feel confident in your ability once you’ve completed your round. Despite its challenges our course is one of the most enjoyable in the south so why not give it a go? Our Halfway House, located just behind the ninth green, gives players a chance to take a break and enjoy a relaxing drink and snack, or just take a loo break. From the 12th tee, the highest point on the course, you can enjoy spectacular views of the English Channel and the beautiful Sussex coastline; from Beachy Head to Selsey Bill. You can even see the silhouette of the Isle of Wight on a clear summer day.

East Brighton Golf Club | 15

Hole 2 (Roedean Towers) 211 Yards, Par 3 Named after the towers of the famous Roedean School that lies in the background, behind the green, this hole requires a simple tee shot but, dependent on pin position, can leave a tough putt. Be wary of the bunkers that lie in front of the green as leaving your ball short could see you getting your sand wedge out early. Hole 3 (Red Hill Crest) 348 Yards, Par 4 The sensible golfer will keep left on the tee shot as there is a large out of bounds area to the right, however if you feel like risking hitting the ball out you leave yourself less chance of hitting the bunkers, if you can find the fairway. Assuming the green is reached in two a simple birdie putt is left for those willing to take it on.

Take the Course Tour Prepare for your visit to East Brighton by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our hole-by-hole guide. You can prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our professional, Adrian Milligan. Hole 1 (Away We Go) 365 Yards, Par 4 We like to ease you into our course and as such this routine Par 4 will settle you into a comfortable stride. A tee shot down the left side of the fairway sets up a good second to reach the elevated green. A good birdie opportunity to kick off your round.

16 | East Brighton Golf Club

Hole 4 (Pit Stop) 161 Yards, Par 3 Two par 3’s in the opening four holes? We do spoil you for birdie opportunities here don’t we. On a windy day this short hole can be extremely tricky, with bunkers on either side of the green, and so only a straight tee shot will see you find the target. We offer you the birdie chances, we never said we’d make them easy. Hole 5 (Ovingdean Hollow) 563 Yards, Par 5 The first Par 5 of the course is a slight dogleg right. A decent tee shot, finishing on the fairway or semi-rough, leaves you the choice of whether to play safe and avoid the fairway bunker on your second or use it to try and reach the green in two setting up a possible eagle opportunity.

Hole 6 (Tranquillity) 515 Yards, Par 5 This hole can set up as a Par 4 dependent on which tee you play off. It takes a mammoth drive off the tee to be able to even consider reaching the green in two. The advantage is that this long hole is dead straight and if you can avoid the fairway and greenside bunkers then a birdie could be on the cards. Hole 7 (Dunstan’s View) 171 Yards, Par 3 Don’t worry we don’t keep things difficult for long. After two monster holes we’re back to another Par 3. Aside from two small bunkers on the approach to the green this hole lays up as a good birdie opportunity if you can get your positioning right. Hole 8 (Round the Bend) 380 Yards, Par 4 A straight drive into the dog leg should give you a simple second towards the green but be careful, too far off the tee and you could easily find yourself in the fairway bunker and from there even making par is difficult.

Hole 9 (Kestrel’s Haunt) 429 Yards, Par 4 Slicing the ball right from off the tee will see your ball fly into the out of bounds area. A straight drive down the centre of the fairway is essential if you want to conquer this tricky Par 4. The elevated green takes a little bit extra if you want to reach it in regulation.

If you would like a hot snack it is recommended, but not required, that you call the halfway house from the ninth tee. But please remember to turn your phone off again afterwards. After your break it’s back out on to the course for the back nine….

Halfway House Congratulations! You’ve reached the halfway point of our fine course now sit back, take a load off and refuel before braving the back nine. Our Halfway House is located right behind the ninth green and boasts a brilliant view of the course back down the valley and to the sea. Golfers can take advantage of the hot and cold drinks and snacks that are on offer; from an assortment of sandwiches and baguettes to a wide selection of cakes. You are also free to use our toilet facilities.

East Brighton Golf Club | 19

Take the Course Tour (continued) Hole 10 (Carry the Valley) 211 yards, Par 3 As the name suggests this hole requires you to carry some 150 or so yards of valley to reach the small patch of fairway that proceeds the green. This hole can be tricky to judge, especially if the wind is blowing. Our tip is to land the ball just short and let it run on. Hole 11 (The Grinder) 488 Yards, Par 5 Playing your tee shot down the left, is the safe bet to avoid the sloping fairway and the out of bounds area which stretches down the entire right hand side of the hole. The fairway narrows as you approach the green.

20 | East Brighton Golf Club

Hole 12 (Bowden’s Ace) 404 Yards, Par 4 This downhill dog-leg running adjacent to Brighton racecourse provides incredible views of the hills and the Channel. There are a couple of fairway bunkers hidden from view which need to be avoided if reaching the green in two is your aim. Hole 13 (Up and Over) 306 Yards, Par 4 There are two different tee-off positions to this hole: The tournament position (white tee) is adjacent to the racecourse, whilst the red and yellow tees are near the 12th green, but do not get complacent, each tee is as difficult as the last and all three require a carry, over trees, to find the fairway. The slope gives your ball extra run but does slope to the left so it is always best to aim a little right.

Hole 14 (Red Hill Down) 378 Yards, Par 4 This Par 4 is dead straight so don’t over-do your shot because slicing the ball right will see you go out of bounds almost immediately, whilst on the left a downhill slope off the fairway will also see your ball in a tough position. A straight drive will leave you a medium shot to reach the green. Hole 15 (Channel View ) 492 Yards, Par 5 A spectacular view of the English Channel gives this hole its name and is the perfect backdrop for a truly spectacular hole. From the tee, if you can manage to avoid the trees on the left it will allow you to test yourself and try to reach the green on your second shot. Not an easy shot, but if pulled off it is wonderful. Hole 16 (Carrera’s Carry) 156 Yards, Par 3 The green itself is relatively easy to reach if you give the ball enough club, however leaving it short could see you find the

large pit bunker in front of the green or any of the three smaller bunkers which surround it. Hole 17 (Bridle Crossing) 374 Yards, Par 4 There is a large out of bounds area to the right of the fairway and a small carry needed to find the fairway so make sure you hit the ball cleanly. A shot left could see your ball land on the green of the fourth hole so keep it straight if you can. A good fairway shot should only leave you a mid-iron to the green. Hole 18 (Marina View ) 474 Yards, Par 5 This is by no means an easy end to the course but it is most definitely an end with a spectacular view. A shot to the left of the fairway will leave you with two easy downhill shots with a stunning view of the marina as you make your way to the green.

We also offer a range of other rates for all age groups so you can get the whole family golfing with us. Junior membership for 12 months is a very reasonable rate of ÂŁ125. Students can also get a discounted price if they bring along proof that they are in full-time education. We have also introduced an intermediate

We look forward to welcoming you to East Brighton Golf Club and can guarantee that if you decide to join our fine club it will benefit both your golfing ability and certainly broaden your circle of friends.

golfer rate valid for ages from 18 to 32 years. We all know how difficult the current economic climate is for many people and especially our younger members, and at East Brighton Golf Club we have introduced this new membership to alleviate the transition to full 7 or 5 day. Our intermediate golfer rates range from £320 for 18-22 year olds up to £630 for 28-32 year olds. Our seven-day membership is extremely competitive when compared to other local clubs and especially when included in the cost is the opportunity to play our spectacular course and enjoy our amazing sea views. A seven day membership is £964. We make all our members feel at home at our club and the benefits we offer are worth the price of membership. Our members receive excellent benefits and often rave about the atmosphere of the club in general.

Junior Golf Lots of competitions and fun events, and other members to play with – these are just some of the reasons why East Brighton is a great club for Junior members. It’s great for juniors’ parents, too. You can easily find your way to the club – two miles from the pier or the station, close to Brighton Marina, Brighton racecourse, and with ample free car parking on site. If you have just started playing and don’t have a handicap, or if you’re already a capable player thinking about switching clubs, you’ll find East Brighton ideal. Some of last year’s new members formed a little group and played amongst themselves through the summer holidays.

It was a great year for the top Juniors at the club. Oli Graves, the 2013 Junior Captain, won the Club Championship and his twin brother Toby was a star of the Scratch Team. Another member of the Scratch Team, Mark Buss, proudly saw his daughter Fenella win the East Brighton Junior Open in August. Dale Sutton, the Junior Organiser, is very pleased with progress by all the junior players – among them his son, Jack, who is one of the county’s top prospects. Some of the newcomers enjoyed their golf just as much as the single-figure handicap players. With expert tuition available from the pro shop’s Adrian Milligan and Dan Croucher – who runs group sessions for all levels of ability – all players can improve quickly. Dan coaches groups from local schools, too.

Our packages have received rave reviews from many companies across Sussex and societies continuously come back to us for their days out. We are very happy to host charity days with reasonable green fees to ensure a large proportion of monies is received by the charity involved. In addition we can organise a Corporate Day for your company to ensure a fantastic day for your clients and employees which will engender excellent networking possibilities and goodwill to all! We have the experience to organise a ‘seam free’ day, one in which the participants will be talking about for months to come.

Golf Societies & Corporate Golf Fancy impressing clients or just taking the company staff out for a day, we have a variety of packages available for parties of 12 and over, who can take full advantage of our course and clubhouse for the day. Our cheapest package is from £25.00 per person which is for 18 holes of golf and then you can embellish the day with such additions as coffee and bacon rolls beforehand and a quality one, two, or three course meal in our beautiful Oak room afterwards.

Visitors Info Preferred Tee Times You want to play when you want to right? Saturday and Sunday mornings are peak playing times and are quite rightly, reserved for members. Joining East Brighton Golf Club allows you access to the prime pick of tee times. Signing in Guests Whether it’s a colleague, a client or just a friend, there’s a certain pleasure to be had in extending an invitation to come and play at “my club”. Nothing is quite the same as welcoming a guest to your club.

Extra Rounds One of the luxuries of being a golf club member is that you can squeeze a few holes in after work and not worry about the cost of it. Evening rounds in the summer are some of the most enjoyable times to be on the course and often some of the quietest. Competition The goal of any golfer is to get your handicap down, and the reality is that the only way to do that is in club competitions. Knocking it around a foreign course with a few mates has its merits, but playing in club competitions whether they are the Club Championship, Weekly Medal, or Christmas Greensomes, provides the opportunity for golfers to enjoy the competitive nature of the game, meet new golfers, win prizes and ultimately improve as a golfer.

Of course our city centre is always a vibrant and bustling hive of excitement and aside from our beach it is one of the main reasons tourists flock here in their numbers. The Churchill Square shopping centre is jam-packed with shops and restaurants to satisfy every need. The Laines are a historic shopping experience, with all the modern stores set in amongst the traditional 19th century streets. The North Lanes feature the Komedia comedy club and cinema as well as a number of high street and independent brand names. A minute down the road from East Brighton Golf Club is the Brighton Marina. With a wide range of shopping and eating choices it is up to you how to spend your time in this brilliant seaside entertainment facility. From bowling to the cinema and shopping and dining to suit all tastes the marina is a brilliant place to spend an afternoon off from golfing.

What to do in Brighton With its fantastic beaches, excellent night life and brilliant tourist attractions Brighton is a wonderful place to go and explore in between rounds of golf. Whilst you’re with us, whether you are a member or just a visitor, why not take the time to explore what makes Brighton such a popular tourist destination.

For you music lovers you will not find a night when there is not some form of live music playing in the city. Whether you are a fan of pop or rock, RnB or Hip Hop there is something for everyone. From the pubs to the Brighton Centre there will always be a band out performing in the city that will satisfy your music cravings.

For all you sports fans there are a range of clubs you can go and watch. For football fans there is Brighton & Hove Albion FC whose fantastic Amex Stadium is just a five minute train ride to Falmer. Meanwhile Sussex County Cricket Club are based in Hove, which is also just a short train ride from the centre of Brighton. Both of these activities would fit ideally around a round of golf, besides we wouldn’t mind if you wanted to take a break and explore before returning.
