Welcome to Hove By Zac Toumazi, Chief Executive
A
warm welcome to The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground this afternoon for our penultimate home South Group game in the Friends Life t20 against Essex Eagles. As always we extend a warm welcome to our visitors although we hope that we can reverse the result from last Sunday when our opponents got the better of us in another thrilling affair! In fact, none of our matches this season have failed to excite with thrills and spills right until the last few balls of the game and that’s what really entertains the crowds in the 20 over format. Unfortunately very few of them have gone our way but that’s the nature of the shorter game and we’ll be doing our very best to put that right in the remaining matches. This is our only home Sunday afternoon match of the T20 campaign and it’ll be great to see a real family-orientated crowd today at Hove. Friday night home games are regarded as a ‘great night out’ but our attendances on Sunday afternoon matches over the past few seasons have been just as impressive and I’m sure that if the heatwave we’ve been enjoying over the past couple of weeks continues today then we’ll be in for another near full house. It’ll also be nice to see a lot of younger faces in the crowd who can enjoy the action at an earlier time than normal. Away from the shorter format of the game, we’re really looking forward to what surely will be one of the highlights of the season when we host Australia here on Friday for a three-day tour match. The Ashes really started with a bang at Trent Bridge and if we
experience a match half as exciting as that First Test then we’re in for a real treat. The atmosphere should be electric too with most tickets already sold for the first two days so if you’re looking to come back down to Hove next weekend then make sure you get in quick. We also have our final group T20 match here on Wednesday week against the Kent Spitfires before we continue in the LV=County Championship by entertaining Derbyshire so I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible over the next couple of weeks. Good Old Sussex By The Sea!

SO MUCH EFFORT, SO LITTLE REWARD
With three games to go, the Sharks might find the quarter-finals beyond them this season By Bruce Talbot
M
omentum. It’s one of the coach’s favourite buzzwords and, in the case of the Sharks’ T20 campaign for this season, there is still enough time to find some. Mark Robinson must have felt like a football manager whose team who were 1-0 up going into the last five minutes only to lose 2-1 during the first half of the T20 campaign. The trouble is, the same scenario has unfolded five times in the six games before Tuesday’s home tie against Middlesex Panthers. Last-over defeats are hard to take, but when it keeps happening as it did to Sussex twice against Surrey and Hampshire and then at Chelmsford a week ago it can be hard to take.
Once again it looks likely that the ultra competitive South Group will provide three of the teams in the knockout stages and with winless Kent probably out of the equation already that leaves three teams out of five to battle it out for a place in the last eight, all of whom are capable of beating each other. It could take wins in our last four games to make it, but you never know and there is no chance that the Sharks are going to throw in the towel. “It is heart-breaking for everyone concerned, particularly the players who have put so much commitment in for little reward,” said coach Mark Robinson after the defeat to Essex. “We are not getting hammered and you have to feel for the
7 players to keep losing to such small margins. In most of the games so far we have created a situation where we should have closed the game out but haven’t got over the line.” “We have fought really hard in every single game and taken virtually them all down to the wire so to not come out on the right side has been unbelievably frustrating.” Team changes have been kept to a minimum so far in an effort to find the winning blend and in our last home game it was encouraging for Sharks’ fans to see leg spinner Will Beer continue his impressive form with the ball. Admittedly, a dry, slow pitch suited the spinners but you still have to keep your cool and maintain your concentration so for Beer to finish with figures of 1 for 15 from his four overs was mightily impressive and cemented the impression that he is a much improved cricketer across all formats this season, having signed a new two-year contract last October.
Sunday he made another career-best, this time in the T20, with 57 from 30 balls against the Eagles. Just to get a regular slot in the T20 side is an achievement for Machan given the competition for places from the likes of Luke Wells and Joe Gatting, who could both make an argument for inclusion in a strong Sharks’ top order. But his performances down the order and in particular his ability to adapt and keep cool under pressure have, like Beer, been very impressive. He said: “I feel I have progressed more than I hoped for this season and a lot of that is down to playing for Scotland (he qualifies because his Mum is Scottish). It has given me a lot more confidence and self-belief. I’ve had to miss a few Sussex games because of it but it has been of massive benefit. Getting my first (Championship) hundred is something I have wanted more than anything else and I’m really happy it is out of the way now.”
“We lost five games by the smallest of margins so it wouldn’t take much for us to turn it around.” – Mark Robinson. He said: “I feel like I have bowled well in each of the first four T20 games so far. I went for 35 runs at Lord’s, which was a bit expensive, but to go for under a run a ball like I did against Hampshire was very pleasing. It was a good day for me. I felt as a unit we bowled well between overs 10-18 in that game but we just couldn’t get over the line. You have to give credit to Hampshire, especially McKenzie. He is a fantastic player who has done it time and time again.” Another younger member of the Sharks’ squad heading into tonight’s game in prime form is Matt Machan. The 22-year-old has arguably pushed his game on more than any member of the squad and last week he followed up his maiden List A hundred – 114 for Scotland against Kenya in the World Cricket League in Aberdeen – with his first Championship hundred. Substituting for Ed Joyce, who was on Ireland duty, Machan made 103 as Sussex beat Somerset by nine wickets at Taunton to go back to the top of the Championship and last

Essex Report
Rory Hamilton-Brown’s 43 kept Sussex ticking along
SHARKS FALL SHORT AGAIN Matt Machan’s 57 in vain as Eagles soar
11
S
ussex suffered more frustration against today’s opponents at Chelmsford a week ago as they lost for the fifth time in the last over in this summer’s Friends Life t20 campaign. The home side chased down a target of 172 with four balls to spare after Sussex’s total of 171 for 9 had been inflated by 12 runs because Essex did not bowl their overs in time. With Luke Wright injured, Matt Machan moved up to open and Machan continued his excellent recent form with 57 off 30 balls, which included eight fours and a six. The Sharks reached 95 for 1 at halfway but lost momentum when Machan departed for the addition of six runs. Australian pace bowler Shaun Tait, getting the ball to reverse swing, took 4 for 26 to run through the middle order, although Rory Hamilton-Brown kept the scoreboard ticking over with 43. However, Sussex could only manage 53 from the last five overs. Eagles’ openers Hamish Rutherford and Greg Smith went cheaply but Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah seized the initiative for Essex with a partnership of 56 in six overs before the former was caught in the deep off Dwayne Smith. Bopara’s 35 came off 21 balls and contained three fours and two sixes, while Shah made 40 from 36 balls with four fours and two sixes before he holed out against the nagging left-arm spin of Mike Yardy. A target of 51 from the last five overs did not trouble Ryan ten Doeschate and James Foster, whose unbroken stand of 57 saw Essex home. ROBBO’S VERDICT: “It’s yet another game where we just haven’t got over the line and I feel for the players who once again put a lot into the game and didn’t do a lot wrong but the result went against them.”

Aussies are coming
25
The Aussies are coming: But will they be celebrating against Sussex?
HERE COME THE AUSSIES Don’t miss out on a BIG three days!
I
t’s the most keenly anticipated fixture of the season and if you want to watch Sussex take on Australia later this week you’d better act now! Members’ area tickets for the first two days of the three-day tour fixture, which starts on Friday July 26, are already sold out. There are some general admission tickets available for the first two days and there are general admission and South West Stand tickets on sale for the third day on Sunday, July 28. Play starts on each day at 11am. The Australians love coming to Hove and Sussex audiences love watching them. On their last tour in 2009 the four-day game attracted an aggregate attendance of more than 25,000 with the ground full to capacity on the first three days. It was a 12-a-side game and therefore not first-class but that didn’t take away the pleasure Carl Hopkinson felt after scoring a century against the Aussies on the last day of the match. Australia have visited Hove on three of their last four Ashes visits and specifically requested a fixture this year so that the families can join the players beside the seaside between the second and third
Tests. Four years on and it will be a much-changed team that visits Sussex. Of the side that played in the last match, which ended in a high-scoring draw, there are only four survivors: skipper Michael Clarke and his vice-captain Brad Haddin, opener Philip Hughes and fast bowler Peter Siddle. Sussex supporters will finally get the chance to see Ryan Harris, who joined the county in 2008 but only played one first-class game against MCC at Lord’s. Mind you, the Sussex side has changed a fair bit too. Hopkinson, who made a superb 115 in the second innings, is now on the coaching staff while South African Pepler Sandri made his only appearance for the county in that game and took the wickets of both Hughes and Simon Katich. With the Investec Ashes Series in full swing and already producing some absorbing cricket and even the weather behaving itself this game, which is sponsored by OCS, promises to be one of the highlights of the season – make sure you are there! MAC THE KNIFE
Last-ball four ends Sharks’ hopes
F
or the second time in a week, Sussex were thwarted by Hampshire’s Neil McKenzie after a brilliant fightback at the Ageas Bowl took the Sharks to the brink of victory. The South African hit the last ball, bowled by Scott Styris, for four to secure a four-wicket win and condemn Sussex to their fourth last-over defeat in this season’s Friends Life T20. Chasing a modest Sussex total of 118 for 7, Hampshire reached 73 at halfway needing a further 46, but then Chris Nash and Chris Liddle, who took four wickets between them, imposed a stranglehold and Hampshire could only manage two more
boundaries, including the match-winning one. Skipper Nash, who had earlier top scored with a run-a-ball 40, had Jimmy Adams stumped in the 12th over and top scorer Michael Carberry (41) was caught on the cover boundary before the majority of a crowd of around 8,000 were stunned into silence as Liddle got rid of Sean Ervine at 101, Liam Dawson hit his own wicket at 111 and in the same over from Michael Yardy, Adam Wheater was caught and bowled without scoring. Six were needed off the last over but McKenzie kept his cool to maintain the Royals’ unbeaten record.

TAIT’S T20 ALL-STARS
SHAUN TAIT, the Essex and Australia fast bowler, tells PAUL HISCOCK who he would pick in his all-star T20 XI… ‘‘To open the batting I’d have Shane Watson and Chris Gayle, who sends every second ball out of the park. Watson is a very versatile player and can also come on and bowl. I’ve played a lot of cricket with Watson and, when he’s in form, he’s probably as good a T20 player as you’ll get – perhaps even the best I’ve played with and against. I’ve played against Gayle quite a bit and he’d be my choice as the most destructive batsman in the format. If he gets going the game is almost over. At No3, I’d have Brendon McCullum (pictured above). He’s more of an opener and a really powerful hitter but you could put him at three and he can also keep wicket. At four I’d choose Virat Kohli. He’s a superb player, plays all the shots, dominates the IPL and plays well internationally too. He’s fit and smart and could play at this level for a long time. Next in the order I’d have AB de Villiers. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, is a class player and plays all the angle shots and sweep shots. He also plays the quicks and spinners well. At No6, I’ll have Kieron Pollard, the big West Indian hitter who could also bowl a few overs. He goes in and smacks them all over the park. I’ve gone for Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan leg spin
bowler at number seven in my side. He can whack it out of the ground as well, so there are a lot of bighitters in my top seven. I’d have James Faulkner as my all-rounder. He’d be at No8 and I think he was the best fast-medium bowler in the IPL. So now we come to my selection of frontline bowlers. Lasith Malinga, for me, is the number one bowler in world T20. He’s a class act and second to him is probably Dale Steyn. As my number one spinner, I’ve selected Sunil Narine, as he’s a very clever bowler. Owais Shah is my twelfth man. I’d just like to see him run on with the drinks!’’ Shaun Tait’s T20 XI: Watson Gayle McCullum (wkt) Kohli de Villiers Pollard Afridi Faulkner Steyn Narine

Ravi Bopara in action against Sussex in a T20 game in 2007
BOPARA: EXPERIENCE COUNTS Ravi Bopara, the Essex and England all-rounder, chats to PAUL HISCOCK about T20 cricket and captaining his county… Did you feel it was just a novelty when it was first introduced into our domestic scene? Yes, I think most people thought of it as a bit of a gimmick really. I remember people like Ronnie Irani and some other experienced guys naming it ‘The Mickey Mouse competition’. The big thing at that time was to win the four-day championship and the one-day league and this competition was almost just seen as an opportunity to give some young blokes a game. But now it’s right up there among the most important trophies of the season. Had you had played 20-over cricket in your junior sides at club level? I do remember playing a lot of what was called ‘terriers’ cricket’ – that was 20 overs and everyone had a bowl or bat. But coming into county cricket, In charge: Alec Stewart (left) had your views were the senior guys a mentoring roleinfluenced at Surrey inby2010 although it was important to the youngsters on the so his new job won’t be unfamiliar
staff because it got us a game. When it first came along it was a bit of fun but, to be honest, I learned a lot through it and I think that’s true for a lot of players in the one-day format. Presumably the game really started to evolve once players began to adapt their skills to this format of the game? That’s right, batters worked on their skills and bowlers didn’t care for being smashed around the park so they too developed and worked on their skills. It still is a good fun game though. It’s good fun for the crowds, and it’s good fun for the players, although we do take it seriously because it’s very important that you become good at the game. When you were a younger player making your way in the county game, was it difficult to combine the different disciplines needed between the four-day game and limited-overs
31 cricket, particularly Twenty20? It was a concern because, with T20, you are playing a high-risk game. You don’t want to be playing shots at a swinging ball in four-day cricket so you do have to quickly learn to discipline yourself. Having said that, you need to be adaptable and to be good enough to change your game straight up, particularly with the structure of our domestic season where the games are packed and congested and you get different formats from one day to the next. I’ve heard that next year we are playing one t20 a week. We’ll see how the schedule pans out, but it might make it a bit better.
“When I’m not playing for England, I love coming back to Essex and doing well. The county is close to my heart and I want to win trophies with them.” I suppose that as you become more experienced, it becomes easier to adapt to the varying formats and cope with the heavy schedule?
throughout the rest of the season – and forever really! When I’m not playing for England, I love coming back to Essex and doing well. The county is close to my heart because they are my team and I want to win trophies with them. You captained Essex in the recent match against England. It was an ‘interesting’ experience to say the least? I really enjoyed it although it was a bit hectic at times when we were in the field with players going off injured and substitutes coming on. At one stage, I only had ten men on the field and I thought ‘What’s going on here?’ Then I saw a little lad walking around the boundary, I think he was off the field so I just called him back on. But it all sorted itself out. I know there was a bit of disappointment that the game lost its first-class status but I think you have to look at the bigger picture and what the purpose of the game was really about. Whether it was first-class or a friendly, Essex got what we needed out of the game and, more importantly, England got what they needed out of it heading into the Ashes series. To be fair, that’s what really counts. There were a lot of positives to be taken from the match for both the England and Essex guys.
Yes, you are right, you can’t buy experience. This Essex squad has enough experience to know just what we have to do to be a successful side not only in this format but, in fact, in any format of the game. When you go out to bat or bowl, players know their game but it did take a few years for everyone to come to terms with what is required in T20. It takes four or five years to develop but the boys have had that experience and many are mature players in this format. In my opinion, all good cricketers are able to adapt to any situation in any form of the game, because it’s natural. They are good players, they have good eye and hand co-ordination and they learn quickly. Around the world there are now a lot of very dangerous cricketers in T20 cricket. The limited-overs game has also given you the route back into the England set-up? Yes, it’s nice to be back in the fold and doing well and, hopefully, I can carry the good form on

T20 10th Anniversary
Been there, done that: Essex coach Paul Grayson was a player when T20 started in 2003. Here he makes his ground during as Robin Martin-Jenkins tries to run him out in the game against the Sharks
T20? IT’S A BIT LIKE FOOTBALL
As T20 celebrates it’s 10th anniversary, Paul Grayson – who played in the early years of the competition before becoming Essex coach – talks about the development of the game.
“
I think when the competition first started everyone was very sceptical about it and how to play. In the first couple of years, there wasn’t so much attention to detail or planning but then players started to buy into it and it has become one of the most competitions, not only in this country but worldwide. Now batsmen have become inventive using different shots and techniques while bowlers are
counter-acting that, or trying to, by coming up with new deliveries. There are new regulations and rules coming in to keep coaches and captains on their toes. I think we have the balance of the number of T20 matches just about right in our season over here, we still see Test cricket as the number one format of the game which is right. I believe that T20 should always take a back seat to Test cricket, but that’s just my opinion and I think the balance is right.
33 At Essex, we get very well supported. It’s certainly a very popular game within our own county and others as we’ve seen. We always look forward to the competition, we prepare well although I wouldn’t say it is a welcome break from county cricket. As a coach, I think that T20 cricket is as close as the experiences a football manager goes through when his team plays. I can understand what my brother Simon (manager of Preston North End) goes through on a Tuesday night or a Saturday or whenever his team are in action. The intensity of a T20 game is really high; you get involved with each and every ball because each one can be so vital in the final outcome. With a four-day match, you can sit back and relax more but in T20 everyone is on the edge of their seats because the action happens so quickly. We are all aware that one over can completely alter the outcome of the game, it’s happened for us and
“As a coach, I think that T20 cricket is as close as the experiences a football manager goes through when his team plays. The intensity is really high, you get involved with each and every ball.” against us and one player’s individual performance can often carry his team mates over the finishing line. That’s what happens in this format. In 40 or 50 overs cricket, you often need six or seven players to really perform well for you to win a match but T20 can be settled on one player’s achievements and it can be a cruel game. We are in a very difficult group with so many excellent T20 teams and it’s often referred to as the group of death because everyone can beat each other. Also, you need to keep the momentum going right the way through the competition. In a perfect world, I would prefer that the teams are drawn out into three groups rather than regionalise the groups. I appreciate that there could be a lot of travelling, as we have seen in our YB40 group this year where we are with Durham and Lancashire, but I think a draw would be fairer.
I know that the powers that be want local derbies because it gives supporters greater opportunity to watch their teams and maybe boost attendances when they are away from home but personally I think it would be fairer to have a draw out of the hat. There are some very serious T20 players at the majority of counties now and it would give fans the opportunity of seeing some of these other world class players in action. I’m not sure what other coaches think about it, but I would be happy to play around the country rather than always playing the same teams at the group stage. I’m not saying that there are not some excellent sides in the other two groups - of course there are as history shows - but it would be a fairer challenge and have some different teams to play against in the group stage. We’ve brought in Shaun Tait to join Hamish Rutherford for the competition and we are delighted to have them. We feel that we had a good squad even without those two lads but with them, we are that much stronger and both are potential matchwinners in their own right. One can take the game away from the opposition in the way that he strikes the ball while the other is one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket and a specialist in this format. We expect them to have a major impact on the side and have every confidence that both will do that.”
Game changer: Watch out for Hamish Rutherford at the top of the Eagles’ order
