he Glamorganshire Golf Club can be found in the seaside town of Penarth, near to Cardiff, in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan in Wales.
Glamorganshire Golf Club
Our Club, founded in 1890, is steeped in history and is the birthplace of the Stableford method of golf scoring. This hugely-popular system, revered by handicap golfers the world over, was the brainchild of a former Glamorganshire member. We also have a longstanding relationship with members of the legendary Barbarians rugby team. But while we are proud of our past we are always looking to the future and in recent years the Clubhouse has been completely re-developed to offer excellent dining and changing room facilities. There have also been numerous improvements to the golf course.
Our 6,184-yard parkland golf course (par 70) provides a fair test to golfers of all abilities. Even when your game is not at its best you can enjoy the stunning views over the sea and look forward to availing yourself of our famous Glamorganshire hospitality back in the Clubhouse. Good golf and fine catering is enjoyed daily by our members and makes us a popular destination for visitors and golfing societies. Club History
T
he Glamorganshire came about following a public meeting held at the Jubilee Hall, Penarth, on October 20, 1890, when interested parties gathered “to consider the advisability of forming a golf club”.
Lord Windsor gifted a plot of land in Lower Penarth which, according to the minutes of that meeting comprised “a few rough fields which those acquainted with the game considered very suitable.” Lord Windsor – who subsequently (in 1905) was created Earl of Plymouth – was named the Club’s first President, a position he held right up until 1977. Initially, a nine-hole course was created, but such was its success that it soon became apparent there was an appetite for a full 18 holes. Work in turning this dream into reality began in 1896 and the following year the expanded course was not only able to
welcome players, but also enabled the Welsh Amateur Championship to take place in Penarth for the first time. Although the first golf clubs to be formed in Wales were at Tenby (1888), Rhyl (March 1890) and Caernarvonshire (June 1890), it was Glamorganshire Golf Club which first introduced the game into the heavily populated and industrialised south east of Wales. Although the Club was formed in 1890, it did not admit its first Lady Members until 1892 when the course was revamped and nine new holes were created over the hill near

Downs Wood and down to what are now the 11th and 15th holes. Two years later the ladies formed their own section, following a meeting at the Lansdowne Hotel which saw Mrs MaineTucker elected as the first ladies captain. The first ladies club championship was played in 1904, with league matches first being played in 1933. Like at many clubs, there was much upheaval during the Second World War, with food being grown on part of the course to aid the war effort and the Army taking over the 17th fairway.
The course was also the location for an experimental rocket battery as part of the town’s air defences. The battery was manned by 50 soldiers from the Royal Artillery who were billeted in the small ‘village’ of Nissen huts built in the Club’s grounds. Unannounced practice firings of the rocket battery frequently caused concern and alarm amongst local residents. Several public air raid shelters, for Lower Penarth residents and workers at the Cement Factory, were constructed in the Club grounds and on the land that now forms part of Cosmeston Country Park. This explains a letter the Club received in recent
years whose author explained his birth certificate listed his place of birth as “17th Fairway, The Glamorganshire Golf Club”! It was not until seven years after the war was over that the 17th fairway was released back to the Club. In 1990, the Club celebrated its centenary with a number of events which have remained part of the extensive list of annual fixtures. A Centenary Ball was held at the Copthorne Hotel, and a number of special events in the Clubhouse.

The Stableford Scoring System
T
he Stableford method of golf scoring, a system now utilised and revered the world over by amateur golfers, was first devised by a Glamorganshire Club member, Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford. He first tried it out on fellow members on September 30, 1898.

As now, the system awarded one point for one over par, two for a par and three for a birdie. The stroke index system having yet to be invented, one third of the player’s handicap was added at the end. Stableford himself did not actually participate in his initial experiment though he donated a special prize to the winner, Mr W Hastings Watson, who scored 42 points. There is no indication of what the members thought about the alternative of scoring by points or, indeed, whether they tried it out on any other occasions.
A portrait of Dr Stableford hangs in the Clubhouse. A good golfer in his own right, he won the Club Cup at The Glamorganshire in 1898 and 1899. He left the Club when he set off to serve as an Army Surgeon in the Boer War, joining Royal Porthcawl when he returned to Wales in 1907. It was to be 31 years before he decided to try his system again. By then he was a member at Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral. This time the whole of the player’s handicap was added to his score but it wasn’t until the system was allied hole by hole to the stroke index that it took off to become the world’s most popular scoring system.

The Glamorganshire and The Barbarians
I
t is probable that no other golf club in the world can lay claim to have hosted so many great rugby players from all over the world, because the famous Barbarians visited The Glamorganshire Club every Easter Sunday between 1901 and 1996 as part of their traditional Easter weekend touring fixtures against famous Welsh clubs.
They played their golf tournament under their unique rules and had a sing-song with Club members in the evening. During most of the 20th century the best rugby players in the world would have tasted the Club’s hospitality.
Their Sunday ‘official golf frolic’ was regarded a major part of the Baa-Baas’ legend and, in the eyes of most of their players, was almost of equal importance to the weekend’s rugby. The competitive sporting drive of the rugby stars was as evident on the golf course as it was on any rugby field. In 1924-25 in recognition of the generosity of The Glamorganshire, 95 Barbarian members paid for a perpetual silver cup called the Barbarians Challenge Cup, to be competed for annually by Club members on Easter Monday to commemorate the eagerly anticipated Easter visits by the Barbarians.
The mounted head of a Springbok, presented to the Barbarians team after they defeated the South African national team in 1961, remains on display during the summer months in the Club bar. Alas, the arrival of professionalism in rugby means that the Easter Tour is no more but the magnificent Barbarians Challenge Cup remains one of the most highlyprized trophies among the Club’s annual competitions.

Glamorganshire Achievements
N
ever let it be said that members of the Glamorganshire do not like their golf. In fact, it seems some just cannot get enough of the game!
A remarkable feat of golfing endurance - a world record for a long time - was created by K H McIlroy and H G Lewis Junior on July 3rd, 1939. They set out at 4.15am and played eight rounds and two holes before bad light prevented them from continuing. However, the feat was improved upon by two Members on June 27th 1996: the then Captain, Robert Edwards and Martin Price, now a Past Captain, who completed eight
rounds and four holes – and no putts were conceded!
On a more serious note, the Glamorganshire Golf Club has:
Incredibly, even this fantastic feat was surpassed when Jordan Price-Davis, stepson of the same Martin Price, and Harry Rigby, played eight rounds and eight holes in a marathon 17-hour stretch at the Club on Sunday June 26, 2011 - walking the equivalent distance of Penarth to Swansea in the process!
• Produced three Welsh amateur champions
A party at the Clubhouse on New Year’s Eve 1999 saw the then President, John Adams strike the first ball of the new Millennium off the first tee. He was joined by a few others playing with illuminated golf balls!
• Provided inspiration and expertise for the creation of several other South Wales Clubs, including those at Dinas Powys, Southerndown and Radyr.

Mark Mouland – a Glamorganshire Legend
E
uropean Tour winner Mark Mouland is probably the finest golfer ever to emerge from the Glamorganshire. Born in 1961, he is the son of long-time Club professional Sid Mouland, himself a six-time Welsh champion.
It was clear from an early age that Mark was destined for great things. After becoming Welsh and British Boys Champion in 1976 (still the youngest ever winner at 15 years and 4 months), and BBC Wales junior sportsman of the year in 1977, he turned professional in 1981. He played 520 tournaments on the European Tour (the eighth most experienced player ever), winning twice, the Car Care Plan International in 1986 and the KLM Dutch Open two years later. The second victory was all the more remarkable as he had had to fight his way back to full fitness after breaking both ankles and feet in an horrific motorway crash.

The most lucrative four days of his career came at the 2001 Smurfit European Open, where his fifth-placed finish earned him a cheque for €140,870. Mark won the British Par 3 Championship in 2008, and was runner-up in 2010. He is now enjoying a “second career” on the Seniors Tour and claimed his maiden win on that Tour in 2011.

The Course
O
ur golf course, enjoying stunning views over the sea, is not actually a links, but an 18-hole parkland course on undulating ground at the eastern edge of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.
With narrow wood-lined fairways, wellguarded greens, water hazards and over eighty strategic bunkers, it offers a stern but fair test to golfers at all levels. At its maximum length, the course plays to 6,184 yards to a par of 70 off the back championship tees.
Straight hitting is at a premium on any golf course, but particularly here. The course over the last five to ten years has certainly toughened up a lot because of the growth of a lot of the trees, so if you err from the fairways you can expect to be penalised. Our Professional, Andrew Kerr-Smith, points out that on very few holes if you miss the fairway can you advance via an aerial route back on to the fairway. You have to either chop out sideways or chip out the other side and go down another fairway, which will likely cost you on average at least half a shot and maybe a full shot.

The areas around the greens are very undulating and if you miss the putting surface left and right your ball can easily end up in a bunker or take a bounce further into the rough.
As for the greens themselves, they are very smooth and a pleasure to putt on. Many have subtle slopes which catch out the uninitiated, so the more times you play our course the more accustomed you will become to them and the better you will score.

Signature holes? There are many, but the 16th and 17th certainly live long in the memory for many. The 16th is a gorgeous picture-perfect hole. A bit of a dogleg to the left, as you are approaching the green on the right-hand side you can see all the way up the Bristol Channel across to Westernsuper-Mare one side and towards Ilfracombe the other. On a clear day you can see both Severn bridges. The 17th is equally majestic. Before you play your inviting downhill second to a green framed by mature trees, take a moment to survey the seascape on the horizon.

lan ahead for your visit to The Glamorganshire and make the most of your round with our course map. Our resident Golf Professional, Andrew Kerr-Smith, has provided you with a series of tips, a suggested way of playing each hole.
Hole 1, 400 yards, par 4
Hole 3, 532 yards, par 5
You should keep to the left-hand side of the fairway to avoid the bunker at the right at 211 yards. For your second shot, take one club more as there is 15 to 20 yards of flat ground in front of the green.
Keep to the right-hand side of the fairway with your tee shot. Inevitably, when playing your second shot, you will have the ball above your feet, so aim again down the right-hand side of the fairway to allow for a slight pull to the left. Once again, there is a good 10 to 15 yards of flat ground in front of the green which you should allow for by taking one more club for your third shot.
Hole 2, 119 yards, par 3 You should try to play to the back of the green which is the widest part, so, aim to hit your tee shot 105 yards (uphill) or maybe a little more.

From the tee, straight is best, but if not the right-hand side of the fairway will do. Three cross bunkers will be visible on your second shot, running diagonally across the fairway, with 50 yards between the first and third bunker. Take more club than you would think. The green is very long and undulating. Allow for this with any pitch shots or long putts.
Do not go left or try to cut the corner heroic shots invariably end in disaster. Keep to the right half of the fairway taking care not to run into the fairway bunker. Once beyond the cross bunkers there is again a good 25 yards of flat ground in front of the green, so take one club more for your second shot.
From the tee most shots drift right due to the trees and out of bounds on the left which push you that way. There is a bunker on the right at 200 yards, so maybe use a 3-wood or a hybrid for your tee shot. Decide whether to go over the ditch with your second shot - it is a good 10 yards wide. The green is often wet at the front and slopes towards you.

Plays a little longer than you think due to unseen ground over the front bunker. Take one club more.
It is better to hit your tee shot up the lefthand side, then just keep going up that side of the fairway. The bunker on the left-hand side of the green has a good 10 to 15 yards of fairway behind it. With the green being elevated and sloping towards you, one club more is better; or, if you can play your third shot with run rather than height, you should achieve a better result.
If you are going to miss the green, then do not miss it left! Anywhere down that side is in the ditch, or a lost ball.
Hole 8, 337 yards, par 4 Decide whether or not to go over the wide ditch off the tee, you do not gain a lot by risking it. Lay up short to the right if in doubt. Once again the ground in front of the green is flat and the green slopes upwards, so one club more is the key in club selection.
Hole 11, 502 yards, par 5 Your tee shot ideally should be straight but down the right-hand side of the fairway is the next best option. Beware of the three cross bunkers with your second shot. If in any doubt, you should lay up ready for a full pitch third shot to the green. It is better to play an aerial shot to this green rather than a runner.

A straight tee shot is a must. If in doubt, take a hybrid club for accuracy. The green is elevated with deep bunkers on the right. Do not go left, so take one more club and go straight at the middle of the green. The green is slippery from the back, with big swings from the sides. Allow plenty for the borrow.
Hole 14, 181 yards, par 3
Because of the shape and slope of this hole, the ball always seems to want to drift over to the right-hand side of the fairway and into the trees. It is best to tee your ball up on the right-hand side of the tee making it easier to hit up the left-hand side of the fairway. Your second and subsequent shots are going to be slightly uphill, and there is much ground to cover in front of the green, so take at least one club more to allow for the fact that you will hit the ball much higher. The green is double tiered so, if you can, it is better to run the ball in.
Hole 13, 182/153 yards, par 3 Your tee shot is best straight but if you are off line you are best to go left and hope that you find the left-hand bunker. It is very shallow so a little chip and run is all that is
When you look at the course guide, this hole seems to be quite straightforward. It is not. Unless you are feeling very confident, the best way to play this hole is to lay up to the front of the green, and play your second with a chip and run shot, or even a putter. A four is never bad on this par 3 hole.

Hole 18, 189 yards, par 3
Aim for the marker post with your tee shot. It may not look like the correct direction, but it is. The two bunkers on the left which you cannot see from the tee are not such a problem as the shape of the hole lends itself to hitting tee shots to the right of centre. The green has a narrow entrance with a deep bunker on the right. If you miss the green it is better to do so on the right, but that leaves a very difficult pitch on to the very narrow green. It has a considerable slope from front to back so it is much faster when putting front to back than you think. Good luck!
The slope of the fairway lends itself to a left-to-right-shaped tee shot but once again, straight is best. You will most likely have a downhill lie for your second shot, so remember that the ball flies lower from a downhill lie and you should take one less club. It is a tricky green with a large step in the middle, so allow plenty for borrow when coming from the sides. Beware of the downhill and uphill ball speeds when putting.
Usually plays into a prevailing wind so if you are taking a fairway wood off the tee beware the out of bounds to the left of the green. If in doubt, lay up with a club which cannot reach the out of bounds leaving yourself with a simple chip and run shot up the green which does slope a little towards you, but is otherwise quite flat.

Practice Facilities

he Glamorganshire prides itself in being able to offer the complete package to prospective members – an outstanding, picturesque golf course complemented by some outstanding off-course facilities which are comparable to any that can be found for miles around.
This also applies to the practice facilities, which make the pursuit of perfection or continuing improvement a pleasurable and rewarding experience rather than a chore. There are two substantial practice areas adjacent to the Clubhouse. The first, of around 100 yards in length, is ideal for pitching and has distance markers, plus two or three flags set in properly cut target areas. Then there is a vast area running up the hill opposite which is long enough to hit every club in the bag including driver. Distance markers are set at 50-yard intervals. On both practice grounds members and guests bring their own balls and are able to hit off turf.
The short game is not overlooked, either. There is a perfect practice bunker, a chipping green as good as any on the golf course and a lovely putting green in front of the Clubhouse. For those needing a quick hit to get loose before their round there are two well-maintained nets just adjacent to the Clubhouse.

he Men’s, Ladies, Veterans, Juniors, Wayfarers and Halletts teams have a full schedule of fixtures and, with our popular Winter League and the various in-Club social golfing groups, there is competitive golf available to all standards of player throughout the year . The Men’s first team field a side in the South Wales Golf League and in 2008 claimed the Premier League title for the first time in 26 years. The league, which runs from March to August, is incredibly competitive, featuring 13 divisions, with home and away matches between clubs taking the form of three
foursome matchplay games over 18 holes. There is promotion and relegation between the leagues and it is the perfect environment to discover whether you have the game and the temperament for competitive golf! You do not, however, need to be a scratch golfer to be able to enjoy competitive golf at the Glamorganshire and we enter teams in well-known local leagues known as the Wayfarers and the Halletts for players in the mid and higher handicap ranges. The Wayfarers Golf Society was formed 27 years ago, the main purpose being to bring together golfers from golf clubs in South East Wales in an inter-club team competition. Over the years, the
membership has grown from 14 clubs to 48 clubs and the area now covered includes Powys and Gloucestershire. Well over 1,000 golfers take part each year and activities include participation in league and knockout competitions, at least one charity day and numerous tours and away days. Membership of the Wayfarers is now restricted to members of golf clubs which are affiliated to the Welsh Golf Union, who are aged over 18 and within the handicap range 10 to 17 inclusive. This range was selected because this was the only category of golfers which was not already catered for by existing competitions in the area. Matches are played as greensomes, with five pairs per side playing matchplay off scratch.

Members’ Golf continued... An excellent way for new golfers or high handicappers to meet new people and play matches against other clubs is by putting their name forward for the Halletts team, which is for those with a handicap of 17.5 and above. At present the Halletts League has 40 member clubs split into five divisions. The member clubs compete annually for the Hallett League Cup, the Jim Davies Knockout Cup including a plate competition and the Presidents Cup. Home and away matches are played between four pairs per club. As well as the many honours board competitions enjoyed by members at the
Glamorganshire each year, there are two hugely popular additional events which are greatly anticipated and eagerly contested by members. The first is the Ryder Cup, whereby a Wales side plays a Rest of the World side at the end of the golfing season, with 18 players per team doing battle in foursomes in the morning and fourballs in the afternoon. Just as in the Ryder Cup, each captain has wildcard picks available (four per side) to complete his team, but the remainder of the squad earn their places through their position in an Order of Merit table which is run throughout the season, with members accumulating points for their finishing
positions in 12 qualifying medal events. So while you may not win a trophy during the course of the campaign, consistent play can be rewarded with a place in this very popular event. A pre-match Texas Scramble and dinner is always held to which all playing members are invited.

Members’ Golf continued... Arguably the one competition enjoyed most by many of the Members is the Sunday Foursomes throughout the autumn and spring, known as Snakes, which has been running since the 1950s.
It was played initially as a fourball, then at some time changed to a greensome foursomes and subsequently to straight foursomes. So popular did Snakes become in the 1980s that much congestion was caused by queues at the 1st and 9th to start each match. It was decided to stage a staggered “shotgun” start, with two matches allocated to each hole and a mass start to take place at 9am, with 144 players taking to the course and much banter taking place in the Clubhouse after the morning’s proceedings.
The Ladies enjoy their own annual programme of events within the Club, with monthly medals, Stableford competitions and honours board competitions such as the Club Championship which dates back to 1904. Three teams are also fielded in the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League.

Juniors
T
he Glamorganshire Golf Club has a thriving Junior Members’ section, with an extensive coaching programme, regular competitions for all ages and a full schedule of team fixtures. The Club looks to develop its younger players, recognising that these are our senior Members of the future. The Junior Organiser and his support team have a structure in place which not only allows junior golfers to become better players, but places emphasis on the enjoyment of the game. We offer coaching at evenings and weekends to youngsters in three different age brackets,

for those aged 6-8, 9-14 and 15-18. Juniors are able to take to the course whenever they please with very few restrictions. In addition, juniors boys with a handicap of 18 or less or junior girls with a handicap of 36 or less may play in monthly medal, bogey and Stableford competitions run by the main Club. There are also numerous competitions run for our younger golfers throughout the season and the Junior Section has its own presentation night in early December.

The Glamorganshire enters a team in the East Section of the Junior League run by the Glamorgan County Golf Union. Foursomes matches are enjoyed home and away against the other four teams in the group with the incentive of a place in the semifinals to the best performing clubs. With play off the men’s back tees, the league gives youngsters a taste of what competitive golf is all about.

Society days are normally Thursdays and Fridays except Bank Holidays but small groups may be taken on other days when tee-times are available. he Glamorganshire is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our Club in 1890. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The open season tends to kick off in May with a team Stableford competition for Ladies. July is a busy month, with the Club hosting individual Stableford events for Men, Juniors and Senior golfers, while there is another team open event for the Ladies in August, as well as a Mixed Pairs Open.

Pride of place, however, goes to the prestigious Gentleman’s Individual Open which takes place towards the end of September. A 36-hole medal event for golfers with handicaps no higher than 5, it is known as the Baffie and draws a high-quality field featuring some of the best amateur golfers in the region. For those with Sat Nav, our postcode is CF64 5UP. Driving Directions from M4 At junction 33, exit toward Barry/Penarth/ A4232. After 8.2 miles, at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto A4232 heading to A4232. After 0.2 miles take the A4055 ramp to Barry/ Penarth/A4160, and bear right. After 0.2 miles, passing through two sets of traffic lights on the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto A4055. Go through two more sets of lights towards Dinas Powys. After 1.1 miles, bear left at the traffic lights by The Merrie Harrier pub, and turn left at the immediate next set of lights into B4267/ Redlands Road. Continue to follow Redlands Road into
Lavernock Road for a further 2.2 miles and you will find The Glamorganshire Golf Club on the right. The entrance way, which is slightly hidden, is just after a sharp right hand bend with Westbourne Road on your left. If you pass Brockhill Rise on your left with the Spa shop, you have gone too far!
