History
H
alesowen Golf Club was founded in 1906 with Walter Somers, a forgemaster and major local figure, playing a leading role. Mr Somers was to become our Club’s first president. Early records are scarce but it is known that the first holes were in the general area of the current 5th to 12th with the first clubhouse somewhere in the Mucklow Hill area and shortly afterwards transferred to a cottage on the site of the houses by the 14th green.
Starting a course from scratch, even with the less demanding requirements of 100 years ago, was no easy task but expert help was at hand from Mr W P Lewis, Professional at Kings Norton and a member of an extensive golfing dynasty. He had laid out a nine-hole course by 1911 described as “Bogey 38” (bogey being a generous form of ‘Par’) with the greens “very tricky requiring the utmost skill” - nothing new then!
In those early days the grass was cut using a horse-drawn mower and it was not until 1930 that the club purchased its first tractor for the purpose. Today the greenstaff have at their disposal the latest state-of-the-art fairway and greens mowers plus all other equipment necessary to provide the course in tip-top condition.
In 1911 the Club acquired use of part of Leasowes House as a clubhouse and an official opening was held in June. By 1913 the course was up to the full 18 holes.

The Course
T
he 18-hole course is situated in beautiful parkland countryside, with stunning views towards the Clent Hills. The course is kept in peak condition by a very dedicated team of greenkeepers, headed by Tim Dorrell. Down the centre of the fairways, you will find coloured discs marking specific distances to the centre of the green at 200 yards (blue), 150 yards (yellow) and 100 yards (red). The course measures 5,746 yards from the white tees, 5,453 yards from the yellow tees
and 4,887 yards from the red tees. While it is not long by today’s standards, the Standard Scratch Score is only one less than the challenging par of 69. There are four short holes, with the 3rd representing the lone par-5, which plays 475 yards from the back tees. Take a deep breath after marking your card for the front nine, as there is a serious golfing test to come, with three of the hardest holes on the course, the 10th, 11th and 12th all par-4s stretching to more than 400 yards off the white tees. The dog-leg 13th is no pushover, either, especially if you
do not reach the corner with your tee-shot. Don’t feel however, that the course is a monster: it is nothing other than fair and the closing stretch offers the chance to end the round on a high and claim back some shots. The 15th and 16th are two short holes which reward the golfer with good distance control of their mid-irons, while both the 17th and 18th are drivable par 4s which offer serious birdie opportunities.

Tour the Course
I
f you have never played Halesowen before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Jon Nicholas our PGA Professional.
Hole 1 (Clent View) 303 yards, par 4 From the tee try to aim on the left half of the green, as when the ball lands on the fairway, it will run down to the right. When playing in to the green, be aware of the slope at the front.
10
Halesowen Golf Club www.halesowengc.co.uk
Hole 2 (Ladypool) 361 yards, par 4 From the tee, try to keep your ball on the right half of the fairway, allowing the slope of the fairway to take the ball to the left. When playing in to the long narrow green, make sure you have enough club, or you will find your ball rolls down towards the next tee. Remember, when putting from front to back of the green, it is slower than back to front. Hole 3 (Copper Beech) 475 yards, par 5 Keep your drive up the right-hand side to give a clear view for your next shot. The long hitters need to aim on the edge of the copper beech tree, being careful with
a driver that you don’t run through the fairway. Keep approach shots up the righthand side, as the green slopes to the left. Again, when hitting into the green, take a little more club than you think as you are playing uphill. Hole 4 (The Punchbowl) 179 yards, par 3 Tee shots should be aimed at the left half of the green. As long as your ball clears the front bunker, it should roll on to the green, If you hit it a bit long, you may be given a reprieve by the bank at the back of the green, which should stop your ball and push it back on the green.
Hole 5 (Tree Tangle) 460 yards, par 4 A long par 4 that needs all your concentration. Keep the tee shots up the right half of the fairway, long hitters take your line over the top fairway bunker. When hitting into the green, keep your ball to the right half and the slopes will feed the ball into the middle of the green. Hole 6 (Club View) 190 yards, par 3 Straightforward par 3. Take aim at the middle of the green. Plays a little shorter than its 172 yards (off the yellow tees). Careful you don’t hit it long and left, as you will have a difficult chip back on to the green.
Hole 7 (Brocton) 385 yards, par 4 Again a good, testing, par 4. Keep your drive up the right as the slope of the fairway will bring you back to the centre. Long hitters think about a 3 wood or hybrid. The further you drive on this hole, the narrower it gets. When hitting into the raised green, take a club more, as the false front makes it look shorter than it is. Hole 8 (Mucklows) 272 yards, par 4 Short par 4. Aim at the middle of the fairway. A tee shot of around 180 yards will leave a short pitch into the green. Long hitters may be able to take on the green, but be careful; there is Out of Bounds all down the left-hand side.
Hole 9 (Jacksholm) 336 yards, par 4 A good hole to finish the front 9. Aim centre right of the fairway from the elevated tee, allowing the slope to take the ball down to the left. Playing into a raised green, you will need to hit a bit more club. Be careful of the Out of Bounds at the back of the green and make sure you don’t land on the slope at the front, as it will leave you a difficult chip onto the green.

Hole 10 (Rideways) 402 yards, par 4 Amen Corner, a great start to the back nine. Full attention is needed over the next three holes. Keep your drive down the left to give you a clear shot towards the green. Playing into a raised green, you need more club than you think. Anything short will start to roll back towards you. Try not to leave yourself a downhill putt. Hole 11 (The Cross) 402 yards, par 4 From the tee, aim to the right of the fairway. Long hitters can take on the hill aiming just right of the green. If you get to the top of the hill, it leaves a short straightforward pitch to the green. If you have not made the
12
Halesowen Golf Club www.halesowengc.co.uk
top of the hill, you will have a blind second shot. Aim just right of the cross you can see behind the green. Hole 12 (Twin Oaks) 460 yards, par 4 Good par 4 which needs all your concentration. With the tee shot, keep up the left-hand side. If you can reach the green with your second shot, you will need to take aim to the left of the green. If you are hitting short of the green, you can aim a little straighter. When on the green, all putts slope towards the lake.
Hole 13 (Willow Gap) 313 yards, par 4 Position off the tee is very important. Aim to the corner of the dogleg, about 175 yards. This will leave you a pitch of around 120 yards to the green. Pay attention on the green, it is not as flat as it looks. Hole 14 (The Leasowes) 366 yards, par 4 Position off the tee again is important. The further you drive, the tighter the fairway becomes. Aim at the big tree on the left, hitting the ball no more than 200 yards. The slope will take your ball down towards the middle of the fairway, leaving a short iron into the green. Try to leave your ball below the hole.
Hole 15 (Foxes Lair) 150 yards, par 3 Good par 3, playing into a two-tier green. If you see two flags the hole is on the upper tier, if you see just a yellow flag it is on the bottom tier. The hole at 150 yards plays one club longer than you think. Hole 16 (Wee Three) 156 yards, par 3 Accuracy on this par 3 is vital. Aim to the centre of the green. Miss the green left and you have a difficult chip shot back onto the green.
Hole 17 (The Dell) 265 yards, par 4 A short par 4, with two ways to play it: Either take on the green, aiming at the right half of the green with a gentle draw, but being careful with Out of Bounds all down the left. Alternatively, play short of the road, which is a shot of 170 yards, leaving you less than 100 yards to the green. Take care when reading the green, there are a few subtle borrows.
Hole 18 (Shenstones) 271 yards, par 4 A gentle finishing hole. Again if you’re a long hitter, you can take the green on. Aim at the left-hand bunker with a gentle fade, or play up to the centre of the fairway with a shot of around 190 yards, leaving a short pitch on to the green. Anything going towards the trees on the right will result in a chip back out to the fairway.

Members’ Golf Gentlemen There are many competitions and also opportunities to play with existing members both in club competitions and in friendly matches, which are played home and away throughout the summer. All members are welcome to put their names forward for these matches, a notice to this effect can be found on the club noticeboard. The club captain is only too willing to press new members into action, more importantly golfers of all levels of ability can play with the emphasis being on friendly golf, with a great opportunity to play and get to know some existing members and play some local courses.
24
Halesowen Golf Club www.halesowengc.co.uk
On a more competitive front we have a West Midlands Golf League team, again members are welcome to put their names forward to the relevant captains, though there is a handicap requirement with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 15. For those who just want to concentrate on improving their handicap, we have a regular stream of monthly competitions (Medals, Pars, Stablefords) and also numerous cup competitions which are also played over the summer months.
Added to all of this, we are not just a golf club, we have a number of social members and a very active social calendar, including quiz nights, skittles evenings and race nights to name but a few, added to more formal occasions like the Summer Ball and Annual Dinner and Dance.
Ladies The ladies take part in a wide selection of trophies throughout the year which are presented on the club’s trophy night. Our ladies also have a representation in the Droitwich Inter-Club League. A draw of the 24 clubs is made every two years and each club in the League plays in one of the four divisions against their opponents. Matches featuring teams of five per side are played both home and away in alternate years. These take place between April and June and finish with a knockout phase featuring the four group winners.
The ladies also have the opportunity to play in friendly matches and there are always willing members to take out new golfers in order to help them with their game and to find their feet around the course and clubhouse. Although you can never tire of our wonderful parkland course and breathtaking views, there are also plenty of opportunities to play other local courses in friendly and competition matches.
We also have friendly club competitions throughout the year, where we get the chance to show the Gentlemen how to play. The Ladies Captain and Ladies Vice Captain publish a regular newsletter, which can be downloaded from the club website. Halesowen Golf Club Ladies are also part of the Ladies Section of the Worcestershire Amateur Golf Union of Golf Clubs and are proud to support county competitions.

Individual Medal or Stableford competitions are normally played, however Alliance and Team competitions are also held. During the year members compete for: • 10 Cups and Trophies (Medal, Stableford or Par) • Club Championship (Best four medal rounds out of six) • Seniors Captain Prize (Match Play) Winners of the major competitions are presented with their trophies at the Seniors’ Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening.
Enjoyed on a home and away basis, the Seniors play eight local clubs in friendly matches, which are followed by lunch, genial hospitality and camaraderie. alesowen Golf Club has an active junior section and does everything it can to encourage its younger players.
recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities. Independently audited, it is recognition of the club’s commitment towards junior and entry-level golf.
Many young golfers have progressed well at the club since joining by improving their game and thus lowered their handicaps, by entering and winning competitions. Halesowen Golf Club provides the perfect environment to nurture young golfers so that they can achieve their full potential. Whether they have aspirations to progress to the professional ranks or simply seek to lower their handicap the club is the ideal venue to realise these goals. There is good comradeship amongst the juniors of the club.
We look forward to discussing any enquiries with parents who are in search of a friendly and professional club and a safe and secure environment for their children to join and develop their golf.
Halesowen is proud to have been awarded the prestigious GolfMark, a national scheme run by England Golf that identifies and
Each year the club enters a team in the West Midlands Junior Golf League which features competitive play at home and away and an eagerly-anticipated finals day at the end of the season for the best performing clubs. The league’s stated aim was to introduce competitive golf to the young players who, it was hoped, would later form the backbone of the clubs’ senior teams. As part of the Jon Nicholas Golf School
we have a thriving Junior Academy for youngsters aged between 5 and 13 which provides a pathway from school TriGolf into becoming a fully-fledged member of the club. A grant to the Jon Nicholas Golf School Junior Academy has helped purchase more equipment meaning that children from all backgrounds can find out if golf is for them without having to make an initial outlay to buy an expensive set of clubs. Children learn the basics of golf during a six-week course at Halesowen through the academy and then can receive reduced fees to join the club as well as being entered into competitions. For more details, speak to the club’s PGA Professional Jon Nicholas by calling 0121 501 3606 (option 3).

Information for Visitors
V
isitors are warmly welcomed at the club throughout the year, at any time during the week subject to course availability and at weekends after 11.30am from November to March and after 2pm from April to October. Please contact the Golf Professional prior to arrival to ensure a tee time is available to avoid clashes with members and societies.
For Health and Safety reasons all playing visitors must report to the Professional’s shop prior to commencing play and must use the changing facilities provided to
change clothes and shoes. We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we do request that visitors abide by our dress code both on the course and in the clubhouse, specific details of which can be found on our website, www.halesowengc.co.uk Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able
to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. The club also has a rule banning the use of mobile phones in the clubhouse (except the locker room) and on the course. We request that visitors comply with this rule for the peace and enjoyment of the golf and socialising in the clubhouse. Special rates are available to holders of the Worcestershire Union County Card and to juniors, who must be accompanied by an adult, and there are trolleys and buggies available for hire.

Open Competitions
H
alesowen is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1906. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.
One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities.
A Senior Pairs Open is held for men in August and early September sees a Men’s Autumn Open, featuring two per team playing better ball Stableford.
The Open season generally starts with two events in May, a Senior Mixed Team Stableford competition aimed at players aged 55 and over with teams comprising two ladies and two men. A similar event for men takes place later in the month.
Events may vary slightly from year to year, but you will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.halesowengc.co.uk, together with information about how you can reserve your place.
One of the main events of the year comes in July with the Senior Men’s Individual Stableford which features a substantial prize fund in addition to prizes in each of four age categories.
