Club History

T

he Knowle Golf Club was founded in 1905 by Dr. J. J. P. Lucas, P. C. Berrill and W. P. Lucas. This club came into being because a few local sportsmen thought it would be good for the neighbourhood to run a golf club, so the old Race Course was prospected and a 9-hole course was laid out, with one hole somewhere approaching half a mile in length.

Of those old sportsmen none unfortunately remain. Other stalwarts of those first days were W. Evan, A. W. E. Stampe and E. E. Shellard and some of the early meetings were held in the skittle alley of the Talbot Inn. None had played much previously and the subscription was about ten shillings. Things were not allowed to remain inactive, so despite vigorous opposition on the part of the farmer-tenant, who laid down the law as to the size of the greens, the width of the fairways, and the number of times the mowing machine should be used in a year, the Club began to grow. In turn, Mr. McLean and then Mr. Dugdale found that golf secretarial duties

took too much of their time, and in 1906 Mr. Percy C. Berrill assumed the reins of Secretary, a post which he held for thirteen years. More land was acquired, thanks to the cooperation of the President, Mr. H. B. Napier, who used his influence to persuade his tenants how very desirable it would be to have golfers playing over their land. Thus in 1912 the Knowle Golf Club was in possession of an 18hole course, the new nine holes being admitted by visitors as amongst the most sporting in the district. At the same time, the old Race Course Pavilion was re-constructed and decorated, and so became the nineteenth hole.

KNOWLE Golf Club 7

In a few months the membership had risen to 140 men and a good proportion of the fair sex; and inter-club matches entered into the programme. First the Great War of 1914-18 and then the Corporation housing scheme almost put the Club out of existence, but in spite of difficulties, it was to thrive.

A covetous eye had often been cast on the land where the present course is situated; a lease was secured and on the 3rd February 1925 the present course was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol. The course since the late 1930s has been owned by the club, and although more houses now adjoin it than was the case when it was first opened it retains its beauty.

First the gentleman farmer’s Georgian house known as ‘The Hollies’, just off West Town Lane, was adapted and used as the clubhouse and players used to walk down to the course across fields over the rough track where the present road known as The Fairway stands. In the 1950s the Club embarked upon a scheme for a new clubhouse, its present home, which was opened on the 10th December 1955 by the Lord Mayor of Bristol. It has been improved and extended since to almost double its original size.

Our Approach

H

ere are Knowle Golf Club we like to think of ourselves as traditional yet forward-thinking..

We’re fortunate in that we have a two-tee start so that Singles and 3&4 Balls are able to start separately ensuring that play is seldom held up. Our members tell us that they love that they don’t have to book tee times, and it is one of the advantages of membership, that with the exception of some competition days, members can just roll up and play.

We’re a traditional Club in many respects but we only hold dear the traditions that are worth preserving. You won’t find outdated attitudes or petty rules here, we are about all that is good in the game. Knowle Golf Club is exactly what this brochure and our website portrays - a successful club that’s home to a beautiful course that gives, and will continue to give, a great deal of joy to all those fortunate to play or visit here.

The Course

F

rom first sight of the course, it elicits anticipation and hopefulness in players of all skill levels. Knowle tests one’s perceptual ability, judgment, decision-making, shot making, and emotional poise and is interesting and engaging without being overly demanding.

The beautiful JH Taylor design makes full use of the topography and play twists, turns and flows over a variety of interesting landforms with each hole offering its own visual identity. Some holes offer respite and opportunities for birdies, but overall Knowle will provide an enthralling examination of the full range of golfing skills. The outward nine has two par-3s and one par-5. At 2,887 yards (par 35) it is considerably shorter but no less demanding than the back nine, which has three par-3s and two par-5s in its 3,160-yard layout, again playing to a par of 35.

Four of the more testing holes can be found over the closing stretch, which makes Knowle perfectly set up for matchplay golf and the final three holes in particular offer a very strong finish. If you are standing on the tee of the spectacular closing par-5 18th with a game still in the balance you know there is still work to be done. This sweeping downhill 571-yard masterpiece can yield anything from eagle to bogey or worse and makes for a thrilling finale to any round.

Take the Course Tour

I

not necessarily the correct club selection from the tee. Once on the fairway be sure to take an extra club to allow for the sharp climb to the green.

Hole 1, 329 yards, par 4 (pictured) The fairway stretches uphill to a raised green and makes for a relatively difficult opening. The green is very narrow from front to back and a par 4 will be an excellent start to your round. As with many holes at Knowle, the challenge here is based on accuracy and distance control, rather than power hitting. Pro Tip: Unless you can hit a draw, a driver is

Hole 2, 473 yards, par 5 A par 5 but still a formidable challenge as this hole usually plays into the wind. Out of bounds runs all of the way down the right-hand side and a bunker at 100 yards out will catch an errant lay-up shot. Once you make it to the green, the undulations will ensure that you still have plenty to think about. Pro Tip: Play this as a genuine par 5, be sensible from the tee, lay up with the second shot and a par should be achievable.

f you have never played Knowle before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Rob Hayward, our PGA Professional.

Hole 3, 355 yards, par 4 A daunting tee shot across a sharp dogleg from left to right. Cut off as much of the corner as you dare, the braver you are from the tee the easier the second shot becomes. But beware, out of bounds on the right will mean that a slice is punished. Pro Tip: Commit to the tee shot and play for the left side of the fairway. The green tends to feed the ball from right to left so allow for this with your approach shot.

KNOWLE Golf Club 15

Hole 4, 385 yards, par 4 A generous fairway leads to a steep climb to the raised green. At the top, however, you are rewarded with a fine view. Again, as with the most of the early holes at Knowle, a par 4 will be well earned. Pro Tip: Make sure you take plenty of club to get up the hill!

Hole 5, 315 yards, par 4 (pictured) A realistic birdie chance awaits on this charming par 4 but do not take liberties, a collection of bunkers add teeth to this short par 4. Pro Tip: Not a driver here, just leave it in the fairway for an easy 2nd shot.

Hole 6, 189 yards, par 3 Club selection is crucial at this fine par 3. Misjudge the change in elevation or the breeze and you could be struggling to make a par. A great-looking hole and certainly a highlight of the round. Pro Tip: If you can, aim to land the ball just to the left or just short of the green and the contours will do the rest.

16 KNOWLE Golf Club

Continued... Hole 7, 320 yards, par 4 A great risk/reward hole. Longer hitters can attempt to cut the corner, but a fairway wood followed by a short iron is usually the most sensible strategy. Avoiding the fairway bunkers is the key to success at this fun short par 4. Pro Tip: If your round has started well, then perhaps be cautious. If you are struggling, why not be aggressive and look to pick up a shot?

Hole 8, 147 yards, par 3 (pictured) Stroke index 18 but do not be fooled! The two-tiered sloping green can be both friend or foe to the tee shot. The variety of pin positions can mean that this hole ranges from a birdie chance, to the hardest par 3 on the course. Pro Tip: If the pin is located on the bottom tier, use the slope behind as a back stop. If pin is on the top tier take care! The putt is likely to be very fast if you are above the cup.

Hole 9, 374 yards, par 4 The front nine concludes with this strong par 4 that requires an accurate tee shot that should set up a good birdie opportunity. Pro Tip: The flag pole by the clubhouse is the ideal line off this tee as the anything hit down the left side will be blocked out by the large oak tree.

KNOWLE Golf Club 17

Hole 10, 128 yards, par 3 A gentle start to the back nine with an uphill par 3 in full view of the clubhouse, as with the 8th, the contours of the green can assist a wellstruck short iron. Pro Tip: You will feel like hundreds of eyes are upon you as you tee off in front of the clubhouse patio. Pick the right club and give them something to applaud!

Hole 11, 397 yards, par 4 Open your shoulders here as the fairway is generously wide. The green is where you need to be on guard, however, a severe slope from right to left makes this a tricky two putt. Pro Tip: The green is lightning-fast, you have been warned!

Hole 12, 152 yards, par 3 (pictured) A good birdie chance providing you avoid the deep greenside bunkers. The green slopes gently from right to left and will assist a drawn mid to short iron. Pro Tip: Favour the righthand side of the green, do not be afraid of going slightly long, most of the trouble is at the front of the green.

18 KNOWLE Golf Club

Continued... Hole 13, 500 yards, par 5 The second of Knowle’s three par 5s favours a tee shot to the left half of the fairway followed by a second shot that needs to be threaded through the cleverly placed bunkers. Do this and a birdie 4 could give you a much-needed boost as you face the daunting 14th. Pro Tip: Enjoy giving it a rip off the tee as you have not much to lose by being aggressive here. If it does not come off, you can always lay up and hopefully make a birdie the hard way.

Hole 14, 421 yards, par 4 (pictured) Stroke index 1 at Knowle and standing on the tee it’s not difficult to see why. Out of bounds left, large trees to the right and a stream which meanders across the fairway all add up to what is a formidable challenge. Pro Tip: If the ground is firm, be wary of running out of fairway on the right. The best strategy is usually to be cautious with the tee shot and accept a longer shot to the green. Bring your A Game to this hole, it has wrecked many a promising score.

Hole 15, 178 yards, par 3 The last of the five par 3s runs parallel to the 14th and the stream catches anything short or mis-hit. A strong hole that often plays into the wind making shot selection difficult. Pro Tip: As with many of the par 3s at Knowle, all of the danger is at the front of the green so bear this in mind when selecting which club to use.

KNOWLE Golf Club 19

Hole 16, 408 yards, par 4 Knowle’s famed finishing stretch begins with this long par 4 that doglegs to the left. Carefully placed bunkers impinge on the landing area of the tee shot so favour the left side of the fairway. The approach to the green is guarded by a bunker on either side making this an excellent par 4. Pro Tip: Not much I can offer I am afraid as nothing but good straight shots will do here! When you do get to the green, be sure to take your time when reading the putt as there are many undulations.

Hole 17, 405 yards, par 4 A beautiful par 4 with a stunning vista from the tee. This is another hole that requires two strong shots to the green. Avoid the ditches from the tee and take an extra club with the second shot and a par 4 should be attainable. Pro Tip: Be positive from the tee here as the fairway is generously wide. The steps are a great line to pick for the second shot, irrespective of where the flag is.

Hole 18, 571 yards, par 5 (pictured) Arguably the finest finishing hole in the area. Much drama has been witnessed here over the years. A classic par 5 that sweeps majestically down the hill to the clubhouse. Longer hitters can risk attempting to hit the green in two; the shrewd tactician may decide to lay up. Either way this hole provides an exhilarating conclusion to the round. Pro Tip: Do not be tempted to hit a wood for your second shot unless you are close enough to get home in two. The approach shot will feed in from right to left.

Practice Facilities

K

nowle Golf Club is committed to offering its members all the facilities possible to enable members the chance to become as proficient at this great game of golf as their talent and application allows. As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our professional team, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths.

The membership at Knowle have a large practice field behind the 14th hole to work on their long game. At 350 yards in length there is the opportunity to hit any club in the bag right up to driver. The area has flags for focused practice and feedback and, importantly, players can hit off natural turf, which gives far more accurate feedback than artificial surfaces on how an individual is really striking the ball. The all-important short game is not neglected, either, with a range of facilities available for those wishing to work on the side of the game which can really lower your handicap in a hurry.

There is a nice large putting green straight outside the Pro Shop and not far from there can be found a chipping area with practice bunker and a chipping green. For those arriving at the course who only have a few minutes before their tee-time, there are two practice nets, which are perfect for getting loose before taking to the course.

A fantastic course, well administered competitions and a convivial atmosphere are just some of the compelling reasons to join us. We currently have membership opportunities in all categories. We actively encourage new members to the club and ensure that they’re made welcome on joining. When you have joined we’ll make sure you get the most out of your membership with us.

The cost of playing pay & play golf is rising and it makes so much sense to join a club. Play as much as you like, when you like. Play 9 holes, play 27 holes. Play social golf, enter a full range of competitions and matches. Whatever you want from your golf, you’re sure to find it here at Knowle. There are seven-day and five-day memberships available in all categories. We have always looked after our younger golfers and generous discounts are offered to juniors, to students and to those up to the age of 30 to ease the transition from junior membership into becoming a full member of the club.

If golf isn’t your thing, but you enjoy having a good time in good company, then we offer a social membership too. For an informal chat and to perhaps arrange an introduction or visit, please give Ryan a call on 0117 9770660 or email office@knowlegolfclub.co.uk.

Playing Categories

M

embers at Knowle enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other and at home and away against other clubs. Whatever the fixture, matches are always keenly contested but played in a friendly and amicable manner

Men The men run medal competitions on Saturdays and play for a number of trophies across the golfing season, both for single players and pairs, some of which date back more than 100 years. One of the most prized pieces of silverware is the Lucas Cup, a singles knockout matchplay event limited to those with handicaps of 14 and below which is played throughout the year, culminating in a final held in September. Then there is the Scratch Cup another matchplay

event open to male members and junior boys whose handicap is in single figures. The Club Championship is a 36-hole competition which takes place on a single day in June. As one of the founder-members of the Gloucestershire Golf Union, Knowle has a rich and illustrious pedigree when it comes to success in team competitions. The Club has enjoyed unrivalled success in the Bristol and District League and enters three teams, each of which is picked on merit.

KNOWLE Golf Club 31

While the cut and thrust of league competition can be thrilling, it is not for everyone. And for those who like their golf to be of a more social and less pressurised nature, we run a team called the Stragglers, who also enjoy matches against other local clubs. Ladies Compared to the men, the ladies section is somewhat smaller in size, but no less active and one which prides itself on its friendliness.

Again, there are a great many competitions during the year, with one of the most keenlycontested being the Ladies Club Championship, played over 36 holes over two days. The Ladies compete in the Bristol and District Alliance and play an active role in the Gloucestershire Ladies County Golf Association. The county’s ladies’ golf team very often features several lady members from Knowle.

Many of our lady golfers have received national recognition, with Hannah Barwood and Susan Shapcott both having been selected for the Curtis Cup. Another Knowle member, Shelby Smart, was the youngest ever winner of the Gloucestershire Ladies Championship, an event she has subsequently won on several other occasions. These are all ladies who have come up through the junior ranks at the club and it this ongoing commitment to junior golf which continues to pay dividends in producing the talented Knowle golfers of the future.

32 KNOWLE Golf Club

Continued... As with our men, though, it is not all about winning and filling the club’s trophy cabinet each year. There is also a great deal of social golf available with several mixed golf matches each year against the likes of Mendip and Saltford. The club itself has several popular foursomes events for members, including the Mixed Foursomes and the Family Foursomes, which is open to close family members only.

Seniors The Seniors Section is open to all male members at the club over 55. The Seniors are very active, playing more than 20 matches home and away against other clubs in the area. Generally each club fields a team of six pairs, who play fourball betterball. While it is always nice to win, these occasions are more about enjoying a good game and the social nature of the occasion.

There are several competitions held at the club which are solely for senior golfers. One of the most notable is the Gordon Brand Putter named after Knowle’s former professional who retired in 2001 after 37 years at the club. Gordon was a renowned player and coach in his own right, whose son went on to play in the Ryder Cup.

KNOWLE Golf Club 33

The Seniors Championship is another coveted trophy. It is played off scratch to find the club’s best older player, while the Seniors Cup is a nett competition which rewards those who perform best against their current handicap. As well as being welcome to enter the competitions run by the main section of the club, the Seniors also enjoy their own medals and Stablefords and also play other formats.

They are also to the fore in the daily roll-ups which are held at the club around 11.30am on weekdays. These relaxed get-togethers are very popular and are the perfect way for new members to get to know the course and some of the club’s longstanding members and as well as a quick way to meet new friends and discover new playing partners.

Juniors

K

nowle is justifiably proud of its reputation as one of the leading clubs in the region for the development of young golfers. Our junior section is more than 50 years old, having been founded in 1955. If offers a number of benefits, not least the expert guidance from our Junior Organiser David Owen. We have been awarded a High Achiever by the English Golf Union’s GolfMark Scheme which recognises junior and beginner-friendly facilities.

Knowle runs junior club nights on a Monday evening throughout the summer where a dedicated band of adults are always on hand to supervise and introduce juniors to the game of golf. There are also two sessions of junior coaching each Sunday all year round with our professional. The club has produced a wealth of talented young players, several of whom, such as Gordon Brand Jnr and Mark Sanders, have gone on to play the game for a living.

One of the most notable successes for the club at any level came courtesy of our youngsters in 2008 when Knowle became the first club to win the English Junior Champion Club Tournament twice. Knowle has one of the largest girls’ sections in the country and hosts a girls Open event called the Shannon Cup which is held annually in the May half-term holidays and attracts players from all over country. There is also a junior boys open called the Ben Cup played in the summer holidays in August every year.

Open Competitions

K

nowle Golf Club is always delighted to showcase its outstanding course and offers good golfers the opportunity to play here in a series of Open competitions which are held throughout the year.

In August every year the club hosts the Knowle Gold Medal, which is one of the most prestigious amateur events in the west of England. A competition aimed at elite golfers, it is open to players with a handicap of five or below. Famous past winners include Gordon Brand Jnr and Matthew Stanford, who went on to play in the Ryder and Walker Cups respectively. Mark Mouland and Andrew Sherborne, who both played on the European Tour, have also had their names on the trophy. The Ladies also run a couple of Opens each year, among them the University Cup and

Bristol Evening Post Scratch trophy, two events in one, which attract a large field from all over the region. Senior golfers are not overlooked, either. A Vets Open for over-65s, which is held in August, tends to be oversubscribed and the main Seniors Open is held in June, generally when the course is in optimum condition in readiness for Knowle’s own Club Championship. Full details of Open competitions, dates, entry criteria and downloadable entry forms can be found on the Club’s website, www.knowlegolfclub.co.uk

Social Activities

K

nowle rightly prides itself as being a club run for the benefit of its members and there is a spirit of togetherness that can be felt in the clubhouse just as much as out on the links.

While there is nothing the membership enjoy more than spending several hours pitting their wits against the golfing test laid before them, they also are not averse to enjoying themselves off the course as well. Knowle has always had an excellent reputation as good hosts and for its social side and the clubhouse is perfectly suited to the range of activities members enjoy throughout the year. We host many live bands, catering for all tastes in music and the nice patio area overlooking the course is just the spot for enjoying our functions held during the summer.

We run a range of competitions in the run-up to Christmas with the chance to win a turkey and associated other prizes such as drinks and hampers, while Boxing Day is a very big day at the club, when we are again at the heart of the local community. Many families come to sing carols and the children look forward to another visit from Father Christmas. It is a joyous festive event which has been going on something like 60 years and symbolises perfectly what Knowle Golf Club stands for.
