Welcome to Littlestone Golf Club Littlestone is a unique and atmospheric Championship Links Course laid out on the natural undulating links land between the famous Romney Marsh and the English Channel in the South East corner of Kent. The coastline enjoys a unique microclimate that makes it one of the driest places in Britain. The course is presented in superb condition throughout the year and temporary tees and greens are unheard of. We are recognised as being one of the top 100 courses in England; indeed a recent report by the R & A Agronomist calls the greens “magnificent” and states “they are some of the best examples of firm, true and well-paced putting greens in the UK”. Littlestone has hosted many major championships and has a long and distinguished history which dates back to 1888. The Club has welcomed many famous players over the years and was honoured to be again chosen as a Final Qualifying venue for the 2011 Open Championship. We are a traditional two-ball club although we do welcome four-ball play by visitors on Wednesdays after 9.30am and after noon on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays. All visitors are members for the day and, as such, can play from the Medal or Championship Tees, use the magnificent practice facilities and savour the relaxed, friendly ambience of the club. Come and enjoy the wonderful Littlestone experience, it is one you will never forget.

The Club One of Littlestone’s great strengths is the character of the club, the atmosphere in the clubhouse, the quality of the relationships between staff and membership. The Club has long enjoyed a strong conviviality, dating back over a century when it was a focal point for parliamentarians and barristers. Since then the membership has, like all of British sporting society, become more diverse – a quality evident in the openness of the club, the way in which people gather in the clubroom overlooking the first tee, and the extent to which members join up with each other for two-ball matches without a strong reliance upon pre-arranged tee times. In short, it’s a place where members can show up and always get a game. And here there are plenty of competitions for all classes of players. In the early days, the Bar, the Stock Exchange and Parliament were strongly represented at the Club. On one occasion the Club was in the unique position of having the Prime Minister of the day (Asquith) and the Leader of the Opposition (Balfour) as Captain and President respectively. Other members during the first half of the last century included Herbert Gladstone, Harry Colt, Philip Sassoon, Noel Coward and Gloria Minoprio (the first lady to wear trousers on a golf course). More recently, Lord (Bill) Deedes was Captain and then President of the Club. The Club is a golfer’s Club. Its members love the game and are proud of the achievements during 2009 of Chris Reynolds (English

The history of Littlestone The club constructed a links on the Littlestone site as early as 1888 and it was on this course that Harry Colt distinguished himself as a leading player in 1891. But responding to the club’s wish for a more challenging course, W. Laidlaw Purves, a Littlestone member and the architect of Royal St. Georges GC, and David Herd, Littlestone’s professional, created a new 18 holes in 1894 and the course today closely follows this. The new layout was ready for play in 1899. Further work by James Braid between 1905 and 1909 greatly improved the bunkering and playing options on many holes. In 1924 the club invited Alister Mackenzie (who was later to design Augusta National, home of the Masters) to modernise the links. Many of his recommendations caused heated controversy among the membership and his design for two of the strongest holes on the course (16th and 17th) were not put in until 1931. Work continued on the course after the Second World War with bunker improvements on holes 3, 4, 5, 11 and 12 and a change in the line of the 18th suggested by golf architect, Frank Pennink. More recently Peter Alliss and Donald Steel advised on five new back tees and some bunker modifications. These changes were incorporated into a new Blue Course which at 6,676 yards provides more than sufficient challenge for even the best golfers.

11

Take a tour of the Championship Course Hole 1, 300 yards, par 4 A straightforward opening hole and possibly your first and last chance of getting a fairly easy birdie. Take a long iron or 3 wood off the tee, to leave a full shot in over two bunkers guarding the front of the green. Long hitters: go for it if you dare! Hole 2, 407 yards, par 4 A drive down the centre will offer a view of the flag. Longer hitters beware of the ditch. The green, which slopes downward from front to back, is situated behind the dunes and will require a well-struck shot to find it. Hole 3, 398 yards, par 4 Trust the marker on a blind drive over a bank of sand dunes. Your drive will be rewarded if you can keep as tight as possible to the line of the left-hand bunkers on the dog-leg. Anything too far right makes it difficult to hit the green. Hole 4, 420 yards, par 4 Turning back towards the clubhouse and therefore often into the prevailing wind, this hole calls for a long second shot. A large slope and bunker protect the front of the green. Hole 5, 493 yards, par 5 An accurate drive to the left side of the fairway is required, and the second shot carries a series of cross bunkers. Look out for the bunker on the left if you are to hit the small green in two shots. Avoid the sand and this hole should pose no problems. 12

Hole 6, 159 yards, par 3 The first of four excellent short holes, regardless of whatever direction the wind may blow. The green is narrow, falling away to rough on the left and the pot bunker on the right gathers in a slightly cut tee shot. Miss the green and your short game will be tested to the limit. Hole 7, 541 yards, par 5 You must be straight off the tee and decide whether to take on the ditch for your second. It is reachable in three from short of the ditch. A narrow entrance to the green guarded by pot bunkers requires a solid shot. Hole 8, 382 yards, par 4 A classic links par 4. If you are to have a clear sight of the flag, you should keep your drive up to the right skirting the sand dunes. The little pot bunker to the back of the green is to be avoided. Hole 9, 212 yards, par 3 This hole requires an exceptional shot into the wind to carry the front bunker. Down wind, avoiding “going through is a problem. Four deep bunkers protect the front so take plenty of club. Hole 10, 417 yards, par 4 The tenth hole turns back into the prevailing wind. It is a par 4 where the green is not visible from the tee. The ideal line in is from the left. When playing down wind the big hitters should be careful of the pond on the right. 13

Take a tour of the Championship Course continued Hole 11, 408 yards, par 4 There is a ditch running diagonally from right to left which has to be negotiated off the tee. Go too far to the right and if you do not run out of fairway you have a long second to a blind green. Beware the pin cut on the left. Hole 12, 430 yards, par 4 Another long par 4 that presents a blind drive to a generous fairway. A satisfying long second into the prevailing wind has to be complemented by very good putting on the trickiest green on the course. Keep the drive left to open up the green. Hole 13, 409 yards, par 4 The only hole on the course with two blind shots and beware the bunkers 50 yards short of the green. One of the larger greens on the course with much scope for some difficult pin positions. Trust the marker post from the tee. Dead ground short of the green makes the second shot play longer than it looks. Hole 14, 187 yards, par 3 The green is the only place to be off the tee on this third par 3 of the round; anywhere else and you are faced with a difficult up and down for your par. A tough par, forget the pin and aim for the centre of the green. This green can be very fast.

14

Hole 15, 363 yards, par 4 A dog-leg left, the corner of which can be taken on by the longer hitter. The second shot has got to hold the middle of the green as it falls away steeply on both sides, through the back is no place to be! A tee shot between the fairway bunkers will leave a straight shot up the green. Hole 16, 469 yards, par 4 The start of a wonderful finish and the ruin of many a round. Look towards the water tower and you will see the green. You have to be beyond the right-hand driving bunker to have a chance of getting up in two. The shorter hitter needs to get their second up to the left giving a clear view of the green for the third. Arguably the toughest hole on the course. Hole 17, 182 yards, par 3 Perhaps one of the finest par 3 holes anywhere. Depending on the wind it can be any club in the bag from a driver to a 9 iron. Finding the green is a must to keep your card going. Don’t go long. Hole 18, 499 yards, par 5 Your drive must finish on the fairway on this closing hole to give you any chance of getting up or close in two. If you cannot hit the green in two keep to the left, so you do not have to come on to the green over the right hand bunker for your third.

Littlestone Warren Golf Course Situated next door to the Littlestone Championship course, “The Warren” course is protected by the same natural hazards as its neighbour. Tight links fairways, firm fast greens, testing sea breezes and some tough but fair rough to contend with when the errant tee shot arrives. Its par of 67 is well defended and any player playing under has produced some good golf in doing so. The course demands good well thought out tee shots followed by accurate and not always conventional iron play into the greens. If you wish to sample classic seaside links golf without breaking the bank, Littlestone Warren has all you would ask for. There is a separate Clubhouse, with a “19th Hole” and dining area. See the Littlestone Warren website, www.littlestonewarren.co.uk, for more details on the course and how to make bookings.

Competitive golf Littlestone is able to offer its members a great variety of competitive golf, both in club competitions and against other clubs. Many of the trophies on offer are steeped in history and some date back as far as the very early days of the club in the late 19th century. The Mayor’s Challenge Cup, which was presented to the club by L Fawell in 1898, is played for over the Easter weekend, while the Denge Medal was presented by members of the Stock Exchange back in 1890. This initially is a medal competition followed by the last 16 playing matchplay to decide the winner. The Centenary Cup may only be a comparatively new event, having only been contested since 1988, but victory in this 36-hole competition played off scratch is perhaps cherished as much as any other at the club. Littlestone enters the premier events run by the Kent Golf Union and the Kent County Ladies Golf Association. The men play in the Guilford Trophy, a knockout event somewhat similar in format to the Ryder Cup, with morning foursomes followed by singles matches in the afternoon. Both our men and women play in the prestigious Daily Mail Foursomes, a national event, while locally the ladies compete in the Pearson Trophy and the Bradley Cook, a five-a-side scratch team knockout tournament played in handicap order.

Visitors and societies Littlestone Golf Club is the perfect venue for society golf days and societies are welcome during weekdays. A suitable package can be tailored to suit the needs of most groups, whether it be 18 or 36 holes, lunch between rounds or dinner after play. Following in the footsteps of so many players who have tested themselves on our renowned links layout and tackling such an invigorating championship course is an experience that should live long in the memory. Visitors and societies are reminded that Littlestone is primarily a two-ball course, although four-balls are welcome on Wednesdays after 9.30 am and after noon on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays. If your society wishes to play in three-balls or four-balls and is unable to play when four-balls are permitted why not consider playing on Littlestone Warren, or if playing two rounds consider one on each course. For further information about society packages and an indication of the cost please contact the office either by telephone on 01797 363355 or via email: secretary@littlestonegolfclub.org.uk.

Clubhouse and restaurant Littlestone Golf Club has a spacious clubhouse which provides a warm and friendly welcome to everyone whilst maintaining the period features associated with its turn of the century design. Both the changing rooms and the dining room have been recently refurbished. Littlestone has a good reputation for traditional and imaginative catering. Soup, sandwiches and bar snacks are available in the Clubroom and hearty, healthy and delicious meals are served in the dining room. The chef will prepare anything to suit your needs ranging from a simple ploughman’s lunch to a four-course carvery including vegetarian choices. It is possible to hire out the dining room at the Club for weddings and other special occasions such as notable birthday parties or corporate events. Set alongside the English Channel and in an area of special scientific interest, it really is a spectacular spot. And because the unique microclimate here makes it one of the driest places in the UK, there is less chance of the unpredictable British weather spoiling your wedding photographs! To discuss any particular requirements for the main clubhouse or Littlestone Warren please contact our House Manager, Rebecca Cavanagh, on 01797 363355.
