We have an attractive indoor heated swimming pool suitable for all ages. The pool is 25 feet in length with a maximum depth of 1.8 metres and has Roman steps at the shallow end. Patio doors join the pool to a small but very pleasant veranda. The pool is monitored by closed circuit television for your personal safety and security. The Gym
Located within the main building, our well-equipped gym offers guests all they need to meet their normal fitness requirements. Visitors must have been on an induction training course and be familiar with the machines on offer. 18-hole Golf Course
Established in 1991 the course is a shade under 6,000 yards, plays to a par of 72 and is suitable for both the accomplished player and beginner. The challenging front nine rewards you with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, while the picturesque back nine runs through leaf parkland flanked by the silver waters of the River Fowey. Complementing the course are practice facilities that include a floodlit driving range with undercover and grass bays, putting green and a practice bunker. Indoor Golf Simulator

Course and Practice Facilities Situated in the heart of Cornwall the 18-hole golf course, which was established in 1991, is one of the most varied in the county. Designed to take full advantage of the natural features of the landscape, it combines two very distinctive areas of hillside and valley. The challenging front nine rewards you with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside, while the picturesque back nine runs through leafy parkland, flanked by the silver waters of the River Fowey. Perhaps not overly-long by today’s standards at just under 6,000 yards the par 72 lay-out offers a challenge to the accomplished player yet is also suitable for a beginner. Here the premium is put on accuracy and the ability to position your golf ball for the approach shot into the green is a huge bonus. The putting surfaces themselves are excellent and comparable to any you will find locally. Those looking to work on their game will find exceptional practice facilities. There is a floodlit driving range which features six indoor bays and two outdoor bays. The ball dispenser accepts tokens that can be bought from the Pro Shop. The short game is not overlooked, either, as next to the range there is a chipping green, practice bunker and practice putting green.

Professional and Pro Shop The Head Professional at Lostwithiel is Andy Hooper, who joined the club in September 2006 having previously been the assistant professional at Perranporth. Popular with the members, Andy is a friendly face who would be delighted to offer his expert advice when it comes to buying golf equipment. He keeps a well-stocked Professional Shop which specialises in Footjoy and Cross clothing and Ping and Sun Mountain golf bags. If is here you will also find just about everything to satisfy your everyday golfing needs from tees and balls and markers to gloves. The Pro Shop also has snacks and refreshments to help you keep mind and body focused on the task in hand as you look to lower the Lostwithiel course record. Buggies and trollies are available for hire and both can really take the strain out of a round, keeping much-needed energy in reserve for late in the round. Andy also offers a repair and re-gripping service on site which can prolong the life of favourite clubs and the Pro Shop is also the place to buy tokens for balls for the driving range.

Our PGA-qualified professional Andy Hooper is on hand to provide expert tuition whenever you need it. Andy’s teaching is backed up by some outstanding practice facilities which allow you to invest time working on the new techniques he has taught you. Individual or group lessons are available, with all areas of the game covered from chipping and putting to improving accuracy off the tee, a necessity for playing well at Lostwithiel. Andy likes to take a hands-on approach to his tuition, while his golfing philosophy is based around trying to keep things as simple as possible for his pupils. Technique is important, but so too is decision-making – playing the right shot at the right time – and there is no-one better to explain this side of the game than a person who earns his living from the sport. Andy is delighted to offer on-course lessons – anywhere from four to nine holes in duration – so you can learn the thought processes behind constructing a successful round. Bad weather is no problem at Lostwithiel – we have covered bays in the driving range and failing that, book a session on the indoor golf simulator. This allows you to play a selection of famous courses from around the world and is particularly useful for giving an idea of the yardages that you hit your clubs.

We can provide Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive markers and you are most welcome to make use of our excellent practice facilities, with tokens for range balls again being available from the Pro Shop. All visitors and guests are welcome to use our clubhouse, to relax and unwind in our Sports Bar, before tucking in to traditional Cornish cuisine in the Black Prince restaurant, where our accommodating and friendly staff will take care of you. Alternatively, start the day with a hearty breakfast, followed by a challenging round on our 18-hole course. Special Early Bird and Twilight rates are available to those able to make use of the course when it is less busy at the start and the end of the day. For those visiting the area and looking for some quality golf to combine with their sightseeing, we offer a three-day pass which will save money if playing three rounds or more or an even better value five-day pass which costs less than the combined price of three rounds of golf. There are some fantastic offers available throughout the year – one such example between April and September 2011 was a Sunday tee-off time between 2pm and 4pm and a main course carvery after your round for just £25. Open Competitions The club is a proud supporter of local charities and organises several events each year to benefit good causes. The Charity Day held in April is held in aid of the charity of choice of the captain for the year and is an 18-hole stableford four-ball betterball competition. Late August sees a three-person Texas Scramble which raises funds for the local Fowey Lifeboat Station, which has been saving lives for more than 150 years. More than 100 people frequently take to the course for this lively and popular event, while the RNLI team provides welcome refreshments on the 10th and organises a raffle which is always very well supported. One of the most poignant days in the club calendar is the Phil Smith Memorial Trophy Open, which usually takes place on a Saturday in July. This event is organised in memory of one of our members, Corporal Phil Smith, of 42 Commando RM who tragically lost his life on duty in 2008. Phil’s mother Julie has donated a trophy in his memory and proceeds from the day goes to the Help the Heroes Fund. The competition itself is an 18-hole better-ball competition for men’s, ladies’ or mixed pairs. The Glynn Valley Open is another eagerly-anticipated annual event held on a Sunday towards the end of July or beginning of August. It features a four-person Texas Scramble medal competition which regularly attracts up to 100 players. Open competitions take place for men towards the start of the season and for women towards the end, which both attract players from all over Cornwall. There is also a Mixed Open event held in May.

Playing Categories Lostwithiel is able to offer its members an array of competitive golf opportunities, both on a casual and friendly basis with fellow club members and in the more pressured but equally enjoyable amphitheatre of matches against other clubs. While playing well and winning are the aim rest assured, whatever the opponent, the competition is always played in the good spirit for which golf has become synonymous and once tools are downed friendships are struck or rekindled over a relaxing pint or a sit-down meal. The men’s section is the strongest group at the club. They play in the Plymouth Area League, a season-long weekly competition, starting in May and finishing in September which features five other clubs from East Cornwall: China Fleet, Lanhydrock, Looe, Trethorne and Whitsands. The winners of the group take on the winners of a comparable group contested by clubs from Devon in an end-of-season finale. There are 10 players in each team with handicaps up to 24 but no more than five players may have a handicap of between scratch and 5, which means many more players are eligible to represent their club in such a prestigious competition. The matches are played in a four-ball better-ball format. The men also play in the Cornwall Team Championships, the county’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup which features teams of nine with four matches of foursomes followed by nine singles matches.

Lostwithiel are proud participants in competitions organised by the Cornwall Golf Union and also participate in the Frank Wills Salver, a ten-man foursomes team event for players with a handicap no lower than 12 and its equivalent for players of handicaps between 13 and 20 called the Cornish Bowl. The ladies are a smaller but equally friendly group who guarantee a warm welcome to prospective new members. Ladies Day is Tuesday for medals and stablefords, and there are many cups and trophies to compete for, both individually and in pairs, both ladies and mixed. One of the most sought-after trophies is the club championship which takes place over 36 holes on a Saturday and Sunday, generally at the beginning of September. The ladies play friendly matches against other clubs and these fixtures are true to their name, as they are a fine social occasion with the after-match camaraderie as eagerly anticipated as the golf itself. There are also matches against three other clubs in a mini-league organised by the Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association. The Senior section are a very friendly bunch, playing on Monday and Thursday mornings, with visitors welcome too. They play around 14 matches home and away, as well as running some very successful charity and open days.

Lostwithiel and its History Lostwithiel is a small town in the heart of Cornwall which is steeped in history and alive with cultural activities. The town has several large parks and local shops and is well known for its antique shops. It is a popular tourist destination with good transport links, including a mainline railway station and bus stop. Lostwithiel, known as the capital of Cornwall in the 13th century, was once a busy and thriving port where tin was brought to be weighed before it was stamped, taxed and exported. Furthermore, from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century, Lostwithiel had a leather tanning industry. A souvenir to Lostwithiel’s history is Restormel Castle, the substantial ruins of which you can visit today. The Earl of Cornwall, Richard, who was the second son of King John and brother to Henry III, acquired the castle in 1265. The first Duke of Cornwall, Edward, the ‘Black Prince’, who our Hotel restaurant is named after, made several visits to the castle, which he ruled. Shortly after the English Civil War, the castle was abandoned, having been in action just the once, when a 16,000-strong Parliamentary army camped in and around Lostwithiel, was besieged and driven out by a Royalist force. Lostwithiel is the ideal tourist destination, close to many picturesque Cornish villages such as Looe and Mevagissey, and very near to Fowey, which hosts the famous Daphne du Maurier Festival every year. We are also located just 15 minutes away from the world famous Eden Project, as well as many other beautiful and interesting gardens. .

Dinner Parties and Functions Our Black Prince restaurant and function suite, with its oak timbers and lovely views, offers as warm and friendly an atmosphere as you will find anywhere and is perfect for that special occasion. Lostwithiel’s central location makes us very accessible to guests from Plymouth to Truro and our hotel with its 27 en-suite bedrooms can offer overnight accommodation for anyone travelling from afar. Staying with us also dispenses with the need for a designated driver. Our popular in-house disco can be booked for your celebration, normally up to midnight, though of course you are welcome to arrange your own entertainment such as a live band or comedian. Swimming Tuition Breaks Swimming is one of the best sports for fitness there is, an enjoyable pastime and one that potentially could save your life, or those of others. Many people learn to swim as children, taught by their school or parents, and have an invaluable skill for life. Many others, though, for one reason or another, do not. As each year goes by, it becomes increasingly difficult for adults to take the plunge, whether it is for self-conscious reasons or simply pressure of time. We can put all that right within a week here at Lostwithiel thanks to our Swimming Tuition Breaks with Helen, our fully-qualified ASA swimming instructor The main aim of your tuition is to enable you to swim 10 metres on either your front or back and to be able to regain a standing position after your swim. We are confident that you will receive an ASA 10m adult certificate at the end of your stay. Our special offer enables you to combine a relaxing holiday in the heart of Cornwall with intensive swimming lessons during the duration of your stay. You may take full advantage of our on-site leisure facilities or sample a delicious three-course evening meal in our restaurant. Obviously everybody’s requirements are different and for that reason we would be happy to adapt your tuition to suit your needs. his special package includes a four-night stay on a bed and breakfast basis. Fishing at Lostwithiel The Lostwithiel Hotel, Golf & Country Club is lucky to have some of the finest fishing facilities close to hand open to the public and available to guests staying at the hotel. We have two wellstocked lakes set in attractive surroundings at the centre of our golf course. Fairway Lake is a large two-acre lake which is well stocked with Common, Mirror, and Crucian Carp; Roach small to large and good-sized eels to 5lbs. Most fish found there will be between three and 12lbs, but there are some unidentified large fish - estimated over 18lbs – that been there for years but have so far eluded all attempts to land them! There are around 12 fishing points, safely away from golfers. Swan Lake, which is stocked with Crucian Carp, Roach and Rudd, is a smaller lake that makes a good change for regular fishermen. Occasional intruders arrive into the lake from the River Fowey via a connecting leat, and become marooned there. Both trout and salmon have been caught within the lake; however, the Environment Agency request that such catches are returned to the river where practical. From November to March, we offer hotel guests booked for dinner, bed and breakfast complimentary fishing passes and also to those guests staying between Sunday and Thursday nights during April to October. Lostwithiel Golf & Country Club is located just off the A390 on the outskirts of Lostwithiel. We are located on the Liskeard (north east) side, just pick up the brown tourist signs from Lostwithiel. For satellite navigation purposes, our postcode is PL22 0HQ. Directions
From “England�, take the M5 to Exeter and then the A30 for around 65 miles, leaving at the Bodmin/Lostwithiel exit (95 per cent of this road is now dual carriageway). Take the road into Bodmin and from there follow the signs to Lostwithiel until you reach a T-junction with A390. Turn left towards Liskeard, drive through Lostwithiel, and as you leave the town, spot the brown signpost to the left. For those with a sense of adventure, there is a scenic route. Exit the A30 as above, but take the first left (follow National Trust Lanhydroc brown signs most of the way). Turn left at T-junction and go straight over a roundabout crossing over A30. After 400 yards turn right and follow this road before taking a left turn into a small road signposted Respryn. Go straight past the rear of Lanhydrock House; cross the ancient bridge over the Fowey River and take the next right signposted Lostwithiel. Go along the lane some way and turn right at the cross roads signposted Duchy Nursery. Follow this road and will find the course first, then our entrance. By train
There are direct trains from London Paddington to Bodmin Parkway, which is around five miles or a 12-minute taxi ride away, with some also stopping at Lostwithiel. Virgin Cross Country also run trains from Birmingham and Bristol to Bodmin Parkway. From the station you can ring free for a taxi.
