Welcome Maylands Golf Club offers an outstanding golf course together with a superb venue for fine dining, weddings and parties, business seminars and conferences all within easy reach of central London. Our 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course, located near Romford in Essex, was designed by the world famous golf course architect Harry Colt in 1936. The undulating tree-lined fairways require a carefully positioned shot from the tee to help with the approach to the green, as many are protected by cleverly placed bunkers. For those dedicated golfers looking to take their game to the next level, Maylands has a large practice field, 18-hole four-tier putting green and a chipping green with two practice bunkers. Our popular PGA Head Professional, Darren Parker, is also on hand provide expert tuition when required. Maylands provides the perfect setting for weddings and has become a popular choice. The main hall of our 200-year-old clubhouse has a wealth of charm and character, with a fully licensed bar, open fire and outdoor seating area with views across the championship golf course. We are proud to hold a civil wedding licence and are able to take care of your day from start to finish. If you have any questions or would like to come and experience any of what Maylands has to offer please call me or one of my team.

History Maylands is famous in its own right as a fine golfing location, and will always be considered as such because it is linked with the name of Harry Colt, one of the foremost golf course architects of his time. Either alone or in partnership with Charles Alison, John Morrison, and Dr Alister MacKenzie, Colt had a hand in designing more than 300 courses and we are honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as the Eden Course at St Andrews, Royal Portrush in Ireland, Pine Valley and Augusta – the home of the Masters – in the United States. The land on which the golf course sits, however, had an intriguing history even before the first shout of “Fore!” was heard in this corner of Essex. According to the Friends of Dagnam Park, there are records of Maylands dating as far back as the 13th century. It was called Mellonde in 1420 and Maylonds 1524. It was in the 20th century, however, when it became more widely known, as Edward Hillman - an entrepreneur who had already set up a successful bus company – sited a grass airstrip at Maylands with the aim of developing his own budget air passenger service. Hillman’s Airways Ltd, was one of Britain’s first independent airlines and ran its first service on April 1, 1932, from Maylands to nearby Clacton-on-Sea. International flights would later follow to Paris, and there were frequent air shows in the skies above where we now stand. Sadly, Hillman would die aged 45 in 1934. The following year his airline merged with Railway Air Services and United Airways to form the forerunner of what is now British Airways, while Maylands became a golf course shortly afterwards.

The Course Maylands boasts an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course that was designed in 1936 by Harry Colt, the world famous golf course architect responsible for such classics as Wentworth, Sunningdale and Royal Portrush The course is far from short, playing some 6,361 yards off the back tees, but the premium here is on accuracy, with a necessity to hit the undulating tree-lined fairways or pay the penalty of not being able to go for the green with your second shot. That said, Maylands has more than its fair share of risk and reward holes which entice the confident golfer to take out his driver and go for the green in the hope of a putt for eagle. Two loops of nine holes from the clubhouse allows for the perfect start and finish to your round. The front nine has a par of just 34, and features two of the four short holes, while the inward half includes all three of the par-5s. A feature of the course is how well protected the greens are by bunkers, so be meticulous over your club selection or be prepared to show your prowess with the sand wedge. Having reached the putting surface, you will find the greens are true and will reward those adept with the flat stick. The championship course has been host to the PGA EuroPro Tour on several occasions and it is easy to see why professionals and amateurs find it such an enjoyable challenge that they keep coming back.

Our Professional The PGA Head Professional at Maylands is Darren Parker, who has held his current position since 2003 but who has an association with the club dating back much longer than that. Darren is an immensely popular figure at the club, having come through the junior ranks here. Having played professionally he is an inspiration to our youngsters who may have ambitions of making a career out of this great game and he invests a tremendous amount of time and effort in passing on what he has learnt to our younger members. Darren spent 11 years on the Challenge Tour and twice reached the second stage of the European Tour’s qualifying school in 2001 and 2002, narrowly failing to earn a place on the tour proper. His competitive career highlight without doubt is winning the PGA Assistants’ Championship held at Bearwood Lakes in Berkshire in 1999. The PGA’s longest-running event, dating back to 1930, is one of the hardest to win - players are only eligible to compete in the championship during their three years of training and previous winners include such illustrious names as Dai Rees (1935 and ‘36), Peter Alliss (1952), Neil Coles (1956) and Tony Jacklin (1965). To draw on Darren’s wealth of experience, book a lesson by calling 01708 346466.

Tuition Maylands PGA Head Professional Darren Parker is on hand to offer expert tuition to individuals and groups of all abilities and ages. Whichever area of the game you are looking to improve, Darren is confident he can help lower your scores whatever your handicap. Lessons vary from 30 minutes on the practice field, chipping green (including bunker play) or the four-tier putting green to a nine-hole playing lesson on the championship course. It is said the best way to learn is visually, so why not book a lesson on the C-Swing Video Analysis System where you can review every step of your swing, making it easier to identify faults and find the most efficient way to correct them. The success of our junior golfers is a good indicator of how much time we invest in our younger players and we can help them discover a passion for a wonderful outdoor pursuit that can last a lifetime. Group lessons are also available on request. If you are looking for the perfect birthday, anniversary or Christmas present why not treat your loved one to a lesson voucher? A happy golfer on the course will be a happy golfer at home too! For more information please contact the Pro Shop on 01708 346466.

Practice facilities One of the often-overlooked criteria in choosing a golf club to belong to is the standard of its practice facilities. While the course is obviously of paramount importance, the game of golf is a never-ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence and the only way to improve is by spending time working on the areas of our game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations. Without the appropriate facilities there is no incentive to get better, but at Maylands members have no such excuse because we have one of the best practice areas anywhere in the county of Essex. There is an immense practice ground stretching to some 300 yards in length which enables golfers to work on any club from wedge right through to driver. A spectacular four-tier putting green enables members to cut down the number of times they use the most popular club in the bag, while a separate chipping green allows for further work on the short game and two practice bunkers can help take the fear factor out of escaping from a greenside trap. If you simply just want to get loose and ensure your swing is in working order before heading for the course, there are also two practice nets.

Maylands Junior Academy Maylands Junior Academy is fast becoming recognised as one of the country’s leading lights in teaching the fundamentals of the game to young people and recently achieved the prestigious ‘Golf Mark’ award. In recent times we have enjoyed unrivalled success, winning a host of competitions which has seen us crowned Essex, South East and English champions, as well as reaching the final of the Four Nations Trophy. These great achievements were due in no small part to the hard work and dedication of the members of the junior academy together with their instructors. Although still possessing a strong team much of the success was generated by our older juniors, two of whom have moved up to the senior golf level and started their PGA qualifications in 2011. The structure of the juniors starts from the Golf Passport coached by PGA Head Professional, Darren Parker, himself a testament to the success of our youth program. Darren has been connected with Maylands for more than two decades since his junior golf days and now imparts the knowledge he picked up playing professionally. Maylands have introduced a new structure for junior members to allow beginners the use of the practice facilities and the opportunity to participate in the Golf Passport with our new Academy membership. Young golfers then graduate to a Junior membership up to the age of 18 and then Cadet Membership. All are offered at preferential rates, as is our new student membership for those in full-time education. Maylands’ commitment to youth is absolute, as underlined by our Golf Mark accreditation. To enquire on becoming a junior member at Maylands please contact Steve Salmon on 01708 341777.
