endip Spring Golf & Country Club is situated in beautiful Somerset countryside just outside Congresbury and within easy reach of Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and Bath.

T
he Brinsea Course is a demanding par 71 built upon prime pastureland, supporting a wide variety of flora and fauna. In addition, new habitats have been provided by the formation of 11 acres of interlinked lakes and streams plus extensive tree planting which supplements the existing copses and hedgerows.
The Brinsea is not overly tight, there are some holes where you can open your shoulders off the tee and not be too harshly penalised if you go off line. It is, however, a question of choosing sensible times to take out your driver, with water prominent and out of bounds commonplace as well.
The course is long, testing and fraught with danger. One of its main features is the amount of water, which comes into play throughout the course in the form of lakes or rhynes. The lakes’ rushes, lilies and plant life are established so the feel is natural.
Play on the 18-hole Brinsea Course is carefully controlled by a starting time procedure which avoids congestion and frustration common on too many courses at peak times.
The course plays 6,412 yards from the white championship tees, 6,239 from the yellow tees, both to a par of 71. While the par for the ladies is a more forgiving 75, this is no less a test with a yardage of 5,843 from the red markers.

The course is ideal for the beginner or novice player who perhaps lacks the basic skills or confidence to tackle our championship course.
T
he nine hole Lakeside course boasts seven par-4s with yardage ranging from 265yds to the longest ninth which measures 308yds. The remaining two par -3 holes the second across water and fifth through an orchard. The result is an interesting and intriguing layout which plays to a total yardage of 2,329 yards. The course is maintained to a very high standard with lakes and an orchard among the hazards to negotiate. It is also perfect for the dedicated golfer who wants to work on perfecting their short game aware that working on this area of the game is the quickest way for most players to lower their handicap. The Lakeside can be played twice for those wishing to enjoy a full 18 holes and is also a pleasant venue for societies perhaps seeking a 27-hole package and in search of a little light relief after the challenge of playing the Brinsea Course.

visit to Mendip Spring Golf & Country Club is something to savour. We promise you will be in for a treat and to ensure you enjoy your round to the fullest, take a moment to read our course guide, to ensure you score well and avoid the pitfalls which lie in wait for the unwary.
Hole 5 (Knights Edge) 410 yards, par 4 A tough par 4, with out of bounds down the left, so aim your tee-shot down the right. The green is long and thin, so take note of the flag position and check your yardage before selecting a club for your approach.
Hole 1 (Honeyhall) 303 yards, par 4
Hole 6 (Steeple Chase) 167 yards, par 3
A driveable green for those who feel confident standing on the first tee, but taking an iron is probably the safer shot. Aiming for the telegraph pole in the distance with a hint of fade is the ideal line.
Club selection is key on this short par 3, with out of bounds left and long. The ditch you see in front of the green should not come in to play as long as you strike your tee-shot straight and true.
Hole 2 (Little Park) 176 yards, par 3 Take plenty of club to make sure and concentrate on making good contact so that you clear the water in front of the green. Aim a little right, because the prevailing wind tends to be from the right and there is trouble left.
Hole 3 (Ham Hill) 341 yards, par 4 Another short par 4 where the best line is down the left side of the fairway off the tee to leave a much easier shot into the green. Beware not going too far left or you could be flirting with the out of bounds.
Hole 4 (Great Lodgings) 392 yards, par 4 The right side of the green is guarded by more water, so again you should aim your tee shot down the left to open up a better angle from which to attack the putting surface. The green is one of the more sloping on the course, so make sure to take care with club selection for your second shot.
Hole 7 (Herons Nest) 564 yards, par 5 A fairly long and challenging par 5 with water all the way down the left and also coming into play down the right. Note a ditch runs across the fairway, so check your yardage books and the wind direction. The bigger hitters, certainly, should think twice about hitting driver and this is one long hole where you should forget trying to reach the green in two and instead position your second to the optimum yardage to get close to the flag with your third on this tricky two-tiered green.
Hole 8 (Beavers Breach) 167 yards, par 3 One of the more testing short holes, with water bisecting the fairway and then running to the left of the green. The wind is predominantly off the right, which pushes the ball towards the water, so if you have a fade in your armoury now is the time to hit it.

Hole 9 (Halfway Hams) 407 yards, par 4
Hole 12 (Fortess) 501 yards, par 5
It’s a blind shot from the tee, but don’t be scared to open your shoulders as there is a lot more room than you think. Aim for the extreme right edge of the fairway as the hole dog-legs round to the right and this will reduce your yardage to the green for the second shot.
A dog-leg left, but with water all the way down the left-hand side. It’s reachable in two, but again the margin for error is not great for those wishing to take the risk. The right side of the fairway gives a better line for what can be a blind second shot.
Hole 10 (Great Oak) 406 yards, par 4 This is where your golfing prowess starts to be really tested, it’s Mendip Spring’s answer to Amen Corner! A long, tough par 4 with a tree in the middle of the fairway. The tiger line is to the left of the tree to leave a shorter shot to the green, but that is quite tight to the ditch that runs all the way down the left. The safer option is to the right, but that leaves a longer shot in to the green.
Hole 11 (Kinheil) 455 yards, par 4 Stroke Index 1 for good reason. With out of bounds down the right and water everywhere, the smart move is to make the most of the shot or shots you will likely get and play it as a par five. A perfect drive will leave a chance of reaching the green, but better to take the trouble out of play and try to make a four with an accurate wedge and a single putt.
Hole 13 (Embankment) 585 yards, par 5 Another long par five with out of bounds down the left. One of the keys to this dog-leg right is missing the fairway bunker on the right side. There are trees on the corner as well, so best to aim slightly left to avoid getting blocked out. Even if you navigate past several bunkers in front of the green there is still work to do. At 38 yards long and with three tiers, this green sees more than its share of three-putts.
Hole 14 (Brinsea Back) 192 yards, par 3 Another short hole over water, but trust your yardage and your club selection and instead concentrate on hitting straight to avoid the two greedy bunkers guarding either side of the green.

Hole 15 (Willow Corner) 303 yards, par 4
Hole 17 (Homeground) 373 yards, par 4
This short par 4 is the ultimate risk-reward hole. The green can certainly be reached from the tee if the wind conditions are favourable, but it involves cutting off the corner of the right-to-left dog-leg which also involves a carry over a stretch which is out of bounds. For those leading in matchplay or looking to protect a good score, the better bet is a mid-iron to the corner and a wedge to the green.
Not a massively lengthy hole, but still plenty to be wary off with out of bounds down the right and trees down the left. There are two tiers to the green, so check the flag position before hitting the approach to the undulating green.
Hole 16 (Mendip Reach) 543 yards, par 5 The third and final par 5 on the inward nine. There is out of bounds all the way down the right but this should really only worry the very wayward, or when you are lining up your shot to the green as it then gets quite tight. A semi-blind tee-shot, aim for the big house off the tee and trust your swing, then aim your second to the left side of the fairway to offer a better angle of attack to the green.
Hole 18 (Goughs Grin) 127 yards, par 3 The finishing hole is only a short par three, but is decidedly trickier than its stroke index of 17 might suggest, with water at the front and a horseshoe-shaped bunker all the way around the back to catch out those who deliberately overclub. Generally this hole plays straight downwind as well, making things even more difficult. Having safely negotiated the last with a par, it’s time to head off for a well-deserved drink in the 19th!

It is ideal for beginners and for those more experienced golfers looking to work on their yardage control.
As well as the highly-regarded tuition on offer from our professional team, there are several areas where players can work on ingraining new swing thoughts or turning previously weaker areas of the game into strengths. We have a purpose-built 15-bay driving range, which is under cover and also floodlit, enabling practice to continue whatever the weather and in the early evening for those wishing to pop down straight from work. The facility, just a 200-yard walk from the Pro Shop, is open to members of the public.

endip Spring offers a range of membership options aimed at making it as easy as possible to become a part of our popular club.
For those eager to enjoy the membership benefits of belonging to Mendip Spring but are perhaps unable to play as often as they like due to other commitments, we offer a Registered Membership. For a modest annual fee, this offers attractive discounts for play on both the Brinsea and Lakeside courses. Memberships are also available at reduced rates to juniors under 18 and full-time students under 22 years and adults under 30 and over 80. For those non-golfers who wish to enjoy the off-course experience at Mendip Spring we also offer a Social Membership.

Our five-day and seven-day memberships allow unlimited use of the course and its facilities. There is a joining fee, but this may be spread over ten years and becoming a member still represents outstanding value for money.You will find that you play more being a member of a club and it also enables you to take part in club competitions and to obtain an official handicap. During the summer months there are teams competing in the county knockouts, as well in league competition.
Men You will find that Mendip Spring is a very friendly club, and we encourage new golfers to participate in our competitions which are played at weekends and midweek. We also have a number of knockout competitions which are a great way to meet other club members. During the summer months there are teams competing in the county knockouts, as well in league competition. We enter teams in the Bristol & District League, and the Avalon League, which features play against other local clubs and affords the opportunity to play on some of the other outstanding courses across the region. We also have some friendly matches throughout the year played against local clubs as well as several mixed matches and competitions.
For those who don’t want to play competitive golf there’s ample time to enjoy playing socially in some of the best scenery anywhere in Britain. The condition of the course is second to none. Seniors This is a thriving section for the over-55s who enjoy playing in weekly competitions at the club. There are also a number of informal roll-ups throughout the week and the atmosphere is very relaxed, with the emphasis on enjoying the game of golf and meeting new friends. Many members of the section play in the various seniors’ open competitions arranged by other clubs in the region.

Ladies Mendip Spring has a very friendly Ladies Section that meets every week for competition and social golf and ladies of all handicaps are welcome to play our beautiful course. There are a host of trophies to play for within the club itself and as well as enjoying friendly fixtures, our ladies also enter a team in the Bristol and District Lady Golfers Alliance which features seven players per side playing singles matchplay. Though there is a desire to represent your club to the best of one’s ability, fixtures are always played in a friendly atmosphere and refreshments are enjoyed after the day’s golf is concluded. Over the years the club has also hosted numerous county events and our female members have been successful in county and national competitions.

We take great care of our youngsters, who we hope will become full members of the club and represent Mendip Spring with honour and distinction in the future.

endip Spring has its own junior section featuring players of all ages, abilities and levels of experience and backed by the support of its own dedicated junior organiser. We take great care of our youngsters, who we hope will become full members of the club and represent Mendip Spring with honour and distinction in the future. Junior tuition is a regular Saturday morning feature and open lessons take place between 9.30 and 10.30. Our professional team also run holiday lessons for members and non-members. For junior members we run a regular club night, which takes place once a month on a Thursday with fun competitions. Generally this begins with a practice session working on specific areas of the game, followed by some food before the group then take to the course for a bit of friendly competition such as a Texas scramble or a team format.
These nights help promote club togetherness and they seem to be working, because Mendip Spring is a recent winner of the Somerset Junior League and plays in the Premiership division of that keenly-contested competition. Once the youngsters have a handicap of 28 they can play in all the men’s competitions and there are several competitions run just for juniors during the school holidays. We have been awarded the GolfMark accreditation which means all our adults are vetted (CRB checked) and adhere to a code of conduct to make sure our juniors are properly looked after at the golf club.

throughout the day.You are always welcome in the clubhouse to enjoy a social drink or friendly meal. We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard of smart casual dress at all times. Blue denim is not permitted and correct golf shoes must always be worn on the course. Handicap certificates are preferred and we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

The season starts with a Ladies Open at the end of May, which heralds the start of a week of Open events at the club.
M
endip Spring has quickly established itself as one of the area’s outstanding golfing destinations. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent championship golf course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The formats of the competitions can vary slightly from year to year, but generally we like to host at least five events.
The season starts with a Ladies Open at the end of May, which heralds the start of a week of Open events at the club. There are fourball betterball competitions for men, ladies and mixed teams, while veteran golfers from across the region get the chance to enjoy our course in the Seniors Open which tends to be held in the middle of June. All these events conclude with a prize-giving at the end of the day and details of dates, how to enter and entry forms can be found on the club’s website, www.mendipspringgolfclub.com.

endip Spring is located 12 miles south of Bristol and within easy reach of Bath, Weston-superMare, Cardiff, Taunton and Bristol Airport.
Access is from the A370 to the north from the A38 to the south and from junction 21 of the M5 Motorway. For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BS49 5JT. Directions From the M5 Leave the motorway at Junction 21, taking the A370 to Congresbury. Upon reaching the village, turn right into the High Street (B3133) and after a mile turn right on to Brinsea Batch before taking the first right on to Honeyhall Lane. From Bristol Take the A370 Weston-super-Mare road for around 13 miles to Congresbury before turning left onto the B3133 and following signs to the club. Alternatively, take the A38 past Bristol Airport for around 13 miles before briefly turning north on to the A368 just after Lower Langford and then turning right into Church Lane and following the signs to the club.
From the South Either take the M5 and follow the directions above, or take the A38. Just before Lower Langford turn left on to the A368 and then right into Church Lane, following the signs to Congresbury and the club. Public transport The nearest station is Yatton, which is around four miles or a ten-minute taxi-ride away. Regular services run from Yatton to Bristol which has mainline stations with connecting services to the South-West, Wales and east towards London.
