For those looking to lower their scores and improve their game, tuition is available seven days a week from our talented team of three teaching professionals. We are proud of our reputation as a friendly and welcoming club and visiting golfers can expect a warm welcome in our spacious and recently refurbished clubhouse, where a well-stocked bar and first class home-cooked food provide a perfect accompaniment to your round of golf. CLUB HISTORY

M

uswell Hill Golf Club was formed on December 1, 1893, following a meeting held at the Green Man Hotel in Muswell Hill by a group of enthusiastic Scotsmen keen on playing the game in England’s capital city. About 100 acres was leased from the Alexandra Palace company, land that had originally been set aside for residential development. An 18-hole course was laid out by Peter Fearnie, who was paid the princely sum of £1 5s for his labour! The club’s first president was Sir Ralph Littler, a well-known local judge and barrister. Sir Ralph was a formidable man who did not suffer fools gladly. He was once mentioned in Parliament after sentencing a labourer at the Middlesex

Sessions to three years’ penal servitude and two years’ police supervision for stealing apples to the value of 1s! The club’s first Professional was a Mr. J.Tickle and the first captain Mr George Carrie. Our first clubhouse was a rather more modest affair than the fine surroundings in which we find ourselves today – it comprised two rooms in the neighbouring Tottenham Wood Farmhouse. It is not known definitely who came up with the original course design, but we do know that the renowned golf course architect, James Braid, was asked for his thoughts on improving the golfing experience in the early 20th century. Braid, a five-time winner of the Open Championship, readily accepted the commission and major alterations were made,

CLUB HISTORY continued particularly with the addition of a great many bunkers. More than a century or so later we are still grateful to the influence of the man who has the King’s Course and Queen’s Course at Gleneagles and the 1926 remodelling of The Open Championship venue Carnoustie Golf Links on his resume.

play challenge matches over the course and entertainer Frank Sinatra often played here while staying at the Savoy.

Braid played several exhibition matches at Muswell Hill with Harry Vardon, a six-time winner of the Open and fellow member, along with J.H. Taylor, of the trio of pre-eminent golfers of the time known as the Great Triumverate.

Situated only eight miles from St Paul’s Cathedral, it will come as no surprise to learn that covetous glances have been directed towards the prime piece of real estate on which the club sits. A land exchange took place which saw the building of a school, situated in Rhodes Avenue, on part of the club’s original grounds, with other neighbouring land being given as recompense.

sits in a corner of the primary school grounds. A Listed structure, it is the only piece of that building that still remains. The club moved to a brand new clubhouse on club land in 1932, but our history was not forgotten as this portico forms the Muswell Hill Golf Club logo. The club has survived one or two crises over the years. In the very early days a section of the membership broke away from the club to form another club, partly because Muswell Hill had been given notice to quit (a threat, thankfully, that never materialised) and partly because the church, which owned part of the land at the time, forbade golf on Sundays.

More recently, the greenkeepers’ premises and equipment were all lost in an arson attack in June 2007. Undeterred, members formed working parties to help with course maintenance until the equipment could be replaced. Muswell Hill rose like a phoenix from the ashes and, once more restored to our prime and well into our second century of existence, we look forward to continuing to preserve the golfing heritage of our forefathers for many more years to come.

staff has raised the golfing experience to new levels. The greens are renowned for their true rolling qualities and in the summer in particular are invariably in impeccable condition.

The tree-lined, undulating fairways and outstanding greens are a pleasure to play and the final stretch is probably one of the toughest finishes among golf courses in London.

So how to score well around Muswell Hill? Who better to ask than David Wilton, the club’s Head Professional. “First and foremost, it’s about putting,” David says. “Keeping possession of your ball is tricky and you’ve got to be able to putt. The greens are small, undulating and very fast. You don’t have to be a big hitter of the golf ball, but you have to be able to place your golf ball. It is a tree-lined golf course that will punish any wild shot off the tee.”

uswell Hill’s parkland course has played host to the men’s and women’s Middlesex Amateur Golf Championships in recent years and offers a fair but thorough test to players of all abilities.

The course measures 6,431 yards from the white medal tees, 6,109 yards from the visitors’ yellow tees and 5,765 yards from the ladies’ red tees. There has been substantial investment in the course in recent years and the tireless work from our dedicated greenkeeping

Come and enjoy the experience for yourself, either as a member or visitor or in one of our annual open competitions, the most prestigious of which is our Scratch Open, a 36-hole medal event held in August.

KEY HOLES

E

ach round at Muswell Hill throws up a different challenge. The closing stretch is notoriously difficult and is something to relish or face with a little trepidation depending on how your round is going. All 18 holes are memorable in their own right and every member and visitor will have their own favourites. Here Head Professional David Wilton selects some of his most memorable.

MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB

KEY HOLES

Hole 1, 333 yards, par 4 A nice, opening par four. It is fairly short, but it is also quite tight. A wooded area to the right means safety off the tee is paramount. The green rolls from back to front, but don’t go long as there is trouble. Hole 2, 366 yards, par 4 The second has a small green that can catch out people in the summer, when it is particularly fast and the contours really stand out. The raised putting surface slopes away to the left and there is trouble on the right-hand side with a steep bank and out of bounds.

Hole 8, 186 yards, par 3 A well-protected green with bunkers in front and to either side. The front bunker is slightly deceiving as it is five yards short of the green and there is more room than you might think beyond it. The green is small, and very difficult to find. One of the hardest holes on the course. Hole 10, 312 yards, par 4 A short par four, but tricky. It’s probably best to hit an iron off the tee that will leave you about 100 yards to the wellprotected green. There is an oak tree to the left of the green, which slopes from left to right and is particularly fast in summer.

Hole 16, 375 yards, par 4 Having hopefully hit a good straight drive there are bunkers left and right to factor in with your second shot to the 16th green. You can’t afford to be short here, because any ball short will roll back down the hill. Hole 18, 393 yards, par 4 A tough tee shot with out of bounds all down the left. Aim down the right side of the sloping fairway and the natural contours should bring your ball back into prime position. The 18th green has a big slope from back to front and almost feels like it has two tiers. The putting surface is well protected with bunkers left and right and out of bounds beyond. A par here is a fine way to finish your round.

Over the years he has built a reputation throughout the region for delivering results that are both achievable and rewarding.

Don joined Muswell Hill in 1996, becoming a fully-qualified class ‘A’ PGA Professional in 2000. He competed on the Elite Pro Tour and the Euro Pro Tour over the next few years. T

he David Wilton Golf Academy has a team of three top-class PGA-qualified professionals who have all the experience and dedication required to help you improve and enjoy the game of golf. Our teaching facilities have been considerably improved over the past few years. Whether you are a normally talented player who needs a quick swing fix before a competition, an inconsistent player in search of a more repeatable technique or a beginner wanting to learn some sound fundamentals, we are here to help seven days a week.

| 18 |

MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB

|

We offer numerous lesson options and packages to suit you game and your budget. Any part of your golf game can be worked on and improved with sound tuition, application and practice. Technology is changing the game of golf and how it is taught and while we are always happy to use traditional hands-on teaching methods, we are also able to offer the latest in video analysis. This enables you to compare your swings alongside those of the best players and to have a visual reminder of the techniques you were working on to improve your game.

TUITION AND PRACTICE FACILITIES

There is an undercover teaching area next to the 18th green which allows pupils to hit balls under instruction from our professionals no matter what the weather. On course playing lessons are also available and our professionals are qualified on the often-overlooked psychological side of the game, an area worth exploring if your scores do not match your golfing ability. For those wishing to work on the techniques they have been taught, there a number of practice facilities on site. Smarter golfers will tell you that the quickest way for the average player to lower their handicap is by working on perfecting shots from 100 yards and in.

The club has a short game area next to the teaching shed. This consists of a chipping green, usually with three holes to aim for, which is perfect for perfecting those par-saving chip-and-runs. It is also possible to work on speciality shots around the green from a variety of different lies and there is also a good quality practice bunker. There is an excellent putting green right next to the clubhouse and if you have played at Muswell Hill before you will have come to learn how crucial a good day with the flat stick is to constructing a good score. For more details and to book a lesson, phone the Pro Shop on 0208 888 8046.

M

embers at Muswell Hill Golf Club can look forward to an active golfing calendar throughout the golfing season, both in terms of major competitions or more fun formats against fellow members, or representing the club in matches against some of the other leading clubs in the area.

Men

The beauty of the handicap system is that it allows players of differing abilities to compete on an equal footing and still enjoy a game to the full. Good golf cannot always be guaranteed, but good company is never in short supply and the setting is truly special. In short, if you like competitive or social golf, Muswell Hill is the place to be.

| 24 |

MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB

|

Whatever your ability, there is the opportunity to represent the club in team competition. While all members of the men’s section play together in most of the club’s own events, when playing externally there are various groups to ensure a good match against an opponent of similar ability. The groups, with their qualifying handicaps are: • Tigers (2.5+) • Foxes (9.5-18.5) • Sabres (6-10) • Rabbits (19+)

The men field a scratch team in a Middlesex county competition called the Rowse Trophy and also the Thornton Cup, which also features clubs from Essex and Hertfordshire. This is played in a Ryder Cup-style format, with five foursomes in the morning, an enjoyable lunch and ten singles in the afternoon.

MEMBERS GOLF

The Tigers play in the Middlesex Tigers Golf League comprising inter-club eight-a-side scratch matchplay matches over 18 holes. Clubs are drawn into four groups and the group winners progress to a knockout stage. Muswell Hill won the competition in 2012, beating West Middlesex to claim the Leslie Flack Cup. The Foxes play in the North London League against our neighbours at Hendon, Hampstead, Highgate, Finchley and North Middlesex. During the season, matches are normally played on evenings during the week on a home and away basis. Each league game consists of eight players a side playing singles matchplay. The Sabres also play league fixtures home and away against five neighbouring golf clubs in a league format: Enfield, Finchley, Hendon, Mill Hill and North Middlesex. Again teams comprise eight players, but the chosen format of play is fourball betterball. There is also a popular accompanying knockout competition called the Bullivant Bowl.

The club does not have a veterans’ section as such, but our senior golfers form part of the Rabbits, a large and lively group of higher handicappers who take to the course at every opportunity. The Rabbits enjoy numerous friendly matches throughout the season, both home and away. At the club, there are the traditional monthly medals and Stablefords and many honours board competitions to contest each year. Our bigger competitions and medals such as the Battle of Britain Trophy – a fourball betterball competition – tend to be held over two days. Golf is enjoyed whatever the season, with a Winter League always proving incredibly popular. The Two Drivers Trophy on offer to the winner is one of the premier competitions run by the club and one of those everyone wants to win.

MEMBERS GOLF continued Ladies The Ladies are a friendly, competitive and active group of lady golfers of all ages who play regularly in competitions and matches as well as mixed events. They field a side in the Middlesex Scratch League and were winners of Division Two in 2012. Success has also been enjoyed in the Middlesex Foursomes, a competition which Muswell Hill won in 2009 and 2010. The Ladies also compete in the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Middlesex against the champions from Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey.

| 28 |

MUSWELL HILL GOLF CLUB

There are numerous friendly matches throughout the year, with a business ladies section as well as weekday section, for those ladies who work during the week. There is also a full programme of competitions to enter within the club and the Ladies, like the men, enjoy their own winter league. As well as golf, the ladies make the most of the opportunities to get together socially making good use of the club’s social and catering facilities.

MEMBERS GOLF

Social Golf The chances to play golf socially at Muswell Hill are numerous, with various fun formats or fixtures. Take our traditional match between Ireland and the Rest of the World, played at the club to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, where several club members are bestowed the status of honorary Irishmen for the day! This fixture has become so popular it has led to a second similar match - Greeks v RoW – which was the brainchild of the club’s Greek captain at the time. The Sunday Swindle has been going on for several years. It is a very popular roll-up and a great way to meet new members on a Sunday morning. There is a trophy to play for during the year, but this is more about having an enjoyable time socially rather than winning and losing and there is a dinner at the end of the season.

In the summer months there is a Wednesday night roll-up which again is fabulous for members who have just joined the club and gives another opportunity to make new friends and potentially meet new playing partners. A nine-hole competition, it is followed by a drink and much jollity in the bar afterwards. The trick is not to win, but to come second, so you don’t have to buy what can be an expensive first round! Even tasks that at some clubs might be seen as something of a chore have been turned into a fun social event at Muswell Hill. Take our traditional Good Friday divoting, for example. Groups (one on each hole, two on the par-fives) spent a little time repairing the fairways and then play a Texas Scramble before adjourning to the bar. The course looks the better for it, while the members look forward to this event as much as anything in the year.

RECIPROCAL GOLF

A

n added benefit of being a member at Muswell Hill is the chance to enjoy discounted green fee rates at numerous golf courses locally, across the United Kingdom and even abroad. We enjoy reciprocal golfing arrangements with several neighbouring courses, namely Bush Hill Park, Crews Hill, Enfield, Finchley, Hendon, Mill Hill and North Middlesex, together with two golf courses in Sydney, Australia, Roseville Golf Club and Cromer Golf Club, Rondebosch Golf Club in Cape Town, South Africa, Royal Colombo Golf Club in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Mission Hills Country Club in Shenzhen, China.

In addition, Muswell Hill is a member of the Association of James Braid Courses, which has now attracted more than 200 hundred member clubs from the north of Scotland, to Ireland, Wales, all areas of England and one in New York. The list now includes many of Braid’s famous designs such as St Enodoc, Brora, Dalmahoy and Gleneagles. The advantages of being a member of the association is that the members of the clubs can play at all the other member clubs for a reduced green fee, subject to tee availability, thereby hopefully increasing the awareness of Braid’s work and the man himself. uswell Hill is keen to introduce the next generation of young golfers to the game and does everything it can to encourage players, from attractive membership rates to a dedicated junior organiser to instruction providing a sound grasp of the basics needed to enjoy the sport to the full.

designed to get youngsters passionate about a sport that makes its Olympic debut in Rio in 2016.

Regular coaching is available to junior beginners, both boys and girls, both members and prospective members who wish to see if golf is the sport for them.

The club’s junior golfers have a number of internal competitions to enter, including a Junior Club Championship held in September.

There is midweek coaching after school in the summer months and private lessons are available to those showing an aptitude for the sport. Members of our professional team are involved in coaching in local primary schools, using the popular Tri-Golf equipment

Our Pros also work closely with the Golf Foundation and the club is actively working towards achieving GolfMark accreditation, which is a highly-regarded scheme run by England Golf that recognises beginner and junior-friendly golf clubs.

The club’s youngsters also compete in the Friern League against other Middlesex clubs. We were proud to win this competition three years in a row at the start of the new Millennium and are equally thrilled that one of the club’s talented juniors, Tara Watters, progressed to become county champion on several occasions as well as finishing runner-up in the English Women’s Amateur Championship.

David Wilton, our golf professional, will assist with your competition format, organising special prizes and golf lessons, while our attentive clubhouse staff will be on hand to take care of all your hospitality needs. The club provides a course marshal for large society and corporate days. The duty marshal should be your first point of contact on arrival. He will direct your players to the locker room, issue scorecards, nearest the pin and longest drive markers and organise your teeing off. Please note that all players must have a club or society handicap to be allowed on the course. Groups tee off from the first and with members starting from the tenth there should no added pressure on your party embarking on their round.

GOLF SOCIETIES continued You can play just 18 holes, though please note before booking that we offer great rates for more than one round. It is an option well worth considering, as you can put that newlyacquired course knowledge to good use second time around! We recommend: 8-10 minutes between tee times (3 or 4 balls) 4 hours per round 5 hours between am and pm tee times (1 hour rolling lunch). 5 hours between the last pm tee time and dinner being served (all eat together)

Pull trolleys are available for hire and buggies are available to hire from the bar. It is, however, recommended that buggies are pre-booked by phone via the office beforehand. Nearest the pin and longest drive markers are available free of charge and a presentation table and microphone can be provided by prior arrangement. The society catering at Muswell Hill is exceptionally good and one of the reasons why we welcome groups back year after year.

Desserts Apple Pie Warm Fruit Crumble Sticky Toffee Pudding White & Dark Chocolate Mousse You do not, however, have to have a sit-down meal. If you would prefer an English breakfast buffet or bacon roll and coffee on arrival, 18 holes, and a light lunch to finish – or anything in between – we would be equally delighted to see you. uswell Hill Golf Club represents an excellent choice for those seeking an outstanding location in which to celebrate their special occasion. We feel we are able to offer the best in both comfort and convenience. We are situated in a pleasant and picturesque parkland setting but within easy reach of central London, with excellent road and public transport links. Weddings receptions, birthday and anniversary parties, christenings and funeral receptions can all be catered for and our dining room boasts some great views out over the golf course. No two events are the same and for that reason we prefer not to offer set packages, but rather our House Manager and

caterer meet with you to discover your specific requirements and then set about meeting and exceeding your expectations. Our chef and his team are outstanding and experienced in catering for functions and the excellence of the cuisine is matched only by the excellence of service. We can accommodate up to 110 for wedding breakfasts or slightly more for an evening buffet reception. There is also a separate smaller function room available for hire, perfect for meetings and more intimate events. With a large car park, comfortable welcoming clubhouse and our caring staff, you really cannot go wrong at Muswell Hill. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

M

uswell Hill lends itself to some spectacular golf, it is also a pretty special place to relax as well. The club offers a Social Membership at a very reasonable rate, with part of the initial membership fee being rebated in the form of credit to be used to pay for food and drink at the bar. An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. Bridge is popular at the club, we host the occasional quiz night and Christmas is celebrated with a splendid festive lunch.

Many of the keenly anticipated social occasions revolve around a game of golf as well. Our annual presentation in November, for instance, involves members meeting for Sunday lunch, going out for an enjoyable 18 holes and then returning for a sit-down meal followed by the awarding of trophies to those who have excelled in club competitions over the preceding 12 months. November is a busy month for the club as we welcome our new Captains and say farewell to those whose year in office has come to a close. Our annual divoting get-together on Good Friday has become a hugely popular event. Teams of four spend around 20 minutes repairing divots on the fairways before enjoying a Texas Scramble followed by a bite to eat.
