Welcome North Worcestershire Golf Club is a first class golfing facility in south Birmingham and a green oasis in the suburb of Northfield, providing habitat for many species of wildlife. A traditional and long-established private members’ club, we celebrated our centenary in 2007. Our gem of a parkland layout was designed by one of the foremost architects of his time, James Braid, a five-time Open champion. There is always a warm welcome for visitors, golf societies and corporate days who are guaranteed a memorable day both on the course and in our well-appointed clubhouse. Our premises, which were refurbished for our centenary, are available to hire for weddings and other special occasions.

If you are looking to join a club as a member, there are few better choices. There is a good balance between competitive golf in the form of club competitions, matches against other clubs and social golf with frequent roll-ups. Our PGA professional provides expert golf tuition for every level from beginner to advanced player and all the latest equipment can be found in the wellstocked Pro Shop at very competitive prices. North Worcestershire Golf Club is easy to get to by road and rail and offers a wonderful course and a friendly atmosphere with welcoming members and caring staff who are eager to please. So why not pay us a visit and see for yourself?

History Our club can trace its beginnings back to the time of Edward Cadbury, who in 1905 let it be known that he was prepared to allow up to 50 people to play on his private golf course (a short nine-hole design at Woodbrooke between Griffins Hill and Bournville). This offer proved so popular that Mr Cadbury changed his mind, cancelled the concession and returned the fees to all those who had paid them. A love of golf in the people of the area had nevertheless been aroused and they were not to be denied. Oliver J. Chambers, one of the leading spirits, approached Thomas Quinney as to the possibility of playing golf on Mason Leys Farm. Agreement was reached on the use of sufficient land for nine holes subject to the conditions that no hedges were to be cut, there should be no Sunday play and that no dogs should be allowed

6

on account of the grazing of sheep over the land. A meeting was held, attended by 56 people, at which it was agreed to form a golf club to be called Northfield Golf Club. At this time Northfield was in Worcestershire and when it was subsequently annexed into a suburb of Birmingham and thus into Warwickshire, the committee of the day opted to remain affiliated to Worcestershire. The Kings Norton professional, W. E. Lewis, planned the links for a nominal fee, while a local gardener laid the greens and tees. A really good nine holes were played on for a time. There were no made bunkers, the hedges being considered sufficient hazards. The fairways were cut by a horse-drawn machine and the rough had to be scythed, the members

helping in this work. Franklin Davis was elected President with T. E. Davis Hon Treasurer and Oliver J. Chambers Hon. Secretary. The first clubhouse was a shed with a grill and this was open to the elements. The only refreshment available was tea on Saturdays provided by a local confectioner. Fear not, times have changed! In 1911 the club was formed into a limited company and became North Worcestershire Golf Club, coinciding with the extending of the course to 18 holes. Advice on the new layout was sought from James Braid, then reigning Open champion. Although many improvements to the course have since been made, the general layout remains as planned by Braid and the club has, in recent years, reverted back to playing the holes exactly in the order the great man intended.

The official opening took place in 1912, with an exhibition match between Braid and Harry Vardon, who would go on to win no fewer than 11 Open titles between them. One of the most important events in club history took place the following year when members raised enough money through buying debentures for the club to buy the freehold of the land. The present clubhouse opened in 1919 and with much refurbishment and modernisation over the years is a spacious and comfortable building in which to relax after a round of golf. The club has overcome several crises at certain stages of its first 100 years, but has shown admirable resilience in the face of adversity due to the dedication and hard work of its enthusiastic membership. We have every reason to look forward to the future with optimism. www.nwgolfclub.com

7

The Course Our 18-hole course is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of the work of James Braid and one that still maintains many of his design signatures. Braid would certainly approve of the efforts of our dedicated team of greenkeeping staff, who strive to present his design in the optimum condition each and every day.

The present day layout provides a golfing examination which is significantly more challenging than the course of old. In large part this is due to the number of mature trees in evidence which, while offering a delightful backdrop to an invigorating round of golf, are best to be viewed from a distance rather than at close quarters with club in hand! The well-designed layout may only measure slightly under 6,000 yards from the medal tees but provides a good test of golf for players of all abilities, as the Standard Scratch Score of 68 against the par of 69 proves. The ladies receive an additional shot on the 3rd, playing this long and testing par 4 for the men as a par 5.

8

www.nwgolfclub.com

Everyone will have their favourite holes, but those carrying a lead into the closing stretch can never feel safe until they shake hands in front of the clubhouse. The short 17th requires nothing more than a well-struck wedge, but can yield anything from a birdie to a double-bogey five or worse, while the long closing par-4 18th is the second toughest hole on the course and requires two true strikes to get home.

The basic principles for scoring well remain unaltered from more than a century ago: straight hitting, good course management, keeping the ball in play and a fundamentally sound short game. For this reason our course has stood the test of time well and is likely to do so for many years to come, whatever further advances in golf club technology the future may bring.

The front nine is by far the longer of the two, with one par 3 and the lone par 5, the ninth. With three par-3s and a number of risk-and-reward holes on the inward half, you might think a low score was there for the taking. Think again! Many people visit us for a second time, inspired by the majestic Braid design and the thought that they might fare better second time around. www.nwgolfclub.com

Take the Course Tour We hope you enjoy your time with us at North Worcestershire Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes from our PGA Professional Richard Davies which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before.

Hole 1 (Grafton’s Plateau) 284 yards, par 4 Aim your drive up the right side to avoid the ditch down the left. Make sure you have enough club with your approach shot to clear the brook, which is only about ten yards in front of the green. Hole 2 (Braids Best) 408 yards, par 4 Requires a long straight drive up the hill. The second shot needs to hit the right side of the green as it slopes from right to left. Hole 3 (The Presidents) 437 yards, par 4 Aim your drive up the left side and let the natural contours feed the ball into the centre of the fairway as it runs down the hill. Beware the bunker at the front right of the green, so ideally look to come in from the left.

10

www.nwgolfclub.com

Hole 4 (Sand Traps) 152 yards, par 3 Nice par 3. The green is surrounded by bunkers and should you avoid the sand aim to get your ball on the same level as the flag for a birdie putt on the two-tiered green. Hole 5 (Clubhouse) 344 yards, par 4 A slight dog-leg right to left and really big hitters can go for the green. For mere mortals, however, an ideal tee shot will leave you between 100 and 130 yards into the green and an accurate approach makes birdie a possibility.

Hole 6 (Franklyn) 361 yards, par 4 A dog left to right. The perfect tee-shot is driven just left of the right-hand bunkers. The green is narrow at the front and wider at the back, so it is best to play beyond the pin for safety and avoid the bunkers at the front. Hole 7 (The Beech) 410 yards, par 4 The hardest hole on the course merits its Stroke Index of 1. The ideal position for the uphill tee shot is the right side of the fairway, this will open up the green for your second shot, generally leaving a mid to long iron into the green. Four is always a good score.

www.nwgolfclub.com

11

Take the Course Tour Hole 8 (Sherwood) 320 yards, par 4 A short hole with trees either side of the fairway and penalising rough which offers risk and reward. You can drive the green, but need to be straight, or can take two irons to be sure of not wrecking your card. Hole 9 (Masonleys) 558 yards, par 5 The only par-five on the card, a dog-leg right that requires three good shots to reach the green. Be careful to avoid the big oak tree to the left of the fairway with your second shot.

12

www.nwgolfclub.com

(continued) Hole 10 (Dingle) 396 yards, par 4 A good drive is needed up the middle of the fairway, this will leave you a semi-blind approach shot to a narrow green which slopes slightly from right to left. Hole 11 (Metcalf) 355 yards, par 4 A short par 4, with a slight dog-leg left. The ideal tee shot will leave around 100 to 130 yards to the pin. There is a big bunker on the left of the green and an oak tree overhangs on the right, so accuracy with your approach is vital.

Hole 12 (Chambers) 183 yards, par 3 Uphill short hole, with bunkers left and right of the green. Choosing the right club can sometimes prove to be a problem, as it is not always easy to gauge the wind swirling around the trees. Hole 13 (Woodbrook) 402 yards, par 4 An intimidating tee-shot for the less than confident golfer, with the ball having to be threaded through a funnel of trees and over a pond, while also avoiding the bunker on the right side of the fairway. Beware the ditch in front of the green and the two sand traps with your approach shot.

Hole 14 (Birkett) 281 yards, par 4 A classic short hole, this par 4 is drivable and can bring big rewards if the big dip in the fairway is avoided with your tee shot. Hole 15 (Lickey View) 224 yards, par 3 A very tough short hole, don’t pick this one for your nearest the pin competitions if you want a prizewinner! Uphill and invariably into the prevailing wind, only a very good tee shot will hit the green. Par is a good score here.

Take the Course Tour Hole 16 (Austin Rise) 319 yards, par 4 A slight dog-leg left. Hit your drive over the hill and ideally to the left side of the fairway, leaving a short approach shot. Stay out of trouble and this hole offers a real chance to make birdie.

(continued) Hole 17 (Sandpits) 106 yards, par 3 A very short short hole of under 100 yards from the yellow tees, but don’t drop your guard as there is a huge crater in front of the green that must be avoided at all costs. The green slopes severely from back right to front left. Easy birdies or big scores are both possible on this hole! Hole 18 (Cadbury) 410 yards, par 4 A fabulous finishing hole which is a slight dog-leg left to right. An ideal tee shot will leave around 150 to 170 yards into the green. The second shot is uphill and can often play more than the yardage suggests.

Members’ Golf North Worcestershire offers a full programme of competitive golf throughout the year, both in the form of matches against other clubs and in our own competitions. A full calendar runs between April and October with a competition every Saturday for male members. Female members have competitions running over slightly longer periods, theirs taking place every Sunday. Honours board competitions are held almost weekly during the golfing season. One of the most keenly contested is the club championship played over two days in July, with the top 16 from the Saturday medal advancing to compete for the silverware on the following day.

North Worcestershire enters a team in the West Midlands League, offering the chance to represent the club against others in the area. Our seniors, known as the EGGS (Elderly Gentlemen’s Golfing Society), play numerous friendly fixtures throughout the season. Social golf is hugely popular here with roll-ups taking place most Mondays and Wednesdays and at weekends when there is no competition. Anybody that wants to can turn up and play and with a variety of formats and playing partners being drawn, it represents an excellent introduction to the club for new members. The male members also organise several trips away each year, including long weekends and an annual holiday to Scotland in the summer for a week’s golf.

Juniors North Worcestershire has a keen junior section and there are membership opportunities available for younger players eager to take up the game having seen it on television or for those wishing to expand on skills they already possess. The club is proud to have achieved GolfMark accreditation, which is a highly-regarded scheme run by England Golf that recognises beginner and junior-friendly golf clubs and gives parents reassurance in knowing that their child can learn the game in a safe, structured and fun environment.

The club also has close ties with the Worcestershire Golf Partnership. Junior improvement programmes can be created to suit the needs and aspirations of each individual and there are also beginner classes aimed at teaching children the basics to enable them to get out and enjoy the game as quickly as possible. Learning sound fundamentals at an early age means many years of frustration on the course later in life can be avoided! As your child progresses and grows in confidence, individual lessons can be booked. Competitive golf is offered both in club competitions and against other clubs in the form of matches in the West Midlands Junior Golf League. Please call 0121 475 1047 if you require more details about becoming a junior member.

Information for Visitors North Worcestershire welcomes visitors on Monday to Friday throughout the year. We are confident that the quality of our challenging course and the catering available in the clubhouse before and after your round will lead to a most enjoyable time. Visitors are treated like members for the day and can enjoy the full range of facilities offered by the club, including tuition from the professional and use of our practice facilities. All we ask in return is for visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we do request that visitors abide by our dress code both on the course and in the clubhouse.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. Reduced rates are available to guests of members, holders of the Worcestershire County Card and to members of other clubs who are part of the Association of James Braid Courses. A special day rate is available during the summer months for those looking to make their trip to North Worcestershire truly memorable. Please telephone the Pro Shop on 0121 475 5721 to check tee-time availability and to ensure your visit does not clash with club competitions or society bookings. www.nwgolfclub.com

Golf Societies We regard golf societies as something of a speciality of ours here at North Worcestershire and can guarantee a good time for visiting groups both out on the course and in the clubhouse. If great golf, good food and accommodating hosts are your ingredients for a successful golf day, then you have come to the right place. Flexibility is the key to the success of our society days and the reason why many groups come back year after year. Yes we can offer set packages if it makes life easier for society organisers, but our view is that it is your golf day, not ours. So come to us with a wishlist for your perfect day and we will do everything we can to tick all the boxes.

28

www.nwgolfclub.com

Your day will be tailored just for you and can comprise 18, 27 or 36 holes with reserved tee-times to suit your travel requirements. The course is a true test, but unlike some of the modern layouts, not so long that if favours only the big hitters. All areas of your golf game are examined in equal measure and we have some lovely par threes for nearest the pin competitions. However the round pans out and whether you are amongst the prizes or not, a warm welcome awaits in the clubhouse. Relax and unwind and relive your day with a drink in the lounge bar before adjourning to the private dining room where the banter can begin in earnest.

The catering is held in high regard by our members and we can keep you fed and watered throughout the day, whether you want a bacon roll or full English breakfast to get you on your way, a light lunch or a three-course sit-down meal. Our society menu and booking form is available to download from our website, but this should only be seen as a guide and a starting point. We will look to work within your budget, fulfil your requirements and deliver a golf day that meets or hopefully exceeds your expectations.

If you are looking for something to make that day even more memorable, why not consider booking a group golfing clinic before your round or ask our PGA-qualified professional about video analysis. There are only a limited number of society opportunities,so book early to avoid disappointment. For more details, call 0121 475 1047 or e-mail secretary@nwgolfclub.com

Buggies (please pre-book to avoid disappointment) and trolleys are available for hire from the Pro Shop, which stocks a comprehensive range of equipment as well as being able to arrange golf lessons and prizes. www.nwgolfclub.com

Open Competitions North Worcestershire is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to our founding in 1907. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. These events provide the chance to test your golfing ability in either an individual or team environment and feature a variety of formats such as medals, Stablefords or greensomes. Everyone is well catered for, none more so than the older golfer, with our Seniors section normally hosting up to four events during the season. www.nwgolfclub.com

Social Activities Here at North Worcestershire we like to consider ourselves a very friendly club and we really feel there is nowhere better to enjoy not only your golf, but everything else that a well-rounded golf club has to offer.

these gatherings often serve a dual purpose in helping raise money for good causes in the form of the captain’s chosen charity for the year.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment.

One of the most eagerly anticipated nights in the social calendar is the club’s annual presentation evening, generally held at the end of the golfing year in November. Here members pay tribute to the players who have excelled in club competitions over the season.

The club tries to put on at least one social occasion a month, enabling members to get together and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere inside our comfortable and homely clubhouse.

Mother’s Day lunches and events leading up to Christmas are also a traditional part of club life, as is seeing in the New Year with friends and family in the clubhouse.

Events hosted have included race nights, beer and skittles nights, comedy nights and even karaoke. As well as being a cracking evening’s entertainment

Members can keep up to date with what is going on at the club via our Facebook page, www. facebook.com/TheNorthWorcestershireGolfClub www.nwgolfclub.com
