Do you need a dentist who cares about your smile?
a BDA Good Practice
We are a small, friendly, private dental practice, offering exceptional care in a relaxed environment. Our aim is to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
The team receiving BDA good practice award
Hilary was very nervous but was interested in improving the appearance of her front teeth. We helped her overcome her dental anxiety and transform her smile. Using a combination of techniques that are non-invasive, including the Wand (an alternative method that does not look or feel like an injection) and instant Edelweiss veneers, we created an improved shape and youthful vitality, easily in only one appointment.
To discuss your individual needs please contact us:

Before
We offer all aspects of professional, modern dental care, including the prevention and treatment of tooth and gum disease, smile makeovers and cosmetic procedures.
“These veneers were non-invasive and the work was completed in 1 day, which was important to me, being a very nervous patient. The result was beyond all my expectations and is totally natural looking. Whilst I was not particularly unhappy with my teeth in the first place, the transformation has been quite amazing and I can’t stop smiling. Thank you Matthew and your team, you’re the best.” - Hilary

Welcome to Pike Hills Golf Club Pike Hills has developed into one of the finest parkland courses in the North. Situated just off the A64, the club is approximately two miles south west of the historic city of York. Our delightful 18-hole parkland course, with tree-lined fairways, is built around Askham Bog, an area which has been designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). As you make the short walk from the 6th green to the 7th tee you will suddenly find yourself immersed in a little wilderness - the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Askham Bog Nature Reserve. It is not uncommon to see deer roaming across the course with many squirrels, rabbits and a variety of birds - Mother Nature at her best! The course itself is a delight to play and while it is never anything other than fair, it promises a testing game for golfers of all abilities. We are a favourite destination for visitors and golfing societies, who find the combination of great golf, comfortable clubhouse, wonderful food and friendly membership one which brings them back time and time again. Our Professional team led by Ian Tailby can offer help and advice as well as improving your game with their excellent golf instruction and the club’s superb practice facilities, which include a driving range. Visitors and members always receive a warm welcome at Pike Hills and you will leave after an enjoyable visit with long-lasting memories of a great day out.

History On 13th January 2003 the Royal and Ancient Golf Club agreed that the club now playing golf at Pike Hills had a continuous history that would allow it to celebrate its 100th anniversary on 26th July 2004. During this time the club has had three different courses, on the Knavesmire, on Hob Moor and latterly since 1946 at Pike Hills. The club also had two earlier names, the Knavesmire Golf Club and the Railway Institute Golf Club. However, the club can trace its inception to an earlier event in September 1890 when the York Golf Club was founded, only the third in Yorkshire after Cleveland in 1887 and Beverley in 1889. The original club owes its origin to a railwayman, George Stegmann Gibb, an Aberdonian who moved to York in 1882 as solicitor to the North Eastern Railway before becoming General Manager in 1891. He was the first captain and the driving force behind the formation of Knavesmire Golf Club. A 12-hole course, soon to be reduced to nine holes, was laid out and it with further revisions it became possible, by making two circuits of the course, to play 18 holes. Improvements, though, were offset by the long grass and the presence of livestock on the course. Something better was desired and eyes were turned to Strensall Common, six miles outside York, where sufficient land for an 18-hole course was leased from the military authorities. The new course was officially opened on 9th June 1904. But not everybody was happy with this move. Led by J. Edmund Jones, a solicitor, a breakaway faction of 48 members, 41 gentlemen and seven ladies, decided that, despite the problems of the Knavesmire course they preferred that to the journey by bicycle or train and foot to Strensall. There was talk of adopting Knavesmire as a Municipal Course, but war put paid to that and the Royal Flying Corps using the course as an airfield effectively marked the end of the game there.
6
The Knavesmire Golf Club continued to exist in name only, its minute book silent, until 23rd April 1920 when it was agreed to agreed to hand over the balance of funds to the newlyformed Railway Institute Golf Club. Between 1920 and 1946, Hob Moor was used as a golf course belonging to the North Eastern Railway Institute. There were nine holes initially over the central area of the ancient common. Tom Russell was appointed professional and green keeper and was employed by the club until October 1937. A selection of his woods complete with hickory shafts and persimmon heads and irons with steel shafts and forged heads are on display in the clubhouse. The club started to thrive, with a new clubhouse being built and additional land acquired. By 1934 there were 15 holes, the first three holes being replayed to make a full round of 18. The development of the Club was not always smooth, particularly regarding damage to the course caused by livestock and children playing cricket on the greens. War came again. Part of the course had to be turned over to grazing and a request for additional space to increase the course to 18 holes was turned down. The Club decided to start looking for new premises and after the war moved to a new site at Pike Hills in 1946. Some of the turf from the greens was taken by locals for their gardens and the bunkers were levelled by the Corporation in preparation for football pitches to be marked out. Agreement was reached on a lease on land at Askham Bog. Work started on the new course in early June 1946 and by September of that year most of the fairways and greens were in position and it was possible for the more venturesome members to complete a 10-hole circuit. The new course was named Pike Hills Golf Course, following the previous practice of using an established local name for the area, but the club retained its old title of the Railway Institute Golf Club. Some of the clubhouse buildings had been brought from Hob Moor and with portable buildings added as well this sprawling arrangement was far from ideal.

History As their condition deteriorated it was clear something better would be needed. The first part of a new brick-built clubhouse was opened on 7th December 1968. It had a spacious bar lounge, tearoom and kitchen on the first floor with locker rooms and toilet facilities below. Further major improvements and extensions were to be added in 1982 and 1992 to provide members and visitors with the comfortable, spacious building they find today. Having completed the new clubhouse the next step was to increase the course to a full 18 holes. This was achieved without any new land being acquired. Two new holes, the 15th and 16th, were constructed where the practice ground now is. With no limitations put on the influx of new members from the Railway Institute, membership grew to 900, causing problems of course congestion. Finally, it was agreed new members would only be welcomed as vacancies arose. Further improvements to the course were to see the introduction of three new holes in 1991 which resulted in the excellent layout we see today. When you come to Pike Hills for the first time you will spot things both inside and out which underline that we are a little out of the ordinary. At the top of the stairs can be found a magnificent stained glass window. It was designed and painted by a local glass painter Sep Waugh and in December 1982 was presented and mounted to the club by former member Norman Allen, a stained glass technician, who sadly passed away in February 2012. Outside, your eye will instantly be drawn to the Old Railway Turret Clock. Originally manufactured by Potts of Leeds in 1899, the clock was an amalgamation of parts. The movement from Ilkley station was restored by club member Graham Oliver and mounted at the top of the stairs outside the lounge door and connected to the faces by a long rod across the full width of the building. The faces of the clock came from Keighley railway station and the supporting brackets from Shipley railway station.

The Course Pike Hills is one of the North’s hidden gems and one of the friendliest places to come and enjoy your golf. It is a parkland course surrounding Askham Bog - owned and preserved by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. The combination of the golf course and the natural surroundings offers all golfers a chance to play in a glorious natural setting and be close to Mother Nature. Once you have teed off the challenge of the course is set! A couple of ponds come into play and you are never far away from a dyke which runs from Askham Bog. Treelined fairways, bunkers strategically placed and immaculate but tricky greens make Pike Hills a great test of golf for all. The 18 holes offer you a combination of holes that will live long in the memory testing par 5s, picturesque par 3s, risk-and-reward par 4s and the most challenging of par 4s. The course measures 6,212 yards from the white tees and 5,811 yards from the yellow tees, playing to a par of 71 with an SSS of 70. The ladies get two additional shots, with the difficult par 4s on holes 12 and 16 being turned into par 5s. Even so, at 5,623 yards off the red tees, this still offers a fair and most enjoyable test for any level of lady golfer. Our continual investment into drainage, course development and state-of-the-art machinery provide excellent and consistent playing surfaces. A great golf course, club and membership awaits you!

Hole By Hole Guide If you have never played Pike Hills before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Ian Tailby, our PGA professional. Hole 1, 328 yards, par 4
A short but demanding par 4 to start. For position, play a 3 wood or long iron to the left centre of the fairway. This will leave a mid to short iron to a small green protected by bunkers. Two putts and you are well away.
Hole 2, 512 yards, par 5
A strong par 5 of over 500 yards requires a well-hit tee shot down the middle. A 3 or 5 wood will leave you a short iron into the green. Be careful with your putts as the tricky borrows will test the best of putters!
Hole 3, 291 yards, par 4
A great risk-and-reward par 4. The big hitters will seize the chance and probably want to take the green on. However the best play is to thread a shot down the middle avoiding trees left and the fairway bunker. A short chip onto a heavily-contoured green will leave you with a “little tester for birdie or par.
Hole 4, 337 yards, par 4
Drive to the right-hand side of this fairway. A good tee shot will leave you a mid to short iron into this challenging green. Two putts and a par here is always welcome.
13
Hole By Hole Guide Hole 5, 418 yards, par 4
Stroke Index 1, usually playing into the prevailing wind. This very strong par 4 requires a good drive down the left centre of the fairway. An accurate well-hit second will hopefully find this long and very testing green. With bunkers positioned right and left of the green a par is always agreeable.
Hole 6, 287 yards, par 4
A good risk-and-reward par 4. Drive down the middle between mature poplars on the right and the beauty of Askham Bog on the left. The green, which slopes heavily from back to front, will ask questions of your putting skills.
Hole 7, 144 yards, par 3
A most delightful of par 3s with a tee shot played to the green from within the land owned by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust - Askham Bog. Be careful to miss the bunkers surrounding the green and a birdie beckons!
Hole 8, 496 yards, par 5
The second strong par 5 on the front nine demands a well-placed tee shot toward the centre of the fairway. You then need to decide if you are going to take on the three cross-bunkers just short of the green or lay up. Once on the green a good putter will be looking to pull a shot back on the card.
Hole 9, 207 yards, par 3
A very tough par 3 usually played into the prevailing westerly wind. A long iron or fairway wood played over hawthorn trees will hopefully find the small green. Two putts and a par and you walk to the Halfway House very happy!
14
Hole 10, 459 yards, par 4 A most challenging of holes to start the back nine. This long par 4 demands an accurate tee shot driven over the out of bounds hedge to the right. A long iron or fairway wood will put you on the well-bunkered green or just short in two. You should be happy with a five and ecstatic about a par.
Hole 11, 312 yards, par 4
A beautiful hole played to a raised green with an eye-catching pond to the right. A well-placed tee shot over the brow of a hill will leave you with a mid to short iron to this great green. One of the few greens without a borrow to contend with offers a good birdie chance.
Hole 12, 405 yards, par 4
A truly demanding long par 4. Play your drive towards the far fairway bunker off the tee. The centre of the fairway will leave you a well-hit mid iron or utility club to reach this raised green, which is heavily bunkered. A four here is always good.
Hole 13, 339 yards, par 4
Placement off the tee is key to making par here. A drive to the right of the pond if you are unsure of clearing it will set up a shot to a raised green surrounded by trees. Two putts and move on.
Hole 14, 410 yards, par 4
Straight down the middle on this one! However be careful of the bunker short of the green. Strategically placed to catch the magnificent drive or the poorly-hit second it can often spoil your score. Once on the green you will encounter a testing, rolling green which does not surrender you a par without a fight.

Hole By Hole Guide Hole 15, 156 yards, par 3
A great par three which has often ruined many a good score! Play a mid iron to the right centre of the green to ensure you make par or better. Do not go left as the greenside bunker awaits.
Hole 16, 410 yards, par 4
One of the best par 4 holes for many a mile. Play a well-struck drive down to the left of the large hawthorn. This gently sweeping dog leg then offers you a tough second of anything between 150 and 200 yards. A difficult green which slopes from left to right means a two-putt is always welcome.
Hole 17, 309 yards, par 4
Drive uphill and avoid the large trees to the left of the fairway. Right centre is perfect. A short iron to a well-bunkered green will leave you with a tricky birdie attempt. As you walk back to the 18th tee take in the magnificent sight of majestic York Minster in the background. It is a view not to be missed!
Hole 18, 392 yards, par 4
A great testing finish. Play your drive just right of centre allowing for the undulating fairway to bring you back into its centre. A mid iron should give you the chance of two putts and of finishing your round in style. A hole to remember and one which will bring you back for more.

Members’ Golf Pike Hills has an active membership who enjoy a year-round programme of competition, both against other clubs in league and friendly matches and for the many club trophies on offer to members. The Club has a number of excellent players and were winners in 2010 of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs Team Championship, the first winners of this prestigious event from the York Union of Golf Clubs in 21 years. We were proud to represent the club and the county in the national finds held at Woodbridge Golf Club in Suffolk. Club stalwart and scratch team captain Russ Chilton summed up the feelings of many at the club on that triumph. He said: “It is an historic moment for everyone at Pike Hills and what makes it really special is three of that team all started at Pike Hills as 13-year-olds. We are the Manchester United of youth development. To be Yorkshire Team champions... well it does not get any better than this. Collecting this trophy is the proudest moment of my golfing career.” The men also added the Yorkshire Foursomes title in 2011 and enter a team in the Scratch League run by the York Union of Golf Clubs, along with associated competitions organised by that body for member clubs. But while there is certainly talent aplenty among our membership, it should not be thought that you have to be an exceptional golfer to enjoy your golf at Pike Hills. We are proud to be one of the members of the Yorkshire Rabbits Golf Association (YRGA), an organisation set up in 1937 to provide active and friendly inter-club competition between higher handicap players. From small beginnings, incredibly there are now 104 clubs actively participating. The YRGA is made up of six areas, with Pike Hills being one of 16 clubs who form part of the Harrogate Area. Matches are enjoyed home or away, alternating annually, against other clubs in our section. While it is always nice to win, of paramount importance is enjoying the social nature of the game, catching up with old friends and making new ones and upholding the spirit of golf.

Our Rabbits section play a number of friendly and competitive fixtures against other clubs and a number of in-house competitions. The section also organise three social dinners each year and hold an annual Open Day for visitors each July. For our senior golfers aged 55 and over there is the TOFFs section, again offering a full programme of inter-club matches and club competitions. Within the club itself there are a host of trophies and honours board competitions to be competed for on an annual basis, some of these dating back many years. The Ware Cup, for example, the club’s oldest trophy, was presented to the Knavesmire Golf Club in September 1904 and the Lycett Green Challenge Bowl in 1907. The ladies enjoy their own programme of events throughout the year with monthly medal and Stableford competitions, together with a number of honours board competitions. The oldest competition, the Coronation Cup, is a medal event which was first contested in 1953, while the one everyone wants to win above all else is the Ladies Championship Trophy, a 36-hole strokeplay competition that annually determines the club’s outstanding female player. There are more light-hearted competitions too, such as a yearly battle of the sexes between teams selected by the Lady Captain and the Club Captain. The Lady Captain usually organises an away day to another club once a year for golf and refreshment and there is a trophy on offer to the day’s best performing player. The Ladies enter teams in the A and B League competitions run by the Yorkshire County Ladies Golf Association, which sees teams of seven playing in home and away matches against other clubs in the hope of performing well enough to reach the knockout phase. All abilities are catered for, with the A League for players with handicaps of 25 or less and the B League for those with handicaps of 19 to 30.

Juniors Nothing gives us more pride at Pike Hills than seeing one of our juniors graduate from becoming a golfing novice unsure of the appeal of the game into a talented player who not only represents the club with pride but in undertaking this thrilling journey discovers a real passion for a sport so many of us love. We do everything we can to develop our youngsters and provide help and guidance, with the aim to impart the necessary knowledge and skills to allow each individual to reach their potential in a caring, friendly and safe environment. Technique is important and never overlooked, but equal value is placed on learning and understanding the rules and etiquette of the game. Pike Hills Golf Club is continually striving to improve the standard of coaching for Junior Members, with or without handicaps, and for those who attend coaching sessions. In March 2009 we were proud to have been awarded the GolfMark, which is a national scheme run by England Golf that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities. Juniors can enter adult competitions at the discretion of the Professional in addition to having their own programme of events. We split our under-18s into three groups, rookies (under-12s), Tour 2 (12 to 16) and Tour 1 (16-18). Rookies must play with adults, while Tour players are able to book tee times after 3pm in summer and 1pm in winter, though they must have a playing partner. As well as offering greatly reduced memberships for our younger players, we also offer structured instruction to help them progress. Coaching sessions take place at weekends throughout the golfing season. Saturday mornings sees sessions for more advanced juniors while the afternoon is reserved for younger juniors and beginners. Sunday morning sessions are for everyone, with children divided by age and ability.

Parties and societies can book Monday to Friday, though please note that as a busy members’ club we can only accept visitors on the following days and times: Mon-Thurs: 9:30am to noon and 1.30pm to 4pm Fri:
9:30am to noon and 1.45pm to 4pm

Social Activities The splendid course should be reason enough to become part of Pike Hills, but the club has an active social scene too. The members are renowned for their friendliness and if not trying to break par like nothing better than to spend an evening in each other’s company. The club has an active social calendar that includes popular events such as quiz nights and themed dinner evenings. We hold a traditional annual dinner dance and prize presentation in January to celebrate the club and its outstanding performers. The catering at Pike Hills is exceptionally good and if there is an opportunity to celebrate an event alongside sampling the excellent fare produced by our chef, then we jump at the chance. Weekly Sunday lunches are always well attended, and there are also lunches or evening meals to celebrate Mother’s Day and other notable dates in the calendar. The Rabbits hold a barbecue in the summer and if you didn’t think we were a progressive club, how many sporting establishments do you know who have held a Pig Racing evening? There really is something to appeal to everyone, whether it be a Hallowe’en party, comedy evening or bringing the children along to the club for Santa Sunday where our family club marks that magical time of year.
