Welcome

W

elcome to the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club. This is the most easterly and one of the oldest established yacht clubs in the United Kingdom. We are located in the heart of the seaside town of Lowestoft; our Marina could not be more centrally placed for visiting the area with its many attractions and facilities.

Since the inauguration of the RN&SYC in 1859, we have hosted regattas for different classes of yachts and dinghies ranging from tiny dinghies favoured by youngsters of today up to huge, turn-of-the-century, racing yachts. We are pleased to have played host to many Championship Weeks and Regattas and look forward to hosting many more.

Our unique Edwardian Clubhouse, a Grade II Star Listed Building, overlooks our own marina, and has outstanding sea views. The Clubhouse offers spacious bars, an excellent dining room and informal dining areas together with bedroom accommodation. We also have other rooms suitable for private meetings or small dinner parties. The Clubhouse is a prestigious venue for a special function or wedding reception.

We are proud of our year round social programme and our summer series of racing, cruising and regattas. Indeed, we offer a staggering array of both formal and informal activities throughout the year from our prestigious Summer Ball and the black-tie celebration of Trafalgar Night to less formal Club Suppers, Speaker Evenings and Quiz Nights.

www.rnsyc.net

The Club is a Royal Yachting Association Training Centre and we regularly hold courses for Club Members and their friends each year. The courses offered include Basic Navigation, Day Skipper up to the various levels of Power Boat courses. Our Training Principal can tailor most courses to suit the requirements of particular groups and individuals. There will always be a warm welcome extended to visiting yachtsmen and women, whether you arrive as part of a fleet, as part of a race from another port, as part of a regatta or if you want to visit on your own for just a few days. Our Staff will be on hand to find you a berth, direct you to the showers, ply you with food and drink and help with any repairs that you may need.

The Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club is delighted to welcome new members. We offer a number of categories of membership and are always pleased to talk to prospective members. Many of these may be established sailors but we are also happy to hear from those who have an interest in, as we say at the Club, ‘all things nautical’. Prospective members can be proposed and seconded by existing members or otherwise interviewed for membership by two members of our Management Committee. We are always interested in keeping in touch with the business world and offer a special Corporate Category of membership. We particularly welcome young people and families. The Commodore and Flag Officers look forward to welcoming you to the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club. The Commodore.

History

T

he Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club was founded in April 1859 at The Maids Head Hotel in Norwich when a number of “boating gentlemen” met to discuss the formation of a club. In its inaugural year the Club established an entry fee of two guineas and an annual subscription of one guinea and, as well as electing the first Commodore, appointed a Sailing Committee with representatives from Great Yarmouth and the Rivers Bure, Yare and Waveney. Many of the sailing fixtures initially organised by that Sailing Committee and which took place at Wroxham and Oulton Broad, remain largely unchanged to this day.

6

www.rnsyc.net

The Club’s first burgee was a white triangular flag with a blue border bearing the red cross of St George. In 1867, when the Prince of Wales became patron of the Club, the burgee became a white flag with blue Prince of Wales feathers. In 1869 members thought that a red background with white feathers looked better and this style of burgee has remained ever since. The Club’s first ensign was white with a red St. George’s cross on the fly but infringements meant the Club was forced to change it to a defaced red ensign with the Prince of Wales feathers on the fly. In 1898, when the Club was granted its Royal Warrant, the Prince of Wales feathers were surmounted with a crown; the ensign that remains today.

At a meeting in June 1884 it was decided that a clubhouse was required. Land was leased from the Great Eastern Railway and a single storey building, designed by Edward Boardman was built in 1886. The Clubhouse quickly proved too small, however, and, following a design competition, renowned architect George Skipper’s butterfly, or ‘X’ design, was selected. Following negotiation with Lord Claud Hamilton who funded the building, the current Clubhouse was formally opened on 11th July 1903 by Lord Hamilton himself.

In 1908 King Edward VII formalised the Royal Warrant, backdating it to the original issue date of 1898 and presented the Club with his signed photograph, which hangs in the Dining Room today. The Club is honoured to have received various royal visitors since that occasion; the latest visit being from The Princess Royal to celebrate the Club’s 150th Anniversary. In 1998 a grant was secured for a marina, which has become a central feature of the Club and, in partnership with Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club, we have achieved recognition as an RYA/Volvo Centre of Excellence for sail training.

History (continued)

In 2009 the Club with great pride and honour celebrated its 150th Anniversary. A reception and supper was held at the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich, commemorating the first meeting held at the same hotel in 1859. Sir Timothy Colman, Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, took the salute at a formal sail past on Lake Lothing in June.

Interestingly, although the Club has its feet in the sea, many members still enjoy racing and sailing on the Broads. For more than 150 years, generations of Members have ensured that their Royal Club continues to preserve its tradition, whilst embracing the necessary changes through the advent of time.

Champions and Olympians

T

hroughout the history of the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club we are proud to list numerous Olympic and National Champions, putting us firmly on the map as a club built to succeed. One of our most famous champions is Chris Boardman. Racing in the 1936 Olympics in Germany, Boardman and his team failed to win any of the races in their 6-metre yacht Lalage but, as a result of a consistent performance, won the gold medal. In 1948 the first post-war Olympics were held in Great Britain. Stewart Morris, a prominent member of the Club, sailed a Swallow to win gold for Great Britain, while a previous member of the Club’s International 14 team, Charles Currey, won a silver medal in the Firefly class.

The Club began a successful period in the 1970s with Nick Truman sailing Titan, crewed by Paddy Hardiman and Peter Woods, winning the Dragon Gold Cup in 1974. Seven years later, when sailing Tertius, this team won the Edinburgh Cup and Nick became the first Englishman to win both trophies. The Star National Championships was won in 1972 by Anthony Knights. The Squib National Championships have been won by Bryan and Jenny Riley, Lloyd Crisp with Chris Pank and Jimmy Tubby with David Gale. Owen Delany and Mark Duffield have been runners up on numerous occasions. Jimmy Tubby and his crew also have won the 707 National Championships. The Club has much of which to be proud!

Racing

R

acing remains a key activity at the RN&SYC as it has done ever since our foundation in 1859. The Club has a long tradition of hosting major sailing events including class championships at regional, national and international level. The Club has a wealth of experience to bring to regatta and race championships, as well as a pool of skilled race officers and support teams on which to draw when managing these events.

For the hardy souls who enjoy racing whatever the weather or the temperature, the Club racing year starts in early May when the local Squib fleet run a series of practice races in preparation

12

www.rnsyc.net

for their National Championships. The season concludes in September with an end-of-season rally to Southwold and back for the Phil Back Trophy. The Challenge Cup, first competed for in 1860, still features on the Racing Calendar. It is open to members with qualifying keelboats and is sailed over a course, the limits of which depend on the courage of the Race Officer! The two main Club events are June Regatta, a four-race series held over two days, with boats counting their three best results to determine the overall winner, and Sea Week, held in August, with ten races over five days. Boats can compete in a morning and an afternoon series.

As with all people who enjoy outdoor pursuits, the clocks going forward in Spring provides a big morale boost to Members of the Club and the longer days mean more available daylight, which signals the beginning of our Tuesday evening racing. We can arrange to start you or to time you in if you are planning an offshore race from or to Lowestoft. When the race is over for the day, you will enjoy a warm welcome and friendly, informal atmosphere in our unique Clubhouse. Clubs from The Netherlands race to the RN&SYC at least three times a year and, after a challenging sail, our Dutch friends always enjoy the hospitality of our Club.

We also have two excellent racing areas immediately close to the Club. The South Beach, immediately adjacent to the Clubhouse, provides easy beach launching to a racing area south of the Harbour entrance, while the other race area is north of the Harbour and provides the excitement of sailing around the most easterly point in Great Britain. Launching boats in the Club’s Marina is easy with a 2 tonne capacity crane and a slipway is available. With the option of plenty of racing taking place from early summer through to midSeptember, you will see that there is truly enough to keep you happily occupied.

Cruising

U

niquely, the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club can boast not only a sheltered marina in one of the East Coast’s few deep-water all-weather harbours but also easy access to some very special inland waterways, the southern Broads.

As befits a gateway to the Broads with unrestricted access to the sea, cruising at the RN&SYC encompasses everything from pottering on the Norfolk & Suffolk rivers to exploring the coasts and waterways of Europe, tackling the Atlantic circuit or sailing around the world. Weather permitting both motor and sailing cruisers are invited to join a Shakedown Cruise at the beginning of the season and a number of cruising activities are also planned throughout the season. Longer cruises are organised in addition to being invited to cruise in company with other clubs from both the UK and Holland. We find we have much in common with yacht clubs in The Netherlands, our closest neighbours across the North Sea.

The Club’s outstanding location on the Suffolk coastline offers easy cruising along the East Coast as well as being in close proximity to Norwich, Southwold, Great Yarmouth, the Waveney Valley and Broadland. A popular day trip is to visit Scroby Sands where, observed by the seals, members enjoy a picnic and a stroll, or a game of cricket orrounders – sometimes curtailed by the incoming tide! Power or sail, there are opportunities for everyone to enjoy their own particular waterborne activity. Recently, there has been an emerging interest in RIB ownership and we have a growing fleet which enjoys social cruises, developing their boat-handling skills and assisting with competitive events.

The Marina

T

he Club’s Marina is located in Lowestoft Harbour, with our Clubhouse adjacent to the members’ and visitors’ berths. There are 60 fully-serviced pontoon berths for members with additional fully-serviced berths available for use by visiting yachts. Fresh water and mains electricity are provided on the pontoons. On shore, the Clubhouse facilities are open 24 hours a day and include showers, toilets and a laundrette allowing those who have been on the water the opportunity to freshen up or

clean their gear at whatever time they arrive. Club Staff are on hand from 08:00 to 18:00 most days to assist boat owners and dispense fuel. A crane is available to lift boats of up to two tonnes in and out of the Marina. This facility is free of charge to members and training is provided for those who wish to take advantage of it. A slipway is also available to launch and retrieve boats into and out of the Marina

Twice a year a mobile crane is hired to lift cruising boats out of and into the Marina if their owners wish to maintain them on our hard standing during the winter months. The Club has a variety of cradles on which to rest the boats while they are out of the water. The Club supports Sailability, an initiative which encourages disabled people to enjoy the thrills of sailing and, to this end, a hoist is available on the pontoons to assist them into and out of their boats.

Free Wi-Fi is available in the Marina for use by all sailors. There is also a computer terminal connected to the internet available within the Clubhouse. Members and visitors are asked to help maintain a safe, clean and pleasant environment both in the Marina and at sea, while they are also expected to show consideration to other Marina users and to treat the facilities with respect.

Visitors and Guests

T

he Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club extends a warm welcome to visiting yachtsmen, members of other yacht clubs and members’ guests. Members are allowed to bring their guests into the Club to enjoy our views, social events and cuisine. All visitors and guests are requested to sign the Visitors Book in the Club’s Reception.

More frequent visitors will be invited to become a member in their own right or, if a spouse or partner likes the thought of a secluded place to rest, dine or meet friends, the member can upgrade to Family Membership. We are a family-friendly club and children are always welcome, although regretfully, pets are not permitted in the Clubhouse.

Sailors visiting the Marina automatically become Temporary Members of the Club and are encouraged to make full use of our facilities as well as joining in with our various social, cruising and racing activities. Simply come and say hello at the bar where you will invariably find a friendly face to talk to.

Visitors, members and their guests are expected to wear at least “smart casual” dress when eating in the Dining Room. Our Staff are always happy to advise on suitable attire.

Arrangements can also be made to allow temporary membership for those staying locally for a period of time, in accordance with Club’s rules.

The sailing community is naturally a very friendly fraternity and we are confident that the reception you receive at the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club will be sincere and warm.
