Welcome
Royal Blackheath is arguably the oldest golf club in the world, having celebrated our 400th anniversary in 2008. We play for the oldest medal in golf in the spring, and host the earliest known Open competition, but our greatest tradition is of a Club that is inclusive and welcoming to all. Players of all ages – we have thriving Men’s, Ladies, Veterans’ and Juniors’ sections – enter our regular members’ competitions, scrambles, roll-ups and inter-club matches playing for a wealth of trophies, or simply for the joy of improving their game by joining in impromptu weekend roll-ups, a summer’s evening 9-hole get-together or taking part in the Club’s full social calendar based in our beautiful and historic Clubhouse, Eltham Lodge. Our fine parkland course, laid out over the Great Park of Eltham Palace, is a good test of golf for all levels of play, while our team of Professionals provides excellent group and individual tuition.
We also welcome non-members to both our course or for functions in our Clubhouse. Society and corporate golf days can be booked and casual golfers looking to pay a green fee, who ideally have a handicap, can play from Monday to Friday. Function rooms with catering are available for conference meetings, wedding receptions or private celebrations and guided tours can be arranged of the Club’s museum. We welcome membership enquiries and look forward to seeing you soon.
Club History
Royal Blackheath Golf Club is known wherever golf is played as having been instituted in 1608.
Our claim to be the world’s oldest golf club has thus remained unchallenged for over 175 years. Indeed, no less an authority than Bernard Darwin, grandson of Charles Darwin, golf correspondent of The Times for 46 years, past Captain of the Royal & Ancient and the most revered of all golf writers, began his introduction to a guide to the Club published in the 1940s with the following words: “The Royal Blackheath Golf Club, as all the world knows, is the oldest golf club in the world.” It is a claim of which we are justifiably proud.
The Club has had one change of home in 400-plus years. Having played for centuries at Blackheath, the First World War gave the final coup de grace to our existing seven-hole course there and in 1923 it was agreed to merge with Eltham Golf Club, with members then able to enjoy the current 18-hole course in the pleasant parkland surrounding Eltham Lodge. The Blackheath Ladies Club was founded in 1899, having a clubhouse at No.3 Montpelier Row and playing on a course at Barnehurst. The ladies were to have no connection with Royal Blackheath until the amalgamation with Eltham in 1923 when they joined forces with the ladies at Eltham Golf Club.
“The Royal Blackheath Golf Club, as all the world knows, is the oldest golf club in the world.”
Today, evidence of our long and fascinating history can be seen and enjoyed by visiting our Museum, on the top floor of our Clubhouse, undoubtedly the finest Club Museum in the world. It contains the most astonishing wealth of artefacts, paintings, medals and documents ever collected, including some of the first clubs, balls and scorecards. The Club Museum houses the oldest golfing medal in the world The Knuckle Club Medal, now known as the Spring Medal. It has been continuously played for since 1789 and naturally remains the club’s most prestigious annual competition.
We offer conducted visits of our Museum by arrangement (maximum 20 people per group). Please e-mail Jan Easton on jan@rbgc.com for more details. The Club celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2008. Today, Royal Blackheath finds itself prosperous and happy, with a flourishing membership across all sections. Considerable enhancements have taken place - and continue to take place - within the Clubhouse and on the course resulting, we believe, in one of the finest members’ golfing facilities in the British Isles.

Our Course
Just nine miles from Central London and only 25 minutes’ drive from City Airport, a warm welcome awaits you on your visit to our lovely parkland course with its excellent fairways and true greens. Over the years the course has been beautifully landscaped and planted with a variety of stunning trees. It’s a welcome oasis hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the busy capital. The course was originally designed by leading Professional Tom Dunn in 1892. The renowned golfer and course architect James Braid was consulted on improvements which were undertaken in 1928-29 and in 1970 further improvements were undertaken by golf course architect Frank Pennick. A defining characteristic of our course is its strength in the opening and closing holes.
Getting a good start is the key to any round, so if you can master the first four holes, then a good score could well be on the cards. However, you will need to keep focused for the final few holes. Firm but fair is often said of the finish. Under the backdrop of the Clubhouse with its lovely terrace, the driveable 18th is the perfect finish to the round. Go for it and the reward could be birdie, but beware... it can bite!

Tour the Course
If you have never played Royal Blackheath before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Matthew Johns, our PGA Head Professional. Hole 1, 463 yards, par 4
Hole 3, 411 yards, par 4
A long and tough par 4 lies in store as your opening hole of the day. Favouring the left side is preferable from the tee if you can avoid the fairway bunker and this will leave you a straight approach to a thin green that slopes devilishly from front to back. A par will feel like a birdie and a bogey is never a disaster.
Everything is there to be seen from the tee, the ideal line is to aim for the middle of the hedge that crosses the fairway. The narrow gap at the front of the green needs to be threaded with your approach shot to this large green with subtle borrows.
Hole 4, 190 yards, par 3 Hole 2, 382 yards, par 4 Whilst significantly shorter than the 1st, the second hole still provides a stern test. Drive between the two bunkers or if long enough, challenge the bunker on the right to leave yourself a shot that plays nearly a club longer than you think due to the uphill nature of the second shot. Once on the green beware the heavy slopes at the front of the most treacherous green on the course.
The longest par 3 on the course, this green is well protected with bunkers at the front on both the left and right although the bunker in front of the green is some way short of the putting surface. The green slopes from left to right and a par should always be considered a good score here.
Tour the Course
Hole 5, 360 yards, par 4
Hole 7, 369 yards, par 4
The toughest part of the 5th is the tee shot, you need to avoid the railway line and bunkers to the right and the encroaching trees from the left, perhaps favour a 3 wood rather than the driver. The green has a false front that needs to be carried but once on the putting surface the green is fairly flat and provides a good chance of a birdie.
The decision here is to fly the bunker or play short, and if electing to play short there is more fairway to the left than appears visible from the tee. The green slopes heavily from back left to front right and leaving an uphill putt is advisable or it becomes very easy to three-putt this large green.
Hole 8, 153 yards, par 3 Hole 6, 472 yards, par 5 A long straight drive between the trees either side of the fairway will afford the longer hitter a chance to reach the green in two and set up a straightforward birdie. For the shorter hitter, consider laying up short of the ditch that crosses the fairway and play this par 5 as a genuine three-shot hole. The green slopes from right to left with a tricky swale at the front left corner that can make putts in this area very awkward.
A picturesque par 3 with hazardous bunkers surrounding the green. The sensible tee shot is played with plenty of club and aimed at the gap between the front bunkers. The green slopes from back to front and has some subtle borrows although once on the surface this hole provides you with a realistic birdie opportunity.
Hole 9, 361 yards, par 4
Hole 11, 376 yards, par 4
A brave tee shot threaded between the bunkers and the mound will leave a short iron to the green and a birdie opportunity although the false front to the green needs to be negotiated or a ball can easily roll back away from the putting surface. The deep bunkers at the front of the green need to be avoided at all costs, many a scorecard has been ruined in here.
The longer hitter can carry the bunker on the left to leave a short iron approach whereas the shorter hitter needs to position their tee shot between the bunkers whilst being careful not to get blocked out by the trees on the left. The green runs away from you heavily at the front so stopping your approach shot near a front pin can be tricky.
Hole 10, 338 yards, par 4
Hole 12, 168 yards, par 3
From the right-hand tee this hole is there to be seen, however when played from the left-hand tee the semi-blind tee shot requires a bit of draw to leave you positioned in the fairway short of the pond and the willow trees. The green has a large slope at the front and when the pin is on the right, be careful not to miss to the right as a slope will carry the ball away from the surface leaving a tricky chip back up to the surface.
The challenge to this par 3 is in threading your tee shot between the tree line so that you can reach the large green that awaits. Subtle breaks on the green make this a tricky putting surface but once on a par should be within your grasp.

Tour the Course
Hole 13, 544 yards, par 5
Hole 15, 341 yards, par 4
The visual intimidation provided by the pond is only one of the challenges to this tough tee shot; you also have two bunkers which are hidden from the tee plus out of bounds to the right. Once in the fairway the second shot needs to miss the bunker some 50 yards short of the green and this hole provides a genuine birdie opportunity.
Strike your tee shot over the centre of the tree but be careful not to run too far into the ditch that is 235 yards from the tee. The approach shot needs to negotiate its way between three bunkers where you will find a green that is narrow at the front but wider to the back so taking an extra club here should help you to find the putting surface and set up a par.
Hole 14, 374 yards, par 4
Hole 16, 159 yards, par 3
A drive played either short of or past the bunker on the left will leave you with a short to mid-iron approach to this green that has two levels. The lower front half of the green is full of break and borrow, whereas the higher back section is fairly flat. This is a hole that whilst not long can catch you out and par should be considered a good score.
A large but tricky green to find due to the deep bunkers at either side plus the slopes that pull the ball away from the putting surface. Once on the green a two putt is no certainty, particularly if you are putting from beyond the hole as you will face a fast downhill putt.

General Building
All aspects of general building work are covered. We only employ genuine trades people who have the experience and qualifications to fulfil any course of building work put in front of them. It is especially hard for the public to find quality trades people specialising in their relevant trades rather than a 'jack of all trades, master of none', which seem to pollute the industry.
We believe that when we find a quality trades person, with the right attitude, we keep hold of them, because frankly they are hard to find. At Mcarry Contracts our trades people have worked for us for years and we continue to employ them. This is reciprocated because of the friendly nature of the company, they want to work for us.

Tour the Course
Hole 17, 421 yards, par 4
Hole 18, 265 yards, par 4
Probably the hardest tee shot on the course you are required to place your ball to avoid the trees to the left and the bunker and ditch to the right. Once in the fairway you need to decide whether to carry the bank or play safe and short with your second leaving yourself a partially blind pitch to the large and fairly flat putting surface.
Risk and reward time! Do you try to fly the hedge and ditch with your tee shot to setup a chip and putt birdie? Or do you play safely to the wide fairway short of the bunkers? If you favour the latter then the approach shot is tricky as it’s uphill with the clubhouse and out of bounds looming large just a few paces from the green. This hole offers a real birdie chance but if you get it wrong, it can easily result in a bogey or worse.

Members’ Golf
Members at Royal Blackheath enjoy a full programme of competitions throughout the year, both playing against each other for a host of prestigious and historic trophies and medals and at home and away against other clubs. Men
The Men’s Section enter the county’s premier knockout competitions such as the Kent Amateur Foursomes, an 18-hole inter-club knockout competition featuring two pairs from each club. The club is proud to have been, in 1925, one of the seven founder members of the Association of South Eastern Golf Clubs. This group, with northern Kent as its geographical focus, now features 16 of the area’s top clubs. Each club enters one team into each of the knock-out competitions run by the Association, with the scratch competition, known as the Perman Shield, having been contested since 1925 and featuring morning foursomes followed by afternoon singles, much along the lines of the Ryder Cup.
Over the years a number of associated events have been introduced to allow golfers of varying abilities to test their competitive mettle. There are now five competitions where participation is restricted to players not having a handicap lower than a preset limit. These individual matches are actually played on a level basis, with no concession to an individual’s handicap and which, unlike the scratch event, feature just singles matches. The specific competitions, with handicap limits, are as follows: Sundridge Park Trophy Wilding Cole Trophy West Kent Cup Royal Blackheath Trophy Gray Trophy
(handicaps 6 and over) (handicaps 9 and over) (handicaps 12 and over) (handicaps 15 and over) (handicaps 19 and over)
As might be expected of a club with as long and as prestigious a heritage as Royal Blackheath, we are able to evidence our standing in the history of this royal and ancient game with an array of trophies and medals which is widely regarded as unparalleled in the world of golf, or in the world of sports generally. The most prestigious of these is the Royal Blackheath Spring Medal. Originally known as the Gold Medal of the Knuckle Club, it is the oldest medal in the world, having been struck in 1789 and first competed for in 1792. The golfing term ‘medal’ competition derives from this artefact. The inscription reads “Quaesitum victrice manu”, which may be freely translated as “Reward of skilled victory”.
Ladies
The Ladies, too, have their own historic trophies to compete for, many of which date back more than a century. The oldest of these is the Valerie Cup, an autumn meeting scratch competition which was first contested in 1890. Not far behind in terms of age are the - Laird Medal and Black Challenge Vase (both 1895) and the Eltham Scratch Medal (1897). The county’s premier competitions are well supported, with teams entered in the Bradley Cook, a five-a-side scratch team knockout tournament, the Holland Trophy, a summer foursomes knockout, the Tappin Trophy, featuring three golfers, each from a different handicap band and the Coombe Cup for golfers over the age of 68, among others.
Members’ Golf
Then there is the Pearson Trophy, a team event played in a group format over the winter followed by a knockout phase with the eventual winners going on to represent Kent against the champions from Hertfordshire, Surrey and Middlesex. A team is also entered in The Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic, a hugely popular national event, and at weekends a ladies team plays in the Kent Business Ladies League. Juniors and new members are made to feel particularly welcome and are quickly integrated into the Club.
Seniors
The Over-60s at Royal Blackheath also enjoy league competition, playing in Group 2 of the Kent Golf Veterans League. Home and away matches take place against Cherry Lodge, Chislehurst, Langley Park, Sundridge Park and West Kent and there is also an associated home and away knockout tournament. Aimed at players with a maximum handicap of 18, the format is fourball betterball between five pairs per side. The Vets play their matches in the morning before the teams sit down for a convivial early afternoon lunch. A number of friendly fixtures are also played throughout the year, with those who do not feature for the league team being given priority, which provides an opportunity for all those who wish to represent the club to do so.
Juniors
Royal Blackheath has a thriving Junior section and we do all we can to champion our adult members of the future, with coaching available from our Professional team to enable our young golfers to build the foundations upon which to develop a solid golf game. We offer very attractive membership rates to our junior golfers, they have organised competitions and are able to use the course without limitation from Monday to Friday, subject to availability. One of the highlights of the year for the younger golfer at Royal Blackheath is our Junior Summer Camps which run throughout July and August. These three-day Camps run at the Club from 10am to 2pm, with each day split into a morning practice session learning new techniques and an afternoon session spent on the course playing games and applying new skills. All sessions are conducted by our PGA-qualified Professionals.
Places are limited to six juniors per week and we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment, so keep an eye out for the dates, which are always well publicised on our website, www. royalblackheath.com. To book or for more information, please contact the Professional Shop at Royal Blackheath on 020 8850 1763 or email ProShop@rbgc.com.
Visitors
Visitors, Guests and Societies are warmly welcomed at Royal Blackheath.
We can promise you a challenging game on our fine parkland course, which was re-modelled by James Braid, plus excellent hospitality at the 19th hole in our historic Clubhouse. During the summer visitors can enjoy a glass with fabulous views from the patio or rose garden and even dine al fresco, while in the winter months the lounge and the 19th Hole bar offer a cosy refuge to the rain and snow. Museum tours at the world’s oldest golf club are also available by arrangement to enable you to further enjoy the Club and its unique history. The course is a welcome host to numerous visiting golfers, societies and organisations throughout the year and can cater for groups of any size. To arrange to play a round as a guest, please contact the Professional Shop.
To book your Corporate or Society day, please contact Jan Easton in the office. She can assist you in tailoring the day to suit your needs. Whatever your requirements, we are sure that you will enjoy your day! Please speak to Jan Easton in the office or our head pro Matthew if you need help with this. Visitors and Guests are also welcome to use our Pro Shop. If you are looking for advice on new golfing equipment, would like a swing check or even if you’re just a beginner starting your first lessons, then why not visit Matt or Chris in our Pro Shop. Our Clubhouse
Our impressive Clubhouse has a long and colourful history. A splendid example of mid-17th century restoration architecture, originally known as Eltham Lodge, it was built in 1664 to the design of Hugh May for John Shaw, banker to King Charles II. No expense was spared in its construction, hence its inclusion in Simon Jenkins’ book, ‘England’s Thousand Best Houses’, where it is described as ‘a gem of restoration architecture’. The Clubhouse still retains its elegant staircase and much of the original ceilings, fireplaces and pictures, together with its own unique collection of golf portraits. Today’s Club features a splendid 19th hole bar as well as the mixed Lounge with stunning views overlooking the 18th green. As well as providing ideal locations for weddings and private parties, the handsomely appointed reception and dining rooms are used throughout the year by the Club for various traditional functions.
Dating back to the late 18th Century and the days of ‘The Knuckle Club’ - a gentlemen’s club within the Blackheath golfing community, dining was almost a sport in itself. It followed, that when the Club was reorganised in 1843, dining arrangements were formalised into ‘Wee Dinners’. And so the custom continues to this day, celebrated quarterly in our elegant main dining room and involving haggis, a quaich of whisky, much toasting and often a song or two. The Club’s Annual Dinner is similarly traditional and very much celebrates our Royal Scottish heritage.

Social Activities
As befitting a Club so rich in tradition as ours, being a member at Royal Blackheath opens up opportunities not only to play a magnificent course as often as you want, but also the chance to enjoy a rich and varied calendar of social events. From Summer Balls and concerts held in the grounds, to the eagerly-anticipated Annual Dinner – a fabulous black tie and dinner jacket or red jacketed event to celebrate the installation of the new Captain – it is fair to say that we do not do things by halves at Royal Blackheath! Notable dates in the calendar such as New Year’s Eve and Burns Night are also celebrated in our own beautiful and historic Clubhouse, a majestic building that plays host to numerous other events throughout the year.
Among the many other notable occasions are the “wee dinners” to celebrate the four major medals contested throughout the year and the gatherings with other kindred golf clubs with whom we have long lasting relationships, notably Royal Aberdeen, Royal Burgess, Royal Dublin and Glasgow.
