Welcome
Welcome to the Royal Southampton Yacht Club Like all Royal Yacht Clubs, Royal Southampton takes pride in its history and standards. But today’s RSYC is also one of the most dynamic and active. Extensive racing activities span everything from Sunday mornings ‘round the cans’ to jointly running the first few days of the Cowes Regatta. We recently hosted the superb J Class racing in the Solent and also fielded a team of Race Officers for the British Olympics. Additionally our Cruising group - comprising both sail and power- makes ambitious passages to distant destinations while also ensuring, through its active annual programme, that no charming rally venue or reciprocal Yacht Club in the Solent is left unexplored. And ever open to innovation, RSYC has recently instituted a Remote Controlled Yacht section which has a well supported programme of racing on Thursday evenings, plus year-round activities. But we are about a lot more than sailing - we are also a fun, friendly, highly social club, offering a great range of events. Who couldn’t enjoy a party in our glorious Clubhouse overlooking Ocean Village Marina? Is there a more perfect spot for a lazy lunch on a sunny day, or for a twilight drink, than our stunning Gins Clubhouse, on the beautifully unspoilt Beaulieu River? Many of our members do not own a boat. Some don’t even sail. Or motor. They are members because it is a lot of fun to have a club with so much to offer - though it’s interesting how many find themselves drawn onto the water eventually... www.rsyc.org.uk

Welcome
Our recently launched ‘Introductory Membership’- with no joining fee and a monthly payment option - has created a surge in membership over the last year - and our new ‘Affiliate Membership’ option is proving a popular way of enabling local businesses to use Club facilities on weekdays at a tempting offpeak rate. The Club goes back a long way, to well before 1875, which was when it was awarded its royal warrant and its magnificent premises in Southampton’s Above Bar were commissioned. Following WW2 the Club moved next door to the Hampshire County Cricket ground - but part of the proceeds from the sale of the previous site were reserved to ensure this inland base was balanced by a waterside one. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the inspired purchase of our site at Gins. And for nearly 25 years we have also been in the privileged position of having our main Clubhouse by the water too - but also convenient to the city centre. Would you like to know more about the history or any other aspect of the Club? Do have a look at our website at www.rsyc.org.uk. And make sure you check out the social programme while you’re there. You’ll be surprised how many friends you could make over the next year.....

The Clubhouses
R
SYC is unique in having two Clubhouses on the Solent, offering extensive, but very different, amenities.
The main Clubhouse at Ocean Village has all the advantages of being in a city centre location, while offering a light and charming atmosphere, with commanding views over the marina from both the terrace and the warmth of the lounge, the bar and the restaurants. We pride ourselves on keeping the facilities bright and up-to-date, having only recently completed an ambitious extension providing further facilities and a lift. Rail, ferry and bus services are all within walking distance, as are cinemas and superb shopping. Members are entitled to free parking in the Club car park. Berthing is also offered to visiting members in the ‘Pool’ - the corner of the marina adjacent to the Clubhouse. The marina’s showering and laundry facilities are also available for use by those overnighting here By contrast with this combined marina and city location Gins, our Clubhouse on the Beaulieu River, occupies a superb spot in what must be the most unspoilt corner of the New Forest, with glorious views over the river and salt marshes, which throng with wildlife. Here you are close to the historic Bucklers Hard village, and the famous Beaulieu Motor Museum. Moorings on the river are available for rent, and visiting boats can berth alongside an extensive river pontoon, or on the shore pontoon which offers power and water, for a modest fee. A daily Bosun service makes the moorings and river pontoon easily accessible. There are excellent shower facilities at the Clubhouse and also free parking for Members.
Gins Clubhouse You are assured of a warm and friendly welcome from the staff at our smaller, and more intimate, Gins Clubhouse, in the heart of the New Forest and beside the Beaulieu River. It is the jewel in the crown of our Club, and this year we celebrate its 50th anniversary. The Gins Bar, Restaurant and Terrace offer a tranquil atmosphere and superb views across the salt marshes to the Isle of Wight. Whether you visit for a Club event, a Sunday Carvery, a dinner with family or friends - or whether you choose to book the venue for a private or business function, you can be confident of a very special and satisfying experience. With its own recently extended shore pontoon, including access for disabled sailors, a river pontoon, moorings, a Bosun service and excellent showers and changing facilities, Gins is a sailors’ haven. It is also the heart of our cadet sailing training activities and our remote controlled yachting section.

Corporate and Private Events
R
oyal Southampton is a private members’ club, but facilities at both the Ocean Village Clubhouse and at Gins are available for hire for corporate and private events. Whether you are hosting a business meeting, a training day or a staff social event - or need to set up a business lunch or dinner, we have the venue for you at Ocean Village. Similarly, if you have a family or other private celebration, these venues will add a charm which few other locations could offer.
OCEAN VILLAGE Subject to availability, you can choose from the following -
Clubhouse Lounge Situated in the main part of the Club and adjacent to the Bar and Restaurant, it has panoramic views of the Marina, as does the broad wooden balcony with outdoor seating, which runs round all three sides of the lounge. This can be set up as a meeting room or as a reception venue for up to 120 guests.

Corporate and Private Events
Restaurant Able to seat up to 40 diners, and also with marina views, this can be reserved separately or with the Clubhouse lounge.
Bar The Bar itself connects with both the Restaurant and the Lounge, and additionally has its own separate lounge area with sofas which can be made available, separately or open onto the Clubhouse Lounge.
Admirals Room This large multifunctional function room, running the length of the second floor of the Clubhouse, is an ideal venue for training and presentations, being away from the main areas of the Club. Depending on layout, it can typically accommodate up to 80.
Trafalgar Room A smaller and more intimate space, adjacent to the restaurant, decorated with a nautical theme and with marina views. Ideal for meetings, private dinners or small drink receptions. These are exclusive venues, which can be fully supported by our in-house catering team. From teas and coffees, through drinks and canapes, buffet meals and even 5 course banquets, our team can put together a bespoke event to suit you and your budget. www.rsyc.org.uk

Our year begins as always with our three frostbite rallies. These rallies are always planned so that the hardier souls whose boats are still afloat can come by water but by restricting the destinations to the mainland all may attend whatever the weather. These gatherings are an excellent opportunity to discuss the summer plans for the individual yachts or for newer members to meet and join in. Could be an icebreaker in more ways than one! Marchwood YC is based in the old RN magazine on the river Test. This charming destination is easier to find on the water than by road. Warsash Sailing Club is a short trip by water or a slightly longer drive by road from Southampton but we always receive a warm welcome. The new Mary Rose museum is well worth a visit so we decided to add this in to our frostbite rallies. Dinner will be at the Hornet SC in Gosport.

The main clubhouse in Ocean Village has berths in either the club pool or the marina which means that an evening’s entertainment can become an overnight stop. We have added three supper/talks to our programme this year. Heading East towards Chichester Harbour always presents a problem with the tide calculations and one solution is start from Cowes. Our preliminary date for the Osborne House concert is July 26 that gives us an excuse to visit the Island that weekend. The Chichester Harbour cruise is intended to be a mid-week excursion in the relaxed style rather of a gentler age rather than a mile eating bash across the seas. Our Bank holiday visit to Island Harbour offers the opportunity of a final long weekend before the end of school holidays. The last two years the Ryde Sea Cadets have brought over their canoes for all to try. Add to this a BBQ and a walk to the Folly for lunch, spaces at the marina for campers and we have a winning formula we want to repeat in 2014. The Bournemouth Air Show was investigated by a number of our members this year. Anchoring off the Pier to watch the aerial display and then on to Studland Bay for the night proved to be a successful format which we wish to include in our programme. 20

When most organisations rally to other clubs they tend to be greeted by the staff and take over the facilities in isolation. We believe that there is much more to be had if we welcome the members of the host club and our reciprocal clubs to join in with our activities. What started as tri-club has now been renamed the Joint Club rallies. These begin with an early July rally to Portsmouth. This year we shall base ourselves in the Royal Clarence a former RN victualling yard; how appropriate! The Gosport ferry takes us across to Gunwharf and Sunday lunch at the RNC & RAYC in old Portsmouth. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Gins clubhouse we shall visit in mid July. This will be a joint clubs rally and an opportunity to sail the Radio Controlled model yachts. Our October date takes us to Cowes with dinner at the Royal Corinthian and berths in Cowes Yacht Haven. Known for its reputation for hospitality, the Royal Corinthian serves some of the best food and wine to be had in Cowes.

Our jaunt across the Channel to St Vaast takes advantage of the Bank Holiday to allow those with restricted time to join us for the weekend. For those with more leisure time and the desire to be in St Vaast for its Saturday market, then the option is depart earlier. For those with even more free time the “Beyond is entirely decided after the weekend, the only target is to be back at Gins for the annual Hog roast. The Hog roast is open to all, our only request is that you book at least one week before since the size of the Hog is determined by the number of diners! The Hog is usually served with its crackling and apple sauce, accompanied by a selection of salads.

Easter is a movable feast in more ways than one. We begin on Friday in East Cowes marina with our Safari supper; this is an excellent chance to make new friends or renew old acquaintances. Saturday takes us to Yarmouth and dinner at the Royal Solent Yacht Club. Waiting for the tide to carry you west gives a leisurely start to the day, or a short passage keeping inshore to cheat the tide offers a lunchtime stop off Newtown, the choice is yours. Sunday morning we carry the flood to the Royal Southampton at Gins for the carvery lunch followed by an afternoon of fun and games for the cadets. 22

Height 4.2m 4.1m 4.0m
The longer Bank Holiday weekends offer the chance for families still working to venture further afield without eating into their holiday allowance, the downside is these fixed holidays restrict the choice of tides. Going west and returning always presents problems with the tide so although the times may not suit the going they are better for the return. It has always been a favourite destination since George 3rd lost the Americas and discovered Weymouth and, with a new royal George, we really should go there. The bathing machines are long gone but the Royal Dorset YC refurbished in 2011 offers a warm welcome.
RNLI Race/Rally Date Destination 27th Sept 28th Sept

Yes it is a race, but it is also a rally, so it appears in the race listing and also in the cruisers section. You can race or cruise to the destination, the choice is yours, but the reason for going is a club dinner followed by an auction and a raffle. All of the money raised goes to the RNLI. So we have a great time whilst supporting a good cause.

Whilst most of our rallies take us to destinations with pontoons, water and power it is nice to get back to our roots and practice some of the skills of self-sufficiency that attracted us to yachting in the first place. Our biannual MOB training day is planned to take place early season so that racers and cruisers can brush up their safety skills before venturing offshore. A morning’s classroom session is followed by an afternoon on the water, probably the most valuable day in our calendar. The ISC Round the Island Race this year, because of the tides, is back to mid June so the plan is to sail down the Western Solent on Friday, anchor, and either a BBQ or visit to Keyhaven sailing club, and then watch the fleet go past early Saturday morning before moving to Lymington or Yarmouth. The Newtown event is intentionally held out of high season on a date which, having taken the ebb tide from Southampton Water, enables us to take the flood tide by dinghy to Shalfleet quay and walk the mile or so to the New Inn for dinner. We normally moor our yachts to the visitors’ buoys in Newtown Creek or anchor in Clamerkin Lake. Having regard to the time of low water on 4th Oct., many of our members will be on the moorings by early afternoon and may then take the circular walk (about an hour) from the landing stage. We should then set off in our dinghies (with torch) at about 1800hrs. giving us time to enjoy our meal before the next ebb demands our return by dinghy to our moorings where we may gather for coffee or something stronger

The Folly Rally is a highlight of the club year. Supported by all sections of the club it can be one of the biggest gatherings on our calendar. Depending on the weather the numbers can vary from 80 to 100+, but whatever the number we will be warmly welcomed by Andy and Cheryl and efficiently catered for by their friendly staff. The Club office will be closed over the Christmas period so if, after booking, you need to change your plans please use one of the contact numbers listed on your confirmation email so that we can give the Inn as accurate a number as possible.

W
e host one of the most active year-round racing programmes in the Solent and here you’ll find details of our 2014 races and events.
This year sees some major innovations to help our continuous development of RSYC racing. Fully crewed: • A joint initiative with Spinlock IRC celebrating IRC’s 30th anniversary will provide a 2014 IRC certificate for just 40 per cent of the normal cost to boats competing in the Doyle Sails Frostbite Series (January-March). • Our popular Thursday evening summer racing will follow a revised format with the Twilight and Summer Series merged into one longer Series with more discards. There’s also a new class for double-handers sailing under white sails. • There’ll be a new all ladies race on Saturday, July 5 in aid of the Commodore’s Charity Double Handed: • This year we expand from two to three Sub-Series: Inshore, Alongshore and Offshore each comprising four races but now with one discard each. There are five discards in the Main Series of 12 races. Like the Inshore Series, the new Alongshore races will be rated Category 4. • On the weekend June 28 and 29 three of the Main series races will be combined to provide the first ever UK Double Handed IRC National Championship and a Club Championship for the non-IRC boats. Off the water, you can expect our usual warm welcome at either of our two Solent clubhouses at Ocean Village, Southampton and at Gins on the River Beaulieu. Our race organisation is supported by the Club’s helpful and knowledgeable staff together with one of the strongest and most experienced volunteer race management teams to be found anywhere in the UK; including international, national and regional officials. Our 2014 Notices of Race, Sailing Instructions, supporting information, results, race reports and much more information besides will all be published on our website: Visit www.rsyc.org.uk to keep up to date with everything that’s going on at the RSYC. • All races and race events are open to members and non-members alike • A full range of year-round fully crewed and double handed events • More classes, prizes and trophies in the Double Handed Series races • A separate class for any six one-design or white sail boats in any race or series • Text / E-mail declarations for all applicable races • Hot meals to suit a range of budgets at our Clubhouses after local races. The Notice of Race, entry forms and other double handed race documents will be available from our website at www.rsyc.org.uk or by contacting the Sailing Secretary by phone on 023 8022 3352 or by e-mail Racing@rsyc.org.uk

So whether you’ve raced with us before or not, we look forward to giving you quality, competitive racing on the water and a warm and friendly welcome back at the Clubhouse afterwards.

Fully Crewed Racing
R
oyal Southampton Yacht Club is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive programmes of year-round fully crewed racing of any Solent Yacht Club. Many of our events are run on Southampton Water adjacent to our Ocean Village clubhouse and offer challenging and competitive racing but without the ‘Solent chop’. All our fully crewed races are open to Club members and non-members alike and many are dual scored for both IRC and Club rated boats. Typically, there will be racing for two or three classes but we are always willing to establish a class for any group of six or more similar boats. Every race is followed by a prizegiving in the bar of the Ocean Village clubhouse where hot food and a warm welcome also await. Southampton Water is within easy reach of Southampton, Hamble and Cowes marinas and offers scope for a wide variety of racing using fixed and laid race marks to suit the sailing wind. Conditions are typically more sheltered than in the Solent, whilst the funnelling effect of the channel sometimes means that we have enough sailing breeze when conditions in the Solent are too light.
Sunday Morning Racing Between September and April we race on Sunday mornings. Race Series may vary but typically we run two races of around an hour’s duration each between 10 am and 1 pm. Racing is organised by one or two teams of race officers and committee boats depending on boat numbers.
Thursday Evening Racing Between Easter and the late August bank holiday, our Southampton Water racing is held on Thursday evenings. It’s a great way to relax after a long day by getting out on the water with friends for an hour of racing before sunset. And, as ever, each race is followed by a prize-giving in the Ocean Village clubhouse bar. In 2014 we’re including a new class for double handed boats sailing under white sails.

Southampton Water
O
nce again we have exciting and competitive year-round racing in the relative shelter of Southampton Water. When conditions allow, some races start near to After Barn buoy for the extra convenience of boats coming from the Hamble. Sunday morning racing normally includes two races and the Spring, Evening, and Winter Series are dual scored. DOYLE SAILS FROSBITE SERIES Alternate weekends 10 am, January 12 - March 15* Sponsored by Doyle Sails, this 12 race Series starts the New Year on the water with two races on Southampton Water every other weekend. Get in training for the new season and be back to the Clubhouse by around 1.30 pm for a prize-giving and hot lunch. IRC and RSYC will refund 60 per cent of the 2014 IRC certificate cost to boats completing more than half the Series – see www.rsyc.org.uk for details. * Please see the diary for all race dates. HARKEN SPRING SERIES Sundays 10 am March 23 - April 27 Harken UK will sponsor prizes for this ten race Series with two races every Sunday morning (excluding Easter weekend) for monohulls and multihulls. Results will be dual-scored. Great competition on the water as the days begin to lengthen. We’ll be back in the Clubhouse by around 1.30 pm for a prize-giving and lunch. EVENING SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm May 1 – August 28 Fifteen, yes fifteen, dual scored Southampton Water races on Thursday evenings right through the summer. Since this is the holiday season there are six discards. It’s a great way to relax on a summer’s evening and if you’re struggling for crew why not try it double handed? Entry is open to members and non-members, monohulls and multihulls. There’ll be the usual prize-giving at the Clubhouse after every race. WINTER SERIES S undays 10 am October 12 - November 23 This popular Series again comprises 12 races over six Sundays*. There’ll be two races between 10 am and 1 pm each day. Monohulls with IRC certificates will be dual scored. At the Ocean Village Clubhouse there’ll be prizes, a warm welcome and hot food after racing each week. * No racing on October 26.

RNLI RACE / RALLY Saturday/Sunday, September 27/28 Great fun and one of the friendliest events of the year, this is an opportunity for racers and cruisers to join in expressing our support for the RNLI. This year our destination on Saturday evening will again be the RSYC’s Gins Clubhouse on the River Beaulieu after a Solent race of around three hours. Our fundraising dinner on Saturday night will be followed by a second Solent race on Sunday. CHARITY PURSUIT RACE Sunday, November 30 A light-hearted race to mark the end of our racing year and the start of the festive season. Double Handed Racing
O
ne of the reasons for the popularity of this Series is its continuous evolution and this year we have some major changes to announce:
We keep the Inshore and Offshore Series but add a new ALONGSHORE SERIES. Each will comprise four races but now with one discard. The Island and Nab races move to the Alongshore Series. The Main series will comprise all 12 races with five discards. The Spinlock IRC 2014 DOUBLE HANDED IRC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP June 28/29 The championship will comprise: Laid Marks and Summer Solent races (Saturday) and the Nab Double on Sunday. On Saturday evening there’ll be a celebration at the Ocean Village Clubhouse. The same races will comprise a Club Championship for non-IRC boats. A new Mike Golding Trophy will be awarded to the best boat overall.
Our Sponsors: Our Double Handed Racing wouldn’t be the same without the close and much valued support of our sponsors, Molson Coors. In 2014 the title brand will be Sharp’s Doom Bar. If you’ve not raced double handed, come and see what you’ve been missing! There’s a great atmosphere both on and off the water. In the Sharp’s Doom Bar Double Handed Series there are individual race class prizes and trophies, plus class trophies for the Inshore, Alongshore, Offshore and Main Series. The annual double handed prize giving will be on Saturday, October 25. SPRING SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday, April 12 The first race of the season and of the Main and Inshore Series. Three or four hours racing of a passage flavour in the Solent. A race prize giving and welcome at the Ocean Village Clubhouse after racing. CHERBOURG DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday, May 2 The first cross-Channel event in this year’s Offshore Series. This popular race starts in the central Solent on Friday evening to hopefully provide a daylight landfall. This is the first May Bank Holiday weekend so there’s extra time for the trip home after a prize giving on Saturday evening. WEST PRINCESSA DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, May 17 The first of the new races for 2014 will start and end in the Solent and take boats out to West Princessa Buoy. There’ll be a party at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. WEYMOUTH DOUBLE (Offshore) Saturday/Sunday, June 7/8 The second and third (Cat’4) races of the Offshore Series go to Weymouth from the central Solent with an early start on Saturday morning and the return race starting in Weymouth Bay on Sunday morning. There’s time to relax in Weymouth between races and at the prize giving at the Royal Dorset Yacht Club. www.rsyc.org.uk

SUMMER SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) A race of around two to three hours with a similar passage flavour to the Spring and Autumn Solent Doubles. The aim will be to finish racing by around 3 pm. Evening - There’ll be a prize-giving and celebration at the Ocean Village Clubhouse. Sunday NAB TOWER DOUBLE (Alongshore) This is the classic race of around 30 nm from the central Solent to the Nab Tower and back. Prize-Giving - Championship prizes and trophies will be awarded at the Double Handed annual prize-giving on October 25. ISLAND DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, July 19 Always the most popular inshore event, regularly attracting more than 100 boats. This year we’ll again use the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club’s line for our start and finish off Cowes. Circumnavigate the Isle of Wight and collect a pair of engraved glasses as well as competing for the other prizes and trophies! ST PETER PORT DOUBLE (Offshore) Friday, August 22 The longest and the last of the 2014 Offshore Series. This race over the August Bank Holiday can be challenging but a great welcome awaits us; plus it offers the opportunity to linger and go cruising on the way home. POOLE BAR DOUBLE (Alongshore) Saturday, September 20 New to the 2014 programme, this race to the Poole Bar Buoy will start and end in the Solent. Like the West Princessa race, there’ll be a party at a Solent destination after the race with plenty of time to get home on Sunday. AUTUMN SOLENT DOUBLE (Inshore) Saturday, October 4 The concluding race of the Inshore and Main Series takes us on a three or four hour race with a passage flavour in the Solent. A warm welcome awaits at the Ocean Village prize giving after racing. EVENING SERIES Thursday evenings 7 pm May 1 – August 28 Not part of the Main double handed Series. See above for details of these Southampton Water races which in 2014 will include a double handed white sail class.

Racing SAILING SEMINARS Falling on the fourth Thursday of the month from September to November and January to March, these talks and presentations cover a wide variety of racing and sailing topics and have proved very popular. Starting at 8.30 pm, they follow the Club’s excellent value carvery suppers which are served from 7 pm onwards and so are a great way to spend a winter’s evening.
RADIO CONTROLLED BOATS Started in 2012, our new Radio Controlled Boats section is flourishing and offers a wide range of events throughout 2014. There are seminars, talks and workshops at both the Gins and Ocean Village Clubhouses and as more and more members discover the fascination of this sport we plan to hold more competitive and class racing events. The club starter class, introduced this year, is the Dragon Force RG65, a great and economical way to get into the sport. Other classes sailed are International 1 Metres, Marbleheads and 10 Raters. Members of other RC boat clubs can have limited use of our clubhouses for specific events but can also take advantage of our introductory membership offers for full use of the Club’s great venues. Please see the diary for details of all Radio Controlled Boats events in 2014.

Our Cadet sailing days are very family orientated with parents, grandparents, family and friends all welcome and encouraged to join in. And you don’t need to be an RSYC member to take part. Get hands-on experience, learning how to drive a RIB safely; you will also learn high speed turns and emergency stops. Come dinghy sailing at Gins in May and familiarise yourself with the Club dinghies. There are 2 x 2 day dinghy sailing events run by qualified RYA instructors on the Beaulieu River.

Training
T
he RSYC has been an RYA accredited Training Centre for nearly 20 years. We provide a range of both practical and theory course to Club members and non-members alike.
Theory courses are, in the main, held at the Club with some of the more specialised courses being outsourced to other training schools. The Powerboat Level 2 courses are held on local waters using the Club’s own Ribcraft 585 powerboat. There is also a very healthy training scheme for those members wishing to progress through the RYA qualified race officer scheme and, once again, practical training takes place on the Club committee boat, a Mitchell 31, and the Ribcraft 585. From time to time, a one day structured safety programme for man-overboard training and flare demonstration is run to allow members to practise on their own boats those aspects not normally covered by other courses. The recovery of a dummy from the water using own methods being the main exercise, but the opportunity to handle and fire flares is also part of the day’s activities.
The RYA Courses offered include: Basic Navigation and Safety Theory; Day Skipper Theory; Yachtmaster Theory; Sea Survival; ISAF Offshore Safety Certificate; Diesel Engine; GMDSS VHF; RADAR; First Aid; ISAF Personal Safety. Powrboat Level 2 and practical ‘own boat’ assessments for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) together with Inland Waterways. CEVNI Endorsements are also offered. All courses are run by fully qualified RYA instructors. Furthermore, if members wish to do courses outside those programmed they can express their interest and if there are sufficient numbers, extra courses can be arranged. www.rsyc.org.uk
