Scotscraig Golf Club History Scotscraig Golf Club was founded in 1817 by some members of the . St Andrews Society of Golfers . (later to become the Royal and . Ancient Golf Club) who wished to . play more golf than the Society’s occasional meetings afforded them. One of these members was William Dalgleish of Scotscraig, a section of whose lands was the Garpit, part of which included a racecourse. Within the area of the racecourse golf was already played over six holes, but no record exists to show how long this had been done. The original minute of the Club states – “A party of gentlemen having met in August 1817, it was agreed upon that a club under the name of Scotscraig Golf Club should be established; that there should be two meetings annually, the one in Spring and the other in Autumn and that at the latter, a golf

medal should be played for. . A gold medal having been procured, it was appointed to be played for on Tuesday, September 29, 1818.” William Dalgleish was appointed as the first Captain of Scotscraig Golf Club at this meeting. Competitions of the new Scotscraig Golf Club were decided over three rounds of the Garpit’s six holes. Captain Playfair, later to become Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair, Captain of the Royal and Ancient and Provost of St Andrews, won the first competition for the Gold Medal with 105 strokes over three rounds of the links. The dress code for players at this time was a red jacket trimmed with a green velvet collar. It was also agreed that the golfing uniform should include a buff-coloured uniform vest with small buttons similar to that worn on the jacket, and it was further approved

Scotscraig Golf Club that the penalty for players not suitably attired was two bottles of port. In 1818, the Club officially appointed two of the best known names in golf: Hugh Philip (official club maker) and David Robertson (official feathery ball maker). David’s son Allan became the world’s first ever golf professional. In 1835, the Club went into abeyance for 52 years following the Garpit links having been ploughed up. On the 5th May 1887, Admiral Maitland Dougall presided over a meeting in Templar’s Hall in Tayport to re-constitute Scotscraig Golf Club, and was appointed Captain of the Club.

of the Club, and was met with a growing need for a proper clubhouse. At about this time, Tom Morris was invited from St Andrews to advise on the amount of ground required to extend the course to 18 holes. In the autumn of 1896, it is minuted that “the elegant and picturesque clubhouse just erected on Tayport Links for the Scotscraig Golf Club, was formally opened by Sir John Leng MP.” The total cost of building the clubhouse was £699.15s.10d, plus £101.7s.7d for furnishings.

In April 1888 the “new” course was officially opened, with members being permitted to use the nearby fever hospital as a locker room and meeting place. The layout of the course was altered in time for the 1893 medal, having been extended to nine holes.

In September 1909, Mr A.H. Robertson is recorded as having achieved the earliest hole in one at Scotscraig, and also in this year ladies were permitted to play as limited members. It took nearly 100 years for ladies to become full members. This was approved by the members at the Annual General Meeting in 1997.

The last decade of the 19th century saw a steady increase in membership

In 1923, the course was redesigned with the assistance of James Braid,

one of the “Triumvirate”. The course still retains many of Braid’s traditional architectural features, namely large rolling greens and well-positioned bunkers. Scotscraig today is largely unchanged, and presents a fair but serious challenge to all golfers. The Club has been honoured over the years by the successes of its members, exemplified by A.F.Macfie, winner of the first British Amateur Championship at Hoylake in 1885; J.Gordon Simpson, a Scottish internationalist; and more recently by John Ferguson, who won the British Boys’ Championship in 1956. In more recent years, the course has been used for Final Qualifying for The Open when played over the Old Course at St Andrews, in 1984, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. The history of Scotscraig Golf Club is displayed in a permanent exhibition within the clubhouse covering the period from 1817 to the present date, and visitors and guests are most

Scotscraig Golf Club

The Course Scotscraig is conveniently located only 15 minutes from the famous Old Course, St Andrews and since 1984 has hosted the Final Open Qualifying when The Open has been played over St Andrews, most recently in 2010. Ian Baker-Finch, Brian Barnes, Justin Rose, Mark Mouland, Duffy Waldorf and Sam Torrance are only a few of the famous players to have graced this renowned classic Fife course.

Although the course doesn’t sit exactly adjacent to the coastline, there are a few sea breezes to consider when playing this links-heathland mixture. The most memorable hole is the . par-4 4th, only 366 yards, but with the fairway well protected on the left by large revetted bunkers and a heathery terrain awaiting wayward shots to the right, only well positioned shots will be able to attack this small plateau green.

One lengthy challenge is the par-5 14th, 523 yards, and a test that calls for precise positioning in order to reach the well-guarded green. Players of all levels will find a day’s golf at Scotscraig an enjoyable challenge and a golfing experience they will never forget.

Scotscraig Golf Club Take The Course Tour We hope you enjoy your time with us at Scotscraig Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes from our PGA Professional Craig Mackie which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before. Hole 1 (Admiral) 402 yards, par 4 Place your tee shot left of centre and position the second shot down the right side of the green. Hole 2 (Wood) 374 yards, par 4 The tee shot should be hit down the left and drop the second shot short of the green as it will roll forward. Hole 3 (Gully) 214 yards, par 3 A long par 3. Aim to land your ball on the right side of the green.

Scotscraig Golf Club Hole 4 (Westward Ho) 366 yards, par 4 Our signature hole. Hit the fairway and then choose wisely for your second shot, as the green drops away on . all sides. Hole 5 (Whins) 402 yards, par 4 When hitting your shot to the green, remember to adjust your stance, depending on the lie. Hole 6 (Pond) 150 yards, par 3 A short hole with a newly-created pond a short distance from the tee. Play a full shot to the right portion of the green. Hole 7 (Plateau) 401 yards, par 4 Safety off the tee is important here. . A long/mid iron or rescue club, depending on the wind conditions, short of the ridge, will leave you approximately 200 yards to the green. Hole 8 (High) 387 yards, par 4 Positional play off the tee is important to miss the dangerous bunkers up the left-hand side of the fairway.

Hole 9 (Flagstaff) 484 yards, par 5 A birdie opportunity at this par 5. Try to keep the ball right of centre, this will give you a chance to attack the green. Balls will always feed in to the green from the left. Hole 10 (Cricket) 404 yards, par 4 Position your tee shot right of centre, this will give you a line of sight advantage. Hole 11 (Shanwell) 459 yards, par 4 A tough, long dog leg par 4. Drive the ball long and straight to the left side . of the fairway, leaving a better line to the green. Hole 12 (Rushes) 389 yards, par 4 Hit down the right from the tee and play the ball to the left of the green.

Hole 14 (Garpit) 523 yards, par 5 Play the hole step by step, don’t think of the end result. Hole 15 (Burn) 175 yards, par 3 Excellent par 3 with a split-level green. Correct club selection is essential. Hole 16 (Railway) 479 yards, par 5 The drive, left of centre, is the key to this par 5. A birdie opportunity. Hole 17 (Road) 380 yards, par 4 The tee shot should be positioned inside the right-hand bunkers, to leave an easier approach shot. Hole 18 (Home) 396 yards, par 4 Back towards the clubhouse. Drive down the right to leave a clearer line . to the green.

Hole 13 (Island) 165 yards, par 3 A tricky par 3 with a plateau green. Play long and left as the green slopes from left to right. Normally plays its . full yardage.

Scotscraig Golf Club Members’ Golf All sections of the Club enjoy a great deal of competitive golf throughout the season, both in pursuit of the Club’s numerous honours board competitions and trophies and against other clubs. The Senior Gents, for instance, play around 20 matches at home and away in a typical year. There is a special thrill to representing one’s club in a team environment and a player learns so much more about their game in the heat of competition! After the day’s golf is complete the social side to golf comes to the fore as old friendships are renewed or new ones made in the clubhouse. To keep interest going all through the year, the men enter scratch and handicap teams in the North East Fife Golf Winter League. In terms of Club competitions, the traditional monthly medals and Stablefords can be found in the diary,

as well as more light-hearted fixtures such as the Captain v Vice-Captain or Ladies Captain v Secretary. Singles or pairs, medal play or matchplay, Stableford or some other fun form of competition, there should be something to appeal to everyone.

Scotscraig Golf Club Juniors Being one of the world’s oldest courses, Scotscraig is proud of its history but equally passionate about introducing the game and its traditions to a whole new generation of golfers. Our junior section has thrived in recent years, helped by our Professional, Craig Mackie, whose passion for helping the younger golfers at Scotscraig stems partly from having come up though the Club’s junior . ranks himself. “Juniors are at the future of any golf club,” Craig says. “When I was growing up here there was very little for junior golfers. I remember saying to myself, ‘If I ever become a club golf Pro I’ll be offering as much as I can to the kids.’” The Club has embraced the Scottish Golf Union’s ClubGolf initiative, which aims not only to offer golf to as many youngsters as possible, but to create a development pathway from beginner

Scotscraig Golf Club level through to the highest levels. Scotscraig invites children from local schools to come to the Club for eight weeks of coaching and for some it can be the first stepping stone towards what may become a lifetime’s love of the game. “In Stages 1 and 2 we offer a well structured programme that will help them towards a handicap and to play in a few competitions,” Craig says. “For me Stages 1 and 2 are the stepping stones to choosing potential players for Stage 3, where we can help them progress as far as they can go.” A number of competitions are run throughout the year for young golfers, the juniors have their own presentation evening and there is also the opportunity to experience the thrill . of representing Scotscraig against other clubs. “It is a good thing for the Club to have a large number of juniors,” says Craig “And it creates a good reputation for

the Club to show what we can offer . to children from the local villages. . A lot of our children are from . non-golfing families so it shows we . are really changing the way people see the game.”

The Club has greatly discounted rates for younger golfers right up to the age of 25, with the annual rate for children under 14, for example, costing the equivalent of a little over £1 a week.

Scotscraig Golf Club Open Competitions Scotscraig is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our Club in 1817. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before. One of the ways in which we can . do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and . all abilities. The open season generally starts in May with an individual handicap event for men. Team events for male golfers are to the fore in June and July with an Am-Am tournament for teams of four and a fourball betterball competition and July also sees a handicap event for Juniors.

Greensomes is a format enjoyed by many and mixed teams and ladies both enjoy separate team events in August. The Senior Gents host an open competition at the start of September while the month and the open season closes with a Texas Scramble team tournament. With prizes on offer to the best performers, food and drink available

in the clubhouse and invariably a very reasonable entry fee, it represents outstanding value and what we hope will be a marvellous day out. Formats may change slightly from year to year, but you will find details of upcoming events on our website, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

Scotscraig Golf Club Social Activities Here at Scotscraig we like to consider ourselves a very friendly club and we really feel there is nowhere better to enjoy not only your golf, but everything else that a well-rounded golf club has to offer. An extensive and varied programme . of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that . there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste . in entertainment. The Club tries to put on at least one social occasion a month, enabling members to get together and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere inside our comfortable and historic clubhouse. Events hosted have included traditional favourites such as quiz nights, race nights and curry nights and even an indoor putting competition. The members are partial to a bit of music with tribute acts covering hits from

Michael Buble and Tom Jones both having been well received. Some of the most eagerly anticipated nights in the social calendar are the Club’s annual presentation evenings for men, ladies and juniors. Generally held at the end of the golfing year in November, members pay tribute to the players who have excelled in Club

competitions over the season. The caterers are held in high regard at Scotscraig and offer a regular Sunday roast as well as the occasional carvery. High Teas always go down well and the members look forward to sitting down together to enjoy a festive meal in the run-up to Christmas.
