sussex yacht club

Welcome Established in 1892, the Sussex Yacht Club is proud to be one of the oldest sailing clubs in the country, and although traditions passed down through the years are important, we are fundamentally a modern club that welcomes people from all walks of life. With the main Shoreham clubhouse, extensive boatyard with modern boatlift and moorings on the river adur, along with the original clubhouse and locked deep water moorings within Shoreham Port, SYC is first and foremost a members club with unrivalled facilities that promotes all kinds of sailing. Yachts of all sizes call the club home, with both rallying and racing strongly supported, as is the dinghy section where particular attention is given to encouraging youth sailors. Sussex Yacht Club has also been a RYA Recognised Teaching Centre for over twenty five years, and all the courses offered are internationally recognised, following guidelines set down by the national body for our sport. Preferential training rates are offered to members, and with a healthy cruising and racing programme, new found skills are soon put to good use in great company.

The club also has a diving section and is home to the charitable organisation ‘Sussex Sailability’, supporting handicapped sailors of all abilities. The social life at SYC is another important facet and we endeavour to deliver a satisfying mix of formal and informal functions, underpinned by the efforts of our steward who is well known for hospitality by sailors on both sides of the channel. Complementing the welcoming bar, the SYC restaurant is run by an enthusiastic young chef, where members can dine whilst enjoying arguably the best river views in Shoreham. If you think you might be interested in joining, have a read about the benefits of membership on page 47 and get in contact. On the first Friday of each month there’s a general get together for ‘Club Night’ and we’d be happy to arrange a chaperone to show you around and make introductions. In Sailing

History Sussex Yacht Club was established in 1892 by a group of yachting enthusiasts in order to further the sport of yachting and cruising, and is now one of the oldest sailing clubs in the UK. The club was originally named “The Mosquito Yacht Club” after the one-design yachts favoured by the gentlemen owners (the class itself was named after the blood-sucking insects that once swarmed the Southwick canal).

6

2013 | www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk

At this time meetings were held in a room at the Schooner Inn at Southwick, which was the club’s first rather cramped HQ. After WW1, on 17 May 1919, the club reformed as the Sussex Yacht Club and once again Southwick canal became busy with small boat racing. However, this fast-growing band of keen sailors were then threatened by a rent increase from the pub landlord, which appears to have gone down amongst our merry band rather badly.

In response, the ‘Mosquitos’ soon moved into a converted 40ft Brighton beach boat called the ‘White Swan’ pictured above, purchased from Alfred Sweet, then the Shoreham Harbourmaster (the Sweet family still own Riverside Yard in the port). By the time the members had finished refurbishing this floating clubhouse it boasted not only a bar, but a full-sized piano, which was subsequently removed and replaced by a full-sized billiard table. At this time there were around 50 members and the club happily ticked along racing in the summer and playing billiards in the winter.

sussex yacht club

However, the White Swan was no spring chicken and within a few seasons the amount of bailing required to keep her afloat suggested that another new home was needed, so in 1926 it was decided that the club should be formed into a limited company enabling it to raise funds equitably from the members and so purchase the Old Malt House fronting the Southwick canal. SYC now had a large HQ and more water frontage than the neighbouring Schooner Inn where they once struggled to pay rent on a single room. This new HQ remains today as the SYC Southwick base and overlooks the considerable club moorings.

During 1946 the facilities of the club were further improved by the acquisition of land comprising a river frontage, together with a slipway, hard and boat-shed situated on the south bank of the River Adur, which is opposite the present main Shoreham Clubhouse. In 1950 the continuing need for even further facilities for members was met by the purchase from His Grace the Duke of Norfolk of the freehold of Stow’s Shipyard. This extensive freehold, fronting the River Adur at Shoreham, includes a spacious clubhouse, excellent laying up and fitting out facilities, slipways, and is

now the main centre of the club’s activities. With the help of lottery funding, the Shoreham Clubhouse now enjoys high quality facilities, with full disabled access throughout. We currently have circa 1,300 members and were granted the privilege of wearing a defaced Blue Ensign in 1955 by Admiralty Warrant.

Racing Ever since our foundation in 1892 racing has been a key activity at SYC. The club has a long tradition of hosting major sailing events, including the Sussex Regatta and the famous Royal Escape Race that has seen fleets of up to 100 yachts compete in a 67 mile race across the channel to Fécamp in Normandy.

8

2013 | www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk

With competition at the heart of our club, we tailor both inshore and offshore events to suit our varied SYC fleet. We endeavour to provide satisfying handicap racing for all kinds of yachts and skippers are regularly consulted over what they want from the racing. For the hardy souls who enjoy racing whatever the weather or the temperature, the club racing year starts in early March with the Spring Series comprising eight races with courses set on the day using the inshore marks off Shoreham, with each race taking around 1.5 to 2 hours, usually followed by a banter filled session at the club bar.

There is also an equally hotly contested Autumn Series that often brings out some of the largest fleets of the year. More traditional races, following courses set down long ago by our forbears, include the Black Rock, Double Diamond, Tala Hinna, Ferguson and Pactolus, and we try to ensure that these unique tests are well supported by organising our racing schedule around larger ‘away events’ such as Cowes Week, the Round the Island Race and the Fastnet. The club is always supportive of members flying our burgee on far away start lines, with for example a good showing in the Triangle, ARC and AZAB races.

sussex yacht club

Yachts from SYC compete at the highest levels all round the country, yet we also arrange a slightly less competitive series of Saturday Pursuit races which have proven to be very popular, where boat handling and sail tuning skills can be honed without the pressures of frenetic start lines.

More light hearted is the Christmas Cracker series, held in November and December, with five round-thecan races over four weeks. This is a well-supported series full of Christmas cheer and the racing is levelled by the handicaps being adjusted as the series progresses.

Arguably the two main club events are the Summer and Autumn Regatta’s which are generally five-race series’ held over two days, with boats counting their four best results to determine the overall winner.

Dinghy racing is another facet of SYC with events being held in both the River Adur and also in the locked Southwick Canal. Full safety boat support is always on hand and the dinghy section works hard to get as many out on the water as they can. It has been known for yachties to turn up with older singlehanded laser dinghies, which is always amusing for the youngsters who can

generally sail rings round them (the youth team, who have been trained at SYC on dinghies, are taking Sonars to New York in 2013 to compete in the world championships). So in summary, no matter what kind of boat you sail or what level your skills, you’ll find racing at SYC to suit. Yes we encourage improvement at all levels and racing is by its very nature competitive, but we endeavour to promote safe and enjoyable racing built on respect and camaraderie. We never forget, we sail and race to have fun!

Rallying & Cruising The SYC organises a varied programme of rallies along and across the Channel. They are usually combined with an opening race but yachts can join in and leave these rallies to suit their own timetable. Cruising in company is a great way to explore our coast and make new friends, as well as providing valuable experience on the water.

compulsory and yachts can dip in and out of the organised programme as they choose. Each day of the rally the fleet will move onto the next pre-arranged mooring with either a formal or informal dinner (generally they are extremely informal!) Be it at a hosting yacht club or a waterside pub such as the famous Folly Inn, the evening generally begins with drinks aboard a nominated boat. It’s always a challenge when you don’t know everybody, but even if you have never sailed in company before, after one of our rallies we can guarantee you’ll have new friends.

The usual format is for the aforementioned preliminary race, but we’d emphasise that this is not

We have long standing relationships with both the Club Nautique Valerais at St Valerais-en Caux and SRF (Société

des Régates de Fécamp) so the rallying calendar always features visits to our French friends, with extended cruising for a few days along the French coast. Closer to home and very popular are rallies to the Solent or East to Brighton and Eastbourne, not forgetting the annual ‘voyage’ to nearby Littlehampton that is always a sell-out event. The club’s outstanding location offers easy cruising along the South Coast, with the Solent, Portsmouth, Southampton, Eastbourne and Dover all within reach. Although not organised as official rallies, the SYC burgee often travels much further afield, including round Britain and Ireland, the Med and the Caribbean. www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk | 2013

Boat Yard and Moorings SYC has one of the few proper boatyards on this part of the coast and is reached up the River Adur and Shoreham Port eastern arm with good access over high water with a large and highly accessible private slip and ramp. There are scrubbing posts, and we enjoy a modern and efficient WISE 25 tonne boat hoist complete with mounted crane to conveniently handle engine and mast lifts. 12

2013 | www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk

Additionally the western slip has a tracked cradle that with a powerful winch can handle larger craft up to 38 tonnes; this is a vital resource both for big yachts, barges and the local commercial fishing fleet. Run by Ben our full time Bosun and his assistant Mike, the extensive boat yard can be busy and boat movements should be booked in plenty of time. Priority is given to members, but we take pride in being supportive of the local fishing fleet and other commercial craft and also welcoming sail boat and power craft from all along the south coast.

The yard itself is substantial and we work to accommodate both short term lift and scrub movements, plus longer term layups and projects that can take many years to complete. If you are interested in any of our yard service then please contact the SYC office. Moorings at the club are both tidal adjacent to the Shoreham Club house, and locked within Shoreham Port at Southwick. Competitively priced, both our regular and deep-water sailing moorings are allocated according to a waiting list.

sussex yacht club

There are also visitors moorings both on the river and inside the locked port, and additional space is to be found in the adjacent Lady Bee marina and Riverside moorings. With a number of new pontoon moorings being placed during 2013 by SYC, our aim is to ensure every yacht that wishes to sail with us can be accommodated in fairly short order.

The Clubhouses Unusually we have two club houses, with an older location fronting our moorings in Southwick and our main riverside club house on the in the heart of Shoreham-by-Sea alongside the wonderful new Adur Ferry footbridge.

Southwick

Shoreham

The club purchased the historic Southwick club house back in 1926 and is regularly used by both dinghy sailors and keelboat crews as an informal venue.

Originally the Stow’s ship yard sail loft, the large Shoreham clubhouse is now the focus of activities at SYC and is where we hold most of our social events. It is here that you’ll find the secretary’s office, bar, lounge, restaurant and changing rooms. There are workshops, a training room and extensive parking throughout the large boat yard.

There are toilet and shower facilities, along with a kitchen and bar which are opened to support events such as evening barbecues and the Christmas Cracker supper. Store rooms within this building are available to members and the whole place is a wonderfully traditional venue for parties.

Bar and Restaurant Situated on the first floor of the Shoreham clubhouse, our bar and lounge area is for many the heart and soul of the yacht club. Lunch time during the week brings a gentle hubbub of chatter and gossip as club stalwarts gather, along with those taking a lunch break from working on boats in the yard or perhaps RYA training sessions downstairs. As long as there are members 18

present then the bar stays open in the evenings, welcoming those seeking a quiet spot for an après dinner tipple. Friday’s are livelier with those on the way home from work dropping in for a beer.

Ho’s Bar The bar has been run by Hocine Zioui for more than 20 years and he provides a friendly welcome to members and their guests all year round. Hocine is famed by visiting sailors from far and wide for his uncanny ability to remember everyone, and their favourite tipple! The bar is open as follows (but please note that it may close for a session if there are no customers present for an hour). Please support the bar!

sussex yacht club

• Monday to Friday* 12:00-14:30 and & 18:30-23:00 • The bar may also open from 17:30 on Fridays - please check website* • Saturday 12:00-15:00 & 19:0023:00 • Sunday 12:00-21:00 Members and guests can can enjoy a drink or two at amazing club prices (for example a pint of Harvey’s Sussex Bitter is currently just £2.50). In the summer the club balcony provides one of the best views of the river in Shoreham and if it is a little too cold out there for lunch, then there is the newlyrefurbished conservatory. The comfortable lounge area provides a quiet area to read the latest copy of your favourite sailing magazine.

Restaurant The excellent restaurant is run by our club caterer Simon Haffenden, who with his delightful dining team, has raised the culinary standards at SYC to new heights since taking over the franchise.

Simon usually over-caters to allow for a few ‘walk-ins’, however, it has become so popular that booking has become essential - please refer to the website for upcoming sittings, functions and contact details.

He delivers outstanding value with quality ingredients and portions to suit a hungry sailor and, while the restaurant is open on a regular basis, we would suggest booking in for the roast on Sundays - great food and no washing up! Simon’s freshly cooked traditional Sunday roast includes two courses made with fresh vegetables and all the trimmings and includes coffee and a cheese board. www.sussexyachtclub.org.uk | 2013

Social Life at SYC For SYC members it seems that talking about and celebrating sailing whilst ashore is just as important as getting out on the water itself, and we try to provide as many opportunities to roll out salty sea dog anecdotes as is possible with a full and varied social programme.

The busy house committee endeavour to suit all tastes with a broad mix of formal and decidedly informal events; dress codes vary from lounge suit or Cowes Rig for the gents and evening gowns for the ladies on perhaps two or three nights of the year, with casual wear being the norm.

The only restrictions on dress are that stilettos are not allowed upstairs as the heels play havoc with our historic wooden restaurant floor, and the wearing of caps or hats inside at the bar may land you with a fine in the form of having to buy all the members present a drink.

There are also social events at all of the club rallies on both sides of the channel.

Quiz nights are also held through the year, and the sailing section arrange a number of Wednesday evening lectures with guest speakers on subjects such as the racing rules, safety and first aid at sea and sail design and trimming.

Themed nights are also a regular occurrence when loud Hawaiian shirts or pirate outfits are the way to go

Social Life at SYC continued Club night at SYC is an informal monthly gathering, usually on the first Friday of each month when members are encouraged to come along to the main Shoreham club house, treating the occasion very much like a night out at a good pub with friends, looked after by our wonderful Steward Hocine and his team. Simon and his catering team always lay on a smashing supper for those who wish to dine, or you can just turn up to relax with a drink. When we’re talking about club night we have to also mention the raffle which usually rounds off the evening, leaving the stalwarts to carry on propping up the bar until the last orders are drained.

Regular highlights of the social year include; Burns Night with haggis, malt and sword dancing, St.Georges Night with traditional English fare and entertainment including live music and a not-to-be missed ‘Mummers Play’, and the Summer Party with DJ, loud shirts and a BBQ on the balcony. The informal Fitting Out and Laying Up supper evenings can become rather lively and mark the start and finish of the traditional sailing season.

Tickets marked ‘black tie’ or ‘Cowes Rig’ are reserved for just a few special nights of the year; the Prizegiving Ball is our annual awards night which is generally in November, whilst after the Christmas Party posh frocks are suggested again for New Years Eve, which is all that you might expect!

Diving The Diving Section of Sussex Yacht Club has a long and distinguished history. It was formed in 1954 at the Brighton and Worthing Branch of the British SubAqua Club and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004.

Since joining forces with SYC in 1999, much integration has taken place, with many divers now enjoying sailing and many sailors having taken the plunge to investigate the world beneath their boats.

Many locations around the British coast have been dived, from Cornwall to the Orkney Islands. Expeditions to coral reefs in the Red Sea, Kenya, the Caribbean, and Papua New Guinea are also made throughout the year.

The club has its own dive boats (8m & 6m RIBs) moored at SYC, with diving taking place throughout the year, weather permitting. A lot of diving takes place locally between Beachy Head and Selsey Bill, with around 200 sites plotted within a 25-mile radius of the clubhouse.

The club has its own compressor on site and provides free fills to members. We also offer Nitrox fills to divers in the club at a small charge.

Diving continued As a BSAC branch (007) we can train Members from an “Introduction to Diving up to BSAC Advanced Diver level. BSAC recognises the diving qualifications awarded by other diving organisation and members can choose to maintain their existing qualifications or transfer to the equivalent BSAC grade. In other words, PADI and divers with other qualifications are more than welcome.

If you are interested in training as a diver, or you already dive, the Diving Section would be happy to talk to you. They hold a very informal evening, each Wednesday evening (from 20.30) in the bar, where you would be able to meet the members and ask any questions.

Sussex Sailability Sailability was set up by the Royal Yachting Association to enable disabled people to be able to sail. With the aid of a National Lottery Grant, the Sussex Yacht Club was able to set up a local branch called Sussex Sailability. The main premises at Shoreham were modified to accommodate a disabled toilet, a disabled changing room, disabled parking and a lift to the bar, while the club members have been very attentive to the needs of disabled people, building small ramps on all the lips of doorways.

Our Fleet is composed of boats that are suitable for a disabled person to sail or to crew. We have eight small single and double-handed boats called ‘Access’ dinghies and three larger boats to go to sea in and carry relatively large numbers of people, called ‘Sports 16’. We also have a Drascombe Lugger, which is suitable for people with more severe disabilities, as well as two SONAR 23ft open keelboats, which are highly competitive racing machines but can also be taken out for cruises. We have hoists to help people who would find it too difficult to get in or out of a dinghy on their own and a range of buoyancy aids and waterproof clothing, along with a lot of

enthusiastic volunteers who will help rig, launch, recover, wash and put away the boats. Initially, new recruits sail with an instructor on the river but, once safe and competent, you can sail solo if you wish, with the option to also join in sea races. For more information on sailing or volunteering take a look at the website www. sussexsailability.org

How does the club run? We are a private members club registered as a Limited Company with membership open to all. After a one year probationary period Members are encouraged to become a shareholder for the princely sum of ÂŁ1 which then entitles them to a vote at the AGM.

We have a number of people employed by the club including the Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Accountant, Admin Assistant (training), Senior Boatswain, Boatswain and Maintenance Operative. The bar and restaurant are operated under two separate franchise agreements. Various committees, formed wholly of member volunteers, look after various aspects of club operations and development, reporting to the main board which comprises five Flag Officers, and a further twelve Directors. Any member can stand for election as a Director, and with a term of three years there is always a healthy influx of new ideas and enthusiasm.

Flag Officers are elected for a term of one year at the Annual General Meeting of the Company, which is usually held in January. Additionally there is an annual sailing meeting when skippers and crews can debate the shape of the sailing activities at the club, along with an annual forum meeting in September when members can submit questions for debate.

How does the club run? continued With such a large and diverse membership there are always going to be differences in opinion, but we do try and consult as much as is possible; for example a new initiative was a member wide survey in 2012 which illuminated a number of good and bad points which will help form future development (an exercise we hope to repeat). Everyone from the permanent staff to the Directors, Flag officers or general committee members are approachable and welcome positive open discussion on any subject.

Keeping in contact with our members is vital and as well as the regular meetings we publish committee meeting minutes online, and send out regular email newsletters (anybody can register for this news letter on the website). The club also publishes a professionally produced glossy A4 magazine called ‘Wavelength’ full of news and member articles two or three times a year and also has a busy website.

Joining SYC New members are the lifeblood of our club, so if you are interested contact the office and we’ll arrange an invitation to our informal monthly club night when you can enjoy supper and a chat at the bar. You can attend as a guest of a club member who can answer your questions and make introductions.

Membership at SYC is open to everybody with competitive subscriptions and a new low cost entry scheme called NAMS for those intending to make the most of our on-the-water activities; you could become a member for as little at £7.65 per month! Our club offers a wide range of facilities to those interested in many forms of sailing and also diving. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young, single, student or family we have something to interest you.

We also hold Open Days when members of the public are able to come along and better understand the benefits of becoming a yacht club member - the 2013 date has been somewhat delayed due to the new Shoreham footbridge works blocking our Western pedestrian entrance, but if you are interested in becoming a member please drop in at any time to look around and have a chat (weekends are best and if you can contact us first we’ll make sure there is somebody tasked with looking after you).

Joining SYC continued SYC membership rates are highly competitive when ranked against comparable yacht clubs, especially when you consider the boat yard and training discounts that can be obtained. Whilst we are on the subject of lucre, drinks at club prices can make a big difference these days, and although our restaurant prices are never going to compete with the mass catering discounts on the high street, our chef strives to deliver value for money with healthy portions and fresh ingredients.

If you join up with one of our standard subscriptions you immediately enjoy all the benefits of membership including discounts on yard services, club moorings, great bar and dining value and the great deals on RYA and other training at SYC. Single memberships are available, as are group memberships, which cover partners and any number of children under 18, while we also offer country and young person’s memberships, details of which can be supplied on application.

If you are intending to make the most of SYC by getting straight out on the water then you may qualify for membership under the New Active Member Scheme (NAMS), which has been introduced in 2013 to encourage those keen on getting wet with a substantial 40% discount on subscription for your first year of membership.
