Welcome For 100 years, Temple Golf Club has provided both members and visitors with a world of character, inspiration and unparalleled natural beauty. The chalk downland course was designed by the 1887 and 1889 Open Champion Willie Park Junior and to this day the spirit of his original course layout is maintained. Temple is a highly rated all year round golfing venue enjoying magnificent panoramic views over the River Thames and Chiltern Hills. The backdrop to the 1st tee is simply breathtaking. Predominantly built on chalk, the course drains very well and is renowned for being perfectly playable in all but the very worst of weather conditions with winter greens and tees rarely used. Conveniently located about 20 minutes from Heathrow in a triangle formed by Henley-on-Thames, Marlow and Maidenhead, Temple is within just a few miles of both the M4 and M40 motorways so the Club is easily reached from many parts of the country. The renowned convivial atmosphere of the the attractive traditional Clubhouse, which sits high up overlooking the course, provides a wonderful setting for a quiet drink, a snack or a meal and a warm welcome awaits at one of the friendliest clubs in the Home Counties.

Club History The Club was formed in 1909 by Captain G MacDonald of The Guards Club in Maidenhead along with a number of other officers and local gentry. Land was leased from the estates of Bisham Abbey and Temple Park and Willie Park Junior was commissioned to design and build the course which opened for play in May 1910. In 1912 Louis Oppenheimer was invited to join the Board of Directors so starting the long and continuing association between the Oppenheimer Family and Temple Golf Club. Raymond Oppenheimer joined Temple as a junior towards the end of the Great War. By the age of 16 his handicap was down to scratch and he went on to become one of England’s foremost amateur golfers, captaining his country during the period 1947 - 1951. Raymond Oppenheimer’s single biggest golfing achievement was being appointed Captain of the GB & Ireland Walker Cup team in 1951 . He was one of those responsible for launching the Golf Foundation in 1952, a body that has done so much to promote golf amongst the young ever since. Through Raymond Oppenheimer’s involvement in the great game, many of Britain’s finest amateur golfers regularly frequented Temple during the late forties, fifties and sixties. Often a Raymond Oppenheimer Select Team would be formed to play the Walker Cup team of the day in practice weekends held at Temple. During his lifetime, Raymond Oppenheimer was friends with many of the game’s greatest players including Sam Snead, Peter Thompson, Bobby Locke, Roger & Joyce Wethered, Bobby Jones and Molly Gourlay and consequently many of them played at Temple. Molly Gourlay won the Temple Ladies Open in 1922 and went on to represent Great Britain in many international matches including the first Curtis Cup match at Wentworth in 1932.

Mr Raymond, as he was affectionately known, also took a close interest in the career of Henry Cotton who was appointed as the Professional at Temple in 1954. Raymond Oppenheimer was elected President of Temple in 1956 and served in that capacity until his death in 1984. Raymond’s nephew Nicky is the current President and takes a keen interest in the Club’s affairs.
occasions to play in the Temple Celebrity Amateur Golf Tournament.
The towering figure of Henry Cotton, or Sir Henry as he became a few days after his death on 22nd December 1987, was the master of British Golf for five decades. He was Open Champion three times, a journalist writing all his own copy, the author of many books, a keen photographer, a golf course architect, a great teacher and a keen supporter of young golfers. From the very beginning, well known faces have been seen at Temple including actors Sir Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracey, James Stewart, James Mason, aviators Amy Johnston and Guy Gibson, Prince Bernhard and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and so the list goes on. Temple also has a long tradition of hosting Celebrity golf events in aid of charity. As early as 1952, a challenge match was held between Bing Crosby and Bob Hope representing America and Ted Ray and Donald Peers representing Great Britain. This special match attracted huge crowds as did an exhibition round played by Greg Norman in the 1980s. More recently, some of Britain’s best-loved stars of sport and entertainment including Sir Michael Parkinson, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Laurie Holloway, Michael Barratt, Kenny Lynch, Sir Terry Wogan, Sir Henry Cooper, Jimmy Tarbuck, Peter Cook, Ray Clemence, Bernard Cribbins, Jeremy Bates, Jimmy Hill, John Conteh, Gary Lineker, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, Dennis Waterman, Alan Hansen and many, many more have turned out on a number of

About the Course Standing on the 1st tee, the Thames Valley spreads out before you and with Bisham, Marlow and the River Thames shimmering in the distance, you know there is something special about this course. The 1st hole, a spectacular Par 4 drop hole, leads you to an undulating course with beautiful views throughout the round. The 8th is another stunning hole, this time a Par 3 which takes you down to the lowest point of the course. From there you start to gently wind your way back up to the Clubhouse. This 6210 yard, Par 70 course remains true to its original design and has many special holes which provide challenges to golfers of all abilities. The 10th, for example, is a long Par 3 with a hidden green sunk into a bowl and is listed amongst “The Top 100 Most Unusual Golf Holes in the United Kingdom. Whatever the season, the course always has something very special to offer. Spring has its many shades of green as the leaves burst into life. Summer brings a stunning myriad of colour with the wild flowers including several rare species of wild orchids in full bloom. Autumn, is utterly spectacular with the varying russet shades of the countless specimen trees on the course, creating a simply stunning backdrop and due to the fact that it is built on chalk, the course is an excellent winter golfing venue. Come and play this lovely golf course and enjoy a wonderful walk in the beautiful English countryside.

Take the Course Tour The following course tour provides an insight into how best to play and navigate the course.
The 1st Hole - 381 yards - Par 4 This drop hole is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular opening holes in the southern counties with panoramic views over Marlow, the Thames Valley and the Chilterns beyond.
The 2nd Hole - 425 yards - Par 4 A long and very testing par 4, well worthy of its low stroke index. Many golfers treat this as a par 5, which it is for ladies, and are happy to walk off with a 5 on their card.
The 3rd Hole - 364 yards - Par 4 Probably one of the most difficult second shots on the golf course but one, that if executed well, should yield a birdie opportunity. The well contoured green has a very narrow entrance and is protected by greenside bunkers left and right.
The 4th Hole - 509 yards - Par 5 A straightforward par 5 but fairway bunkers and strategically placed copses of trees will catch wayward shots.
the 5th Hole - 144 yards - Par 3 Take care not to be fooled by this relatively short par 3. Finding and staying on the putting surface requires some thought. The green is well bunkered and slopes down from front to back. A ball landing short of the slope in front of the green is unlikely to run up onto the putting surface.

The 6th Hole - 390 yards - Par 4 When viewed from the white tee, copses of trees on either side of the fairway combined with rough on the right-hand side of the hole give the impression of a fairly narrow landing area. However, from the yellow and red tees the driving area seems much more inviting. Once the fairway has been found, most golfers will be left with a mid to short iron approach to a severely contoured green which slopes down from front to back and right to left.
The 7th Hole - 346 yards - Par 4 A slight right to left dog-leg hole although the camber of the fairway is in the opposite direction which makes for a challenging tee shot. It is difficult to avoid a sloping lie for your second shot but you will have rewarding views over the Thames Valley from Hurley to Harleyford. Two putts from anywhere on this green represent a good result.
The 8th Hole - 230 yards - Par 3 As you approach the tee for this longish, downhill and picturesque par 3, you will have a wonderful view over rolling wooded hills, a vista that has hardly changed during the 100 years of the Club’s existence.
The 9th Hole - 513 yards - Par 5 (4) A testing par 5 from the competition and ladies tees. From the yellow tees the hole is played as a Par 4, the longest on the course at 434 yards. A great golf hole that should be played with the head rather than the heart. Although longer hitters can get up in two, the reward is seldom worth the risk. With dense woodland on both sides of the hole and a fairway which slopes down from right to left along the entire length of the hole, the 9th represents a real test of golf.

The 10th Hole - 243 yards - Par 3 A very unusual and fairly tough par 3 in that the green is completely hidden in a deep hollow probably formed by an old chalk well. Beware of the greenside bunker lurking at the bottom of the hollow on the left-hand side of the green and the subtle contours which can make putting a modicum tricky.
The 11th Hole - 412 yards - Par 4 A blind tee shot represents the start point for this long and searching par 4. Do not be too greedy here as there is an Out of Bounds hazard on the left of the hole whilst deep meadow rough lies in wait on the right. The likely mid iron approach is to an elevated two-tiered green with a very steep bank rising off the back.
The 12th Hole - 498 yards - Par 5 The last of three par 5’s on the men’s card (there are five for ladies), the 12th is probably the most straight forward of the three and thus represents the most realistic birdie opportunity. The hole looks inviting from the tee and the fairway is fairly generous. Your approach shot to this green is key and you should aim to leave it below the hole whenever possible. Potentially a difficult green and two putts here is a good return.

The 13th Hole - 137 yards - Par 3 This is a short hole, playing uphill from the tee. Beware the woods close to the back of the green but if you can find the green the putting surface is one of the flatter ones on the course.
The 14th Hole - 337 yards - Par 4 An accurate rather than long tee shot is the key to this hole which dog legs slightly to the right with a two-tiered green that is well guarded by trees and bunkers.
The 15th Hole - 396 yards - Par 4 This interesting par 4 slopes from right to left ending with a fairly flat green but with further hazards to its left. As the ground runs from the right to left, an approach shot aimed to the right of the green will normally work well.
The 16th Hole - 213 yards - Par 3 Turning for home this is the third 200 plus yard par 3 for the men but a fairly straight forward short par 4 for ladies. It has a very well bunkered entrance leading to a long reverse two-tiered green.
Temple Golf Club | 19
Take the Course Tour
(continued)
The 17th Hole - 413 yards - Par 4 This is a tough driving hole as it doglegs left with a blind tee shot. At average driving length the ground falls sharply from left to right and a tee shot too far to the right will come to rest either in meadow rough or under the overhanging branches of a strategically located Beech tree. Even a well placed tee shot leaves an exacting second to an elevated green protected by humps, hollows and run-offs to the right and a sizeable bunker to the left. A bogey 5 is a good score here.
The 18th Hole - 259 yards - Par 4 The Clubhouse beckons but first a tempting and potentially rewarding par 4 needs to be negotiated. Remain cautious of the meadow rough to the right of the hole and beware of the two tiered green, this time not front to back but with a ridge running the length of the putting surface and a step down from left to right. A gentle finishing hole that produces more birdies than any other on the course.

Membership A relatively small club in terms of membership gives Temple two huge benefits. Firstly, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere where everybody tends to know everybody else and, secondly, access to the golf course is very good all year round. Temple has a wide range of membership packages to suit all needs:
arrangements with selected golf clubs in England and in addition, Temple plays friendly and competitive matches against other local clubs.
Full Membership To become a Full member we do ask that you have an official handicap of 24 (gents) and 36 (ladies). However, if you do not have an official handicap or it has lapsed, don’t despair, we can help you to achieve one. Ideally new applicants should have existing members to Propose and Second their applications but if you do not know an existing member, a letter of introduction from a past or present club may be acceptable in support of your application for membership. If neither of these options is possible then we will arrange for an informal playing-in round with one or two members of the Membership Committee.
Restricted Full (Weekdays plus Weekend Afternoons) or Weekday Membership These categories are for those who do not require seven day access to the course. The handicap requirement for this category of membership is 28 for men and 36 for ladies but again we can help you achieve a handicap if necessary. As well as providing access to the course, clubhouse and practice facilities; Full, Restricted Full and Weekday membership include some tremendous value for money added benefits. Temple is a member of the 1909 Club and members of Temple may play at other 1909 clubs by prior arrangement on a courtesy basis. The Club also participates in the County Card Scheme which provides discounted green fees at nearly 1,000 golf clubs throughout the UK. Societies & Visitors Temple is a traditional private members’ golf club located in the Thames Valley and lies in a triangle formed by Marlow to the north, Maidenhead to the East and Henley to the West; and it is within 5 minutes of the M4 and M40 motorways. The golf course is beautifully situated in unspoilt landscape and enjoys extensive panoramic views overlooking the River Thames and Chilterns beyond. Throughout the years Temple has built a reputation for representing all that is good about golf and the Club is respected for the part it has played in furthering the game. 6,210 yards in length and with a Par of 70, the golf course is laid out on chalk downland and hence is free draining and less affected by adverse weather conditions than many others. The course is undulating but not unduly tiring and the layout is both challenging and interesting, difficult enough to test the low handicap player but friendly enough to encourage those with higher handicaps and on no two consecutive days are golfing conditions the same.

Teaching The Head Professional at Temple Club has built a recognised teaching academy which provides coaching to golfers of all abilities and ages. The Temple philosophy to teaching has always been to help pupils understand their own swings and be able to analyse situations better themselves on or off the golf course. In addition, the Club’s PGA Professionals are able to offer advice on golf fitness including information on golf muscle groups and training exercises designed to promote flexibility and improve core strength. Communication of swing analysis, whether basic or advanced, packaged in an enjoyable and fun learning session and set in picturesque and tranquil surroundings has and will always be our aim at Temple Golf Club. The benefits to the pupil are huge.
