rentham Park Golf Club has established itself as a superb parkland course conveniently located with excellent access from junction 15 of the M6.

Set in the former grounds of Trentham Hall, once the seat of the Duke of Sutherland, Trentham Park is an 18-hole par-71 course. Measuring 6,390 yards from the back tees, there are many demanding holes, offering both high and low handicap golfers a fair and exciting challenge.

architect, to reflect the ever-increasing demands of modern-day golf.

The pleasantly wooded course makes excellent use of its water features, including an unforgettable opening drive, where it is necessary to skirt a waterfall and lake to achieve par.

The refurbished clubhouse offers firstclass facilities and the club’s reputation for making societies and visitors welcome is well deserved, with the food being as good as the course.

Greens and surrounds have been redesigned and re-bunkered by Steve Marnoch, the international golf course

We really look forward to welcoming you to our very friendly club soon.

We are proud of our work with younger golfers and Ryder Cup player David Gilford and European tour player Simon Wakefield both came through the club’s junior ranks.

s the name would suggest, the club is sited on the Trentham Park Estate, alongside Trentham Park and Gardens. The famous gardens, designed by Capability Brown and Henry Holland in 1758, and latterly by Sir Charles Barry in the 1840s have been brought back to their former glory in recent years.

The restoration work won one of the most prestigious European gardening awards in September 2010 and the new-look gardens have become “one of the UK’s must-see gardens” in the opinion of television’s Alan Titchmarsh. The Barry Gardens and fourth Trentham Hall were the result of works commenced by the 2nd Duke of Sutherland, George Granville, who was also responsible for the private golf course, comprising five holes, created in an area then known as Fern Hills. However, with the ever-growing potteries and the nearby River Trent virtually an open

sewer, the Sutherlands abandoned the hall in 1905 and retreated to Scotland. The hall was demolished after the county council rejected it as a gift. After the Duke’s departure the manager of the estate decided to extend this course to 18 holes, by creating a further 13 holes on land to the west of Hargreaves Pool. This was completed in 1911 and opened to the general public. The following year it was made a members’ club by members paying a yearly subscription direct to the estate. However it was closed down in 1917-18, due to most of the members being in the trenches during the First World War.

When the club was restarted in 1936, the new layout meant that some new ground had to be taken in so the course was constructed partly in Trentham Park itself and partly on the new ground.

When the club was restarted in 1936, the new layout meant that some new ground had to be taken in so the course was constructed partly in Trentham Park itself and partly on the new ground. It was decided to alter the first 13 holes to 12, by removing one of the par 3 holes. This done, the Duke’s five holes were retained, the last five holes were modified and a new hole, the present 17th, was created, which also allowed the 18th to become a par 4 instead of a par 3.

The man responsible for getting the club up and running again was Mr. E. B. Sharpley, the then Town Clerk of Stoke-on-Trent. He came to an arrangement with the Duke of Sutherland, put up the money and started the club as a private venture. When he retired the lease was taken on by Mr Jack Hawthorn, the then Club Captain and later by Mr V. Hopwood.

The members took over the lease in 1955 and thus was born Trentham Park Golf Club as we know it today. Visitors remark on the clubhouse’s friendly air as well as that unusual thing - atmosphere. No visitor need ever remain out of place at Trentham Park. For years, the club has had a reputation for the friendliness of its members and that tradition is as strong today as it ever was.

he Course

T

he course layout uses the natural features such as lakes, streams and the terrain to give the low handicapper a challenge but always leaves a bail-out option for the high handicapper or less adventurous golfer.

8 / Trentham Park Golf Club

The first nine holes offer both diversity and interest and the back nine are probably some of the most challenging holes to be found on any golf course. You don’t have to go far to discover the quality of the course, as the very first hole must rank as one of the best openers in the country. It is a right-hand dog-leg and experienced golfers who know the lie of the land will attempt to cut the corner of the lake. More modest players will, if they are wise, play for safety. The green is beautifully sited in the shadow of an expansive oak tree which is situated to the right. The hole measures 477 yards, so cannot be regarded lightly!

One of the features of the third hole is that the drive is over a steep hill. Naturally, it is a blind hole but if the drive is long and comes to rest in the little valley then a well-directed second should find the putting surface. The ninth hole is worthy of special mention. It is 377 yards and a natural par four. The green is so tightly protected with bunkers and natural features that this hole is anything but a regulation par! The tenth and eleventh holes are worthwhile taking care over because each of them has trouble in store for the golfer with a tendency for slicing and the twelfth is notable for a long carry from the tee. At this

The first nine holes offer both diversity and interest and the back nine are probably some of the most challenging holes to be found on any golf course.

hole there is also a chance that a misplaced shot will end up out of bounds. The fourteenth is a very testing hole that requires a long straight carry with a second shot over a stream to an elevated green. The fifteenth is one of absorbing interest, with a long carry over a ravine, to the wellbunkered green. It has been said that if a golf course is a golf course at all it should have a testing finish. If this is correct, then Trentham Park has every claim to be included amongst the great golf courses, for the last three holes all present a tough challenge, measuring 371 yards, 447 yards and 402 yards respectively.

The eighteenth, like many of the famous Scottish courses, incorporates a brook which runs along the right hand of the green. This means that once more, the slicer is heavily penalised. In fact, it can be said that Trentham Park is definitely not a slicer’s course, so if you wish to enjoy it to the full book a lesson with our Professional Simon Lynn who will help you eliminate that undesirable shot from your game!

that some of the holes at Trentham Park were as testing and as good as can be found. The length of the course from the white tees is 6,390 yards and the par, 71. The Standard Scratch Score is also 71. The course condition and presentation are first class with lush fairways that virtually eliminate bare lies and with greens that are receptive and of uniform pace.

Whilst the course provides many challenges, if the player steers a reasonably straight path then everything will be satisfactory, although it can never be said that it is easy! The course has tried many highly-skilled golfers, and it was said by Charles Stowe

P

repare for your visit to Trentham Park by familiarising yourself with each hole over the coming pages and make the most of your round with our holeby-hole guide. You can also prepare yourself for the challenges that await, as well as pick up some invaluable playing tips from our club professional, Simon Lynn.

Hole 1 (Lake) 477 yards, par 5 A good tee shot here is key. Hit the fairway and there is a good chance to make a birdie. Beware of the greenside trap short left. Hole 2 (Slope) 409 yards, par 4 Keep your drive left to find the fairway. A tricky second shot again needs to find the green with water to the right which is closer than you think. Hole 3 (Bell) 285 yards, par 4 Nothing fancy here. A well-hit iron over the marker post will leave a short second shot. Another good birdie chance.

10 / Trentham Park Golf Club

Hole 4 (Short’un) 104 yards, par 3 A short par 3 but don’t lose your focus as bunkers will gather any loose tee shot. Hole 5 (Coronation) 357 yards, par 4 Take the water and bunker out of play to leave a mid to short-iron approach. Longer hitters might fancy their chances at going for the green. Hole 6 (Ridge) 443 yards, par 4 Plays shorter than its yardage. Avoid the fairway bunker and beware of a very tricky green that slopes from left to right.

The first nine holes offer both diversity and interest and the back nine are probably some of the most challenging holes to be found on any golf course.

Hole 7 (Deception) 191 yards, par 3 A very good par 3 which requires you to carry the ball all the way to the green to avoid the swale short of the green.

Hole 10 (Twin Oaks) 530 yards, par 5 Longer hitters can take it over the left bunker otherwise play it as a three-shot hole to the green. Five is a good score.

Hole 13 (Park) 154 yards, par 3 Don’t underestimate this par 3, it causes of a lot of problems. Take your par gratefully and move on.

Hole 8 (Test) 422 yards, par 4 A straightforward tee shot with very little trouble ahead. Avoid the two greenside bunkers and test your putting prowess on a fast, deep green, sloping from back to front.

Hole 11 (Dip) 314 yards, par 4 Keep slightly left off the tee to leave a simple approach up the green. Avoid the bunkers to have a chance of a birdie.

Hole 14 (Dip) 314 yards, par 4 Keep slightly left off the tee to leave a simple approach up the green. Avoid the two greenside bunkers to have a chance of a birdie.

Hole 9 (Willow Pond) 377 yards, par 4 Avoid the well-positioned fairway bunker. The second shot is a little deceiving into a deep green and beware the danger lurking beyond the flag should you misjudge your approach.

Hole 12 (Deer Fence) 569 yards, par 5 There is another well-positioned fairway bunker to avoid off the tee as well as out of bounds down the right-hand side. The green is hidden away, but aim for the far tree and you won’t be far away.

(Continued) Hole 15 (Cottages) 163 yards, par 3 The wind often swirls here so beware, as it confuses most. There are just three bunkers to avoid and then a quick green to tackle that slopes from back to front.

Hole 17 (Sutherland) 447 yards, par 4 A long, sweeping par 4 to the right. It takes two very good hits to reach this long narrow green and there is out of bounds to the left of the tree.

Hole 16 (Thro’gap) 371 yards, par 4 Your second toughest tee shot of the day. Make sure you reach the corner and your job is almost done. The green slopes from right to left.

Hole 18 (Stream) 402 yards, par 4 You’re nearly home. A blind tee shot needs to find the fairway and will leave a perfect approach to a well-guarded green. Take your par and shake hands.

rentham Park Hall of Fame

T

rentham Park has always prided itself on how it has nurtured young golfers at all stages of the club’s development. Nothing should give a club more pleasure than seeing one of its own come through the junior ranks and go on to compete with honour and distinction, representing themselves, their club and, in some cases, their country against their peers. The club has produced many fine golfers over the years. Ernest Millward and Geoffrey Marks, both former Walker Cup players, lived

beside the course and as lads played their first golf here. Geoffrey Mills, the well-known Midlands amateur champion and former Staffordshire champion, was also a member. Two male juniors to graduate to the professional ranks in recent years have been David Gilford and Simon Wakefield. As an amateur, David won the English Amateur championship in 1984 and represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup. That success continued as a professional, with six wins on the European Tour and selection for the Ryder Cup teams of 1991 and 1995.

Simon is another Trentham Park player to compete on the European Tour and most famously was in contention going into the final round of the 2008 Open Championship. Trentham Park’s most famous female player is probably Sarah Gallagher, who was English Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Champion in 1996.

e welcome visitors to Trentham Park Golf Club from Monday to Friday, with weekends reserved for our very active golfing membership who are eager to make use of the course.

After your round take time to enjoy our renowned hospitality with some good honest home-cooked bar snacks along with a drink or two in our ‘19th Hole’. We invite all our guests to make themselves at home and make it their home club for a day! In the less busy winter months in particular there are some outstanding deals to be had offering golf followed by a snack or more substantial meal, all for a very reasonable price. Make sure you check out our website, trenthamparkgolfclub.com, so you are in a position to take advantage of the latest offers.

We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we do insist on a minimum standard of smart casual dress at all times. Blue denim is not permitted and correct golf shoes must always be worn on the course. Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

he friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the clubhouse provides a comfortable setting in which to unwind after play and to enjoy a refreshing drink and, perhaps, a bite to eat.

Players can reflect on contrasting fortunes and the highs and lows of the contest while watching fellow golfers complete their rounds. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers and lagers, wines and spirits and a choice of soft drinks. Hot and cold food is served daily (except Mondays), with a tasty breakfast and lunch menu and an evening menu is available on Thursday, Friday (bookings only) and Saturday. Members appreciate the good food at Trentham Park as much as they do the golf, with the

traditional Sunday lunches on offer at the club proving particularly popular. There is a restaurant within the main lounge, the Sutherland Room, for some quiet contemplation or perhaps a friendly game of cards and for those members and guests eager for some more competition, the snooker room features two full-size snooker tables and a dartboard. A nice patio area just outside the restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a pleasant cooling drink on a warm summer’s day.

pen Competitions

T

rentham Park is an historic golf club with a rich heritage dating back to the founding of our club in 1923. We know we have something special here and nothing gives us greater pleasure than to share the enjoyment of our magnificent course with people who may not have experienced it before.

One of the ways in which we can do this is by staging a number of open competitions throughout the year aimed at golfers from all walks of life and all abilities. The season normally starts with a Mixed Open in June, a betterball Stableford pairs event. The same popular format is employed for our Seniors Open, which tend to take place around a week or two later. Players must be 55 or over to enter. The Ladies Am Am, held in late July, features teams of three players, with the best two scores on any hole to count.

We are back to pairs betterball for the Gentlemen’s Am-Am in August, while September sees our popular Junior Golf Festival, which features prizes in three categories over 18, 12 and 7 holes, depending on the handicap of the player involved. Formats may vary slightly from year to year, but you will find details of upcoming events on our website, www.trenthamparkgolfclub. com, together with information about how you can reserve your place.

ith friendly, approachable members and staff and outstanding off-course facilities, we really feel there is nowhere better to enjoy not only your golf, but everything else that a well-rounded golf club has to offer.

Not only does the setting lend itself to some spectacular golf, it is also a pretty special place to relax as well. The club offers a social membership at a very reasonable rate and offers a busy social calendar with numerous activities organised to ensure that members are given every chance to enjoy the club’s wonderful facilities. If they can be combined with the excellence on offer from our catering team, then so much the better.

Key dates throughout the year such as Easter, Christmas and New Year’s Eve tend to be celebrated with a sit-down meal and some form of musical entertainment and the members have also been able to enjoy a range of bands and tribute acts. The club’s presentation evenings and annual dinner dance are also well-attended events which are eagerly anticipated by members. On a daily basis there is the chance to play snooker or darts in the Snooker Room or enjoy a friendly game of cards in the Sutherland Room.
