Welcome to Truro Golf Club
T
ruro Golf Club, with its mature course set in a superb landscape, was founded in 1937. In gently undulating and easy walking countryside and populated by mature trees, the course provides both a challenging test for low handicap players and enjoyable golf for all. The 18-hole, par 67, 5,339-yard parkland course is maintained in excellent condition by head greenkeeper Jim Sheehan and his team. The combination of attractively set fairways leading to some surprising slopes and borrows on slick summer greens makes for a course to delight members and visitors alike. We also have a putting green, ample parking, a practice area and tuition available with our PGA Professional. The modern clubhouse with its comfortable bar and catering facilities ensures that golfers, social members and guests get maximum enjoyment. Although only a mile from Cornwall’s attractive capital city, the beauty of the course with fine views across open countryside presents an outstanding sporting oasis. We would be delighted for you to come and experience the warm welcome guaranteed at our friendly club.

The Club History
“
A golf course for Truro?” This was the question presented to businessmen of Truro’s Chamber of Commerce. The then Chairman, Mr W. J. Kemp, led the discussion and it was resolved to form a sub-committee to progress the issue. By May 1936 a site (the present location) had been found and running costs had been estimated. Five members of the Chamber of Commerce formed a syndicate, which became known as Treliske Estates Limited and which would rent out the land to the golf club.
Tenders for the design of the course were requested and Messrs. Colt, Alison and Morrison’s plan for a 5,560-yard 18-hole course were accepted in November 1936. Once the decision had been made progress was swift. The Mayor of Truro, Mr. A. J. Roberts, cut the first turf on 18th December 1936 and on 29th April 1937 the first nine holes were completed. By December 1937 the course had grown to 18 holes. In 1939 the army requisitioned six holes for regimental purposes and a further area was taken on which to build an Italian prisoner of war camp. Success at recovering this land after the War was tempered somewhat by the need to use mine detectors to clear unexploded grenades from part of the course. By now finances were in dire straits and membership was down to 153. Undeterred, members set about reviving the club with a vengeance, running a large number of social and golfing activities to raise funds. The club flourished and in May 1947 the West Briton reported that “except for tip-top courses one could not find better fairways and greens than in Truro”. Truro Golf Club / 7

The Course
W
hat can you expect? You can look forward to a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf on a course that rewards good shots but penalises bad ones. Inevitably, given the proximity to the city of Truro, we do not have a surfeit of space. Nonetheless, the par 67, 5,339-yard, 18-hole course offers a great challenge to golfers of all standards and ages.
The many trees and shrubs extend an open invitation for wayward balls and with many fairways boasting out of bounds markers you need to ensure you play safely and sensibly. Although only just over 5,300 yards in length you will find it difficult to play to your handicap as the fairways are tight, the out of bounds plentiful and the greens small and full of character. While our course has five par 3s, each offers its own unique challenge and cannot be considered anything of a respite. Indeed, it is not uncommon for hopes of a good score to founder at one or two of our shorter holes. The beautiful views? They are there to be enjoyed, certainly, but be careful they do not distract from the job at hand!
Truro Golf Club / 9
A wonderful panorama of the course awaits you as you drive off this hole, which looks deceptively long.
Take the Course Tour
O
ver the following pages you can take the course tour, learn how to navigate and best play the course by picking up our pro’s tips on how to get the most out of your round.
Hole 1, 350 yards, par 4 No easy warm-up hole this one. A dog-leg round the prominent woods some 180 yards down the fairway calls for a brave drive with draw. In a warning of what to expect during your round, a short or poor shot is penalised with woods to the left and a bunker to the right.
10 / Truro Golf Club
Hole 2, 168 yards, par 3 The hole slopes away to the green below you, cut out of the falling ground, so a club less than the yardage suggests is advisable. Guarded by a bunker on the left and some mature conifers to the right, a straight shot is essential. Hole 3, 375 yards, par 4 A wonderful panorama of the course awaits you as you drive off this hole, which looks deceptively long. Watch out for the O.O.B. to the right. A good drive will roll to the left and offer an open shot over a gully to the green. This two-tier green slopes to the left, so play your approach shot slightly right of the hole.
Hole 4, 152 yards, par 3
Hole 6, 442 yards, par 4
A short straightforward hole but look out for the bunker in front of the green, which collects the short shot.
This is a difficult left-hand dog-leg with the ground sloping sharply to the green. Your drive needs to get you to the dog-leg to open the hole but if too long or short you are in trouble. A long iron or fairway wood is needed if you are to make the green, but beware of the slope to it which can cause the ball to run through the green - it’s not stroke index one for nothing!
Hole 5, 196 yards, par 3 The ground slopes down and to the right on this longish par-3 hole. Trees guard both left and right and there’s a long narrow green sloping to the left so make allowance. Congratulations if you chalk up three on this hole!
Truro Golf Club / 11
Take the Course Tour
(continued)
Hole 7, 400/486 yards, par 4/5
Hole 9, 159 yards, par 3
There is a lovely view from the elevated tee of this recently built par-5 hole. Play your second shot to the left side of the fairway to allow an open approach to the green, but beware of the O.O.B. behind. Aim your approach shot at the left corner.
One or two clubs more are needed than the yardage suggests on this uphill hole. The dangers of the twin bunkers guarding the green are plain to see.
Hole 8, 354 yards, par 4
Just a drive and a pitch on this hole will see you safely on the green. Avoid driving right, as you will get into difficulties amongst the trees. Watch out for the bunkers, particularly the deep bunker to the left of the green.
Don’t be tempted to try to cut off the dog-leg, particularly if there is any wind. A drive to the top of the hill opens the green nicely.
12 / Truro Golf Club
Hole 10, 309 yards, par 4
Hole 11, 328 yards, par 4
Hole 13, 343 yards, par 4
Bringing you back to the clubhouse, the 11th is an attractive and fairly level hole. A large oak to the left and a group of trees to the right (at about 170 yards from the tee) penalise a wayward drive. Aim just left of the large oak for the perfect approach.
A rather daunting drive with tress on the left and a deep hollow which drops to the O.O.B. on the right. Aim for the marker to reduce the tendency for the ball to run to the right boundary hedge. A bunker guards the green and you will be pleased to get par.
Hole 12, 319 yards, par 4
Hole 14, 210 yards, par 3
A medium or long iron is needed to get to the plateau just before the lane. Watch out for the ever-beckoning O.O.B. to the right. Bearing to the left will reward you with a nicely positioned ball for a pitch over the road onto the green. Keep an eye out for the cars using the school lane and golfers crossing to the 17th tee.
Don’t be fooled! This requires a wood or a long iron to the left corner of the green if you are to survive. Watch out for the bunker to the left and on to the right front of the green, perfectly positioned to catch the shot which is straight but not straight enough! One of our trickier greens that guarantees a par will be celebrated. Truro Golf Club / 13

Hole 15, 350 yards, par 4
Hole 17, 334 yards, par 4
This has to be played as a dog-leg as there is an internal O.O.B. to the right. Take time with your approach shot as the green is guarded by trees and long or wayward shots punished.
A good hole which tests a player’s ability to hold a drive up against the run of the ground from left to right. The difficult green is nicely situated but take care to be on the correct level of the three tiers. Watch out for players driving from the 18th tee.
Hole 16, 176 yards, par 3 Hole 18, 288 yards, par 4 Without doubt our most attractive hole with ground steeply sloping to a stream before rising to a green guarded by a deep bunker and threatening trees on the right. Don’t be fooled by the fairly modest length of this hole, as it is renowned as a graveyard of many high hopes. A pretty hole but play the shot first and admire the view afterwards.
A gentle last hole which offers little difficulty. Two fairway bunkers to the left and right penalise a short, inaccurate drive but with care you should finish with a four.

V
We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible.
isitors are warmly welcomed at the club at any time during the week and at weekends, subject to course availability. Please contact the Golf Professional prior to arrival to ensure a tee time is available to avoid clashes with members and societies.
16 / Truro Golf Club
In common with other clubs we request that visitors abide by our dress code. Standard golfing attire and proper golf shoes are required on the course and smart casual dress in the clubhouse. If you are unsure, please phone the club to check.
Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course. Our green fees are very reasonable and there are reduced rates on offer for guests of members, juniors and holders of a county card. If time is no object and you cannot get enough of your golf, it is certainly worth noting that our daily rate, which is only a few pounds more than a single round, represents excellent value.
This would enable you to enjoy 18 holes in the morning, sample the culinary delights on offer in the clubhouse by means of a snack or filling meal before going out in the afternoon to burn off those calories and right those morning wrongs helped by the additional course knowledge you had acquired. For those visiting the area on a golfing break, a weekly rate is available and our website often has offers for visiting players, such as two-for-one vouchers which can be used any day of the week excluding public holidays. Simply check available tee times by phoning the Pro Shop on 01872 276595, print off your voucher and bring it along. Participating visitors will enjoy full use of the clubhouse, bar and catering facilities. We can’t promise you’ll break par every time, but a visit to Truro will be a memorable experience that won’t break the bank.

Scott and Truro will be hoping for as long, happy and successful a partnership as was enjoyed with predecessor, Nigel Bicknell, who retired in April after a 40-year association that made him Cornwall’s longest serving golf pro.
“I’ve had a wonderful time at Truro, it’s been a great place to work,” Nigel told the West Briton upon his retirement. “The course has improved year on year because we’ve got a great greenkeeper, Jim Sheehan. And I can honestly say that I’ve never had a single problem with any of the captains over the years.” After an Am-Am held in his honour, more than 200 people packed into the clubhouse to see club president Peter Hewson make Nigel an honorary member and present him with what he had asked for – a locker and a few bottles of wine.

Since 1973, some 13 of Nigel’s junior pupils have gone on to become qualified PGA professionals. Amongst those learning the game at Truro, many have represented Cornwall at junior and senior levels and several have achieved international recognition. Scott became a Class AA PGA Professional in 2012 and his teaching embraces all standards and ages, from beginner to tournament golfer. Individuals or groups can progress in easy stages to any point judged to be the right balance between simple improvement and personal best.

“No matter what level you play the game you will never stop learning,” is Scott’s teaching philosophy. He is also very keen on training the mind to help play good golf, possessing a Diploma in Sports Psychology. Scott is one of a handful of coaches in the country to offer InnerCaddy coaching, the only structured golf psychology learning programme in the world. It can help golfers who experience one, several or all of the following: • • • • •
Fine on the range, not on the course One bad shot leads to another Too anxious at critical moments Unable to put a bad shot out of your mind Can’t play certain clubs or holes well
• • • •
Bad start ruins round Can’t play well under pressure Certain things put you off The wheels come off when going well
Conversely, if it is the physical side of the golf game that is letting you down Scott can offer focused tuition and a range of training aids. Any part of your golf game can be worked on and improved. For those struggling with a repeating swing, he offers the widely-regarded Explanar training aid. This piece of equipment allows the golfer to feel the exact path their club should be taking and commit it to memory, which is half the battle to gaining a consistent golf game.

Corporate Clients
H
ere at Truro we are delighted to offer businesses the opportunity to make use of our club and its facilities for corporate golf days or as the memorable spot for a meeting.
Tea, coffee and other refreshments can be provided, as can sandwiches and snacks, or you are welcome to choose a sit-down meal from our bar menu. To make the right impression for that product launch or to introduce your firm, why not speak to us about hosting a corporate golf day here? We will take care of the organisation so you can concentrate on your guests.
If you are looking for a change of pace for your staff and a different venue for your seminar or breakfast meeting, there is no better spot. There are lovely views looking out over the course and the clubhouse offers the perfect environment away from the office in which to conduct business.
One of our professional team would be delighted to put on a group golfing clinic and if you invest in a few prizes from the well-stocked Pro Shop to use for a few fun competitions you can be guaranteed a day that remains long in your delegates’ minds.
We have a new dedicated meeting room which can comfortably accommodate up to 30 delegates. Wi-Fi internet access is available and you are welcome to bring your own laptops to help get your point across for those important presentations.

Social Activities
W
ith excellent facilities and a sociable, friendly group of members, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the off-course benefits of being a member at Truro Golf Club.
An extensive and varied programme of social events is organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in entertainment. These social occasions range from the traditional celebrations of favourite dates in the calendar such as Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Christmas to more casual evenings such as bingo nights, poker nights, or quizzes.
The catering at Truro is exceptionally good and if there is an opportunity to celebrate an event alongside sampling the excellent fare produced by our chef, then we jump at the chance. French nights, Italian nights, steak nights, all have been enjoyed by our members in recent months. Sunday carvery lunches are always well attended by members who enjoy a succulent roast and appreciate not having to do the dishes afterwards! When the clocks go forward, it’s time to welcome back club nights on a Thursday, which feature early evening golf followed by a choice of scrumptious offerings from the specials board.

Things to Do in Truro
T
ruro could hardly be better placed if you are visiting this part of the world for the first time and are intent on enjoying some great golf and all the other things that our wonderful county of Cornwall has to offer.
44 / Truro Golf Club
Truro itself is the county town and largest settlement in Cornwall and has plenty to recommend it. We are Truro’s own parkland course located about a mile from the city centre and astride the city boundary. Our situation makes the golf convenient for holidaymakers from both coasts as well as golfers from central Cornwall. Set amongst rolling countryside the course offers magnificent views over the city and its striking cathedral. In the far distance are the white mounds of the china clay works near St. Austell, affectionately known as the ‘White Mountains’.
There are a host of glorious beaches within easy reach, offering something for everyone: sun worshippers, families, swimmers, surfers and dog walkers.
Truro Cathedral was finally completed in 1910, making it the first new cathedral in England since London’s St Paul’s. It contains a soaring highvaulted nave, some fine Victorian stained glass and the impressive Father Willis Organ. Walking the 18 holes of our picturesque course is a pleasure in itself, but if any or your party are non-golfers looking for something equally relaxing, the National Trust-owned Trelissick Gardens at Feock near to the King Harry ferry crossing, are resplendent on a sunny day.
There are a host of glorious beaches within easy reach, offering something for everyone: sun worshippers, families, swimmers, surfers and dog walkers. It does rain from time to time, even in Cornwall, but fear not, there’s plenty to do in the city, with the cathedral to explore and the Royal Cornwall Museum in River Street. Spread over two floors, it traces Cornwall’s heritage from early (pre-golfing) man to modern day.
