Welcome

Willingdon Golf Club is a private member’s club conveniently situated on the outskirts of Eastbourne, the holiday and conference centre of the South of England. Our majestic course nestles in a giant bowl alongside the South Downs and from its highest points spectacular views can be enjoyed out across the Channel and inland to East Sussex. Dating all the way back to 1898, Willingdon received a major makeover in 1925 from Dr Alister Mackenzie, the renowned golf club architect who includes Augusta National, the home of the Masters, among his other masterpieces. Measuring 6,158 yards from the competition tees, our course offers a stern but fair test to golfers of all abilities, with putting greens that run fast but true. Because it lies on chalk it drains well and play is possible throughout the year. The facilities at Willingdon are no less spectacular, with an exceptional clubhouse that provides the perfect venue for a refreshing afterround drink or filling meal and which is available to hire for functions. It is the people, though, that make our club extraordinary. Time and time again our visitors tell us that the abiding memory they take from our club is the warmth of the welcome they receive from both staff and members alike. But don’t take their word for it, we would be delighted for you to sample Willingdon for yourselves. You will not leave disappointed.

The Course and its History

The golfing boom towards the end of the 19th century spawned many new courses, including Willingdon. The history of our club really begins in 1898 when a group of local worthies, including the Marquess of Willingdon, put together a simple 9-hole layout with a corrugated iron hut as their clubhouse. This first course survived seven years or so until 1905, when the legendary J. H. Taylor was commissioned to redesign the layout to a more traditional 18 holes. Throughout the Edwardian period and into the roaring twenties the Taylor course survived until, in 1925, the celebrated Dr Alister Mackenzie, architect of the famous Augusta National, was called in to expand the layout and make more sense of the natural features of the land, and it is his course, largely unchanged, that we play today. Under his guidance a substantially new course emerged in 1925 bearing the particular hallmark of his growing genius - the twotier greens on the 8th, 9th, 12th and 18th holes. With the exception of just three holes the entire course was remodelled bringing much more of the natural contours into play. Measuring 6,158 yards from the competition tees golfers of all abilities face a stiff but fair challenge at Willingdon. At all times of the year players will find a perfectly manicured course with slick greens that are the envy of many other clubs.

The Course and its History continued

The unique layout of the course allows play to be commenced at the 1st, 9th or 15th holes which are all conveniently located near to the clubhouse. Each hole on the course has its own memorable features, none more so than the signature hole, the short par 3 5th, which has a row of railway sleepers encircling the green. Every one of the holes presents a challenge and the experienced golfer at Willingdon knows that it is brains not brawn that will be needed to help unlock the secret of a low score. At par 69 the course appears relatively easy but many a good card has been ruined by underestimating the difficulty of the challenge, particularly on the par 3 holes. Because our course sits on chalk downland we benefit greatly from the excellent drainage properties of this type of land and are rarely affected by surface water problems, no matter how heavy the rainfall. The protective ring of the South Downs also ensures that we do not suffer from the type of gale force winds that can afflict more traditional seaside courses. Our award-winning greenkeeper, Peter Negus, and his staff always strive to present a course in first class condition and in tune with the natural beauty of the surroundings. A recent independent agronomist’s report gave high commendation to the excellent quality of our fairways and greens. There is a fine quality practice putting green right in front of the clubhouse, a driving net to get rid of the cobwebs before striding confidently to the first tee and a small practice area to hone your wedge game and short irons.

Hole 1 (High Hopes) 424 yards, par 4 The opening hole is one of the most challenging on the course. Manage to avoid the fairway bunker and trees with your tee shot and you will be left with a wood or long iron into this raised green. Even the best players are happy to walk off this hole with a par. Hole 2 (Crow’s Nest) 341 yards, par 4 This hole used to be an easy par 4 until it was lengthened in 2003. Off the back tees it now needs a driver to get your tee shot over the hill and onto the flat part of the fairway. A short iron to the green may sound simple but don’t miss the green left or you won’t be making par. Hole 3 (Downside) 360 yards, par 4 Many players hit an iron or fairway wood off the tee here to make sure of hitting the fairway. Trees on the left and a grass bunker on the right mean being straight off the tee is crucial. The hole’s low stroke index of three also comes from the tricky uphill approach to a small green guarded by two bunkers.

10

Willingdon Golf Club

Hole 4 (Furlong Valley) 222 yards, par 3 One of the harder par 3s on the course, not just due to its length but also the severe penalties for any shot that leaks even slightly right. The tee and green are separated by a valley which means the tee shot is all carry. Depending on the wind this hole can play anything from a driver to a 4 iron. Hole 5 (The Sleeper) 164 yards, par 3 Willingdon’s signature hole, with railway sleepers all round the front of the green. It used to be a straightforward par 3 but then, in 2004, the white tee was relocated adding an extra 20 yards to the hole and making the angle of approach more difficult. Take enough club to clear the sleepers but don’t go long. Hole 6 (Big Dipper) 418 yards, par 4 A long tee shot is the key to the 6th, which is ranked the hardest hole because average golfers will struggle to reach the green in two. Make sure to get your tee shot far enough down the hill or your second shot will have to gamble with the cross bunkers guarding the approach to the green.

Take the Course Tour continued

Hole 7 (Deception) 179 yards, par 3 The seventh plays shorter than its yardage as it is slightly downhill but accuracy is the key. Bunkers will grab anything left, right or short of the green. A two-tier green means club selection is also important before you reach the undulating putting surface. Hole 8 (Marquess) 544 yards, par 5 A straightforward par 5, which ends up next to the clubhouse. Big hitters will get there in two but don’t lose your approach right as the clubhouse area is out of bounds. Take care with the trees lining the fairway on both sides and avoid the three bunkers protecting the two-tiered green. Hole 9 (Holmoak) 377 yards, par 4 This hole all depends on the wind. On a nice summer’s day you will be hitting driver followed by wedge. If it’s blustery expect to have a wood or long iron for your second. The woods on the right see a lot of action off the tee and the green is again two tiered and very deep so get the club selection right.

12

Willingdon Golf Club

Hole 10 (Raised Hopes) 177 yards, par 3 Club choice is key to the 10th as well. Anything lacking in distance won’t climb the front bank, while too much will end up over the back. Bunkers protect the left and right sides and the green slopes dramatically from left to right. Definitely a harder hole than the stroke index of 15 suggests. Hole 11 (Copper Beech) 374 yards, par 4 A beautiful par 4 with a slight dog leg from left to right. Avoid the dense rough on the right off the tee and you will be hitting a mid to short iron into this very deep green. Four bunkers flank the putting surface which measures 31 yards from front to back, meaning three-putting is common. Hole 12 (Mackenzie) 492 yards, par 5 The elevated tee shot crosses the previous fairway and then leaves you uphill all the way. Big hitters can get close in two but for most it’s a three-shotter. Once near the green your problems really begin as there is some seven feet in elevation between the bottom and top levels of the green.

Willingdon Golf Club

13

Take the Course Tour continued

Hole 13 (Sea View) 249 yards, par 3 The toughest par 3 on the course. Long and tricky, your tee-shot can be anything from a 6-iron to a driver and must be hit well left of the green to catch the slope. Go too far left and you’re reloading, too far right and the fairway bunkers will catch you. Hole 14 (Bridle Way) 523 yards, par 5 Out of bounds all the way down the left will always give concern if you’re going well, but get the tee shot in position and you are looking at birdie. The downhill nature of this right to left dogleg means many can reach the green in two, but be careful because 7s are as commons as 4s. Hole 15 (The Copse) 390 yards, par 4 A challenging hole worthy of its stroke index of 2. Trees on either side of the fairway make the tee shot tricky and even then the approach asks its own questions. Normally a lengthy shot, with a bank at the front of the green and bunkers left and right, finding the green is paramount.

14

Willingdon Golf Club

Hole 16 (President’s Garden) 310 yards, par 4 Another hole that offers plenty of birdies but plenty of bogeys. Hit an iron off the tee to avoid the trees and leave a 9-iron or wedge approach. Alternatively try and hit driver over the trees and cut the corner of the dogleg. This will leave a short pitch and a good birdie chance. Hole 17 (Willman Down) 187 yards, par 3 Probably the hardest green to read on the whole course gives real bite to the final par 3. Hitting across the valley with anything from a 3-iron to a 6-iron, try and keep your ball on this upturned saucer and avoid the four bunkers circling the green. Then take real care on every putt! Hole 18 (Windmill) 427 yards, par 4 Plenty of room left off the tee never stops large numbers of players from hitting out of bounds down the right. Hit the fairway here for a shorter approach but if you’re going well take your tee shot well left. Tricky bunkers protect the green so hit the putting surface or get ready for a bogey.

Tuition

Ally Mellor, the PGA Professional at Willingdon, and his team are on hand to help you get the most out of your golfing game. Whether you are a beginner wishing to take up the sport having been inspired by watching it on television, an improver in search of more consistency, or a serious player looking to take your game to the next level, tuition can help you achieve your goals. As a player who has until recently been earning his living playing competitively on both sides of the Atlantic, Ally can offer a unique insight into how the professionals tackle the game and how tips picked up on tour can help the recreational golfer. Be it driving, approach shots, bunker play or putting, Ally can provide invaluable advice on how to improve, with the use of video if required. He can also offer guidance on the mental side of the game, something the casual player would benefit from but rarely considers. You do not need to be a member of a golf club, have any previous experience of the game, or have any of your own equipment, as this can be provided for you. Lessons are available throughout the week and weekend and can be booked in person, over the phone or even by e-mail. Generally a few days notice is advisable, especially in high season, but it is permissible to book on the day where bookings allow.

Custom Fitting

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess. Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification, but unfortunately golfers are not, they come in all shapes and sizes. The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing. That is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual physique and swing characteristics. Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Willingdon and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range of products all available for custom fitting. In your 30 minute lesson with Ally, he will assess all aspects of your swing and set up and provide you with all the necessary information needed to find the perfect set of clubs for you. Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask for the average golfer to do likewise. Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to the correct impact position and better scores. Playing Sections

Willingdon prides itself on being able to offer its playing membership a whole host of competitive golf both in club competitions and across Sussex against other clubs. One of the many benefits of being a member of an historic club whose formation dates back to the 19th century is the prestigious silverware available to the winners of the club’s annual competitions. There are numerous cups and trophies enabling members to earn their own place in history and get their names on the club’s honours boards. Some of the most noteworthy competitions include the club’s handicap championship, known as the Frank Ward Cup, which is played over a weekend over July and the Dogra Cup, a foursomes competition played for by the men. This, unusually, sees a dinner at the club on the night before, followed by competition on the Sunday. The ladies, men and juniors are all eager to get their names on the Centenary Cup, which was created in 1998 to celebrate the 100th year of our formation and the Millennium Cup is another more recent piece of silverware which has been battled for since the turn of the latest century.

We are a private members’ club and the members uphold the traditions of the club while encouraging a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Dress code for the course is based on proper golfing attire. Currently the club has some 590 members of which some 99 are women and 21 are juniors. Full 7-Day membership is restricted to 320 to avoid congestion at weekends. Those in search of good company, friendly banter and a little friendly golf will find plenty to satisfy their needs. The seniors have informal roll-ups most days, the men have their Saturday Thrash and play socially on Wednesdays, while the ladies generally take to the course at around midday on Fridays, though of course members can play most any time the mood takes them. Then there is the more serious stuff. The main men’s competition day is on a Sunday, and the ladies on a Tuesday. Business ladies have a tee off slot at noon on a Sunday. Juniors are not allowed to tee off until 2pm on a Saturday, 12.30pm on a Sunday, unless they have a 12 handicap and can play in the Men’s competitions. A startsheet is in operation on a Saturday only, but members are requested to check with the Pro Shop before going out on the course. The premier county club event contested by the men is the PAV Trophy. The tournament is a matchplay team event played off scratch by teams of eight players, with the winners progressing to the next round.

For the slightly higher handicap players (above 5.4), Willingdon enters the Sussex County Inter Club Matchplay Championship. Teams consist of four pairs (eight players) who play a fourball better ball competition with the winners advancing. Each pair in each team must comprise one player from handicap category 2 (playing handicap 6-12) and one player from handicap category 3 (playing handicap 13-20). The premier inter-club event for the seniors aged 55 and over is the Cyril Blake Cup. This competition is a county-wide Foursomes Knockout event played by teams of four pairs over 18 holes on handicap. Our women enter teams in all three divisions of the Sussex County Ladies Golf Association Inter-Club Championship aimed at golfers of varying abilities (scratch, 14 or over and 21 or over handicaps respectively). After an initial league phase, the group winners progress to the knockout stages.

Juniors

Willingdon Golf Club are very keen to encourage juniors to join the club and for them to enjoy their golf and improve to the best of their ability. The benefits of golf to young people are many. It can result in the forging of new friendships, fuel a sporting passion that can last a lifetime or even bring out physical or mental attributes that have gone undiscovered. For Willingdon, we know our juniors are our senior members of the future and without them we would ultimately have no club. The Junior Section is sponsored by our Professional Shop. The club offers junior coaching for youngsters either individually or in group sessions on a Thursday evening. Just book in with the Pro Shop for a lesson. A number of junior competitions are held throughout the year. These are primarily on a Sunday at about 12.30pm, but also during the school holidays. Willingdon is also a member of the Downland League where our Junior section plays other local clubs during the summer months. Junior membership of Willingdon is open to young people under the age of 18 and at a greatly discounted rate, making it a very attractive option.

Visitors and Societies

Willingdon is delighted to welcome visiting golfers and societies to play our beautiful downland course and sample the warmth of our traditional Sussex hospitality in our luxurious clubhouse. We have a number of attractive packages for golfing societies, each named after a golfing great. Top of the range is the Seve Ballesteros, which consists of a full English breakfast, 18 holes of golf, a snack lunch, another 18 holes of golf and a three-course evening meal. For those with slightly less staying power (or those looking to reduce the day’s calorific intake somewhat!) other packages feature 18-hole and 27-hole golfing alternatives and anything from just a simple snack lunch on the catering front. The food choice is extensive and there should be something to appeal to everyone, with options available to vegetarians and those with special dietary needs. Our caterers know how to keep golfers happy and the fare is both tasty and filling. There is even the option of an evening carvery for groups of 15 or more. Society bookings (minimum number 12 players) are accepted from Tuesdays to Fridays inclusive. Most of our groups play in the early afternoon, though obviously earlier start times can be arranged for those wishing to play 36 holes. We have a number of items in the Pro Shop which will make excellent prizes for your society day and with notice we can arrange special logo or embroidered prizes with your society or club’s motif ranging from towels and caps to holdalls and suit carriers. The Clubhouse

Willingdon’s superbly-appointed clubhouse mirrors the quality of the course itself and creates the right atmosphere in which to sample the best in Sussex hospitality. The clubhouse at Willingdon has been described as the “Pearl in the Oyster”, reflecting its commanding position in the giant bowl formed by the South Downs, in which it sits somewhat like a pearl in a giant oyster shell. Skilfully and sympathetically designed, it blends in superbly with the beautiful location in which it finds itself and offers wonderful views out over the course from the higher vantage points. Sitting comfortably on a leather sofa in the Mackenzie Lounge, relaxing with a glass of something refreshing, guests can enjoy unrivalled views of the whole course and the backdrop of the South Downs whilst reflecting on rounds of golf whether good, bad or indifferent. Those who prefer the al fresco touch may choose to relax on the upstairs terrace bar, the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by. As well as the stunning upstairs bars, the downstairs Marquess Restaurant offers a smart and tastefully decorated venue for all manner of functions such as weddings, parties, meetings and conferences.

Marquess Restaurant

Willingdon is no less proud of the hospitality it is able to offer than it is of its magnificent course or wonderful facilities. Members and guests alike are able to enjoy a wide selection of food throughout the day seven days a week and they never go hungry, starting with breakfast which is generally available from around 10am. For superior one, two or three-course meals, visit the Marquess Restaurant on the ground floor which offers outstanding choice at very reasonable prices. This splendid venue is also where our golfing teams host their rivals from other clubs and where the fierce but good-natured competition on the course quickly gives way to post-match banter and where long-standing friendships are struck or rekindled. Sunday is always eagerly anticipated by the members as a special carvery is available. This has proved incredibly popular and booking is advisable. On other days, there are a host of tempting meals available on the chef’s specials board which changes daily but which can feature filling favourites like beef bourguignon or cottage pie. If time is at a premium and you just want a quick but filling snack, then these are available daily upstairs from the bar.

Social Activities

Wander into the clubhouse any day at Willingdon and ask our members why they originally joined our club and many will likely to say the appeal of playing our majestic course. Right up there alongside, however, and what gives the club an enduring, even lifelong appeal, is the warmth of the welcome given to people discovering us for the first time. There really is a wonderful camaraderie at the club, with new members quickly making new friends and being made to feel like they have belonged here all their lives. This is helped by a busy social calendar with numerous activities organised to ensure that members are given every chance to enjoy the club’s wonderful facilities. Frequent lunches to mark notable occasions such as Mother’s Day afford the opportunity to partake of the fare offered by the club’s excellent catering team, but there is much more besides including quiz nights and themed evenings. One of the highlights of the year is the club’s annual dinner dance in October, while there is always something special planned to mark the Captain’s Day in June. Guests of members are very welcome to attend these events. Christmas and New Year gatherings understandably prove to be especially popular and a special booking pamphlet is generally sent out in October to all members to reserve their places for these dates. If you would like tickets for any of the social events in our calendar then please do not hesitate to contact the Secretary (01323 410981) or the Caterer (01323 646829). Willingdon Golf Club
