Welcome

Set in the beautiful surroundings of Wimbledon Common in South West London, Wimbledon Common Golf Club looks forward to giving you a great golfing experience and a warm and friendly welcome in our clubhouse.

The Course is challenging but not too long and because the course drains so well we are lucky enough to be able to play all year round. We have some of the best greens in South East England thanks to our experienced green keepers.

Our club professional, Jeff Jukes, is a PGA professional and offers a range of golf lessons and advice on golf equipment. We have a thriving membership which is always growing as we aim to show the rest of England that there is far more sport in Wimbledon than just tennis.

Captains’ Welcomes

Club Captain – Richard Lennard It is a great privilege to have been elected as WCGC Captain for 2013. Our membership is wonderfully diverse: in age (from our extraordinary President who is 100 years old and still comes up to play three or four holes, to our youngest Junior at 13), in occupation, in background, in golfing ability – and in personality! This diversity makes Wimbledon Common Golf Club the wonderful club that it is. The club’s publicity talks about our ‘active’ senior section and our ‘active’ lady membership – the fact is we’re a very active club in all areas. In addition to our weekly competitions, there is a host of knockout events throughout the year as well as lots of social events.

6 | www.wcgc.co.uk

Lady Captain - Jane Logan I am delighted to have been elected as Lady Captain for 2013. We have an active and friendly section that caters for ladies interested in competition play and also for those who prefer to play social golf. Our diverse competitions programme includes monthly medals, pairs and singles knockout events, friendly fixtures against other local clubs, mixed pairs events and also regional and National competitions. We have a busy social diary which includes bridge afternoons, evening events and an annual summer tour. Please give me a call via the Club office if you are interested in playing on the Common; we have also just launched our Ladies Academy and more information about this can be seen on our website.

Keeping Up With the Jones’ It is a rare thing these days to find a British family-owned business, but nestled in the heart of Wimbledon sits this 87 year old company, retaining all the values and diversity of it’s owner – Ronald Geoffrey Jones. RG Jones Sound Engineering Ltd has grown up to be a market leader in AV rental and installations. The Godfather of it’s industry, it’s reputation is wellpreserved in coatings of experience, with some of the most respected names in the industry associated with it. Founded in 1926, the company started out before company names were cliché description words. In those days, you simply used your own name. The very talented RG Jones built his own loudspeakers out of wood and mounted them on the top of a van. He then hired his amplified vans out to companies selling in busy market places. It was an ingenious idea and the sound rental market was born. By 1945, the company had acquired high profile clients, and it was his loudspeakers used to amplify the celebrations on VE Day. With the rental side of the market booming, RG began to invest in his other great passion, studio sound. RG Jones Studio went on to be one of the most recognised of it’s time. This is where The Rolling Stones first

recorded in 1964, and the home of RG Jones Oak Records. The studio produced many great artists including Tom Jones, The Yardbirds, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Springfields, Englebert Humperdink, The Bee Gees to name just a few. Oak Records are now valuable collectors’ items. These days the company still retains all its genuine originality, and they boast high profile clients; some who have been with them for decades. From Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, to The Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the company continues to go from strength to strength. Now approaching its 88th year it shows no signs of resting, with the UK Athletics tours and a run of key sporting events keeping it on its toes. As the only UK Sound Company to have been awarded The Royal Warrant, the company prides itself on consistently delivering the highest standards to both the rental and permanent installations AV market. It is a brand trusted by many high profile organisations because it has proved to be unique in its field. A Great British Company with a name you can trust to deliver up to and beyond expectation.

History The Wimbledon Town Golf Club was founded at a meeting held at the Wimbledon Hill Hotel on February 20th 1908. Membership was limited to 100 residents of Wimbledon and the entrance fee and annual subscription at one guinea each. Playing was permitted by the Conservators only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Each player had to employ a caddy, a practice which continued into the 1920s. During the First World War much of the Common was taken over by the War Office. In 1919 the South London Golf Club amalgamated with WCGC. Our name became “Wimbledon Common and South London Golf Club and was simplified to Wimbledon Common Golf Club in 1928.

The 1939-45 war was a huge setback for the club. Many members left for military service and the Common was taken over by the military making the course largely unplayable. At the end of the war the pre-war green keeper was re-hired and repairs of wartime damage were slowly made to the course.

Hole-by-hole Guide

The course on the Common, which we share with London Scottish Golf Club, is the second oldest continuing golf course in England and Wales. It was first played on in 1865. So it is not surprising the greens are so good - they have had plenty of time to mature. The singlefigure handicappers from Golf Monthly played the course in our Centenary year (2008), and proclaimed the greens as being as good as 22 | www.wcgc.co.uk

any they had played that year - and they had played at some prestigious clubs. 1) Plateau – 228 yards, Par 3 Don’t think we are starting you off easy by opening our course with a par 3, which is in actuality only 22 yards short of being a par 4. To reach the green will require a long and accurate drive.

2) Hope Grant – 438 yards, Par 4 This long, straight, par 4 will ease you into the course and gives you a chance to get your swing going strong. Two good shots are required to reach the undulating green which will test even the best putter. A birdie on this hole is an extremely good achievement.

3) Nest – 284 yards, Par 4 This short par 4 is a bit of light relief after the challenging first two holes. A medium length drive will leave you with a short chip to the green and unlike the previous hole the surface on this green is flat, meaning a close enough chip leaves the strong possibility of a birdie.

4) Spinney – 171 yards, Par 3 A classic length short hole, played to a green that is only partly visible. Aim slightly more to the left from the tee’s alignment. .

5) Blockade – 278 yards, Par 4 A fairly straight forward par 4 which is another good opportunity for a birdie. Two good shots should see you reach the green but take enough club as the horse ride comes into play for the second shot.

www.wcgc.co.uk | 23

Hole-by-hole Guide Continued Hole-by-hole Guide Continued

6) Heather – 393 yards, Par 4 The generous fairway on this hole takes the pressure off the tee shot and a good second shot should get you to the green. However hitting too long could see your ball find the thick bushes which lie beyond the green, leaving a difficult third shot.

24 | www.wcgc.co.uk

7) Windmill – 327 yards, Par 4 A ravine from the tee requires a carry of around 130 yards, just to reach the fairway. There are two options, the first is to carry the ravine and leave a long second shot or alternatively hook the ball round the dog-leg - but take care to avoid the trees!

8) Elcho - 229 yards, Par 3 This is a long par 3, good practice is to aim slightly left on this left-to-right sloping green, which should hold to find the target

9) Big Ravine – 258 yards, Par 4 As the name suggests, the ravine dominates the tee shot of about 140 yards. Once cleared, you are left with a short pitch to a gathering bowl-shaped green. Don’t top your tee shot, there’s a pond in the ravine.

10) Long Butt – 314 yards, Par 4 A short Par 4 with a slight dog-leg left. A good tee shot over the tree will leave a short iron to the green.

11) Running Deer – 380 yards, Par 4. The feature of this straight Par 4 is an oak tree in the middle of the fairway, some 200 yards from the tee. A brave tee shot over the top will leave a short iron. The sensible route is a long iron placed left of the oak.

www.wcgc.co.uk | 25

Hole-by-hole Guide Continued Hole-by-hole Guide Continued

12) Queen’s Mere – 242 yards, Par 3 By far the toughest par 3 on the course; as well as being only eight yards short of a par 4 the line to the green is surrounded by trees. A long straight drive is the only way to successfully reach this green in one.

28 | www.wcgc.co.uk

13) Sand Pit – 284 yards, Par 4 A short, straight Par 4, but needs an elevated drive to clear the silver birches 50 yards in front of the tee. A testing, sloping green.

14) Paradise – 389 yards, Par 4 This hole is an utter delight to play, as the name suggest. A good tee shot leaves you with a medium iron to the green which is surrounded by Scots pines. A par on this hole is considered a very good result.

15) Birches – 289 yards, Par 4 A short Par 4 to a hollow green - not too testing. 16) Caesar’s Well – 132 yards, Par 3 The shortest Par 3 on the course, with a challenging hollow green surrounded by silver birches.

17) Caesar’s Camp – 324 yards, Par 4 A slight dog-leg right with a narrow driving area and a half blind second shot to a sloping green.

18) Long Hole – 478 yards, Par 5 Decisions are needed on the tee - two ditches, a cinder road and a bridle path have to be negotiated. A lay-up in front of the first ditch will leave about 230 yards, a genuine 3 shot hole. Go for the big drive off the tee, and if you clear all the danger, you find the green in 2.

Dress Code At Wimbledon Common Golf Club we try to steer a line between having too draconian a dress policy which may alienate younger members, or having an “anything goes” policy. Red on the Course On the course a requirement of the Conser-

vators is that all players must wear a plain pillar-box red outer garment and the Rangers, who patrol the common, are empowered to stop people playing if they contravene this rule. Red garments and waterproofs can be hired from the Club for a fee of £3 for a polo shirt and £5 for a waterproof. Please note that trainers, T-shirts, tracksuits are not accepted.

Nineteenth Hole You may wear golf clothing in the bar – dry and clean, please! Otherwise dress should be smart casual in the clubhouse - again, please, no trainers, T-shirts or tracksuits. Jeans are acceptable, provided they’re not of the scruffy variety.
