Introduction The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), will be the venue for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and was developed to take advantage of what are recognised as some of the best sailing waters on the planet. The venue provided training facilities for the 2008 Games medal winning heroes, helping an overall medal haul of 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. WPNSA was the first 2012 venue to be completed, over 3 years ahead of the games and on budget. The Academy, a not for profit company, was initially developed through a strong partnership with the South West Regional Development Agency, Sport England Lottery Fund and the local authorities. Further marine works, funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority, enhanced the venue which now fulfils International Olympic Committee requirements. Development of the Academy has provided first class facilities including; 220 metres of slipway accessible at all states of wind and tide as well as 600 dinghy spaces and 125 protected marina berths for ribs and yachts. The combination of clean winds, sheltered waters and small tidal range in the area is unique. The World Class facilities set in the centre of the Jurassic Coast, the only Natural World Heritage Site on the UK mainland, provides an unrivalled venue for training and sailing competitions. WPNSA is also committed to promoting the sustainable legacy of the games through social and environmental programmes. 7

Learning to Windsurf The OTC windsurfing school The Official Test Centre (OTC) is a purpose built centre with the clear goal to showcase the modern sport of windsurfing, and provide access to windsurfing for everyone. Housing all the major windsurfing brands under one roof, the concept of the centre is to enable its clients to test and compare the latest designs for themselves in favourable conditions. With more disciplines and brands appearing every year, the range of boards and sails available on the market has become overwhelming for many, making the decision on which board or sail to buy very complicated and confusing. Tests and reviews of windsurf kit go a long way to clarifying the situation, but ultimately there is no substitute for trying the equipment for yourself. You can test-drive a car before you decide to invest; you try clothes on to check they fit...you even smell a perfume or aftershave to see if it suits. Well now, at long last, the same opportunity to ‘try before you buy’ is available for windsurfers. With its affiliated RYA accredited windsurfing school (The Osprey Training Centre) The OTC can also teach windsurfing at every level, from the complete beginner to those wishing to hone their advanced techniques. The centre puts windsurfing firmly on the map on one of the prominent stages in the marine leisure industry today. For more information about windsurfing please contact info@otc-windsurf.com or T +44 (0)121 288 9965 21

Disabled Sailing The academy has been developed with access for all in mind. Whilst being the training base of choice for the Team GBR paralympic squad the same facilities are open to all disabled sailors. •

The site and building is fully accessible to wheelchair users with a lift at either end of the building

• All changing facilities are fully accessible whilst a special needs changing area caters for those needing additional assistance • All signage around the building is tactile and subtitled in Braille and there is a a portable induction loop for use within the building • Extra wide pontoon fingers were installed to ease wheelchair access and hydraulic hoists are situated on a number of the pontoons

25

Infrastructure for Major Events Weymouth and Portland is now the natural venue of choice for major marine events. In addition to the quality of the waters for competition, there has been an enormous investment in sailing and transport infrastructure that makes WPNSA the venue of choice for major yacht events. The Academy has 125 pontoon berths available for events and we have the opportunity to spill over into the newly constructed Portland Marina if this is required. In addition to the pontoon facilities there are deep water slipways for launching of RIBs and support boats and three boat hoists available locally ranging from 16 tonnes to 320 tonnes capacity. For the smaller keelboats, the Academy has three cranes between 2.5 tonnes and 4 tonnes capacity, so large fleets of small keelboats can be sailed on a daily dry sailing basis. The Academy provides World Class race management, so whatever the nature or size of your event we are able to provide ready made, tried and tested solutions.

26

Other Sporting Events With the outstanding facilities we have here at WPNSA we can accommodate any big sporting event. In the past we have been successful in hosting:

• The ‘BustinSkin’ Triathlon

• UK spear fishing event,

• South West Aquathon championships Biathlon

• Endurance Life Marathon

Whether your event needs access to the water for swimmers, vessels or large amounts of outside space to erect marquees the WPNSA has a flexible approach to prospective events. The large car parking areas compliment the extensive event facilities. Our physical location also makes it a great transitional centre for events that can take advantage of the stunning natural resources of Dorset. We have immediate access to the national coastal path and excellent additional outdoor pursuits on our doorstep. For enquiries into using WPNSA as your sporting venue please contact reception@wpnsa.org.uk or T +44 (0) 1305 866000 27

Legacy at WPNSA –

The Chesil Trust Programme The Chesil Trust is an independent registered charity which enables children and young people with disabilities, and those experiencing disadvantages or social exclusion to develop practical and leadership skills through the delivery of subsidised sailing training courses, ranging from introductory days through to qualification courses. These courses are delivered through schools and other organisations. Over the last 6 years, The Chesil Trust has helped well over six thousand children and young people to participate in the initial ‘Sail for £5’ introductory course, many of whom went on to further develop their skills in the certificated RYA Level 1 & 2 continuation courses. By providing access to training facilities for sailing and seamanship, The Chesil Trust works with young people including those at risk of involvement in drugs, alcohol, crime or exclusion from school, offering them new skills in teamwork and leadership, diverting them to a more constructive life and employment paths. The Trust works with Dorset’s schools to identify children and young people who would benefit from this form of training. Many are at risk of exclusion from traditional career paths because of physical disability or low educational achievement. Children taking part in the ‘Sail for £5’ Chesil Trust Programme have the opportunity to try sailing in the same location where Team GB train and where the four GB gold medalists trained prior to Beijing 2008. Legends such as Ben Ainslie, Sarah Dempsey and Iain Percy have all trained at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and understand the importance of inspiring new generations into the sport of sailing. The Trust relies entirely on voluntary contributions for its funding. If you can help, please contact: Nichola Lane, The Clerk to the Chesil Trust, PO Box 2341, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 9YZ.

Green Credentials WPNSA has a commitment to stewardship of the environment and has been described by Natural England as ‘an example of best practice’. We have recently achieved the Sustainable Event Certification (BS 8901), a management system standard designed to help organisations in the events industry improve the sustainability of their event related activities, products and services. The building was designed to be energy efficient and working closely with SSE Energy, the Academy has built on this, with between 13 -15% of its energy needs currently generated by photovoltaic cells, harnessing solar power. Further photovoltaic arrays are planned to bring the Academy up to its target of generating 20% of its electricity needs by 2012. In addition to this, there is also the recovery of ‘grey water’ from the roof for boat washing, an active recycling programme, recently extended to include old sails and batteries as well as the installation of motion-sensitive lights throughout the complex. Marine litter is also taken seriously, last year a Marine Litter Summit in conjunction with the Dorset Coast Forum was hosted on site to highlight the issue and enforce strict policies at the site. The venue, in conjunction with SSE won the 2008 Sport Industry Award for ‘Environmental Concern in Sport’. In 2009 the WPNSA won the International Olympic Committee recognised architectural award ‘the IPC/IAKS Distinction for Accessibility’ for excellent disabled access.

Testimonials “I just wanted to thank you, the Academy and in particular the Race Officer for yet another superb event this weekend. Organisation both on and off the water were first class, and the little touches, the oranges and chocolate, were much appreciated by the sailors as was the wine donated for the first three places. As briefly discussed we would love to come back for 2011 and 2012 if you can find a weekend free for us, the same time of year would be ideal to avoid clashing with our other major events. Once again on behalf of the Class a very big thank you to you and your team.” Mike Ball – Solo Association “We’ve had an absolutely FANTASTIC weekend at WPNSA/SailLaser Weymouth. Our customers/competitors have had a brilliant weekend and I think it’s true to say that everybody left with a smile on their face yesterday afternoon. I’m not sure if you heard your thank you at the Prize Giving yesterday, as I’m sure you were sorting out the Laser Class results. BUT, there was a very heartfelt thank you for all of your work. 2011 & 2012. Please could you let me have a list of available dates for events (Sat & Sun) for 2011 and 2012. We really need to follow up with the competitors with another event in 2011 to grow the momentum of this event.” Katie Ashworth Marketing Manager, LaserPerformance Europe Ltd “I know that I thanked all concerned last evening but can I ask that you forward this mail to all thanking them for their help and time. Without their help we couldn’t enjoy the level of sailing we have. Thought race management, course setting and layout movement was very good. Facilities as always very good. Best wishes to you all, we really do appreciate your regatta and the standard it sets.” Jerry Otter – Farr 45 Class Chairman “I will be sending out formal letters of appreciation in due course, but this is just a brief note to put on record my huge thanks to you both for facilitating and running an excellent Burton Event for the National 12 Class over the Bank Holiday weekend Feedback from all those who participated has been unanimously positive as was clearly evident at the final prizegiving on Tuesday afternoon.” Tim Gatti National 12 Class Chairman. “Everything was fantastic!! Amazing! Thankyou so much to everyone!” Fiona Penny – Charity Ball Organiser “Friday 6 November went extremely well. The food was good and the staff were wonderful - everything was served and cleared away with alacrity, windows opened when life got heated, wine and water appeared when needed. So generally everything was great. Thank you so much. The band, Pondlife, was very good. I thought perfect for our occasion. They had a jazz funk feel to some of their numbers which made them pretty sophisticated. The floor was constantly covered with dancers, which is what we wanted. Mainly, our crowd is in their 30’s to much much older! Some members wanted a couple of ballroom numbers, but that was not really in the band’s repertoire, also they were the minority of club members - the rest of us just want to bop meaninglessly round the floor! Thanks again to you and your team.” Hazel Shaw – Function Organiser 45
