Welcome Worthing RFC is the premier rugby club in the whole of the South East of England and a focal point of the local community in the Worthing area. We are the home of the Raiders, who rank among England’s top 50 premier rugby teams, while at the same time offering a friendly and welcoming environment to all those who want to play, coach or watch rugby, whatever their age or ability. A Centre of Excellence for Sussex Rugby, Worthing runs teams from under-7s right up to elite level and has thriving women’s and girls’ sections. A true year-round rugby venue, we also host prestigious Sevens events and Summer Touch Rugby which both take centre stage when our league season is over. We are lucky to have one of the most picturesque grounds in the South of England, with 6 pitches on 23 acres at the foot of the South Downs in Angmering. The idyllic location, its vast size, accompanying large car parks and the club’s modern clubhouse makes us the natural choice to host many local events. The clubhouse is the perfect venue for corporate meetings, conferences or training, flexible enough to divide into several smaller rooms or one large setting, depending on the event. We are a favourite venue for weddings and other special occasions such as birthday and retirement parties, where we can tailor a personalised package to exactly fit your needs and your budget. Please pay us a visit soon and see all that Worthing RFC has to offer. A warm welcome is guaranteed.

A Brief History

W

orthing Rugby Club was formed by a group of local sportsmen meeting at York House on 10 September 1920. These rugby enthusiasts had no ground or equipment, and initially borrowed a field from a local farmer which was off Wallace Avenue in West Worthing before moving to the Rotary Ground at Broadwater. Facilities were again basic, with the Cricketers Arms being used for changing. In the 1924-25 season the club moved to Rugby Road. This was the club’s home for the next three years until a six-acre site was purchased in Castle Road, Tarring, in 1927. A purpose-built clubhouse – very modern for its day – was erected and this building was considerably extended over the years. The original club colours were green and white stripes, which were also sported by Guildford. The choice of the present royal blue with chocolate and gold hoops was made in 1927. The scheme is an amalgamation of the colours of Dulwich, Mill Hill and Cranleigh where many of the team members had been to school.

We now provide up to six pitches, and have two floodlit pitches with TV quality floodlighting on one of them. The clubhouse has been extended with the aid of a lottery grant, enabling us to establish women’s rugby, and add many new facilities. In 1939 the ground was closed and requisitioned for grazing, and later as a billet for Canadian troops. In 1946 the ground re-opened and the club played its rugby there for the next 30 years. During the 1970s with the growth in Junior and Mini Rugby, it was apparent that larger facilities were needed. In 1977 the club moved to its present location in Angmering, and the ground was officially opened in 1979 by Dickie Jeeps, the former England international and then Chairman of the Sports Council. One of the other local rugby clubs in the sport’s formative years was the Old Azurians Rugby Football Club, which was formed in 1927 by former pupils of Worthing High School for Boys. The club opened up membership to all-comers in the 1970s and dropped the Old prefix, becoming known simply as the Azurians. In 1989 the Azurians amalgamated with Worthing RFC, which still benefits from an active number of OAs in its ranks.

We now provide up to six pitches, and have two floodlit pitches with TV quality floodlighting on one of them. The clubhouse has been extended with the aid of a lottery grant, enabling us to establish women’s rugby, and add many new facilities. Worthing RFC has progressed significantly, and now offers first class rugby facilities, which have earned us the designation Centre of Excellence for Sussex Rugby. We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings in a farmer’s field near the seafront!

Our Teams

M

ale or female, veteran or child, international hopeful or beginner - whatever the standard of your game Worthing Rugby Club has a side for you, your partner or your children.

Pride of place goes to our men’s 1st XV, known as the Worthing Raiders, who play in National League 2 South, effectively the fourth division of English rugby, only three tiers below the likes of Premiership elite sides such as Harlequins and Leicester. Our level 4 status makes us the top-ranked club in the county, two levels higher than any other club in Sussex. Home match days are always a special occasion, with a large crowd gathering to watch the 1st XV in action. The atmosphere at Roundstone Lane is electric for the really big games and some matches last long in the memory, none more so than when the club took the unbeaten scalp of league leaders Richmond in 2012. The elite squad has done the club proud in recent years and the quality of rugby and the progression through the league structure is indication that standards continue to improve. The coaching team for the entire elite squad is of the highest standard featuring former International players and experienced specialist coaches. There are not many clubs at our level who can look at the current England International squad and remember with fondness that two of their number played with honour and distinction in the shirt of Worthing RFC. Joe Marler made his international debut on England’s tour to South Africa in the summer of 2012, while Joe Launchbury, another Sussex Colt, has also represented his country. The two Joes now play elite Premiership rugby for Harlequins and London Wasps, respectively, proving that playing for Worthing really can provide a route through to the highest echelons of Club rugby. It is hard to feel anything other than immense pride to visit the RFU website, click on the profile of England prop Joe Marler and read “his favourite ground is Roundstone Lane, the home of Worthing RFC, for whom he also played.” The Second XV plays in Division Two of the RugbyTech shield, a 12 team division for clubs across the South East.

This league was set up to provide its member clubs with challenging, competitive matches throughout the season. Quality Second XV rugby is an essential part of the overall structure of the modern rugby club and ensures that anyone with the ultimate ambition of playing for the Firsts does not find there is a huge gulf in standard which they cannot hope to overcome. The Second XV came close to glory in 2011-12, narrowly losing to Chichester in the final of the Sussex Bowl. Our Fourth and Fifth teams found themselves in the same division last season, Sussex 3 West. It meant for some banter and some increased friendly rivalry in the clubhouse, especially when both sides played each other under floodlights for the first time in their league fixture in January. The Fourths built on their success of 2011, when they were winners of the Sussex Vase, and ran away with the league. Earning promotion will bring with it the chance to test their game at the next level, even though it will mean no repeat of their league tussles with the Fifths. In addition, the Club has a Ladies’ team, teams for every youth age group from under-7s to under-18s and two girls’ sides for under-15s and under-18s.

Women’s Rugby

W

orthing RFC has a thriving women’s section, with a senior team as well as under-15 and under-18 sides.

The senior team plays league fixtures throughout the season in RFUW National Challenge South East South Division 2, which consists of clubs from Kent and Sussex. Competition is fierce but very enjoyable and while it is always nice to taste success, there is always a mutual respect between the two teams, as can be witnessed by the camaraderie in the clubhouse afterwards. One of the leading clubs in the county, Worthing invariably has several players selected for the Sussex and South East England squad. One of our success stories is Amy Wilson-Hardy, who played rugby at Worthing for many years, being selected for the county and regional teams before making the England Squad at centre. Amy, who now plays for Bristol, says: “Worthing RFC fired my enthusiasm for the game and played a huge part in getting me to where I am now!” We aim to make rugby fun for girls between the ages of 12 and 18 and enable them to play at the highest level they can achieve. Amy is a shining example of what is possible, though equal support and encouragement is given to those who just want to enjoy the sport and a team environment at grass-roots level.

Youth Rugby

W

orthing has one of the best youth rugby set-ups across the whole of the south of England and is the perfect place for young people to learn the game and to grow both as players and individuals. We run sides at every age level from under-5s right up to under-18s allowing a structured progression right from the early school age through to young adults. The club also hosts rugby camps throughout the year, at half-term, Easter and during the summer holiday. It is always exciting to see the younger sides doing well, they represent the lifeblood of the club, show that it is doing well and that there is plenty of optimism for the future.

The under-18 Colts team won the Sussex Colts league in 2011-12 and also progressed through to the last 16 of the national Colts U19s’ Cup, claiming some notable scalps along the way. One of our youngest age groups, the under-7s, were equally successful, claiming the county title after beating Lewes in a match-up between the champions of East and West Sussex. Parents can be reassured that their children are in good hands with the club having gained the Mini and Youth Seal of Approval and being part of the nationally-recognised Sport England Clubmark accreditation scheme. The awards are based upon a three-year rolling system in which the club is assessed on its continuing ability to provide a safe, effective, child-friendly club environment.

Personal Development

H

ere at Worthing RFC we pride ourselves on being able to offer a quality rugby experience regardless of the level played.

With an experienced, knowledgeable and talented team working behind the scenes there is a system in place to allow you to grow as a player or coach. Whatever the ambition of the individual, be it simply to enjoy a fun family sport in a relaxed and safe environment, representing the club at the highest level, or anything in between, we are here to help. The club aims to develop rugby within the club and local community by means of several initiatives. These include:

• • • • •

Improving the standard of youth rugby coaching in our community. Increasing the participation in rugby at school and club. Providing access to a sport which caters for all shapes and sizes. Improving fitness and lifestyle opportunities for young people. Introducing self discipline, fair play, a strong team ethic and fun.

With an experienced, knowledgeable and talented team working behind the scenes there is a system in place to allow you to grow as a player or coach. So why rugby? Unlike many other sports, it can accommodate all physical specimens with roles for individuals to make the most of their particular attributes, whether it be speed, strength or tactical awareness. There are many other good reasons, here are just six of the most compelling: • • • • •

Playing rugby is great fun. You make many friends both on and off the pitch. Girls play and enjoy rugby – it’s not just a game for boys! Leagues, festivals and tournaments enable you to measure your skills. Everyone has a job to do in the game. Everyone is important.

• You can play at school and at Worthing RFC.

To really like playing rugby, you have to understand what your job is in the team, be coached to perform it well, and be fit enough to enjoy doing it. The development programme will help with your fitness, but is more about bringing out a player’s inherent skills, and enabling them to perform at their best in a team environment

Worthing RFC - 15

Various opportunities supported by the club exist for local school pupils and college students to experience the game. These include: • High quality coaching. • Rugby available for all young people at High School. • Play in Worthing Schools Rugby Association and Sussex representative squads. • Obtain an NVQ Rugby qualification through Worthing College and the Worthing RFC Rugby Academy. Within the club environment there is the chance to grow yet further, surrounded by people who have an infectious enthusiasm for the game which can only rub off on those around them. Worthing RFC aims to provide an environment that supports young people as they develop by: • Encouraging participation, self-esteem and a positive approach to healthy living. • Seeking to instil a sense of responsibility and respect for each other, the opposition, and the referee. • Providing a centre for excellence: first rate facilities and coaching help to bring about individual progress. • Offering a safe and supportive environment in which all can learn and grow as people and as players. Want to know more? For further details and assistance contact the appropriate age group manager (there is a full list of contacts on the club’s website, www. worthingrfc.com). Age groups are based on the player’s age on September 1. So if your are aged eight on that date you are an under-9 player.

Apprenticeship Scheme Leads the Way

W

orthing RFC is proud to have launched a ground-breaking apprentice scheme in partnership with Worthing College which is already being hailed as a huge success.

The scheme, which was the brainchild of Worthing RFC Chairman, Brian Vincent, and Paul Cox, Director of Sport at Worthing College, offers young students a way of gaining valuable paid experience in the workplace, as well as NVQ qualifications. It also benefits children and the local community by taking the game of rugby into schools who might otherwise have missed out on the sport. “In many junior schools there is an appetite to introduce noncontact rugby to children, with the benefits of cardio-exercise, plus improved co-ordination and movement,” Mr Vincent explains. “By secondary school age, rugby is part of the sport curriculum for students. Unfortunately there is a shortage of staff trained to teach it. “Worthing College is now ranked in the top ten sports colleges in the country and many of our young players have attended the college over the years. With the growing issues for those students unable to continue to university due to rising costs and a shortage of employment opportunities, we wanted to find a way of helping all parties.

“Together with the college we developed the Community Rugby Sports Coach apprenticeship scheme. It enables students to gain professional qualifications and learn important work-based skills” “Together with the college we developed the Community Rugby Sports Coach apprenticeship scheme. It enables students to gain professional qualifications, learn important work-based skills, support schools in delivering rugby coaching to a higher standard and support the Club in the promotion and exposure to our local community of rugby and its core values of discipline, enjoyment, teamwork, respect and sportsmanship.” A pilot scheme has been running since October 2011, training three apprentices. A number of schools have participated in the scheme which has been a great success. Plans are now well underway to provide more apprentices and to continue to expand the scheme into more schools and multiple year groups – providing thousands of children the opportunity to experience rugby and its unique values.

“Of course, the apprentices are employed by the Club and are paid,” Mr Vincent adds. “As an amateur sports Club we simply could not have got the scheme off the ground without the help of our sponsors who have really seen the value in what we’re doing, taking rugby into schools and giving young students a bit more of a chance in life.” Ultimately, the scheme wants to expand to 12 apprentices to reach as many local children as possible. However, funds are needed to do so and sponsors are currently being sought. If you are interested in sponsoring this scheme, please contact the Club’s Commercial Manager, Kelly O’Haire, via Kelly@worthingrfc.com

Respect and the Code of Rugby

R

ugby is a wonderful sport in which to be involved and instils so many magnificent qualities in the people connected with it.

There is tremendous respect between team-mates, supporters and players from opposing clubs and nowhere can this be seen more graphically than at the end of a match, where no matter how bruising the encounter, players who have given their all line up to applaud their opponents off the pitch. You can learn so much about yourself just by experiencing what rugby has to offer. Worthing Rugby Club is a wholehearted supporter of the Rugby Football Union’s Code of Rugby. This mission statement states that everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.

RFU Code of Rugby Teamwork • Respect • Enjoyment Discipline • Sportsmanship

Play to win - but not at all cost

Win with dignity, lose with grace

Observe the Laws and regulations of the game

Respect opponents, referees and all participants

Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs

Value volunteers and paid officials alike

Festivals

A

s part of our commitment to growing the game and hopefully inspiring a new generation of players, Worthing RFC hosts several rugby festivals throughout the spring.

Not only are these excellent family days out, they give players the chance to experience some competitive action against their peers from across the county and even further afield. It is our belief that providing a fair and competitive playing environment, for all boys and girls, is vital to the development of rugby football. It is by instilling a passion for the game in a whole new generation of players that a club moves forward and creates a healthy and sustainable platform for the future.

The festival season at Worthing generally kicks off on a Sunday in early March with a tournament for players aged seven to 12. The Worthing Minis tournament will be held for a 37th consecutive year in 2013. April also sees a Junior 7s festival for boys aged 13-18, while girls aged between 12 and 18 get their chance at the Girls 10s, generally held in early May. Details of all our festival dates can be found on the club website, www.worthingrfc.com. Come down on the day and have a look, it always makes for quite a spectacle and you might perhaps spot some international stars of the future!

Sevens Rugby

T

wo expressions sum up very well the philosophy of those driving Worthing Rugby Club forward – ground-breaking and all-inclusive.

We are keen to grow the game of rugby and introduce it to as many people as possible in the hope and firm belief they will develop the same passion for the game as we do. We were the first club in Britain to see the possibilities for Mini Rugby and are equally excited by the development of Sevens rugby, which is a faster-paced game which is exciting both to play and to watch. Many international players refined their game on the Sevens circuit, one of the most notable being former New Zealand winger Jonah Lomu. And while those who have grown up consumed by the 15-a-side game can use the smaller format to improve their running and passing skills, Sevens opens up another avenue to people wishing to become involved in the sport we all love. For more than a decade, the end of May has been synonymous with the Worthing Sevens, a really popular event signalling the end of one season and the beginning of the next and one which has grown into the largest tournament of its size in Sussex. Continue on page 25

Worthing RFC - 25

Sevens Rugby (continued) But in May 2012, Sevens became even bigger in Worthing when the club hosted its very first tournament of the Super Sevens Series, the second leg of a national series looking to showcase Sevens across the country. Eagerly anticipated, it was the most prestigious rugby tournament Worthing had ever seen, featuring the most professional rugby players ever to play in the town. Some 16 teams were in action at Roundstone Lane hoping to land a share of the £7,000 prize money and there were also appearances from both the Holland and Nigeria national teams. Worthing chairman Brian Vincent said: “Being chosen to host the Super Sevens is a huge honour for Worthing Rugby Club.

“There are over 2,500 rugby clubs in England and only four get to display the fabulous standard that the Super Sevens brings to their local communities.” “There are over 2,500 rugby clubs in England and only four get to display the fabulous standard that the Super Sevens brings to their local communities.” Combining the Super Sevens Series on the Saturday with the Worthing Sevens on the Sunday proved to be a real winner, bringing a feast of entertaining festival rugby to the people of Worthing. It was a real fun family weekend out and one which the club very much hopes to repeat in 2013. Keep checking the Worthing RFC website and as soon as we have any news you will know it too.

Summer Touch

T

he Worthing Summer Touch league provides members of the rugby club and the wider community with a ‘fun’ activity for both beginners and experienced rugby players over the summer months. Touch rugby is a fast moving, minimal contact, evasive game that is played throughout the world by men and women of all ages and skill levels. The game is similar to rugby but without the tackling, scrummaging, rucking, mauling, lineouts and kicking. For the younger players, a similar game using tag belts and no contact is played. We run three leagues, for men’s teams, mixed teams and families - on Wednesday nights, starting with registration in early May and running every week through until July which sees the season end with a hugely-anticipated finals and family fun day.

We run three leagues, for men’s teams, mixed teams and families - on Wednesday nights, starting with registration in early May and running every week through until July. Teams comprise 12 registered players, with a maximum six players being allowed on the pitch at any one time in the men’s and mixed games. Touch rugby is played in both these formats and in the mixed game at least two of the players must be female. It is slightly different in the family games. Here it is teams of seven-a-side playing tag rugby. Only two of the players on the pitch can be over 14, with the league being designed for the younger ages. Adults are encouraged to participate to assist with the flow of the game and to help the younger players. All matches are ten minutes each way with continuous rolling substitutions permitted. It really is a fun and enjoyable way to get fit, improve rugby skills and learn the values of teamwork.

he clubhouse is the social centre of the club and has been developed in recent years to provide an excellent facility in which we take great pride and which creates the right impression when welcoming visitors to Roundstone Lane.

Downstairs can be found the well-appointed men’s and women’s changing rooms as well as the treatment room, home to our top team of physios who look after the players with dedication and expertise and help to get them back into action as quickly as possible. Upstairs is the large social area and lounge, a versatile space equally well suited as the place for a quiet drink or two, to grab a snack or something more substantial to eat or as the venue for that special occasion. The clubhouse is a hive of activity on match days, hosting sit-down lunches before Raiders’ home games, and has a balcony overlooking the pitch which is a popular spot for watching the action. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of beers, wines, and spirits and a choice of soft drinks. We have four large screen televisions, which are perfect for watching the major rugby internationals with friends and team-mates. The atmosphere is the next best thing to actually being there!

At the Heart of the Community

W

orthing RFC is not only about taking to the field on a Saturday or Sunday and representing the club to the best of one’s ability.

With so many adults and children around the town playing or watching rugby each week or making use of our extensive facilities, we realise that the Club is very much at the heart of the community. With this comes responsibility and it is one we do not take lightly. Because we are major focal point in the lives of so many people in the town, it gives us the opportunity to be able to give something back and it is one which we embrace wholeheartedly. Worthing RFC supports many good causes throughout the year, not just because we care, but because often these are causes that are close to the hearts of someone at the club and because we like to make a difference. Just one example of our work comes on Ladies Day, one of our major charity fund-raising events of the year and one which was again a resounding success in 2012. More than 200 ladies enjoyed a wonderful day, which featured lunch, pampering and a fashion show held in a marquee at the club. Ladies then ventured pitchside to watch the First XV in action, then it was back to the marquee for supper, usic featuring a DJ, live band and a very popular charity auction. Some ÂŁ3,000 was raised on the day for two very good causes, Macmillan Cancer Support and Ferring Country Centre.

Social Activities

W

orthing is very much a family-orientated club, you only have to walk down to Roundstone Lane on a weekend morning or afternoon to appreciate this when you see all the different age groups enjoying their sport. Equally, there is plenty to do off the pitch as well with a full and varied social calendar available to members throughout the year. Here you will really find what a friendly and fun-loving group of people the members at Worthing Rugby Club really are. As well as the traditional end-of-season awards evenings for the respective rugby sections, there are family events such as Easter egg hunts or family fun days with rides, a bouncy castle and loads of other things to keep the youngsters amused. We enjoy playing rugby, but we love watching it to, and unless we are hosting a function (or the members are in action themselves) you will find many of them enjoying the experience of watching the major rugby internationals on the big screen in our clubhouse alongside friends and with a pint in their hands. Major dates in the calendar such as New Year’s Eve and St Patrick’s Day are celebrated with gusto, there is a fireworks party for the youth section in the run-up to Bonfire Night and it’s fun to try and guess who’s under some of the gruesome costumes that come out of the closet for our Hallowe’en Party! With sit-down lunches prior to home league matches for the Raiders and a regular Comedy Night too, there really is something for everyone.

The 500 Club

W

orthing RFC has been running a 500 Club since 2010. The Club gives members the chance to win considerable cash prizes and also raises money for much needed works around the Club. In only two seasons, the Club has given in excess of £10,000 in prizes and a substantial amount has been donated to the Club to aid with much-needed improvement works. This has enabled repairs to our main gate, patch repairs to the car park, markings for dedicated disabled parking spaces, the re-siting of the Club offices/shop and even the purchase of modern line marking equipment to replacement our ailing and failing whitewash dispenser!

All this would not have been possible without the continuing support of the 500 Club subscribers. Much more is needed and desired for the benefit of all members of the club, so please add your support and purchase a number or two for the monthly draws – forms are available on the club’s website, www.worthingrfc.co.uk, and at the Club.

How to Find & Contact Us Worthing Rugby Club is situated just off the A259, in Angmering, between Worthing and Littlehampton. For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is BN16 4AX.

Directions From the North

It is better to head south on the A24 rather than the A23, as you can then avoid the traffic congestion around Worthing. A few miles north of Worthing, at Findon, turn right at a roundabout onto the A280 towards Littlehampton. After two miles go straight on at the first roundabout and over the A27. At the roundabout on the other side of the bridge take the 3rd exit which is still the A280 towards Littlehampton. After a mile turn right at a roundabout on to the A259 towards Littlehampton. In 200 metres turn right at the mini roundabout by the Roundstone pub into Roundstone Lane. At the next mini roundabout take the 2nd exit (straight on) and the club is on the right.

From the West

Follow the A27 through Arundel before exiting at the turn-off for the A280. Cross over the A27 heading south and take the 3rd exit off the roundabout on the other side of the bridge before picking up the directions above.

From the East

Take the A27 through Worthing. A mile after the road becomes dual carriageway again take the first exit signed for the A280 to Littlehampton. At the end of the slip road take the 2nd exit off the roundabout - which is the A280 – before picking up the directions in the first paragraph.

Public Transport

The nearest station is at Angmering, which is just under a mile away. Frequent trains run east to Brighton and west to Worthing, Chichester and Portsmouth. Local bus services run frequently along the A259.

We look forward to welcoming you to Worthing Rugby Club. If you have any questions or would like further information then please do not hesitate to contact us.
