Founded in 1892, Weston-super-Mare Golf Club is an historic club with a magnificent course considered to be one of the best in the South West. Our fine layout was designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the famed golf course architect who includes Augusta and Pebble Beach among his wonderful works. The natural features and contours together with the artfully-placed bunkers of a classic MacKenzie course provide a test for low and higher handicappers alike; whilst the elements mean the golfer can be presented with a different challenge each and every round. The greens are particularly worthy of mention, giving a true roll all year round. We are proud of our reputation as a friendly club and visiting golfers can expect a warm welcome in our spacious clubhouse, where a well-stocked bar and first class homecooked food provide a perfect accompaniment to your round of golf. Tuition is available both indoors and on our practice ground from our Professionals, Mike LaBand and Ben Lock, featuring the latest technology to help improve your game; whilst all your everyday golfing needs can be taken care of in our branded Professional Shop. We welcome applications from new members and have a thriving Junior section, having received High Achiever status in England Golf’s highly-regarded GolfMark scheme. The course and its facilities are available to visitors throughout the year and we are a favourite destination for golfing societies. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Weston-super-Mare for what we are sure will be a memorable visit.

be formed second to none in the world. There are a number of natural hazards and the turf throughout is of excellent quality.” Queen Victoria was on the throne and Gladstone was Prime Minister when the first steps were taken to form Westonsuper-Mare Golf Club. The first recorded evidence of the formation is in the proceedings of a public meeting held at the Grand Atlantic Hotel on 4th July 1892. At that meeting the Chairman, Sir Richard Paget (Member of Parliament for the Wells Division) said in his opening remarks that he had no doubt that a golf club would be of general advantage to Weston. He advised that land owned by Mr R B Graves-Knyfton had been inspected and would prove admirably suited for the links. The report written by Tom Dunne, a man of great experience in laying out links, stated: “that on the land situated between the Royal Sanatorium and Slimridge Farm, a Golf Links may

A separate ladies’ links was prepared on the ground which today occupies the 12th and 18th holes. The first clubhouse was at 24 Moorland Road, a house situated only a few yards from the Club entrance. The first golf was played on 1st August 1892 and the official opening took place a month later. By far the most important happening for the Club came in 1896 when it was agreed to convert the then nine-hole course to 18 holes. The first proper clubhouse was erected in 1905 at the north-west corner of the links on the site which had been the 18th green.

During the following years many changes took place to the layout of the original course. Most notable was the work undertaken by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1922 who, for a fee of £1,000, altered and modernised the course, turning it very much into the layout currently enjoyed. Even today MacKenzie is recognised as one of the great golf course architects and among his most famous designs are Fulford, Moortown and Royal St Georges in the UK and Pebble Beach and Augusta National in the US. * This excerpt is taken from the Centenary Book written and compiled by the late Maurie Exton, a former Captain and President of the Club.

The Club took another significant step in 1905 by appointing a full-time paid Secretary, Mr Bob Riddell, who was to remain in office for 40 years. This was the first time a paid Secretary had been appointed to any golf club in England.

om

So what makes a course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie special? His work is unmistakable and tries to adhere to a certain list of golfing dos and don’ts in order to achieve the optimum golfing challenge. He believed: • courses should be arranged in two loops of 9 holes to create different wind conditions throughout the round

t of the NHS ur NHS services

• they should have a mix of long par fours, drive and pitch holes and at least four par threes to create variety in the type of shots during any round • the greens and fairways should be undulating, without steep hills for the golfer to climb • there should be a minimum of blind approach shots • the emphasis should be placed on natural beauty

• there is always an alternative route for the weaker player, yet a sufficient test for the plus-handicap player • there should be a complete absence of the annoyance caused by searching for lost balls MacKenzie tried to create excitement in a round but he always provided options for every class of golfer and always gave a chance to recover after a missed shot. He welcomed those who embraced golf with a spirit of adventure.

10 \ Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club

Weston-super-Mare Golf Club is an attractive links course situated at the southern end of Weston Bay, with superb views across the Bristol Channel, past Brean Down, Steep Holm and Flat Holm towards Cardiff. The course is an easy walk, with generous fairways and the wind often playing a decisive role in whether or not one makes a good score. The overall impression when playing the course is of wide horizons and masses of sky. In summer the greens are fast and true; the fairways tight and the rough punishing. In winter the course is rarely closed and is always played off real tees. Temporary greens are used occasionally when hard frosts prevail. The course measures 6,245 yards (par 70) from the white championship tees, with five par 3s and three par 5s.

The signature hole is the 15th, a 458-yard par 4 which is reputably modelled on the famous Road Hole at St Andrews Old Course. It has a blind tee shot and out of bounds down the right, and the green set at an angle to the treacherous bunker at the front corner so par is always a satisfying score here.

shots still often run off the edges. So to score well a really good variety of short game and solid putting is needed round Weston, but you don’t have to be a long hitter.”

The finishing four holes are particularly difficult and mean that no leader can feel safe in either strokeplay or matchplay competition. Following the 15th, the long par-three 16th is played directly into the prevailing wind. The 17th is a risk-and-reward dog-leg par five; whilst many a card has been wrecked by the out of bounds down the last, a long and testing par 4. What type of golfer fares best around the links of Weston-super-Mare? Who better to ask than the Club’s Professional, Mike LaBand. “You’d probably need to keep your driver in your bag on a few of the holes,” Mike says. “It’s all about the short game. Most of our greens can get incredibly fast in the summer and the greens are mostly hogs backs and throw the ball off direction, so quite good

ake the Course Tour

If you have never played Weston-superMare before you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Mike LaBand, our PGA teaching professional. Hole 1 (The Ridge) 355 yards, par 4 Not a particularly testing drive but the hole is so called because of a rise in the ground at about the limit of the average player’s

12 \ Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club

drive. The long hitters, in all but the most adverse conditions, drive over the ridge. The second shot is more demanding with dunes on the right and a bunker to the left of the green. Hole 2 (Buckthorn), 374 yards, par 4 Along the entire right of the hole is buckthorn growing in the dunes. With the prevailing wind off the right it is necessary to drive towards the trouble or risk being bunkered in a fairway trap at about two hundred yards on the left. The green is bunkered to the right so it is best to go straight for the flag and if you do err, do it to the left from where there is a fairly easy chip and run.

Hole 3 (Lundy) 154 yards, par 3 So called because, although the Island of Lundy cannot be seen, it is the direction in which to aim when the prevailing wind is blowing. The penalty for missing right is not as great as it was with the buckthorn now removed and often a shot to the right gets a favourable kick on to the green. To miss left leaves a very tricky pitch or chip. Hole 4 (Dry Stone) 363 yards, par 4 If the wind is more to the north it can be wise to club down as a well-hit drive may land in a dry ditch in front of a wall across the fairway. The second is not a long shot but to miss right may lead to trouble; whilst on the left it is often possible to putt from just off the green.

Hole 5 (Brean Down) 411 yards, par 4 For the first time it is possible to view the Atlantic Ocean (or is it the Severn Estuary?), South Wales and the peninsula of Brean Down. To have a chance of getting home in two a long accurate drive is needed. A bunker at about two hundred yards lurks on the left and it is out of bounds down the right. An accurate second shot is needed to a green with a very narrow entrance. Hole 6 (Old Church View), 400 yards, par 4 The hole is at a 180-degree angle to the first five with the wind almost always off

the left. Therefore, faders and slicers stay left as there is a rhyne marking out of bounds to the right. From the back tee only the big hitters are likely to reach a bunker on the left. Then, unless you are long, it is wise to play to the entrance to the green and chip and putt for par. Stroke index is seven and five for ladies, and not generous. Hole 7 (Four Eyes) 154 yards, par 4 The second short hole sees a raised green but in a valley. Bunkers in front and to the right demand that a crisp shot to the left of the pin is long enough and holds its own

against the wind which is likely to be over the left shoulder. Hole 8 (Undulating) 461 Yards, par 5 A fairly easy par five hole where many are looking for a birdie if the drive is hit well. There is a bunker left of the fairway and one right but the fairway is generous in width. A bunker awaits the pushed second, but if this can be negotiated the third shot should be no more than a chip and run. The most testing part of the hole is the very undulating green.

T

ake the Course Tour (continued)

Hole 9 (The Ditch) 421 yards, par 4 A long par 4; par 5 for the ladies. A ditch that runs parallel to the fairway all the way down the right-hand side catches out many players, especially as the best line into the green is from the right. Those managing to reach the green in two often land the ball short and run it on as few people manage to hit the putting surface in two via the aerial route. This hole plays completely differently depending on which way the wind is blowing and could be driver and three-wood or driver and nine iron. Hole 10 (Clubhouse) 346 Yards, par 4 The tenth completes the first loop. The temptation is to drive to the right away from trouble and towards the first fairway. However, the further to the right from which the second is played the more the bunkers at the back of the green come into play. Stories of birdies and pars after rebounding off the clubhouse roof are legion. Hole 11 (Keyhole) 199 Yards, par 3 The third short hole on the course is certainly the longest. It is recommended the deep bunkers on the left be avoided. A chip and a putt from the right is definitely preferable.

Hole 12 (Plateau) 407 yards, par 4 A longish par four hole which sweeps to the right from a bunker at about two hundred yards. It is vital to avoid this bunker or a six becomes distinctly possible. The green is two tiered and the second shot must be straight or bunkers will be found on left and right. Hole 13 (Raised Valley) 456 yards, par 5 Another par five hole which provides a birdie opportunity with a good drive. The fairway is wide and the one problem is that the hole is usually played into the wind. Bunkers short and right of the green often catch the ambitious looking to get home in two. The green is slightly raised, but the base of the pin can be seen from anywhere in the fairway.

Take the Course Tour (continued) Hole 14 (Corner ) 129 yards, par 3 A short drop hole well bunkered at the front. However, a marshy out of bounds at the back means it is essential not to overclub. Hole 15 (Road Hole) 458 yards, par 4 So called because of its similarity to its famous namesake - the 17th hole at St Andrews. It is similar in length with a green at an angle to the fairway and a bunker cut into it. This is without doubt the most difficult hole on the course. If you have a good card going, drive left; take a medium

to long iron and hit right from where there should be a fairly easy approach. Hole 16 (South Wester) 194 yards, par 3 The one hole on the course which is directly into a prevailing wind, which when strong can leave the green out of range for all but the strongest of players. With the wind in the opposite direction, a medium to short iron will be enough to get home. Hole 17 (Tiger Line) 530 yards, par 5 A dog leg to the right with out of bounds down the right. Depending on the wind the hole can vary from a difficult five to an easy four. Deep bunkers to the left of the

green mean it is better to approach from the right. Make sure you do not go out of bounds getting there. Hole 18 (Out of Bounds) 433 yards, par 4 On the way home now and many a good card has been ruined by going out of bounds to the right. Cross bunkers about 130 yards from the green should not come into play, but two greenside bunkers on the left often do as players hit left to counter the prevailing breezes and to avoid going out of bounds. There is also a bunker to the right making the entrance to the green a little narrow. If you are protecting a good score play it as a par five hole.

The beauty of the handicap system is that it allows players of differing abilities to compete on an equal footing and still enjoy a game to the full. Good golf cannot always be guaranteed but good company is never in short supply and the setting is truly spectacular.

Men We encourage new golfers to participate in our competitions which are mainly played at weekends although some are played midweek. There are also a number of knockout competitions which is a great way to meet other club members.

30 \ Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club

We enter a team in the Bristol & District League whose fixtures consist of five pairs a side playing Foursomes. The end of the season is marked by a Foursomes Medal held on League Finals day for one team of 10 players from each club. Weston-super-Mare also enters two teams in the Avalon League which features play against other Somerset clubs and is an excellent opportunity to play on some of the other outstanding courses across the region. Weston was proud to be the host for finals day of this competition for the first time in 2012 when seven group

winners played for the Western Morning News Trophy on our links. As well as entering competitions within the men’s section, there are also dedicated competitions for senior golfers who play a big part in club life. The seniors are keen supporters of the many roll-ups run during the week and the Club Chairman himself has a well supported weekly “roll-up”. In short, if you are new to the club or to the area and looking for a game of golf, you will always find someone welcoming to play with here on the Somerset coast.

Ladies Weston-super-Mare has a very friendly Ladies Section that meets every week for competition and social golf. Ladies of all abilities are made to feel most welcome. There are a host of trophies to play for within the club itself and as well as enjoying friendly fixtures our ladies also enter two teams in the Bristol and District Lady Golfers Alliance which features seven

players per side playing singles matchplay. Though there is a desire to represent your club to the best of one’s ability, fixtures are always played in a friendly atmosphere and refreshments are enjoyed after the day’s golf is complete. The Ladies also play in a local friendly league, where the competition is even more relaxed. Medal competitions take place on the first Saturday of the month – perfect for those ladies who work during the week - and

there is also a monthly midweek medal as well as many other competitions. A great deal of mixed golf is enjoyed at Weston with matches against other clubs and a very relaxed mixed Stableford event held at the Club on a Sunday, which is as much an enjoyable social occasion as it is a friendly round of golf.

be invited to meet one of the Junior organisers to learn all that we have to offer in terms of membership and facilities.

If your child has shown an interest in golf and wants to find out more about the game, just give our Professional, Mike LaBand, a call and he will be only too pleased to discuss your requirements. New junior member players will be made most welcome and are bound to make some good friends.

For beginners and juniors without a handicap you will first need to contact the Club Professional to get involved with our junior coaching programme. This aims to teach the skills and etiquette required in becoming a member of the club and to become competent enough to enjoy the course to its full advantage.

The Club became the first in Somerset to achieve the prestigious GolfMark Award run by England Golf which recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf clubs. We were extremely proud to be awarded High Achievers status.

All the coaching takes place on the practice ground area situated adjacent to the Uphill junction and opposite Broadoak School playing fields.

The Club actively promotes and encourages youngsters to take up golf and aims to make it fun and readily accessible for under-18s. Juniors with a handicap only need to contact the Club to get an application form, fill it in and return it. You will then

The coaching takes the form of one-hour sessions which in the summer are on a Wednesday, 4.30pm to 6.30pm. When the clocks change at the end of October the sessions move to a Saturday morning. The earlier session is for the younger and newer golfers and the later session is for the older juniors. We regret we are unable to accommodate juniors who have not registered with us beforehand.

If you are new to golf you don’t need to buy clubs to get started. The junior section has clubs in different sizes for the coaching sessions, and if you become a junior member we may be able to provide you with cheap clubs to get started. The sessions are run by the Professional together with qualified “Golf Leaders”, who are members of the club and parents who have been through Golf Foundation training courses and passed all the necessary checks to make sure our young golfers have fun and stay safe. We operate a scheme called the Golf Passport, focusing on basic skills and etiquette. We also have a 4-hole Academy Course situated on the practice area. It is whilst playing around this course that many of the other skills and etiquette of the game are learnt. Due to a limit on numbers and the popularity of the coaching, youngsters wishing to attend will need to register by calling Mike LaBand on 07809 243839 or email labandjm@btinternet.com. We will make every effort to get everyone taking part in the sessions as soon as possible.

nformation for Visitors

Visitors are warmly welcomed at the club throughout the year subject to course availability. Please contact the Pro Shop prior to arrival to ensure a tee time is available to avoid clashes with members and societies. We are a fairly relaxed club but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard

In common with other clubs we request that visitors abide by our dress code both on the course and in the clubhouse and ask that smart golf attire be worn at all times, with denim and training shoes not permitted.

In the less busy winter months in particular there are some outstanding deals to be had, offering golf followed by a snack or more substantial meal, all for a very reasonable price. Make sure you check out our website, www.westonsupermaregolfclub, so that you are in a position to take advantage of the latest offers.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

Special rates are available to holders of the Somerset Golf Union County Card and for those able to play late in the day when the course is at its quietest. For those who wish to play more than 18 holes we also have a Day Rate which represents excellent value.
