We are so excited to welcome back last year’s Title Sponsors for the 73rd Pin Oak Charity Horse Show! For Peter Pletcher, the owner/trainer at PJP Farm in Magnolia, Texas, becoming a title sponsor was a natural progression to continue his long-time commitment to the show. “I’ve shown at Pin Oak for years and years, since I was a little kid,” said Pletcher, who has competed in Pin Oak’s hunters, jumpers, equitation and gaited horse classes since he was 14. “Our sponsorship this year is a tribute to them for giving so much to our sport and for our area, as well.” Pletcher noted that he and his many dedicated clients pitched in to support the show and the sponsorship this year under the banner of PJP Farm. “One of the reasons we chose to do the sponsorship is because it’s our hometown show, but it’s more than that,” he said. “Back in the day, it was THE horse show, but it wasn’t just

a horse show, it was a social event. Many of us have fond memories of those days, and we want to support a horse show that’s supported us for so many years.” Likewise, the clients of Irish Day Farm joined forces—now for a sixth consecutive year—to take the title sponsor role during Week II. Since that first year in 2013, the Irish Day contingent has regularly raised more than the necessary amount of money for the sponsorship and to support Pin Oak, as well as the charity. “It’s really dear to my heart for us all to come together and raise money as a stable,” said Irish Day Farm’s Katie Lambert Boone, who with her husband Hans Boone has been a part of the Houston, Texas, area’s equine community for more than 25 years. “We have an amazing group of clients who really love to give back.” Boone, a native of Ireland, brings 35 to 40 horses to Pin Oak each year with assistant

trainer/rider Morgan Erbstoesser. The show holds a special place in Boone’s heart not just for the competitive atmosphere, but also for the tradition and effort that goes into making it such a special event. “The work everyone does behind the scenes means so much,” she said. “Those who don’t go to many horse shows always want to attend Pin Oak. It’s one of the few horse shows where you have the opportunity to socialize, meet your friends and sit together as a group to watch the grand prix. The night classes and all of the spectators in the stands make it special, too. “The volunteers do such a tremendous job, and the Great Southwest Equestrian Center is all dressed up,” Boone continued. “Each year it all improves. You may see a lot of tired faces at the end of the day, but you also see a lot of smiles, and that’s great!”

The tradition that surrounds this truly fantastic and one of a kind event is one of the many reasons we continue to be one of the country’s premier horse shows. Pin Oak’s mission has been to support the healing of sick children through the production of an annual world class horse show and we are pleased to continue that mission by benefiting Texas Children’s Hospital. Since 1945, we have donated $6.3 Million to Texas Children’s, thanks to the generous support of our donors. This year promises to be exciting as we have extended the show to three weeks of competition and southern hospitality at Great Southwest Equestrian Center! We are thrilled to welcome back our title sponsors for Week Two, Irish Day Farm and Week Three, PJP Farm; and also our ring sponsors, The Lincoln Motor Company, Memorial Park Hunters and Saddle Shoppe! As in previous years, Week One will feature the American Saddlebreds, sponsored by Bluebonnet Farm. In addition, we will be continuing to offer Premier Hunters and World Champion Hunter Rider competitions, three USHJA International Hunter Derbies with $110,000 in prize money. The Jumper divisions feature five Grand Prix events sponsored by Oasis Petroleum/Amalaya Investments, The Hildebrand Fund and Wells Fargo, as well as two U25 events sponsored by Booth Show Jumpers. JAMES SMITHER ABERCROMBIE was a man of great passion and love. He adored his only daughter, Josephine, an accomplished equestrian and horse lover. Mr. Jim had another passion, a desire to help sick and critically ill children. From those two loves came the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show and the charter of the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. First the Pin Oak Stables, a world class venue, was built especially for Josephine to care for and show horses. The first Pin Oak show opened on May 26, 1945 and was billed as the social event of Houston as well as one of the top horse competitions in the United States. Houston’s high society attended. Ladies and gentlemen dressed in their finest and filled the coveted box seats to watch some of the best American Saddlebreds, hunters, jumpers and ponies from all over the world compete for top prizes.

The second phase of Mr. Abercrombie’s master plan was to help build the first pediatric hospital in Houston, where no sick child would be turned away, and to make the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show a benefactor. Using his social and business connections, the hospital became a reality. In 1952, Jim Abercrombie and his wife Lillie donated the first $1 million to begin construction of Texas Children’s Hospital, today one of the best pediatric hospitals in the world.

P I N OA K TO DAY The original Pin Oak Stables were sold for development and in late 1980’s the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show relocated first to the Reliant stadium and later to the Great Southwest Equestrian Center, a premier equine facility in Katy, TX, where the show is headquartered today. CELEBRATING 73 YEARS as one of the most iconic horse shows in the United States, Pin Oak is a three week equestrian extravaganza like no other! From the seed planted in 1947 as the first donor to Texas Children’s Hospital, the renowned medical institution has grown to be the largest pediatric care provider in the world. Pin Oak continues to support the growth of the hospital with a continued commitment to the Sports Medicine program and 2019 planned support of the Legacy Tower, the new 640,000-square-foot facility that will house the Texas Children’s Heart Center the #1 ranking cardiology and heart surgery service in the nation. Over the last 72 years, we have gifted in excess of $6.3 Million to Texas Children’s because of your generosity. 6 YEARS OLD

Lila is your typical 6-year-old who is very active and loves being outdoors. When she began to complain of pain in her leg, her mom, Ashley, thought Lila had sprained her ankle. When the pain became more severe and she no longer wanted to walk—Ashley knew something was wrong. After a trip to an emergency room, where Lila was running a high fever, she was diagnosed with subacute osteomyelitis of the right ankle and tibia. This meant she had an infection in her bone, and surgery was the only treatment option. Ashley immediately took her daughter to Texas Children’s Hospital.

4 YEARS OLD

After 4-year-old Gavyn spent a fun day outside jumping on his trampoline, he told his mom, Jennifer, that his knee was hurting. Gavyn was a very healthy child, and Jennifer thought it was nothing more than an injury from jumping, but she took him to the doctor just to be safe. Gavyn did have a fracture, but even after a cast was put on his leg, the pain increased. Then he stopped walking. Jennifer quickly took her son to Texas Children’s Hospital, where they received news that would forever change their lives. Gavyn was diagnosed with leukemia and needed to begin chemotherapy right away. The leukemia had caused his

bones to become weak, which caused the fracture. Jennifer is now thankful for the trampoline injury, because it led doctors to catch Gavyn’s cancer in the early stages. “The support from Texas Children’s and the Child Life department through everything was amazing,” Jennifer said. “They not only helped Gavyn, but also helped his sisters understand what was happening with their little brother.” After 30 days of treatment, Gavyn is now in remission and is back to enjoying what he loves—video games, robots and playing with his two sisters, Devyn and Avery.

Lila needed four surgeries to completely clear the infection in her leg and ankle. She spent 32 days in the hospital recovering and never once let her diagnosis bring her down. “Lila was so strong and would comfort me through every procedure,” Ashley said. “She is amazing, and she is truly my hero.” Lila still visits Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus for check-ups and physical therapy, and she enjoys seeing all the friends she made during her time there. Inspired by the care she received, Lila wants to be a doctor when she grows up so she can “fix people too.”

US E F H ERITAGE AWAR D In 2007, the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show was the first horse show in the nation to receive the coveted designation as an United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Heritage Competition award. Here is their citation. “The Heritage designation is a honor bestowed by USEF, the governing body of the equestrian sport, and is the highest honor that can be achieved by a horse show in the United States.

NARG supports exhibitors at competitions, creates and presents evaluations to horse shows that results in significant improvements at major events.

Pin Oak is proud to have been in the top 25 horse shows for 2010, 2011, 2012.

Representing the riders and owners in North America, NARG works openly with show management, governing bodies and associations, to improve the quality of horse showing. Part of this process recognizes those competitions that have been reviewed by riders and equestrian officials and the top shows in North America are recognized.

This was awarded by popular vote of the professional trainers of Chapter 6/7. Thank you to Pin Oak’s long-time Breed Show Manager, Peter Fenton.

To the casual visitor, the equestrian world can seem confusing, even sometimes a little bit crazy! If this is your first visit to a horse show, (welcome!) we invite you to get to know some of the breeds and the types of competitions and find out about some of the customs, history and traditions - we hope it will help to enhance your enjoyment of the Pin Oak Show.

T H E AM ER I C A N S A D DLEBRED The American Saddlebred horse carries himself with an attitude that some call class, presence, style or charm. The breed was created in America and the registry dates back to 1891. The versatile saddlebred is known for its stamina and endurance and competes both under saddle and in driving classes. They are best known however, as the “Peacocks of the show ring.” At Pin Oak, you will see saddlebreds compete in the following types of classes: Pleasure, Equitation, Three-Gaited, Five-Gaited and Fine Harness.

These horses are all shown with a full mane and tail which must be carried naturally, and any device that alters the natural carriage of the tail is prohibited. They must give the appearance of being

a pleasure to ride, and easy ground covering movement is desired. Manners and suitability as a pleasure mount are paramount in this division. A flat walk is a requirement.

horse is slower and more collected than that of the five-gaited horse and should be true, high in action, well collected and animated. The mane is roached or trimmed to show a long fine neck.

EQUI TATI ON

The five-gaited horse is shown with a full mane and tail and judged at the walk, trot and canter plus two man-made gaits, the slow gait (a four-beat gait with high front action) and rack (a gait with allaround action and speed). They should have a springy movement and extreme brilliance. The five-gaited horse is either a saddlebred or national show horse.

Equitation is horsemanship, or the art of riding and showing a horse. The rider only is judged on hands, seat, legs, basic position and the ability to make the horse perform any gait or test called for by the judge. Saddleseat equitation is the type of english riding done with a flat english saddle and a four-reined bridle. Hunt seat equitation uses a jumping saddle, and riders may be judged either “on the flat” or “over fences.”

The three-gaited horse performs the three natural gaits: walk, an animated trot (a two-beat diagonal gait) and canter. The trot of the three-gaited

SO ME C O MMO N T ERM S CLEAN OR CLEAR ROUND When a horse completes the jumper course within the time allowed without incurring jumping faults, it is called a “clean round.” When more than one horse goes “clean,” a jump-off is held to determine the winner. COURSE In each class over fences, competitors must negotiate the jumps in a prescribed order.

Spectators who hear a course described as a “perfect course” (P.C.) have seen an event in which the number of riders who qualify for the jump-off is the same as the number of ribbons offered in that class. No two courses are ever the same. Courses for each class are posted in advance near the in-gates so that riders and trainers may memorize them. It

is the role of the course designer to establish the degree of difficulty in the course. The Grand Prix is the highest level of show jumping competition, so the fences are larger and the course is longer and more challenging. There are usually 12 to 18 fences on the Grand Prix course. EQUITATION Equitation classes are classes in which the rider, not the

horse, is judged. The rider must demonstrate good seat and hands, and sufficient management of the horse to perform the required tests, either over fences or on the flat, in a smooth, controlled, and accurate manner. Equitation classes are graded, with entrants restricted by age and previous winnings. The grading sequence from easiest to most difficult is:

Lead Line, Short Stirrup, Maiden, Novice, Limit, Intermediate, and Open. GAITS The different paces at which the horse travels are the walk, trot, canter, gallop, and varying speeds of each. HUNTER Hunters are judged on the style in which they negotiate obstacles as well as on their ability to do so.

The fine harness horse was the “SundayGo-To-Meeting” horse three generations ago. These horses show in light harness and overcheck bridle with a regulation show buggy. They are shown at an animated walk and a brisk, showy park trot. Movement in these gaits should be springy and free with high front and rear leg action. This horse always carries a full mane and tail.

HACKN E Y P O N Y

The hackney is a breed of carriage horse or pony that originated in England and is one of the oldest breeds in the horse kingdom. The high stepper of the show

Show Hunters jump naturallystyled fences simulating obstacles that might be encountered in the hunting field.

The roadster horse belonged to the country doctor or the itinerant preacher in days gone by. They are typically of American standardbred breeding and are shown to a four-wheeled wagon, a two-wheeled bike or under saddle.

Both “Working” and “Conformation” Hunters are judged on their ability and performance. However, the Conformation Hunter is also judged on its physical attributes and beauty. Hunter classes are divided according to several criteria - Age and Experience of rider (Junior, Children’s and Amateur Hunters), Size of Pony (Small, Medium, and Large Pony Hunter), and

Experience of the Horse (Pre-Green, First-Year Green, Second-Year Green, Regular Hunter). JUMPERS Jumpers are judged solely on their ability to jump obstacles. They need not be any special breed or size, nor do they need to be beautiful, or wellmannered. Style doesn’t count; Jumper classes are purely athletic tests of speed and strength.

Drivers or riders may be dressed in racing silks. roadsters are shown at the jog and road gait. These classes are some of the most exciting for exhibitors as they “turn it on” as if on a race track. Speed, form, conformation, soundness and expert driving are essential.

PLEASURE DRI VI NG

This division is open to mares and geldings shown by an amateur. They must give the appearance of being a pleasure, and easy ground covering movement is desired. Manners and suitability are paramount in this division.

Jumper courses are very demanding, calling for technical accuracy on the part of the rider and absolute obedience on the part of the horse. They are required to complete a course of approximately 16 obstacles ranging in height from 3’6” to 5’ or more with spreads of up to 6 feet, depending on the division in which they compete. JUMP-OFF All horses

with “clean” first rounds jump a shortened course against the clock to determine the winner. JUMPING ORDER ORDER-OF-GO The “jumping order” or “starting order” is determined in a drawing before the event so that each competitor has an equal chance of attaining a favorable starting position. Riders near the end of the starting order have the

H U N T ER S Hunter is a discipline, not a breed. Hunter classes are open to all horses regardless of breed, size or sex. The Thoroughbred is thought of as the typical hunter but European Warmbloods, American Quarter horses, Appaloosas, Paints, Morgans, Arabians and various crosses are seen in the hunter ring. Any horse that is considered a sport horse would not be out of place in the hunter division. Hunters should have a smooth, even jumping style and should jump without hesitation or change of pace. The mane is always braided and often the tail. The tack and rider’s attire should reflect the traditional custom of the fox hunt with simple leather bridles and jumping saddles and riders wearing hunt caps and conservative colors.

The jumps or “fences” used in hunter classes simulate the type of obstacles that would be encountered in the hunt field, such as posts and rails, brush and stone walls. The hunter is judged on how he jumps the course, pace, style, rhythm, manners and general appearance and suitability. Undue speed, bucking, refusals and knockdown of any rails or obstacles are counted against him. Light touches are not counted except when elimination is difficult.

JUMPERS Jumper classes are open to all breeds of horses, regardless of size or sex. Classes are divided by fence height, prize money won, and/or rider status (amateur, junior, or open). Jumpers are scored strictly on performance – jumping style and conformation does not count. Mane braiding is not mandatory. Various types of bits and bridles are acceptable. Bell boots, galloping boots, shin boots and wraps are allowed.

Jumper classes are among the most popular with spectators because they provide thrilling entertainment and the judging is simple. A rail knocked down is 4 faults, first refusal is 3 faults. A fall of horse or rider is elimination. Time counts also as classes have a time allowed to complete the course. Speed classes are based on the time it takes to complete the course as well as any faults toward the final score.

advantage of seeing how the first riders complete the course. RIDERS’ ATTIRE Breeches and boots, a ratcatcher, hunt coat, and hunt cap are all worn by the riders. Breeches are the tight fitting pants worn under leather boots. A “ratcatcher” is another name for the riding shirt worn under the hunt coat or jacket. It is common to see Grand Prix riders

wearing a scarlet coat. A blue collar on the coat signifies that the rider has competed for the United States Equestrian Team. Other hunt coat colors are blue, dark green, or black. The “hunt cap” is a type of hard helmet worn by the rider. A rider may also elect to wear spurs or carry a “crop,” or stick, to encourage the horse over the fences.

ROUND OR TRIP Terms used to describe a rider’s turn in each class. STRIDE The amount of ground covered by a horse in one “step” at the canter. The average horse’s stride is 12 feet. Distances between fences are set accordingly by the course designer.

It is a course designer’s job to challenge the ability of the horses and riders. Riders and trainers must identify these challenges and develop strategies accordingly.

RIN GS ID E THE HU N TERS

A Hunter should display the manners and qualities best suited for a ride to hounds. The horse should be attractive with correct and proportional conformation, and should be well turned out. A show Hunter should be completely clean, and his coat shiny. His mane should be braided with many small and evenly spaced braids, and his tail braided and well combed out. It is important for the tack (saddle and bridle) to be clean and well fitted, and any metal such as bits or stirrups should be well shined. The horse’s movement is an important part of the presentation. He should move freely with little action or bending of the knees (less action conserves energy for the long days in the hunt field). The horse should be light and graceful across the ground. A relaxed horse with a long, low neck and a good expression, ears forward and alert, is the most desirable. The most important consideration when judging Hunters is jumping style. The horse should jump with his front legs folded high and evenly. His head and neck should stretch out and down to ensure a well balanced jump. It is important that the horse jumps the jump straight, and in the center. His expression should say that he enjoys his job (ears forward) and his jumping should appear effortless.

MAJOR FAULTS Knees pointing down when jumping. Running away or out of control. Sudden or severe pace change. Hanging a leg when jumping. Cross canter or wrong lead. Bucking or kicking Rail down. Refusal.

The Hunter course is designed to simulate actual field hunting conditions. A typical Hunter course is composed of approximately eight jumps. The jumps consist of natural colored rails, gates, brush and walls. The course includes verticals and oxers. The course may include an ‘in-and-out’ combinationtwo jumps placed to allow only one or two strides between the jumps, which simulates jumping out of a field, crossing a road and jumping into another field-a situation that frequently happens on a real fox hunt.

JUDGI NG A HUNTER ‘ ROU ND’

Judging a Hunter begins the moment the horse and rider enter the ring and continues until they leave. This is his ‘round’. During a riders opening circle the judges get their first look at the horse. Here is where careful turnout of a horse and rider are key. The most important parts of the round are the consistent jumping efforts. The horse should clear each jump easily, with style, and in good form. The pace from the beginning to end should remain about the same, with any sudden changes penalized. The horse is expected to stay in the center of each jump and to move easily through the corners. The horse with the smoothest round and the best jumping effort should end up the winner.

MINOR FAULTS Mouth open; high head. Slight rubs on the jumps. Not in the center of the jump. Pace changes or uneven pace. Uneven front legs, twisting body. Unhappy expression (ears back, tail swishing).

RINGSIDE THE JUMPERS

Jumpers are judged solely on their ability to jump obstacles. They need not be any special breed or size, nor do they need to be beautiful, well mannered or stylish. They are required to complete a course of approximately 16 obstacles ranging in height from 3’6” to 5’ or more with spreads of up to 6’ depending on the division in which they compete. SCORING Horse and rider must jump the fences in a designated sequence. The goal is to cover the course with no faults within the time allowed. The horse that completes the course with fewest penalties and in the fastest time is the winner. Style is not considered and does not affect scoring in Jumper competitions. FAULT The penalty assessed in Jumper classes for mistakes such as knockdowns, refusals, and exceeding the time allowed is called a “fault.” For easy reference, faults are assigned according to the table below. JUMPS Obstacles are brightly colored both for aesthetics and to add difficulty to the course. Some course designers believe the colors and patterns painted on the obstacles affect the way the horses take the jump. The type of construction of a particular fence also determines its difficulty. A fence that is composed of

just a few rails, for example, appears more airy and is more difficult for a horse to negotiate than a solid looking wall or gate.

The general types of jumps in competition are a straight or vertical fence, and a spread (wide) fence or oxer. The degree of difficulty of a jump is determined by its height, width, construction, and its placement in relation to other jumps on the course. In competition, a variety of fences can be used including walls, panels, gates, oxers, water jumps, combinations, banks, and ditches.

Vertical: This is a straight up and down fence of any height without spread or width to it. Although it looks relatively simple, it is actually one of the most difficult for a horse to jump.

Combination: This is a series of jumps usually two or three placed in a rowthat test the horse’s ability to jump successively after one or two strides. Another name for a combination of two fences is ‘in-and-out.’ Oxer: This is a single fence composed of two or three elements to produce a spread. Types of oxers include ramp (elements ascend in height), square

Gate: This fence is a vertical made to appear solid and imposing by using planks, balustrades, gates and or brush. Triple Bar: This is composed of three elements that a horse must clear in one leap. This tests the horse’s ability to jump both height and width. The Wall: This is a very ominous, solid looking fence and the horses tend to jump walls very boldly. The top several sections of the wall are individual blocks which can be dislodged to give a knockdown penalty.

2017 U25 GRA ND PRIX CH A MP I O N “There is not a moment in my life where I remember being without a horse.”

Keely’s mother, Jenny Booth of Booth Show Jumpers, used to take her on trail rides for naptime and have Keely sit in front of her on an old quarter horse mare named ‘Fanny’, a pretty flee bitten grey. At age 5, Keely began riding Fanny and Jenny rode Fanny’s daughter, a bright chestnut mare named ‘Beebers’. “This is what childhood was like for me, trail riding through the forest and taking naps on the backs of our horses,” said Keely. “Twenty years down the road and I am truly blessed to compete in the Grand Prixs, U25 Grand Prixs, Derbies, and Amateur divisions all over the country. I have come a long way since trail rides and nap time on Fanny and Beebers. Even though life with the horses has altered dramatically since I was a child, my love for the sport and the animals remains the same. I have a competitive nature. I love showing and competing, but I ride for the connection I build with my horses. That is something I have never been without and something that I could never see myself giving up. This connection is what keeps you going through tough days and difficult times in life.” Keely has been attending at Pin Oak since she was in elementary school. She said she remembers lying in bed and praying to God every night that one day she would be able to compete in the Pin Oak Grand Prix. She has since made that dream a reality! “The best part about the horse show is being able to see those dreams of young riders come true just as mine did. It is the perfect places for people to come and see the riders’ passion and Pin Oak’s hospitality, and be a part of the experience. 20 17 HI LD EB RA ND FUND GRA ND PRIX CH A MP I O N Trapp O’Neal, owner and trainer at TKO Sporthorses, has been riding since he was 6 years old and has moved up through the ranks to the Grand Prix level. “I started TKO Sporthorses 8 years ago and serve the greater Houston area, while showing extensively all over the country. I was able to build my own facility within the last couple years and have my wonderful clients to thank for their continued support in that endeavor.” Trapp and 14-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Capitano, are two-time Pin Oak Grand Prix Champions. After last year’s win, Trapp told Equine Journal, “I love the atmosphere and the crowd. Any time you can have this type of environment and this type of energy in the ring is just great. The riders and horses feed off of it. It’s fun to ride at this horse show.”

Fastrelko (Kid)

Dutch Warm Blood, 8 years old Kid is a handful! He loves attention, but you would never know because his ears are always back. He is an escape artist and you will find him out of his stall, just hanging out in the barn. Garo Kazan imported Kid as a 5-year-old and was then purchased by the Meyer family. At that time, Kid had never competed. Sarah Meyer said she loves Kid because he has the biggest heart and will give it his all for you in the ring. This young horse has been making quite a name for him and is definitely one to watch. “I have been lucky enough to develop him over the last 3 years into this horse he is today,” said Trapp. He was second last year in the Joker Class, won his first 1.45 in Colorado and was in the 6-year-old finals.

2017 S A D D LE S EAT EQUITATION CHA MP I O N “What I love most about the sport has been constantly learning how to communicate with my equine partner without the understanding of a spoken language. The bond derived is stronger than anything I’ve ever known.” Sydney has been riding for 13 years and competes in Saddle Seat with the American Saddlebred, with a passion for the equitation division. “The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show has always been a wonderful start to the season for me and has been a place where I learn a lot as a rider while creating wonderful memories, which keeps me coming back each year. One of my proudest moments was winning the 2017 Pin Oak Saddle Seat Equitation Championship for the first time after competing in that class for 6 years.” Sydney rides with Vantage Point Farm under the instruction of May Chadick and David Blevins and will be competing in Week One of Pin Oak.

Goodnight Sweet Dreams (Sammie) American Saddlebred, 12 years old

Sammie is infamous for eating tack. Even if you think it’s not in reach, he’s chewing on it. Sammie has competed in everything from Saddle Seat Pleasure, Hunter Country Pleasure, to the Academy ranks. Towards the beginning of his career, Sammie won the Pin Oak Park Pleasure Championship amongst wins across the nation with May Chadick. Five years later with his new owner, Alexa Bernal, he was the Pin Oak Open Pleasure Champion. CATANO (K IT T Y)

H OL ETEI N ER, 19 YEARS O LD Kitty, Catano, is a 19 year old Holeteiner bred by Arlene Rigdon and Carol Krska of Emerald Prairie Farms in Olathe, KS. Catano is a homebred, full Holsteiner gelding by Caesar X Brystol. His lines go back to Cor de la Bryere and Calypso. His owner, Kelsey Russek, actually met the Krska’s when they went to try his 1/2 brother a few years ago. Most of his siblings were used in either high-level dressage or the higher level jumpers. “My favorite memory was actually from [2017] Pin Oak. Kitty had surgery last September, which meant that he had quite a bit of time off, and a lot of rehab. Our goal was to be able to do Pin Oak, even if we just did some of the small training classes. After hauling in for a few lessons with Brooke, we felt confident enough to do the High Adults again. While we had for the most part done well at previous shows, we have always struggled at AA shows because of my nerves. Well, this Pin Oak was by far our best rounds of our lives. Kitty jumped so hard and listened so well. Our last round on Saturday was clean and had put us into the lead. I literally came out and asked my trainer if it was

alright to cry because I loved my horse so much. He had tried his heart out, and all of his efforts showed. At 19, after numerous surgeries, he still went in there and showed us how much he loves his job. That will forever be my favorite memory with him.” – Kelsey Russek When not awaiting surgery, Kelsey rides Kitty in high adult jumpers. Kelsey says that riding him makes it feel like you are riding on springs and that he makes everything seem very small. She also says the best word to describe him is ‘overachiever.’ They’ve placed top ten in Pin Oak’s $10,000 low and high adult jumpers twice now! They also won year end awards for Open Jumpers on the local GHHJA circuit. Kelsey shared that she feels so lucky to have had this animal placed in her life for the last almost 10 years now! They’ve had tons of downs, but every up that they have had together has made up for it! Although she thinks Pin Oak will probably have been their last show together, she is so grateful for this horse and not only his athletic abilities, but his heart as well!

Sulli and Keely compete in show jumping, and won the Pin Oak U25 Grand Prix, second in the $50,000 Grand Prix in Ocala in February. They have also won and placed in several U25 Grand Prixs, open Grand Prixs, and High classics. Keely’s favorite story is how she met Sulli. One day, Keely’s mother got a call from world renowned jumper McLain Ward, saying he had a horse Jenny might be interested in. Her mother declined, as the family’s barn was full at the time. “During that year, two separate people rode him and tried to buy him,” she said. “That was when the accident happened. He was walking through a stall with a giant metal pin sticking out. It got caught on his side and tore him open as he ran through the gate. It took several stitches and months of rehabilitation until he was able to be ridden again.

I will always be so grateful.” Because of his injury, Sulli took some time to build confidence and trust with Keely, but she remembers it being clear from the beginning they were made for each other. These days, Keely and Sulli’s relationship is incredibly strong (aided by his favorite treat: Mrs. Pastures horse cookies). “This horse’s talent is truly limitless with as big of a heart he has. My favorite part about riding horses is the relationship you build with them. Sulli is no exception,” said Keely, who thinks of Sulli as her soulmate. “The bond built with him is one of the strongest I’ve known to this day.”

November passes and with it the flip of another calendar year for riders. Some move up in age groups, some move out of the junior ranks (the oft-dreaded “aging out” process), some are off to college and some to other adventures. For all of us in the horse show world, it is a time to pause, assess, and look forward. Show schedules, training programs, job hunts, school searches, career choices- the New Year’s tapestry unfolds resplendent with resolutions, goals, and plans.

WOMEN MENTORING WOMEN For many of us, the resolution, the goal, and the plan is to stay in the industry in some capacity. We want to envision a future with horses. So, how to proceed? What kind of job can I get? What do I need to do to make it in the horse world? The Plaid Horse contacted a few of our industry’s most successful women. Why only women? Because this is a time in history for women to mentor women. These riders and trainers have forged a path for the younger to follow. Through grit, talent, and perseverance, they rose to the top of this profession. Representing a perfect mix of wisdom and hindsight, their words resonate. To each of the women interviewed, The Plaid Horse posed two questions: 1) What advice would you give to a young woman wanting to begin a career in the show horse industry? 2) What advice would you give your younger self? Margie Engle, Louise Serio, Susie Schoellkopf, Jenny Karazissis, Leslie Steele, Sandy Ferrell, and Anne Kursinski were all kind enough to respond. Now giants in our industry, they recall their journeys as riders and young professionals. While times may have changed in some regard, the road to success still remains steep and not for the weak of heart.

Anne Kursinski operates her business, Market Street, in Frenchtown, NJ. A member of five Olympic Teams and three World Equestrian Game teams, she is the winner of countless Grand Prix and Nations Cup classes, as well as dual Olympic Silver Medals. Anne generously gives her time to the George Morris Horsemastership Clinic, where her flat sessions are legendary. Anne can be seen competing in all levels of showjumping throughout the east coast. Follow your passion. I think it is important to get an education as a fallback. I became a professional as soon as I was out of the juniors, but I am not sure I would give that advice to others. Ride anything and do anything to be able to ride. You can learn from the good, the bad, the tough, the wonderful – all of the horses teach you something. Read every book that was ever written about horsemanship and riding theory and technique. Most importantly, work hard and never give up. Create your own luck by working hard, absorbing everything you can, and putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Keep asking yourself: how can I be a better horseman? Make sure that the horses always come first and never sacrifice them for money or ribbons. Advice to my younger self? Enjoy the journey more consciously. Don’t beat yourself up when things don’t go perfectly. Have some compassion for yourself. And, don’t forget about the future. Put money away and make a long term plan.

Margie Goldstein Engle is an iconic name in American Showjumping. She is a ten time winner of the American Grand Prix Association Rider of the Year award, as well as a multiple Pan American and World Equestrian Games Medal winner. At 5'1", she is pure grit and talent. Margie has suffered multiple injuries in her career, each time returning to competition well before predicted. She can be found riding in the Grand Prix ring as well as training horses and riders at all levels. She operates Gladewinds Farm in Wellington, FL. First of all l would suggest to anyone getting into this industry in any capacity, as with anything in which you want to succeed, is to make sure it is your passion! You will need to being willing to work hard and long hours. As in any business, it is very important to maintain integrity. Perseverance is a must which takes discipline and focus. Always put the horses' needs first and remember to have compassion for not just the horses but others as well.

Louise Serio is from Kennett Square, PA, where she operates Derbydown, an iconic farm founded by her parents in the 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Louise is a second generation horsewoman, and her children, Christina and TR, have followed her lead into the horse industry where Christina is a rider/trainer and TR is a farrier. Louise is the most successful female hunter rider in history. She has been Champion multiple times at the largest horse shows in America, including Devon, Pa. National, Washington International, the National, WEF, etc. She teaches juniors and amateurs as well as riding both green and seasoned horses. If you want to be a rider or trainer, work for a good rider or trainer. This is a hard business to understand and to do well, so give yourself some time to figure it out. Pick someone who is patient and kind to animals, and remember that you are the advocate for the horse. If you are second in command, watch and learn from the person who is first in command. You may just want to stay where you are! It is stressful to be the boss and take the heat all of the time. If you have to be a working student so be it. You can learn by watching and working with some of the better horseman. Try to use every opportunity available to you even if it is working around the barn as a learning opportunity and to develop a type of horse sense. These experiences will ultimately help with your horsemanship. It should not be about the money but more about learning what the horses' needs are and how they think and respond to different actions. Every horse you encounter can teach you something even the more difficult ones. In the end it will make you appreciate the easier ones that much more!

When you start on your own, enter at a level where you can have success and make mistakes and move on. Do not go in at the top. Establish values, find your moral framework, and learn to bring clients and horses along. Make sure you consider your personal life when you decide to have this career. There is a lot of travel to work into your life. Ask yourself if you really want that life. Advice to my younger self? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get married when you are 18 years old!

Jenny Karazissis and her husband, Kost, are based out of Far West Farms in Calabasas, CA. Jenny is a familiar face in the show hunter ring, having won multiple Championships on both coasts. Most recently, she won the 2017 WCHR West Coast Spectacular aboard Undeniable, only to ship him east and win the $500,000 Diamond Mills Hunter Prix. In addition to riding and training, Jenny is an active participant in the governance of our sport. I think it is important to pay your dues through hard work by doing jobs that you may feel are beneath you or not related to what you ultimately want out of the industry. Advice to my younger self? Just when you think you have it all figured out, you learn a valuable lesson and realize how much more there is to know. Also, when you set goals and achieve them you should savor them a little while before moving on.

Susie Schoellkopf has had a stellar career as rider, trainer, owner, and judge. She operates SBS Farms in Buffalo, NY, and is Executive Director of the Buffalo Equestrian Center and the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center. With rider Jennifer Alfano, SBS has produced famous horses such as GG Valentine, Miss Lucy, and International Hunter Derby superstar, Jersey Boy. Susie is involved in governance with USHJA and Zone 2 Committees. My advice to someone coming into this business in any capacity is be prepared to work hard 24/7 because your passion is horses. You have to start at the bottom and work your way to the top or to as far as you think you can go. When you are dealing with animals it is very time consuming and very hard work. Read a lot – study the history of our sport on many levels. Know the top players and why they are the best… Dr. John Steele, Rodney Jenkins, Melanie Taylor, Joe Alfano. Ask questions and know every detail of training, showing, horse care, shoeing. I am thankful that I saw so many sides of our sport – fox hunting, training and teaching, a lesson business, therapeutic riding, judging. I am lucky to have had Jennifer Alfano work with me for twenty five years – she is the ultimate rider and horsewoman. She started at her parents’ farm and has created a system of horse care that is the very best. Advice to my younger self? If I knew what I know now when I started, I would have studied more riders and their care and training technique.

Sandy Ferrell is one of the most prolific hunter riders in the show ring. She has piloted such famous horses as El Primero, Indian Summer, Bolero, and Fifty Shades to Championship honors at premier hunter events throughout the east coast. She can be seen exhibiting young horses to seasoned veterans - each benefiting from her uncanny eye for distance and keen sense of pace. Sandy splits her time between Wellington, FL and Bel Air, Maryland. I honestly believe that the horse show industry is one of the few that women and men are equal on every level. We must achieve strength, knowledge, education, talent, financial backing, horsemanship, people skills, high levels of integrity, and love of the animal. Work ethic is essential and striving to be a good influence. There is neither the need nor the room for discrimination of any kind. Our loyalty begins and ends with the horses!! Advice to my younger self? Be proud when you refuse to deviate from what true horsemen and horsewomen taught you, even if it means missing out on an opportunity.

Leslie Steele has been a fixture in the west coast horse show scene for over thirty years. She has won Championships at all major horse shows on both coasts. Her riding skill extends from the top echelons of the hunter discipline to the Grand Prix jumper ring. Operating her own Acres West in Calabasas, CA, Leslie is a consummate trainer and teacher with students competing successfully in the hunter, jumper, and equitation rings. Most recently, Leslie showcased her venerable catch riding skills. She rode Milissa Summer’s Top Shelf to Reserve Championship honors in both the 3'6" Green and Green Conformation Hunter Divisions at the Washington International Horse Show. I think first and foremost I would tell anyone who wanted to be in any part of the horse industry to get an education. Whatever part of our industry you are in, go and work for people you respect. Get as much work experience as you can. You can never learn too much. Read and know about anatomy – how the horse works. Too many people want to teach, ride, and manage, but haven’t been hands on in the trenches and learned about shoeing, feeding, health care. There is so much to know about our industry that you can never know enough. Also, I think you need to know what’s going on in our world. Too many people in our industry can only talk horse. There’s a big world out there. Keep current and remember this is a very small industry in a big world. Advice to my younger self? Spend smart, save money, and make better financial choices.

Seven of the show horse industry’s most successful women offer their career advice. What is the common thread? To succeed you must be willing to do any job and work tirelessly. To succeed you need to find your mentor who may be an employer, an owner, a trainer. Surround yourself with people who will help you learn not only the tangible parts of the business – the day-to-day horse care, riding skills, training techniques – but who will also mirror moral and ethical values. The trophy will now be presented during Week 3 of Pin Oak. “Candie Owens was a lifelong equestrian. Second only to her family, was her love of horses and the world of horse showing. She was happiest when she was teaching and coaching. At horse shows Candie was always ready with a smile and words of encouragement for her fellow competitors.” – Frank Owens

JANE Q U E E NE R B E ST YO U NG HO R SE T R O P HY Olva Pharo and Spring Gathering created this award 11 years ago to Memorialize Jane S. Queener. Jane owned and bred the TB Stallion, “Jones Hall”, and loved watching her own, and all of the young horses show in the Hunter Breeding. Once shown here in Texas, she sent many of her sire’s progeny on to the East Coast to compete, as she believed that “the good ones will be rewarded anywhere”! When not petting a soft young muzzle, Jane could be found helping out at the local Texas shows, giving out awards, cheering on others, showing thanks to all of the many people involved, and appreciating the endless hours that it takes to put on a first class show such as The Spring Gathering! Huge thanks to Olva Pharo for making such a beautiful trophy, and even creating the smaller replicas for the owner(s) to keep and cherish for years to come.

IT’S NOT AS EASY They are the voices in our head, the sound track of our horse show lives, the narrators of the day.

Three of the busiest announcers on the show circuit: Kenn Marash, Peter Doubleday, and Brian Lookabill

Every horse show grounds has one thing in common: the announcer. They sound the beginning of the day with a familiar, “Good morning, and welcome to the…” Fill in the blank with any location, any season, any discipline. Some have accents, bringing an international flavor. Some inject humor to their dialogue; some are strictly informational. Large grounds have multiple announcers whose words bounce back and forth all day like a ball over a net while smaller venues have one announcer. All must expertly juggle scheduling updates, results, and directions. Announcers are the scriptwriters, directors, and producers of the documentary known as a day at the horse show. Their voices are smooth and melodic, assuring that all is well and according to plan. How difficult could it be to read off of a list and announce results that the judge radios in? Well, as one who has observed announcers from a shared judges’ box, the author guarantees that it is not as easy as it sounds. Kenn Marash, Peter Doubleday, and Brian Lookabill are three of the busiest announcers on the show circuit. All of them possess voices that you could listen to all day, all have been involved in the horse show business for decades in many capacities, and all take their roles very seriously. They are multi-decade road warriors, each describing a schedule of more than forty weeks per year at the height of their careers. One week per month at home is a daunting challenge. The current reward is the opportunity to trim their schedules and enjoy well-deserved time at home. Marash, Doubleday, and Lookabill followed different routes to the same destination: the announcer’s chair at the best equine competitions in the world. Kenn Marash proudly hails from upstate New York and is adept at pronouncing

some of the more difficult cities up there, including the hometown of recent Maclay Finals winner, Madison Goetzmann. Somehow, the word Skaneateles rolls off his tongue with relish. Recently married, Kenn now reluctantly cites Pennsylvania as his too little visited home base. “Never afraid of the microphone,” he began announcing polo matches at Cornell University, his alma mater. “I wasn’t good enough to make the team, so I announced the matches,” he jokes. Marash explains his job as “the liaison between the judge and the exhibitor, the traffic cop between rings, and the communicator in the barns.” While he may be fielding results from one ring, he is listening to the manager and ring crew discuss scheduling, or answering questions about the numerical cut off for a class. It takes a high level of management skill to recognize and respond to ring conflicts, make sure that exhibitors know whom is being addressed, and understand the flow of the show day. As Marash explains, “There is a lot that can go wrong. It can go from quiet to chaotic very quickly. If someone gets bucked off or there is a loose horse, if the radios go out, the announcers need to respond.” Doubleday hails from Syracuse, NY, and is the son of a local radio and TV announcer who moonlighted at horse shows on weekends. Doubleday hung around the shows with his father and, after college, went on to work as a horse show groom. Soon, he was announcing different types of shows.” I was doing all different breeds – Morgans, appaloosas, Arabians – all of them. I feel so fortunate that I was exposed to anything with four legs that showed. I was working forty weeks a year at all different shows. When I got into management, it helped that I had been exposed to so much.”

AS IT SOUNDS Lookabill was born a singer. In high school, he was the lead in a local band. “I used to perform shows around town. At one point, I had to decide whether I wanted to keep doing that or make some money.” His friend, J.P. Godard, now manager of prestigious shows throughout the U.S., introduced Lookabill to the horse show industry. “I started to hang around the horse shows with J.P., and it kind of took on a life of its own.” He learned the mechanics of running a horse show by doing any task presented.

The quality and energy of a class can be created and sustained by a good announcer. Big horse show audiences are usually diverse in their depth of knowledge. Some are familiar with the program, some are neophytes. The announcers walk the fine line of talking down to people in the know or talking over the heads of newcomers. “A good announcer can enhance a show and make it a better product. It is our job to make a pleasurable experience for the people there,” Marash states. Big night classes are where Doubleday shines. “Part of the success of a big night is the energy and excitement. I come to each session as fresh as possible, even if I have to dig deep because I have been there all day. You have to step up to the plate in every class. Regardless of whether it is a schooling jumper class or the World Cup Championships, it is important to somebody. So, it is important to do everything correctly.” Informative, precise, appropriate are the words he uses to describe his dialogue. Doubleday has several prepared speeches for possible ring scenarios such as injury or death. Thankful that he

hasn’t had to use them often, he carries them as a talisman against bad fortune. Music is a big element in the life of all announcers. A good playlist can involve the crowd or and build emotional momentum. For internationally diverse shows, the announcer has anthems for all of the riders’ countries available for the victory presentation. With the influx of European horses, foreign names can be a challenge. Often, there is a call down to the starter for pronunciation clarification from riders and trainers.

The Pennsylvania National, and The Royal Horse Show in Canada, while Lookabill is a Production Manager for large entities such as The National Horse Show. In addition, Lookabill and business partner, Visse Wedell, have started Envisian LLC, a company that offers Polylast Rubberized Flooring. In almost a century of announcing between them, Marash, Doubleday, and Lookabill possess an array of memorable moments. Doubleday describes the experience of announcing the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. “I will never forget it. There were 33,000 people waiting in the Olympic Stadium for a 9AM team class. The producer said in my ear, ‘Ok, Peter, we are going on in 10, 9, 8.’ The Olympic theme started and every single person stood up. I thought, ‘Wow, this is what it is all about.’” Marash enjoys most of the large shows, especially The National Horse Show. “It is the only one. I grew up watching it and is an honor to sit in the chair.” As a foil to typical horse shows, the New York State Fair is one where the playbill ranges from draft horses to tractor pulls to car races. “I get a kick out of it all,” he says warmly. Today, the three giants of the booth are preparing to head to their winter venues, each having branched out from announcing to larger roles in horse show production. Marash manages shows in New York, Doubleday oversees Devon,

Marash, Doubleday, and Lookabill are the voices woven into our horse show experience.
