Their multidisciplinary team of experts care for the most critically-ill children, those with the most complex medical needs — children who simply would not have survived just a few years ago. This year’s donations will benefit the 12th floor Pin Oak Family Patient Playroom in the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower. The 640,000-square-foot Legacy Tower is Texas Children’s newest addition in the Med Center and houses their Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Texas Children’s Heart Center® – ranked #1 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in cardiology and heart surgery. The Heart Center includes an outpatient clinic, catheterization lab, cardiovascular intensive care unit, four cardiovascular operating rooms and cardiology acute care beds. The tower also has a helistop, allowing for even greater access to Texas Children’s for the most critically-ill patients. JAMES SMITHER ABERCROMBIE was a man of great passion and love. He adored his only daughter, Josephine, an accomplished equestrian and horse lover. Mr. Jim had another passion, a desire to help sick and critically ill children. From those two loves came the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show and the charter of the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. First the Pin Oak Stables, a world class venue, was built especially for Josephine to care for and show horses. The first Pin Oak show opened on May 26, 1945 and was billed as the social event of Houston as well as one of the top horse competitions in the United States. Houston’s high society attended. Ladies and gentlemen dressed in their finest and filled the coveted box seats to watch some of the best American Saddlebreds, hunters, jumpers and ponies from all over the world compete for top prizes.

The second phase of Mr. Abercrombie’s master plan was to help build the first pediatric hospital in Houston, where no sick child would be turned away, and to make the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show a benefactor. Using his social and business connections, the hospital became a reality. In 1952, Jim Abercrombie and his wife Lillie donated the first $1 million to begin construction of Texas Children’s Hospital, today one of the best pediatric hospitals in the world.

PIN OAK TODAY The original Pin Oak Stables were sold for development and in late 1980’s the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show relocated first to the Reliant stadium and later to the Great Southwest Equestrian Center, a premier equine facility in Katy, TX, where the show is headquartered today. CELEBRATING 74 YEARS as one of the most iconic horse shows in the United States, Pin Oak is a three week equestrian extravaganza like no other! From the seed planted in 1947 as the first donor to Texas Children’s Hospital, the renowned medical institution has grown to be the largest pediatric care provider in the world. Pin Oak continues to support the growth of the hospital with our newest commitment, the 12th Floor Pin Oak Patient Playroom in the Legacy Tower, the new 640,000-square-foot facility that houses the Texas Children's Heart Center--the #1 ranked cardiology and heart surgery service in the nation. Over the last 73 years, we have gifted in excess of $6.3 Million to Texas Children’s because of your generosity. Noah was normally a fun and high-energy child. But last summer when his mom, Sandy, noticed he had slowed down a bit, she thought he might be grieving the recent passing of his grandfather. When Noah’s energy still hadn’t returned and he spiked a fever later in the summer, she took him to the pediatrician. After getting some test results, the doctor urged her to take Noah to go the emergency room at nearby Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, where he was admitted right away. A bone marrow test revealed that Noah had leukemia. He was transferred to Texas Children’s Main Campus in the Texas Medical Center on the eve of the Fourth of July.

When Victoria’s four-month old son, Mason, started hunching over and sticking out his arms and legs, she suspected a neurological issue. At first, doctors thought it was colic because there was no family history of neurological condition. Things did not get better, though, and Victoria began doing some online research. She found a video and recognized symptoms that matched what she had seen in Mason. Springing into action, she showed his pediatrician the video the very next day. The pediatrician referred Mason to a neurologist, who immediately set up an outpatient appointment for Mason to get an EEG at the Neurology Clinic at Texas

Children’s Hospital’s Main Campus in the Texas Medical Center. Right away, he was sent to the emergency center to be admitted. The next day, they had their diagnosis: tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a genetic disorder that causes benign tumor-like growths to form in many different organs. These growths may cause seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability and autism. Victoria is so grateful for the way the team at Texas Children’s handled everything. “They took Mason’s symptoms very seriously and reacted immediately with

“That whole time was a blur,” explains Sandy. “We were trying to figure out how to deal with Noah’s diagnosis. He started chemotherapy the next day, with fireworks going off and flooding all around Houston.” Noah responded well to the treatments and is now in recovery. He visits Texas Children’s only once a month for followups, and he is feeling great and returning to his old happy and silly self. While he hasn’t yet jumped back on his scooter, he loves telling jokes and playing board games and his Nintendo Switch. A big nature and animal lover, Noah is very excited to attend the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show.

HO N O R E D HE R O E S so much confidence,” she recalls. “And through it all, they understood that we were distraught and overwhelmed, and they treated us with courtesy and understanding.” Mason has gone through quite a journey for someone so young. He had a near-fatal aspiration episode and had to have a feeding tube for a while. A subsequent brain surgery controlled his seizures for a time, and he began to learn to eat by mouth again and was starting to stand on his own and even take a few steps. Unfortunately, seizures began again, and it became unsafe for him to eat or move around.

A few months after his third birthday, Mason was back at Texas Children’s, where neurosurgeons Drs. Howard Weiner and Daniel Curry assessed him for minimally-invasive laser ablation surgery, an innovation pioneered for TSC patients at Texas Children’s. “Bless them, they were spot on,” says Victoria. “We had control, and he was able to eat safely and move around without falling.” Now age 5, Mason loves to cuddle with his family and play with his younger brother. He still struggles with neurological issues, but he now can run around, and he’s even started learning sign language— with “more” and “eat” being his first words!

C O LO MBIA N U TR ITI ONA L REC OV ERY C ENT E R As part of its Global Health Program, Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine partner in Colombia—as well as in several African countries and in Romania—to improve the health and well-being of children and families in resourcelimited settings.

The Nutritional Recovery Center (NRC)—supported by Chevron, the Colombian Welfare Institute and local indigenous leaders—is an integral part of their mission to decrease child morbidity and mortality in La Guajia, Colombia. Here, about 30 children and their guardians receive inpatient care and treatment each month from an interdisciplinary team that develops health care interventions to improve nutritional status and help ensure its sustainability. In addition to treating severe malnutrition and developmental delays, parents and guardians also attend classes on food preparation, sanitation and hygiene, and income generation.

Ada, an 8-year-old with Down syndrome, was admitted to the NRC with severe malnutrition and delayed growth. After treatment, there, she has become a cheerful and active child and is gaining weight

Yeiner came to the NRC when he was one-and-a-half years old. He was diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition, showed signs of emaciation, and was not as tall as he should have been for his age. The caregivers at the NRC gave him ready-to- use therapeutic formula treatment, and Yeiner developed a good appetite and began gaining weight so well that he was discharged early!

US E F H ERITAGE AWAR D In 2007, the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show was the first horse show in the nation to receive the coveted designation as an United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Heritage Competition award. Here is their citation. “The Heritage designation is a honor bestowed by USEF, the governing body of the equestrian sport, and is the highest honor that can be achieved by a horse show in the United States.

NA R G T OP 25 H OR S E S HO W The North American Riders Group, NARG, remains steadfast in achieving an essential goal – improving our sport so that once again show jumping in North America will rank among the greatest in the world. NARG supports exhibitors at competitions, creates and presents evaluations to horse shows that results in significant improvements at major events.

Pin Oak is proud to have been in the top 25 horse shows for 2010, 2011, 2012.

Representing the riders and owners in North America, NARG works openly with show management, governing bodies and associations, to improve the quality of horse showing. Part of this process recognizes those competitions that have been reviewed by riders and equestrian officials and the top shows in North America are recognized.

2 0 1 8 UPH A CHAPTE R 6/7 HONO R H OR SE SH O W At the recent United Professional Horsemen’s Association National Convention, the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show was awarded the UPHA Chapter 6/7 Honor show of the year for 2016. This was awarded by popular vote of the professional trainers of Chapter 6/7. Thank you to Pin Oak’s long-time Breed Show Manager, Peter Fenton.

If this is your first visit to a horse show, (welcome!) we invite you to get to know some of the breeds and the types of competitions and find out about some of the customs, history and traditions - we hope it will help to enhance your enjoyment of the Pin Oak Show.

T H E AM ER I C A N S A D DLEBRED The American Saddlebred horse carries himself with an attitude that some call class, presence, style or charm. The breed was created in America and the registry dates back to 1891. The versatile saddlebred is known for its stamina and endurance and competes both under saddle and in driving classes. They are best known however, as the “Peacocks of the show ring.” At Pin Oak, you will see saddlebreds compete in the following types of classes: Pleasure, Equitation, Three-Gaited, Five-Gaited and Fine Harness.

These horses are all shown with a full mane and tail which must be carried naturally, and any device that alters the natural carriage of the tail is prohibited. They must give the appearance of being

a pleasure to ride, and easy ground covering movement is desired. Manners and suitability as a pleasure mount are paramount in this division. A flat walk is a requirement.

horse is slower and more collected than that of the five-gaited horse and should be true, high in action, well collected and animated. The mane is roached or trimmed to show a long fine neck.

The five-gaited horse is shown with a full mane and tail and judged at the walk, trot and canter plus two man-made gaits, the slow gait (a four-beat gait with high front action) and rack (a gait with allaround action and speed). They should have a springy movement and extreme brilliance. The five-gaited horse is either a saddlebred or national show horse.

Equitation is horsemanship, or the art of riding and showing a horse. The rider only is judged on hands, seat, legs, basic position and the ability to make the horse perform any gait or test called for by the judge. Saddleseat equitation is the type of english riding done with a flat english saddle and a four-reined bridle. Hunt seat equitation uses a jumping saddle, and riders may be judged either “on the flat” or “over fences.”

The three-gaited horse performs the three natural gaits: walk, an animated trot (a two-beat diagonal gait) and canter. The trot of the three-gaited

SO ME C O MMO N T ERM S CLEAN OR CLEAR ROUND When a horse completes the jumper course within the time allowed without incurring jumping faults, it is called a “clean round.” When more than one horse goes “clean,” a jump-off is held to determine the winner. COURSE In each class over fences, competitors must negotiate the jumps in a prescribed order.

Spectators who hear a course described as a “perfect course” (P.C.) have seen an event in which the number of riders who qualify for the jump-off is the same as the number of ribbons offered in that class. No two courses are ever the same. Courses for each class are posted in advance near the in-gates so that riders and trainers may memorize them. It

is the role of the course designer to establish the degree of difficulty in the course. The Grand Prix is the highest level of show jumping competition, so the fences are larger and the course is longer and more challenging. There are usually 12 to 18 fences on the Grand Prix course. EQUITATION Equitation classes are classes in which the rider, not the

horse, is judged. The rider must demonstrate good seat and hands, and sufficient management of the horse to perform the required tests, either over fences or on the flat, in a smooth, controlled, and accurate manner. Equitation classes are graded, with entrants restricted by age and previous winnings. The grading sequence from easiest to most difficult is:

Lead Line, Short Stirrup, Maiden, Novice, Limit, Intermediate, and Open. GAITS The different paces at which the horse travels are the walk, trot, canter, gallop, and varying speeds of each. HUNTER Hunters are judged on the style in which they negotiate obstacles as well as on their ability to do so.

The fine harness horse was the “SundayGo-To-Meeting” horse three generations ago. These horses show in light harness and overcheck bridle with a regulation show buggy. They are shown at an animated walk and a brisk, showy park trot. Movement in these gaits should be springy and free with high front and rear leg action. This horse always carries a full mane and tail.

HACKN E Y P O N Y

The hackney is a breed of carriage horse or pony that originated in England and is one of the oldest breeds in the horse kingdom. The high stepper of the show

They are generally Thoroughbreds or part Thoroughbreds and originally were meant to represent the type of horse that provides a safe and pleasant ride on a fox hunt. Show Hunters jump naturallystyled fences simulating obstacles that might be encountered in the hunting field.

The roadster horse belonged to the country doctor or the itinerant preacher in days gone by. They are typically of American standardbred breeding and are shown to a four-wheeled wagon, a two-wheeled bike or under saddle.

Both “Working” and “Conformation” Hunters are judged on their ability and performance. However, the Conformation Hunter is also judged on its physical attributes and beauty. Hunter classes are divided according to several criteria - Age and Experience of rider (Junior, Children’s and Amateur Hunters), Size of Pony (Small, Medium, and Large Pony Hunter), and

Experience of the Horse (Pre-Green, First-Year Green, Second-Year Green, Regular Hunter). JUMPERS Jumpers are judged solely on their ability to jump obstacles. They need not be any special breed or size, nor do they need to be beautiful, or wellmannered. Style doesn’t count; Jumper classes are purely athletic tests of speed and strength.

Drivers or riders may be dressed in racing silks. roadsters are shown at the jog and road gait. These classes are some of the most exciting for exhibitors as they “turn it on” as if on a race track. Speed, form, conformation, soundness and expert driving are essential.

PLEASURE DRI VI NG

This division is open to mares and geldings shown by an amateur. They must give the appearance of being a pleasure, and easy ground covering movement is desired. Manners and suitability are paramount in this division.

Jumper courses are very demanding, calling for technical accuracy on the part of the rider and absolute obedience on the part of the horse. They are required to complete a course of approximately 16 obstacles ranging in height from 3’6” to 5’ or more with spreads of up to 6 feet, depending on the division in which they compete. JUMP-OFF All horses

with “clean” first rounds jump a shortened course against the clock to determine the winner. JUMPING ORDER ORDER-OF-GO The “jumping order” or “starting order” is determined in a drawing before the event so that each competitor has an equal chance of attaining a favorable starting position. Riders near the end of the starting order have the

H U N T ER S Hunter is a discipline, not a breed. Hunter classes are open to all horses regardless of breed, size or sex. The Thoroughbred is thought of as the typical hunter but European Warmbloods, American Quarter horses, Appaloosas, Paints, Morgans, Arabians and various crosses are seen in the hunter ring. Any horse that is considered a sport horse would not be out of place in the hunter division. Hunters should have a smooth, even jumping style and should jump without hesitation or change of pace. The mane is always braided and often the tail. The tack and rider’s attire should reflect the traditional custom of the fox hunt with simple leather bridles and jumping saddles and riders wearing hunt caps and conservative colors.

The jumps or “fences” used in hunter classes simulate the type of obstacles that would be encountered in the hunt field, such as posts and rails, brush and stone walls. The hunter is judged on how he jumps the course, pace, style, rhythm, manners and general appearance and suitability. Undue speed, bucking, refusals and knockdown of any rails or obstacles are counted against him. Light touches are not counted except when elimination is difficult.

JUMPERS Jumper classes are open to all breeds of horses, regardless of size or sex. Classes are divided by fence height, prize money won, and/or rider status (amateur, junior, or open). Jumpers are scored strictly on performance – jumping style and conformation does not count. Mane braiding is not mandatory. Various types of bits and bridles are acceptable. Bell boots, galloping boots, shin boots and wraps are allowed.

Jumper classes are among the most popular with spectators because they provide thrilling entertainment and the judging is simple. A rail knocked down is 4 faults, first refusal is 3 faults. A fall of horse or rider is elimination. Time counts also as classes have a time allowed to complete the course. Speed classes are based on the time it takes to complete the course as well as any faults toward the final score.

advantage of seeing how the first riders complete the course. RIDERS’ ATTIRE Breeches and boots, a ratcatcher, hunt coat, and hunt cap are all worn by the riders. Breeches are the tight fitting pants worn under leather boots. A “ratcatcher” is another name for the riding shirt worn under the hunt coat or jacket. It is common to see Grand Prix riders

wearing a scarlet coat. A blue collar on the coat signifies that the rider has competed for the United States Equestrian Team. Other hunt coat colors are blue, dark green, or black. The “hunt cap” is a type of hard helmet worn by the rider. A rider may also elect to wear spurs or carry a “crop,” or stick, to encourage the horse over the fences.

ROUND OR TRIP Terms used to describe a rider’s turn in each class. STRIDE The amount of ground covered by a horse in one “step” at the canter. The average horse’s stride is 12 feet. Distances between fences are set accordingly by the course designer.

to the actual competition, but riders are permitted to walk the route, pacing off the number of strides between jumps and examining the obstacles closely. It is a course designer’s job to challenge the ability of the horses and riders. Riders and trainers must identify these challenges and develop strategies accordingly.

RIN GS ID E THE HU N TERS

A Hunter should display the manners and qualities best suited for a ride to hounds. The horse should be attractive with correct and proportional conformation, and should be well turned out. A show Hunter should be completely clean, and his coat shiny. His mane should be braided with many small and evenly spaced braids, and his tail braided and well combed out. It is important for the tack (saddle and bridle) to be clean and well fitted, and any metal such as bits or stirrups should be well shined. The horse’s movement is an important part of the presentation. He should move freely with little action or bending of the knees (less action conserves energy for the long days in the hunt field). The horse should be light and graceful across the ground. A relaxed horse with a long, low neck and a good expression, ears forward and alert, is the most desirable. The most important consideration when judging Hunters is jumping style. The horse should jump with his front legs folded high and evenly. His head and neck should stretch out and down to ensure a well balanced jump. It is important that the horse jumps the jump straight, and in the center. His expression should say that he enjoys his job (ears forward) and his jumping should appear effortless.

MAJOR FAULTS Knees pointing down when jumping. Running away or out of control. Sudden or severe pace change. Hanging a leg when jumping. Cross canter or wrong lead. Bucking or kicking Rail down. Refusal.

T H E H UN TER COURSE A N D JUMPS

The Hunter course is designed to simulate actual field hunting conditions. A typical Hunter course is composed of approximately eight jumps. The jumps consist of natural colored rails, gates, brush and walls. The course includes verticals and oxers. The course may include an ‘in-and-out’ combinationtwo jumps placed to allow only one or two strides between the jumps, which simulates jumping out of a field, crossing a road and jumping into another field-a situation that frequently happens on a real fox hunt.

JUDGI NG A HUNTER ‘ ROU ND’

Judging a Hunter begins the moment the horse and rider enter the ring and continues until they leave. This is his ‘round’. During a riders opening circle the judges get their first look at the horse. Here is where careful turnout of a horse and rider are key. The most important parts of the round are the consistent jumping efforts. The horse should clear each jump easily, with style, and in good form. The pace from the beginning to end should remain about the same, with any sudden changes penalized. The horse is expected to stay in the center of each jump and to move easily through the corners. The horse with the smoothest round and the best jumping effort should end up the winner.

MINOR FAULTS Mouth open; high head. Slight rubs on the jumps. Not in the center of the jump. Pace changes or uneven pace. Uneven front legs, twisting body. Unhappy expression (ears back, tail swishing).

RINGSIDE THE JUMPERS

Jumpers are judged solely on their ability to jump obstacles. They need not be any special breed or size, nor do they need to be beautiful, well mannered or stylish. They are required to complete a course of approximately 16 obstacles ranging in height from 3’6” to 5’ or more with spreads of up to 6’ depending on the division in which they compete. SCORING Horse and rider must jump the fences in a designated sequence. The goal is to cover the course with no faults within the time allowed. The horse that completes the course with fewest penalties and in the fastest time is the winner. Style is not considered and does not affect scoring in Jumper competitions. FAULT The penalty assessed in Jumper classes for mistakes such as knockdowns, refusals, and exceeding the time allowed is called a “fault.” For easy reference, faults are assigned according to the table below. JUMPS Obstacles are brightly colored both for aesthetics and to add difficulty to the course. Some course designers believe the colors and patterns painted on the obstacles affect the way the horses take the jump. The type of construction of a particular fence also determines its difficulty. A fence that is composed of

just a few rails, for example, appears more airy and is more difficult for a horse to negotiate than a solid looking wall or gate.

The general types of jumps in competition are a straight or vertical fence, and a spread (wide) fence or oxer. The degree of difficulty of a jump is determined by its height, width, construction, and its placement in relation to other jumps on the course. In competition, a variety of fences can be used including walls, panels, gates, oxers, water jumps, combinations, banks, and ditches.

Vertical: This is a straight up and down fence of any height without spread or width to it. Although it looks relatively simple, it is actually one of the most difficult for a horse to jump.

Combination: This is a series of jumps usually two or three placed in a rowthat test the horse’s ability to jump successively after one or two strides. Another name for a combination of two fences is ‘in-and-out.’ Oxer: This is a single fence composed of two or three elements to produce a spread. Types of oxers include ramp (elements ascend in height), square

Gate: This fence is a vertical made to appear solid and imposing by using planks, balustrades, gates and or brush. Triple Bar: This is composed of three elements that a horse must clear in one leap. This tests the horse’s ability to jump both height and width. The Wall: This is a very ominous, solid looking fence and the horses tend to jump walls very boldly. The top several sections of the wall are individual blocks which can be dislodged to give a knockdown penalty.

The trophy will now be presented during Week 3 of Pin Oak. “Candie Owens was a lifelong equestrian. Second only to her family, was her love of horses and the world of horse showing. She was happiest when she was teaching and coaching. At horse shows Candie was always ready with a smile and words of encouragement for her fellow competitors.” – Frank Owens

JANE QUEENER BEST YOUNG HORSE TROPHY Olva Pharo and Spring Gathering created this award 11 years ago to Memorialize Jane S. Queener. Jane owned and bred the TB Stallion, “Jones Hall”, and loved watching her own, and all of the young horses show in the Hunter Breeding. Once shown here in Texas, she sent many of her sire’s progeny on to the East Coast to compete, as she believed that “the good ones will be rewarded anywhere”! When not petting a soft young muzzle, Jane could be found helping out at the local Texas shows, giving out awards, cheering on others, showing thanks to all of the many people involved, and appreciating the endless hours that it takes to put on a first class show such as The Spring Gathering! Huge thanks to Olva Pharo for making such a beautiful trophy, and even creating the smaller replicas for the owner(s) to keep and cherish for years to come.

His father, Daniel Bedoya, Sr., is an accomplished Jumper with seven National Championships in Bolivia and is now a trainer in Austin. With that, it’s of no surprise that Daniel has been on the back of a horse since he was a child and has over 30 years of experience in the show ring. After leaving Austin to start his own farm, Daniel followed in his parents footsteps and also made his business a family affair. He is the owner of Bedoya Training Stables in Magnolia, and runs the facility with wife and trainer, Lindsay. They have an energetic 8-year-old daughter, Natalia, that you can ﬁnd running around the show grounds, but hasn’t quite caught the riding bug. Daniel grew up in La Paz, Bolivia where he won several National Championships as a junior and represented his country in international competition as well as Young Riders.

This past summer, Daniel and Quattro headed to compete for Bolivia in the 2018 World Equestrian Games. This is the ﬁrst time that anyone from Bolivia has qualiﬁed and competed for the country. The Main Arena stands were full as Daniel’s fans watched the equestrian games on the video wall during Fall Classic at Great Southwest Equestrian Center. Even though he competed for Bolivia, he is still one of the “Texas boys,” and there was a great energy as everyone cheered him on. When not in the show ring, Daniel trains and prepares riders to show in the hunters, jumpers and equitation divisions. Young horse development is a speciality and passion for Daniel. He has trained and sold many successful horses that he started from the ground up— Quattro being one of those.

In more recent years Daniel has competed in and won Grand Prixs on the national and international level and is a regular competitor in hunter divisions and Derbies. He has claimed many championships at Pin Oak, most notably rising to the top of the leader board as the Antarès Sellier Leading Grand Prix Rider with his long-time partner, Quattro, in 2015 and 2018. Daniel represents his home country of Bolivia in international competitions and has competed in FEI Classes in Wellington, Tryon, Split Rock, the American Gold Cup, and the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix.

However, this gentle giant is terrified of ponies! Quattro was the first horse Daniel won a Grand Prix and FEI class on, he is the first horse Lindsay competed on in a Grand Prix and the first horse that Natalia trotted on. Quattro has been Daniel’s long-time partner and the two have made quite a name for themselves around the country. Daniel has had Quattro since he was 5-years-old, making this one horse he has a very special bond with. “It’s really special because I took him to his first horse show ever. Now he’s winning grand prixs,” said Daniel. Quattro has placed in over 70 Grand Prixs and was the Leading Horse at Pin Oak in 2015 and 2018. Whether it is winning championships across the country, competing in FEI Classes or

even in the World Equestrian Games; this Bay makes jumping a clear round seem effortless. “He was really difficult at the beginning because he’s 18 hands, and he has Quasimodo Z on his bloodlines. They have a little bit of a hard mouth. Being so big, and you can tell, I’m not really big; he was really hard. It took a lot of time to get him fit and to get him responsive, especially to turn and to slow down. He always had the jump, but it was difficult to turn and to slow him down. That was the most difficult part about him. He’s getting to the point that he’s beating horses that are a lot smaller and quicker, because he’s so big that I can do less strides everywhere. I can always leave strides, and he’s careful enough that I can do that, and he still leaves them up.” - Daniel Bedoya, from an interview with Kentucky Horse Shows in 2015 after he and Quattro won the $25,000 Grand Prix.

Frankie was born into the horse world! Frankie’s parents, Candie & Frank, had already established their careers as professionals, owning a business and showing, so they started Frankie and his sister Whitney riding very early on. Frankie began showing at 14-years-old and after spending just one year as an amateur, competing in the amateur owner jumpers, he turned professional at age 19. Currently, Frankie competes in the Hunter and Jumper divisions. He also is a trainer at their family farm, Oakwell Farms and coaches riders of all ages. He is very serious and dedicated at taking his students to the top. Frankie is great with young horses; having trained many from their first jumps to the show ring. One of his first young horses he started from an unbroke brood mare, and took her all the way up to the Grand Prix level; and the horse won her very first Grand Prix! He takes the time to instill confidence in the young horses, which is very important when starting them. It should be of no surprise that Frankie has quite a few championships under his belt. He won the Walter Oil & Gas $25,000 Grand Prix in 2017 and the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby in 2018 at Pin Oak. He is a multi-time champion at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center’s Texas Winter Series, and just had a great four weeks this past February, placing first in the Week I $10,000 International Hunter Derby, Week II Pyranha $25,000 Grand Prix and Week III Antarès Sellier $25,000 Grand Prix. Frankie has won Grand Prixs in Gulfport, LA and Nashville, TN and the Hunter Derby in Tyler, TX. “I am excited for Pin Oak. It is always one of the Premier showwe attend each year and always look forward to it.” - Frankie

Both Frankie and Whitney have competed on her and with great success. Most recently, Amy was the mare Frankie placed ﬁrst with in the Texas Winter Series Pyranha $25,000 Grand Prix. while they were out on the road. With a quick reply, “Yeah, me,” Natalee landed herself a job!

At 8-years-old Natalee started riding and found her calling. She would stay after her lessons to do chores around the barn to earn extra rides. Her parents told her that as long as she took lessons and stuck with it, they would eventually buy her a horse of her own. “I still joke with my dad that 30 years have gone by and I’m still waiting,” said Natalee.

No doubt that Natalee has definitely worked hard to be where she is at— but even more so after an accident in 2017 involving a 2’ x 6’ board falling on her head, leaving her in critical condition and nearly ended her career. She was determined and fought hard to get back in the saddle and just seven months later, she was competing again.

In 2000, she took a job as a rider in the show at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. The company didn’t typically hire women for that position, but she had impressed the head trainer, so he hired her anyway. While there, she worked with a long-rein horse trained to piaffe and levade as well as riding in a quadrille and performing some Grand Prix dressage movements. She credits part of her success to that trainer, Marcial Contreras, for giving her a chance, taking her under his wing and teaching her all he did. She always loved jumping though, so after three years Natalee left Medival Times to return to the show ring.

Pin Oak will always be a show that has a special place in Natalee’s heart.

In 2014, Natalee borrowed a young hunter for a show from MTM Farm and when she returned it the following week, Tracy Fenney asked her if she knew anyone that could take care of their farm

“I just rode whatever I could swing a leg over. While not having the financial means to show in a rated show until my early 20s, I always dreamt of getting to show in classes like the Pin Oak Grand Prix.” In 2018, Natalee was finally able to compete in her very first Grand Prix— the Wells Fargo $30,000 Grand Prix on MTM Full House during Week III of Pin Oak. “[Fuller] was the only horse to jump double clean, making winning surreal. I am so fortunate to have the support of Mike McCormick, Tracy Fenney and the rest of our MTM team. They have given me knowledge, encouragement and opportunities that I would not otherwise have and I am forever grateful. “

11-Y E AR - O LD H A N O V E RIAN G ELD ING B Y F O R P LEASU R E OW NE D B Y M TM FA R M Tracy Fenney and Mike McCormick of MTM Farm imported “Fuller” in 2015 as a sales horse. In 2016, Tracy jumped in a few grand prixs with him, but ended up handing him over to Natalee not long before her accident. Natalee and Fuller have a special bond, not only did he wait for her to recover, he was also the horse she won her very first Grand Prix with. “I believe we have an atypical bond that allows us to compete at that level. Fuller jumps in an unorthodox style, but has the heart of a winner. He always gives a 110% in and out of the show ring and steps up when he is challenged. He is also the first to greet me when I walk into the barn with a loud neigh ‘hello.’ -Natalee Fuller definitely made it known during the Faces of Pin Oak photoshoot that he thought he was the star and Natalee was just accompanying him. There was lots of laughing and many bloopers that day. Fuller would step in front of Natalee just as Karinda would get the perfect shot lined up, and he would push her out of the way with his head so that he was the main focus in

the photo. He has a spunky personality, that’s for sure, and was a ton of fun to spend the evening with. We hope this team has another amazing year at Pin Oak and cannot wait to see how many more championships they take home.

She began riding at 2-years-old, started taking saddleseat lessons at 6-years-old and has been on a horse ever since! She rides with Beasom Stable / Foster Farm in Wylie, Texas as an Amateur.

Catherine is a second generation client of the Cates/Beasom family. Michael Beasom, owner and trainer of Beasom Stables, got his start taking lessons at his grandparents’ farm as a child. After his grandfather, Elton Cates, passed in1993 his grandmother, Beulah, took over all the training at the farm. She was Catherine’s mother’s trainer. Not long after her husband passed, Beulah broke her femur and during that time Michael took over duties as head trainer— he was only 15-years-old. Following in her mother’s foot steps, Catherine started riding saddleseat and Saddlebreds, and training with Michael Beasom. 2015 was an exciting year for Catherine, winning the World’s Championship at Louisville, a National Championship title in Kansas City and the Saddle Seat Equitation qualifier at Pin Oak. “Catherine may have spoken for all of them – and anyone else engaged in the pursuit of equitation perfection – after her win when she said, ‘I felt like all the little stuff we’d been working on paid off, and it’s the little things that count,’” said Saddle & Bridle Magazine after her Pin Oak win. In 2018, she had another winning streak at Pin Oak, taking both Championships in Five-Gaited Amateur/Junior Exhibitor and Three-Gaited Country Pleasure. When asked what she loved

On a recent day, she stood in the middle of the arena watching a student warming up for a lesson. Carli called out to her, “ KN OCK,

KN OCK.”

The student looked at her quizzically. After a long pause she came back with the standard response: “ WHO’S THER E?” “ SN OW.” “ SN OW W HO?” “ SN OW U SE. THE HOR SE DOESN ’T U N DER STA N D WHAT YOU ’R E ASKI N G FOR .”

They laughed and the lesson began. While deeply serious about horsemanship, training and competing, Carli has found that moments of levity can engage a student on a different level.

STARTING WITH SUPPORT “You don’t have to be a drill sergeant about things. It can’t be drill after drill after drill,” Carli said. “People don’t just come into my arena and I say, ‘Okay, pick up your irons and let’s go do a couple laps.’ As their coach and mentor, I ask things like how their day was, things that show I genuinely care about them and their horse. Then we get down to the work.” Carli, 32, learned early on the importance of a supportive atmosphere. When she was 14 or 15 and a working student, a group from the barn went to watch the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, which is part of the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup tour. “I’m a kid in awe watching my idols and say, ‘I just can’t wait to be here some day and jump a grand prix!’ Everyone —even my trainer —turned and looked at me. They laughed and someone said, ‘You?A grand prix rider?Yeah, right. Your mother will never buy you a grand prix horse.’” “I was so broken-hearted,” Carli said. “That night I called my mother in tears and said, ‘Mom, I love this sport with all C A R LI AND BELLA AT HI PI CO

Those kids were right about one thing,” she said. “My mom never bought me a grand prix horse. I had to make it. Between my determination, my mom’s knowledge and skill and our teamwork, it happened. We did it together.” Her mother, Melany Kirsch, an accomplished rider and trainer, is still Carli’s coach and greatest supporter. Melany acquired North Houston Horse Park when her daughter was 2, and they manage it together. She may not have bought Carli a grand prix horse, but, Carli said, her mother made it happen for her. Her grand prix horse-to-be came to her 12 years ago in an unexpected way. Carli was in Europe with friends helping them try sales horses. She ended up finding what she wasn’t looking for.

SHF Enterprise’s goal is to be synonymous with young jumpers. Today, SHF maintains the core of its business in the breeding, development and training of show jumpers. At its base an hour west of Houston and at various locations in Europe, SHF produces youngsters for competition and sale from its broodmares, many of which were acquired specifically for breeding because of their bloodlines and performance characteristics. At the farm in Texas, SHF produces and trains many of the horses it has bred and also offers training services to outside horses and riders. Sparky

Sparky leads the SHF team. As a junior rider, Sparky attended Kinkaid and competed across the nation based in Texas before moving to Virginia to attend Foxcroft and base her training and competition on the East Coast with Joe Fargis. In the late 1990s and early 2000s she was the beneficiary of USET developmental programs and opportunities including Developing Riders at Gladstone 1999, competing at the Festival of Champions at Gladstone in 2001 and competing in multiple equitation finals, including the USET Equitation Finals East in numerous years. She received her USET Equitation Silver and Bronze Medals. She began competing in Europe in 2009 with Jur Vreiling (NL) and established residency in the Netherlands in 2011. She has served the USHJA as a committee member of the Emerging Athletes Program, served Pin Oak Charity Horse Show as its youngest board member in history (2005), served as a demo rider for the 2000 Olympic Media Summit, interned with the USEF, and completed an MBA internship review in strategy and finance with Tattersalls Ireland, The British National Stud, Newmarket Race Course and Plumpton Racecourse in the UK. Sparky has trained with and worked with lifelong horsemen, leaders in their fields and Olympians. The list of equestrians and teachers who have made and are still making a lasting impact on Sparky’s perspective and practice is long. Inspired by her experience and love of horses and the sport, Sparky is committed to the sustainability of equestrian sport and to increasing educational opportunities in the equine and Houston communities. With more than twenty years of high level show jumping experience, undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rice University, and an unyielding drive to make a lasting impact, Sparky and the Team at SHF are working to provide education, opportunities and access for equestrians and horse enthusiasts in Houston and across the nation.

Crosstraining is one of my favorite ways to accomplish training while stimulating the horse’s mind, as well as their body, but it’s also a great way to keep training fun and varied. Changing footing, location of rides, trail riding in safe footing, and even sprints across a safe pasture

You’re packing for a horse show, making a list, checking (more than) twice… If you’re anything like me when I was showing my horses, nerves will be reaching the wave point of “We can totally hold our own” to “I should just scratch” in about 5-minute intervals between loading the saddle and the bridle. You’ve practiced and trained. Maybe you’ve had your horse for a long time and this is the first major show moving to a more difficult level. Maybe you just purchased your horse a few months ago and this is your first time to show what you’ve got. Maybe your horse had an injury and this is the first time you’re stepping back into the ring, which is usually where most of the “what-ifs” come creeping in. Congratulations, no matter your situation! You have prepared for this! But, how do you keep your horse sound and continuing to show at their highest potential? That’s the age-old question with so many different answers, none of which are the magic pill to make everything alright. Each horse and each rider are different and need individual recommendations. This is why having a trusted team of your veterinarian, farrier, and trainer are so important. However, there are bigpicture points that can help extend your horse’s longevity in the show ring, but also for their overall health and well being.

can all add to the horse’s mental and physical health. Try riding in a different arena, or just hacking out in a pasture a few days a week. This will stimulate the horse’s proprioception (how they know where their body is in space) to become more fine-tuned, as well as allow their bones and muscle to adapt to harder or softer footing. Bone reacts by increasing density when it meets a harder impact. By the same token, tendons, ligaments, and muscle all need varied forms of tension and concussion to remodel and become stronger. By changing the expected course or altering the footing, the body will adapt and ultimately become stronger. Always consult with your trainer and veterinarian if the footing may not be adequate as extremely deep, irregular, or slippery surfaces can lead to injury. Be careful in your choices, as always, but try to avoid the same arena rut.

HILLS If you have access to any outdoor hills, use them! All joints in the body are stabilized by muscles that attach above or below them (in the form of tendons). If you’ve ever run up or down a hill, you know what muscles scream the next day. Those are the muscles that stabilize your knee. The stifle joint, the same type of joint as the human knee, is almost entirely stabilized by soft-tissue structures such as tendons and ligaments, and cushioned

RESISTANCE BANDS

C ORE ST RE N GT H A N D SPIN E STAB IL IT Y A newer thought process for strengthening the horse’s abdominal muscles is through the use of resistance bands. Before you think of a YouTube exercise star or InstaFitness Influencer, these bands are different from human bands, but serve a similar purpose. The system that is most studied is called the Equiband System by Equicore. It attaches to the saddle pad and engages the core by strapping below the horse’s hindquarters and under the abdomen. This system has been shown to stabilize the back muscles by helping strengthen muscles responsible for side-to-side (lateral) and updown (dorsoventral) movement. They also strengthen by soft cartilage and menisci. When a horse trains uphill and downhill, the muscles that cause the stifle joint to flex/extend are strengthened many times more than when worked on flat ground. By introducing hill work into your training regime, your horse’s stifles will become stronger over time, thereby reducing the chance of stifle injury. Many of my patients who have been recovering from stifle injuries benefit greatly from controlled hillwork. Endurance can sometimes be a downfall of some horses, especially if they are older or are trained very well. If your horse does not need to be ridden for training purposes as often as others, I encourage you to utilize hacks or light rides to increase endurance and stamina. Many horse shows are weeks long and those weeks are exhausting for these guys. To have the energy to go back into the arena for a jump-off a few minutes after your round may be too much if your horse can’t find that extra push to get through it. Schedule days when you either only work on sprints, or long-distance trotting sessions (here’s where those trail rides come in handy). By incorporating endurance and sprints into your horse’s training you will enable them to be strong enough to continue when they would normally be done for the day after one round. Don’t forget to schedule active recovery days for them, as well. This is where hacks in the field are the best for everyone involved! Overtraining can lead to overuse injuries and muscle fatigue. Give those muscles you have been working so hard to build a chance to recover and rebuild.

NUTRITION I can’t stress how important adequate nutrition is to horses who are performing. Each horse’s dietary needs vary based on their metabolism and if they have any underlying health issues. Consult your veterinarian for any advice specific to your horse. Guidelines to follow are the horse should be eating a high-quality forage (hay) and be supplemented with a high-quality grain if needed. Horses gain their energy from fermenting forage in their colon and cecum, so grain is not their most needed resource. If you are unsure of the nutrient content of your hay, you can take a core sample and send it to the state. In Texas, you can send those samples to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office Soil, Water, and Forage Testing Laboratory. Your horse’s needs also depend on the amount of energy they are burning when working. If you have a horse competing in Grand Prix events, they will likely be under a higher caloric demand and burns carbohydrates and fat efficiently. If your horse does some shorter Hunter rounds or is a walk-trot pony, they will not need as much energy reserves. If your horse is a lean body type, they may need more calories to offset their higher metabolic needs, while “easy keepers” are unlikely to burn the calories as efficiently. PROPER HOOF CARE Most show horses’ hoof care is regularly managed every 6 weeks, but I recommend having your veterinarian and farrier work together to review radiographs of their feet at least every 6 months. This helps be sure no underlying changes are taking place that could cause future soundness issues. With hooves, early detection is key. Radiographs can tell you more about the hoof health than anyone can see visually. Working together with farriers, trainers, and riders, radiographs help veterinarians guide the team to keep the horse on track.
