Proud Saddle Partner of PWC

On the Trail r Riding through old ranch roads of the beautiful Henry W. Coe State Park in Northern California, Sue Dekalb has surpassed the 7,500 hours mark for the Pinto Horse Association’s On the Trail Program. At 7 years old, Dekalb dreamed of having her own horse when her neighbor got one. It did not take long before Dekalb tagged along with her friend and started taking riding lessons as well. Dekalb’s wish for a horse finally came true. In 1962, her parents bought her a Morgan/Quarter Horse cross. She spent the next five years showing her horse in Gymkhana, Western Pleasure and Halter classes. Dekalb gained impressive awards at a young age. In 1970, she earned the high point senior western champion in her region and in the state of California. “My goal had been to win the

state and my region; I accomplished both those tasks,” Dekalb said. After ending her show career, Dekalb spent the next 33 years working full time at Tandem Computers, Compaq Computers and Hewlett Packard as a software designer, and spent her free time trail riding with her Quarter horse. “Even though I didn’t want the grind of showing anymore, I still liked having goals and a purpose,” Dekalb said. “I just wanted to ride and enjoy my horses without having to drive all over the state of California to compete.” In 1991, she started logging her hours for the AQHA Horseback Riding Program and continued doing so until 2002. At this time, she was riding her gelding Docs Thomas HB. She said she was not able to reach her goal of 5,000 hours due to her horse developing laminitis.

Courtesy Photo: Sue Dekalb Below, Sue Dekalb with her horse Docs Not Fooling, Duddy.

In 2003 Dekalb looked for a new horse, buying a solid paint gelding named Docs Solid Impression, also known as Doc. While visiting this horse, and knowing she had to have him, she noticed another nice Paint horse that turned out to be Doc’s son. Dekalb, soon after buying Doc, joined the APHA Ride America program so her and Doc could continue to reach her goal. As well as trail riding, Dekalb is a uniformed volunteer for Henry W. Coe State Park and also helps with the Mounted Assistance Unit for the park. During her rides, she spends about five days a week horseback riding and taking pictures of flowers and wildlife. “I take pictures from horseback and then use them to inform visitors about wildlife in the park,” Dekalb said. “I usually ride by myself since my goal is to find wildlife and not scare it off.” In 2005, Dekalb retired from Hewlett Packard and decided to look for another horse because she did not want to exhaust Doc by riding him at the park every day. Dekalb contacted the people she bought Doc from and asked if they were interested in selling his son, Docs Not Fooling, also known as Duddy. While looking at Duddy, she found out he could not be registered as a Paint horse. Dekalb decided she did not care and bought the horse. “It didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to have a goal with him too; so I decided to register him as a Pinto,” Dekalb said. Soon after purchasing Duddy, Dekalb joined the PtHA On the Trail Program and have been logging in hours ever since. “Doc and I finally completed our goal of 10,000 hours in the APHA Ride America program last December, after 10 years,” Dekalb said. “Duddy and I

SPREAD THE WORD

Scholarship Deadline is January 15, 2015. Please download all forms from www.pinto. org/youth and mail them to the office. Postmark by January 15.

Attend the Color Breed Congress for another chance at scholarship money! A total of $2,500 will be divided between the top youth in each breed. Money will be redeemable upon enrollment in college.

AMATEUR

hey youth!

Don’t forget to renew your amateur card as well as your individual membership. Do this early to avoid the day-before-the-show rush. You can check the PtHA Rulebook if you need details on what qualifies as an amateur with the association.

Have you become a fan of the new Pinto Horse Youth Facebook page yet? Search for Pinto Horse Youth Association and “like” it today! It was created by Pinto Youth, for Pinto Youth to help you stay up to date and in the know on all things PtHYA.

FACEBOOK FRIENDS REPRESENT

Represent your state at national PtHA functions! Be a Youth Director! As a Youth Director, you will be able to represent your state at national meetings in addition to informing the youth in your area of national activities. This is also the only way to be eligible to become an officer of PtHYA! To become a Youth Director, simply fill out the application found on www.pinto.org/youth and return it to the PtHA office. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified in January of acceptance. The number of Youth Directors allowed per state corresponds to the number allowed for PtHA Board of Directors. To see how many directors are allowed in your state, check the youth page of www.pinto.org. In the case where more members from the same state apply than are allowed, the director will be chosen on PtHA involvement and potential service.
