The Chios Mastic Museum is located in the Mastichochoria, a group ofmedieval villages in Southern Chios, the only site in the Mediterranean where the skinosplantofthe variation Pistacia lentiscus Chia is cultiνated,fromwhichgum mastic isproduced.
TheaimoftheChiosMasticMuseumistohighlight theproductionhistory ofthe cultiνationandprocessing of mastic, also incorporating it to the cultural landscape of Chios. Through the inclusion of traditional mastic cultiνation in the Representative Listof lntangible Cultural HeritageofHumanity by UNESCO in 2014, the emphasis ison thetimelessnessandthe sustainabilityoftheproductofChios.
The permanentexhibition hasbeen organizedon thebasisofthefindingsoftheextensiveinterdisciplinary research programmeaboutmastic, undertaken by thePiraeus BankGroupCultural Foundation. Visitorsdiscoverthe traditional know-howofmastic cultiνation, understand how the management of mastic shaped the agricultural and inhabited landscape in the southofChios, learn abouta significant aspectofthe history ofproductionin Greece,andsee thespreadingandvarioususesofmastic.The museum experience iscompletedbyavisittotheopen-air exhibition where νisitors become acquainted with the mastic tree exactly during the cultivation phase atthattimeoftheyear.
The Chios Mastic Museum was created by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, which has alsoundertaken itsoperation.lt is housed inabuildingspeciallydesignedforthemuseumonlandgrantedbytheChiosGum Mastic GrowersAssociation.The project was included in the Operational Programme "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship" OPCE 11, throughthe NationalStrategic Reference Framework 2007-2013, and was co-financed by the PubliclnvestmentProgramme andthe European Regional Development Fund.
