NOTE FROM THE HEADMISTRESS I am delighted to introduce the 2016/17 edition of “Junior Aquila”. Through its pages I hope that you will be able to gain a sense of the varied day-to-day life of our Pre-Prep and Prep Departments. There are many examples of the girls’ work and photographs from the interesting visits and activities they have participated in throughout the course of the academic year. It is always a huge pleasure for me to visit the girls in their classrooms and see first-hand how much they enjoy learning new skills and gaining knowledge. I have been most impressed by the enthusiasm and energy shown by

all the girls in Pre-Prep and Prep this year, the dedication and commitment they have shown in the many dance, drama and musical performances they have been involved in, their willingness to engage as members of the school community and their ambitions to raise money for charity and help those less fortunate than themselves. This year we asked the girls to tell us what they had enjoyed most themselves

about the year so do look out for some of the quotations that are included throughout this magazine. I look forward to sharing in the girls’ future successes as they move on to their new challenges in September. Happy reading! Helen Ness-Gifford Headmistress

THE ROYAL T IMES The girls have been developing their skills in history this year, learning how to use historical sources to gain an understanding of the lives of significant figures from the past who have contributed to national and international life. One of the people they learnt about was Queen Elizabeth. The girls began with a portrait of the Queen as a stimulus and following this they delved into the Queen’s past, finding out about the events in her life and ordering them into a timeline.

THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON

2 September 1666 Dear Diary Today I can see a great fire. I’m so scared because it is really big. It started because the buildings are all made of wood and straw so when it started it easily burned the whole of London. So many man have tried to put out the fire using water from the River Thames. People are rushing out of their homes to try and put the fire out. The fire started on Pudding Lane and spread from house to house. The only good thing is that the fire got rid of the disease started by the rats. Sorry I have to go now to help put out the fire. Saanvi K

MY MONSTER PENGUIN Penguin waddles side to side, Over the brow of the hill. Black and white business suit, Briefcase filled with fish. Rounded tummy bulging, Funny old man swaying, Side to side, side to side. Not time for a rest, On the way to his nest. Year 3 Class Poem

He is nasty, mean and horrible. He has dangerous eyes that shoot lasers whenever he is angry. Every day he wakes up cross because he has smelly, bad breath. He has green claws, a curly tail and pointed teeth. Sometimes he is a naughty thief who steals people’s food. He eats until he vomits and is quite fat. His skin has dry scales and he is bright green. He is always scratching himself. He sleeps in a hole underground and often cries because he has no friends. Sometimes he goes up to people and acts cute. Amber K

“I LOVED HAVING MISS EAGLES AS A TEACHER.” Katie C

My monster lives in a cave in Switzerland. The cave is dark and scary. He is quite funny and he is ticklish. He is only ticklish behind the horns and behind the tentacles. He loves to jump in muddy puddles and he does NOT like having baths. Mummy monster makes him have them because if he doesn’t have them then he really stinks. In summer time little monster gets his favourite ice-cream – chocolate. He plays in the garden and gets very messy.

My monster lives in a top secret underwater cave. The monster’s home has four ferocious electric eels guarding the entrance. The inside of the monster’s lair is even worse – it is dark and even uglier than the monster himself! Although the monster is really ugly because his dirty shrivelled skin is a revolting mucus green. He always drools absolutely disgusting saliva. Also on his long slimy tentacles are squishy suckers. Inside my monster’s big mouth there are huge pointy teeth. Stella H

ELEPHANT When I woke up this morning and looked out of the window, I couldn’t believe what I saw!

BUTTERFLY

There was a line of elephants holding each other’s tails. Looking like a line of school children,

Beautiful butterfly flutter over here

Stomping in a line, ready for assembly.

Come whisper how your day was in my ear.

I could feel the earth tremble as each of them took a step.

I won’t touch you, I won’t move,

They all had long trunks and huge ears,

Just fly over here and go with the groove.

That were flapping in the wind.

There’s no need to tremble, I only want to look at your colourful wings,

Stella H

And for you to tell me how your day has been. No pretty butterfly, don’t fly away, Flit over here, I only want to play. Kate C

OWLS

Girls in Year 3 listened to the Greek myth telling of how Athena became the goddess of Athens with the owl as her symbol of wisdom. They made their own drawings of owls and then used these as inspiration for the design and development of a Greek-inspired owl. Their designs were executed in clay relief, using tools to impress patterns, then burnished with gold paint to finish.

Mud running down him like melted wax on a candle

ON TOP OF THE WORLD

THE SNOWY WOOD

I was standing at the top of the slope. My skiing instructor had just told me to go down the biggest slope for the first time. My legs were shaking, my teeth were chattering. I was about to say “no” when my instructor pushed me and I went speeding down the slope. As I went down I screamed at the top of my lungs with fright! I thought I was going to crash into the trees ahead. “What if I fall?” was repeating over and over in my head! Even though there was a straight path in the snow I thought a tree would reach out one of his arms and trip me up! But before I knew it, it was over and I wanted to do it all over again!

As I wandered through the lonely snow-dusted wood I could hear my boots crunching in the snow. I wondered what it would have looked like in the boiling hot mid-summer months. As I crunched on I could hear the trees whispering in my ears. Occasionally I could hear the odd bird tweeting, asking for food. I wished that I could climb up one of the many trees surrounding me just to see the beautiful white carpet covering England. I touched a tree and cold suddenly shot up my fingers. The snow was freezing – it felt like I had just touched the ice in the Antarctic. The snow started to fall again and I wished it could be snowy like this every day. Slowly I wandered on towards more snow-dusted trees. The carpet of snow looked like it went on forever. I felt like I was the only person for miles. It felt magical.

THE CHECKPOINT

THE CHECKPOINT

I got to the first checkpoint and it came to my mind how I was going to escape. The refuse lorry was there and the soldiers were running pitifully, looking for their rain capes. I had to make a run for it. I sprinted carefully so that they didn’t hear my flip flops until I got to a place I recognised. It was only another corner to go – I turned and there was a checkpoint. There were no soldiers so I started to run. Then three men appeared – I jumped and tripped over the rubble. “What are you doing here?” one of the soldiers asked. I was speechless and didn’t know what to say. Why was I here? The other soldier took me by the arm and said that I was a deaf mute. So I played along and pretended that was true.

When I finally arrived at the checkpoint I asked for some oil from the food truck but a man said it hadn’t arrived just yet. Then to make matters worse it started to pour with rain. A nice man told me to hop it so I didn’t catch a cold or get in. I was so used to being obedient that I started slowly walking away. Behind me I hear a man say “Where did you put the rain coats?” and then a man with a much deeper voice said that he put them in the jeep. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the food truck – so did the man. I saw my chance and took it – I ran until my legs were aching. It was hard to dodge all the rubble and bomb shells. It brought back memories of me and Mama walking down this street. It seemed like the road got longer and longer but then I saw a flag in the distance. It wasn’t my flag though – it was the enemy’s. Their checkpoint looked deserted so I thought I could easily jump over and be on my way. As I was about to jump over something grabbed my dress. I turned round and saw it was enemy soldiers. They shook me and said I wasn’t allowed there and asked me who I was. But I couldn’t speak. Then he asked me in a horrid way “Are you deaf?”. I pretended that I was, but they still thought I was something like a spy. Luckily another man said “She’s innocent let her go”. The men who were holding me did as they were told and then I ran faster than I had ever run before without looking back.

ONE DAY I WOULD LIKE TO…

ONE SUMMER MORNING

…travel the world! I would like to do this following in my Father’s footsteps. Why did my Dad travel the world? His Father was an engineer on an Anchor Butter boat and he had the opportunity to take his family along. Dad was about nine when he started travelling. My Grandmother was a teacher so she taught him on the journey. They lived on the boat but when they were docked, they explored the areas. Dad’s favourite country was New Zealand. I would like our family to visit New Zealand too. Our whole family could take a gap year to travel the world on a cruise ship. My education would be covered – older sister (English), older brother (Maths), parents and online school. Why New Zealand? I love the extreme sports such as sky diving, white water rapids and bungee jumping. Another location could be the USA and the Grand Canyon. I would also like to go to Hawaii both for the culture and for hula skirts! Is this an unrealistic wish, just a dream, or the opportunity of a lifetime? I plan to talk to my Grandma and Dad about their memories. Maybe we could call on her after we come down from Aberystwyth. Mum loves adventures so she could be persuaded. It would be fun as well as educational! Cara L

One summer morning when the sand is blowing in your face The mums are chattering and the boys are playing chase. It is as warm as a volcano. The dads are splashing like they are elephants The sea is getting warmer as the time goes by. But what’s that sound? It’s the birds flying by. The children looked like snowmen, With the sun cream down their face. The sand is so hot as you tiptoe across. But now the summer’s ending and the beach is no more It is sad to watch the time go by, As I sit and watch the shore. Evie M

THE MYSTERIOUS FOREST I woke to the sounds of beautiful humming birds singing an enchanting melody, beneath the wispy white clouds of Enchancia. The coldness from the emerald green leaves splattered across my face and down through the rest of my body. I was shocked to still be lying beneath the huge canopy of treetops which was like a vivid green umbrella. I had visited the magnificent forest of tall trees yesterday, searching for rare animal species with my dog, Bubbles. I had become so tired I had gone to lie down under a spidery knot of trees and bushes. Suspiciously I had not woken up

until this morning! I didn’t know what had happened but needed to start heading home with Bubbles. I started on my journey through the forest with Bubbles by my side. In the far away distance something caught my eye. It looked like some greenish mist. I started to get this eerie and spooky sensation! Something in my body told me to take a few more steps, but just at that moment I felt as if someone or something was lurking near me – just out of sight… Chloe D

Eladora, a 15 year old girl said, “I love this invention because it’s so cute!” Delphina, an elderly lady from Buckinghamshire, says her real dogs will be scared but she is looking forward to getting her Robo-dog. Daisy D (the inventor of this incredible invention) will be at the “Invention Convention 2017” to show off a prototype of the Robo-dog. We think that Robo-dogs will become popular world-wide but what do you think? Post your answer at TotallyNotFakeWebsite@ NewsReport.com Daisy D

T ITANIC DIARY

Me, my Mum, my Dad and my big sister were sat out on the deck. My Mum was stroking my hair, there was a nice breeze and some mist. It was 11.25pm and I couldn’t sleep so my Mum said I could sit with her and my sister. The sea was sparkling in the moonlight. My Dad felt sick so he went to bed. After a while I was getting hungry and a bit sleepy so I went to the restaurant and got an orange. I ate half of it and gave the rest to my sister but she refused to have it so I put it in my cardigan pocket for later. My sister carried me in her arms to the third class bedroom we were staying in. My parents could not afford a better room. My sister laid me down in the bottom bunk – my Dad was in the top. There are two bunk beds in each room but we could only afford one so there were complete strangers sleeping only a metre away from us. There were stains on the walls and it was so small in there that

there was not any space for luggage. I watched my Dad reading a book and looking annoyed as the people next to him were snoring. That’s when it happened – I heard something and my sister grabbed my hand and held it tight. My Mum came running in screaming about the ship sinking. She took my hand and started to run. My Dad wouldn’t come with us as he said if we have hit an ice-berg we had no chance of escape. Mum pulled my sister and me away. Most people were screaming, some were complaining and some weren’t doing anything – like my Dad. I was crying, so was my sister and Mother. It wasn’t because we thought we were going to die but it was because I knew if Dad came with us we would survive as a family, but hope was lost.

was a bad dream and I couldn’t wake up but it wasn’t. Me and my sister watched the boat sink. I reached in to my pocket and found the other half of my orange. It was wet and cold but I had a piece and gave the rest to my sister. I was wet and cold and shaking like mad. My sister looked really sad and was worried that we would die of hyperthermia. We sat there for hours until we finally saw the bright light of a larger boat that had come to rescue us. I was so happy I cried. And that is the real story of what happened on the Titanic. Sophie C

The ship started to sink – faster and faster. All I could think was “We’re not going to make it”. Then I saw the lifeboats. My sister and I ran as fast as we could – my Mum got lost in the crowd. My sister and I jumped into the water and swam as fast as we could. We got onto a boat but it was very crowded and scary. I felt like it
