W
elcome to the latest edition of Highline Magazine and also to the most exciting time of the speedway year down-under. Over the next month or so we’ll see, the Scott Darley Challenge, the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and companion events, the Australian Sprintcar Title, the Australian Speedcar Championship, the Australian Wingless Sprint Championship, the Australian Late Model Championship and various other significant events being run and won around the country. Wow. Elsewhere in this magazine you’ll see our brief rating of contenders for the two biggest Sprintcar events of the year amongst a host of awesome action photos from around the country. QSS WSS (Queensland Speedway Spares World Series Sprintcars) was relaunched into its 31st year as “Showtime” with a lot of hype and hyperbole and so far the racing has been pretty good. But one thing that hasn’t changed it seems is the lack of media pre and post the event.

When you talk the talk about being the country’s pre-eminent Sprintcar series, and you take a cast of many on the road, then why is it so hard to get media out to the industry and the fans. Many media personnel have asked me “where’s the media or even the results?” I don’t know. When I asked one of the series’ main organisers he stated that he was sure my name was on the media list to receive the releases. Well, I can tell you fans that you are not the only ones missing out. This issue was highlighted last year where WSS was relying on the individual tracks to do it. That it just rubbish. The other thing we’re told is that they get it out by midday the next day. That is not good enough either for our “premier” series. Something needs to be issued as soon as possible after the event even if it’s just a paragraph or two with the top five results, but yet, nothing.
various tracks around the country. Yet, their own WSS officials head out onto the track each night with either a green (same colour as the grass) shirt or a blue one. At one venue, one of the team later on put a black jacket over that because it was getting cold – very hi-vis. Thankfully someone eventually handed him a hi-vis vest to put over his black coat. Smacks of hypocrisy to me. This is not WSS bashing as Highline has personally attended rounds of WSS wearing our hi-vis clothing but merely constructive criticism of some issues that can easily be addressed for the whole of the sport. WSS and SA need to lead by example. It’s not a case of don’t do as I do, do as I say. Anyway, we hope you all enjoy this “pictorial” issue and look forward to the next issue where we will bring you exclusive pictorial coverage of most of the “big” events.
