2013 PA SPEEDWEEK FORMAT TIME TRIALS; Time trials will be single car with order determined by a blind draw. Each track has the option to conduct one or two lap time trials. Any driver missing their assigned spot by more than two positions will get one lap at the end of time trials and will not make the invert for the heat race. HEATS RACES; Heat race lineups will be set with an invert of four cars in each heat based on time trials, regardless of the number of heat races run. If three heats are held six cars will qualify. If four heats are run five cars will qualify. B-MAIN; The B-main will be aligned heads up by time. If three heats were run six cars will qualify. If four heats were run four cars will qualify. FEATURE; The top two finishers from each heat, and the top two time trialers who qualify in their heats but don’t finish in the top two will be placed into the feature inversion. These drivers will be aligned by time and the fastest qualifier will draw for an invert of 4-6-8 or 46 if inversion pool is less than 8 cars. The remainder of the field will be aligned by time regardless of whether they qualified in their heat or the B-Main. Hodnett saves Posse pride. Greg Hodnett narrowly averted a disaster when he won the 2013 rendition of the Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek (his fourth PA Speedweek crown). The pending disaster was the thought of a non Pennsylvania (PA) Posse driver winning the championship for the first time ever, and to make matters worse it was Texan Sam Hafertepe Jnr who, if not for one bad night, looked likely to break the trend. Hodnett himself knows what it feels like to come in and beat the posse as the former Memphis native was only a relatively newly deputised member of the posse when he won his first speedweek back in 2002. Hafertepe though displayed blistering speed, especially during time trials but was unlucky with a couple of mechanical issues however. Iin reality it was always going to be a huge ask for the driver of the Lone Star Speedway, Plumbfast 15H team to beat the notorious posse on their home tracks, and so Hafertepe is justifiably proud of the fact that he was able to score a feature win along the
Greg Hodnett (39) sets up for the winn way. “I couldn’t possibly be more proud,” exclaimed Sam on his sam15.com website. “Central Pennsylvania is such a tough area of the country to come in and race at so to walk out of here with a victory is such an honor and a boost for our whole team.” Admittedly Hodnett’s challenge was not as strong technically as in past years due to the absence of his ace crew chief Lee Stauffer for half of the tour due to a family wedding in Hawaii, and so it is
ning pass on erstwhile leader Danny Dietrich (48) @ Williams Grove therefore ironic that the Trone Outdoor #39 team took their only win, and a somewhat lucky win at that, on opening night without Stauffer. The 2013 tournament was schedule to be fought out over 9 events, at 7 different tracks over a 10 day period. Unfortunately the Selinsgrove finale was rained out just as teams were setting up pitside and the mid-tour Grandview event was also cancelled, possibly prematurely, due to the threat of inclement weather. The 2013 tour however, was nothing if not ultra competitive with seven different winners and as an Antipodean added extra, both Victorian star Darren Mollenoyux and Tasmanian veteran Robin Dawkins, were in action at all or some of the rounds.
Sam Hafertepe Jr. (above) stunned the locals with a new track record while Danny Dietrich (right) was in the spot light, literally, after winning heat 1 and then leading all but the last lap of the main event.
Kick-off date was June 28 at the hallowed grounds of Williams Grove where 34 cars were on hand including Aussie Molly. Hafertepe telegraphed his intensions after a 25 hour drive north from the pan handle state with a new track record cutting the only lap in the 16 second bracket during time trials. Heat wins were shared amongst Danny Dietrich, Lance Dewease, Rodney Westhaffer and Gerard McIntyre Jr. Adam Wilt led home the B-Main challengers which included Aussie Molly. The main event turned out to be a cracker when for the second week in a row a last lap pass netted the sprint car feature win at Williams Grove Speedway.
And who was the unlucky driver that almost led from go to whoa? It was double D Danny Dietrich. The win was Hodnett’s first of the season at Williams Grove and was worth $5,000. Dietrich and Chad Layton shared the front row for the start of the main event and two-time 2013 winner Dietrich took the lead at the start. Hodnett couldn’t match the speed of Dietrich but was able to close with heavy lapped traffic even drawing alongside at one point. With eight laps to go a final caution occurred and from here Hodnett was able to keep pace as Dietrich became a little erratic. Hodnett ran down the leader and was leaving no room for error with just over a lap to go when Dietrich jumped the cushion in the third and fourth turns and hit the wall while heading towards the white flag and that was all Hodnett
needed to make a run for the win. He drove to Dietrich’s inside as the pair headed out of the second turn and onto the backstretch with the lead. Dietrich tried to reclaim control with a run that saw him slap the outside backstretch wall as he shot his car into the third corner but to no avail as Hodnett went on to take his 52nd career win at Williams Grove, ranking himself fourth on the oval’s all time win list. .
“Danny was having a little problem getting off of four,” Hodnett said of Dietrich. “He hit the wall a couple laps before that.” The win was also the 23rd of Hodnett’s career in speedweek action.

timed lap at the end of the session which basically culled his chances of a solid result.
Heading into night two, redemption from Deitrich was expected as after all, he is the reigning Lincoln track champion. However, the night belonged to veteran Alan Krimes who led all 30 laps to take the $5,000 and the speedweek points lead along with it. Stevie Smith set fast time at 13.251 seconds just beating Hafertepe on 13.253. Sadly Molly had a magneto problem which meant he only got one
“It was a brand new maggie (Magneto), it doesn’t make any sense.” Stated car owner Adrian Parr afterwards. Montieth, Wilt, Dietrich and Jim Siegel (in a different car to the one he runs at the Grove) won the heats, while 23 year old former Rookie of the year at both Williams Grove and Port Royal Nicole Bower took out the B-Main in her pretty orange #75. As hard as he tried Molly couldn’t overcome his early set backs and failed to progress out of the B-Main.
Sometimes though, it’s just your night, and Speedweek feature number two belonged to veteran Alan Krimes who should now consider changing his number from 87 to 4. Krimes timed fourthquick time and finished fourth in his heat. Both Smith and Fred Rahmer finished in to top two of their heats, putting Krimes into the inversion for the feature. When Smith picked pill number four for the inversion, Krimes found himself on the pole for the “A” Main. And he didn’t waste the opportunity, outrunning 168-time Lincoln winner and 13-time Speedweek champion Rahmer to the first turn and leading every lap of the 30-lap, $5,000-to-win event for
Track champ Double D, Danny Dietrich kept the large crowd (both above) happy with a heat win while Stevie Smith (centre) set quick time.

The race was flagged off during a lap 18 red flag for a seven-car melee in turns three and four.
his third Lincoln win of the year. Lapped traffic also played into his favor in the feature. “I was pretty good on the top early,” said Krimes, “And then that yellow came out and I wasn’t as good on the top. I kinda stayed up there, but once I got around lapped cars that were running the bottom I moved down, and I felt a little bit better down there.” Krimes’ final margin of victory in his 13th career Lincoln win was 3.28 seconds.

Big Diamond – night 3. The final event of the opening stanza was set for Big Diamond Raceway but the dodgy weather from the night before almost killed the event before it began. New promoter Jake Smulley made the hard decision to push on regardless and with an infield that resembled a swamp proceeded with night 3 which turned out to be a historic event when Hafertepe (pictured) scored his first ever PA Sprint Speed Week victory and first ever Big Diamond Speedway win in the 30 lap main event. Starting from the pole position, Hafertepe bolted into the lead at the drop of the green and immediately opened up a large lead over second place running Smith. On a late race restart, Smith made a daring move into turn 2 to try and wrestle the lead from Hafertepe, but to no avail, and
the Sunnyvale steerer was able to cruise to the $5,000 victory. With a smaller field of only 24 cars it was all in for the final where Molly garnered his best result with a 9th place finish ahead of many central PA feature winners. Heats were won by Brent Marks, blow-in Brady Bacon, and Chad Layton. Fast time for the night was set by Dewease at 13.501 seconds. With the win, Hafertepe was also able to take over the points lead for the series.
Roadrunners In the sedan based Roadrunners support class Marc Berzowski picked up win #7 of the season in the 20 lap main event Berzowski took the lead from Shon Elk on a lap 13 restart needed after race long leader Kyle Killian tangled with a lapped car while completing lap 12. Elk was never far behind, and took a shot at the lead several times over the last seven laps, but was never able to overtake Berzowski. Highlights of this class included a heat where Elk and Chris Holland raced almost the entire duration side by side.

In the blow in Lasosk the stun
A drenched speedway, occasional rain showers in the morning and a forecast of afternoon and evening thunderstorms through until mid-night forced the decision to cancel the Tuesday night, July 2 event at Grandview Speedway. The 410 sprints and 358 modified double-header is always a popular event but due to weather, it was not going to happen. Sadly, as is often the case, the afternoon remained slightly overcast, and the event could possibly have been run. Who wants to be a promoter? Not me.
end there was nothing between NASCAR n Dave Blaney (#10) and challenger Danny ki (obscured) when the teams converged on nning Hagerstown Speedway for night 5.
Hagerstown – night 5.
Despite it being called the PA Speedweek, night number 5 was held at the impressive Hagerstown speedway in the state of Maryland. Equally impressive was the performance of 1995 World of Outlaws Champion Dave Blaney who flew from Charlotte, NC to race at Hagerstown on the Wednesday evening.
I’m proud of it (winning),” Blaney said. “This is cool, to come and beat these guys, they’re so good in this area. The track is so nice all the time and it’s good to race on and we thought we could learn a lot and have fun.” He showed little signs of any rust with his performance and ended by taking the $5,000 victory after a late race dog fight with Dover’s Danny Lasoski “I’m proud of it (winning),” Blaney said. “This is cool, to come and beat these guys, they’re so good in this area. We had the money spot to start (pole) and the car was good enough to hang on. We looked really bad in Ohio Speedweek and we took it home and made some changes and wanted to come over here. The track is so nice all the time and it’s good to race on and we thought we could learn a lot and have fun. “ Blaney timed fifth quick of the 30 entries but after Logan Schuchart didn’t qualify, Blaney had the pole position in the four car invert with Danny Lasoski sitting alongside while Hafertepe and quick timer Mike Wagner were in row two. Blaney opened a lead early running the long way around the topside of the track before eventually moving back to the pole line. A rare spin by Donnie Kreitz Jr closed things up for a short sprint to the flag where Blaney wasn’t able to shake off Lasoski over the final laps leading to an exciting conclusion to the event. Finally Blaney stormed off the final turn just a length ahead of Lasoski and Dewease. Blaney said, “I could hear their motors running back there so I didn’t know where to run, whether to block a little bit, so I went with where I thought was best and hung on and it worked out.”

Hodnett, Dewease (pictured dicing at right) and Hafertepe (15H speed shot previous page) were the heat winners. Bobby Allen’s grandson Logan Schuchart (bottom right) won the B main. Wagner rounded the track with fast time of 16.174 seconds. For Molly, Hagerstown produced another A-Main result after coming through the B-Main. Vintage The support category was a mix of beautifully restored vintage and veteran open wheel and sedan speedway vehicles, some of which were driven with great gusto. A couple of highlights included the fiercely driven “Lance Dewease” – Dyer Masonry – Brickmobile #461 and the superb Al Hamilton Special #78.

“Obviously it’s seven grand, but that’s far from the purpose. It was the Kevin Grobrecht Memorial. I don’t think there’s a driver that can stand out here that had more of a relationship with him than me.”- Stevie Smith in Victory Lane at the Kevin Gobrecht Memorial at Lincoln.
While at nearby Gettysburg they were packing up and relaxing from the 150 th anniversary July 4 re-enactment, at Lincoln there was no acting as the teams battled it out for the prestigious Kevin Gobrecht Memorial. It was fitting and appropriate therefore that Stevie Smith took his first 2013 PA Speedweek win when in victory lane he explained, “Obviously it’s seven grand, but that’s far from the purpose. It was the Kevin Grobrecht Memorial. I don’t think there’s a driver that can stand out here that had more of a relationship with him than me. We all grew up together…we beat on each other…and this is a great night to win.” “At one point in time, the Gobrechts and I were worried about football. We weren’t really
into racing,” said Smith, “I think we got tired of running up and down the field, so we all started looking at race cars. I actually sold Kevin his first go cart and that’s where he started. We dragged him to the races with us…. His death was a sad time, but I think it’s amazing the power he still has behind him from the fans here all these years later.” For the second straight Lincoln Speedweek show, Smith set fast time. But then he pulled the #8 pill for the inversion, putting himself on the outside of row four for the start beside Saturday night Speedweek winner Alan Krimes. Points leader Hafertepe, led the first three laps from outside the first row before thirdstarting Brent Marks rim-rode to the lead on lap four. From there, Marks pulled away to a 2.66-second lead by the time he hit lapped traffic on lap 11.
Marks, Hafertepe, and Smith ran first through third the next six laps, as a surging Krimes entered the picture when he caught Brian Montieth for fourth on lap 18. Things got interesting with six laps to go, as Smith finally caught Hafertepe for second, and Krimes caught Hafertepe for third a lap later.
Adam Wilt (left) took anoher heat win as did points leader Sam Hafertepe (below)
The race quickly became a three-car battle for the win with three laps to go. Smith grabbed the lead from Marks as the three leaders drove nearly side-by-side under the white flag. Smith was scored the leader of the lap, and held off both Marks and Krimes in another three-wide run under the chequered flag. Smith’s win was the 24th in his Lincoln career, and he became the 10th different winner in 19 races at Lincoln this year. Heats were won by Hafertepe, J J Grasso, Wilt, and Rahmer.
JJ Grasso (left) made a one-off appearance and won a heat and pole for the final
Aaron Ott (right) charged out of he B -Main into the feature
Aaron Ott won the B-Main. Fast time in time trials over the 39-car field was set by Smith with a one-lap time of 13.506-seconds (99.956 MPH). Aussie Molly was joined pit side by compatriot Tasmanian Dawkins who’d run a couple of Ohio Speedweek shows before heading further east. As expected Molly was the better performer again coming out of the B-Main into the feature. Dawkins was still finding his feet and failed to finish the B-Main while all the while gaining pace.

Williams Grove – night 7.
Extra money and extra prestige saw Dietrich get some redemption at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night in the Mitch Smith Memorial before a large and vocal crowd. He grabbed the lead from Kreitz on lap 18 and went on to score the Mitch Smith Memorial win and $10,000 in his third Grove win of 2013. “We were pretty good from the get-go,” said Dietrich. “Donnie was good too and had a lot of corner speed. It was making it hard to slide him in three and four. I saw Fred (Rahmer) stick his nose in there and I knew I had to get by Donnie before I got racing with Fred. This is one of the biggest local shows of the year and it feels good to put it on the frontstretch. I should have had one last week, but there was driver error on the last lap.” Kreitz started on the pole with Oklahoma invader Bacon and grabbed the early lead. Bacon would flip in the first turn with one lap completed bringing out the red flag. He was okay. Dietrich started third and was in second for the restart. He started to hound Kreitz for the lead, but couldn’t make the slide-job work in turns three and four. For a while, the top five drivers were all racing only a few car lengths apart. Dietrich was next to Kreitz in turn three on lap 16 but couldn’t clear the pass and fell back into second. The next time around, he tried it again and made the move work and was the new leader with 18 laps completed. Dietrich would go unchallenged over the final 12 laps for the win. After successfully meeting t he weight limit Dietrich re-fired the Gary Kauffman owned #48 where he drove to the Beer Hill Gang in turn 3 and stopped to salute them, much to their vocal delight.

Kreitz, Rahmer, Bacon and Layton won the 10-lap heat races. McIntyre Jr. won the consolation. Aussies Molly and Dawkins were again in action with the latter slightly nervous about running the fast track. Molly parlayed his night into another A-Main finish while Dawkins was there for the experience. All American Outlaws. For the second straight time Doty pushed the #6 to victory lane. Surprisingly, there was no big firewroks display on July 4 at Lincoln and instead it was held at the Grove and it turned out to be a very extensive showing held prior to the main event.

Despite this track being even faster than the Grove due to its more open and flowing nature - read flat to the boards, a host of locals added to the field to produce the biggest field so far. It was quasi local young gun Blane Heimbach who made a pass with just over a lap to go to score the feature event worth $5,000 after a thrilling dice with Doug Esh. Heimbach started second in the 30-lap feature race and took the lead over polesitter Doug Esh when the green flag waved.

The Port Royal venue offers a variety of racing lines with some drivers electing to run the high speed dance against the cushion or the equally as effective run around the pole line, or many other lines in between. While the highline is visually stunning for the fans it is also fraught with danger as the slightest slip up can result in destroyed cars, or worse, physical injury. Earlier in a heat race, Aaron Ott, son of engine building legend Don, destroyed his once pristine #25 after a series of bone jarring flips when he tagged the turn 1 fence after a miniscule mis
cue. Incredibly this was only the second rollover of the week and thankfully Ott was able to walk away. In the Main event, Dietrich also rattled the fence without flipping and a few, including the highly rated Bacon, also had some very near misses. On a lap 13 restart Esh pounced for control which he took before crossing the stripe as the new leader just before the red flag unfurled for a nasty first turn spill by Marks who became the latest victim of the turn 1 and 2 top-line. Marks’ was able to walk away although it was suggested by corner workers that he may have had a very short nap. When action resumed Smith bolted to the inside for second but Heimbach had the momentum of rolling the high side through the treacherous first and second turns and held onto the spot as the race went down the back chute. For a time it seemed as if Esh might streak to this third win of the season at the track but then as the race hit its final 10 laps, Heimbach dropped off of the high groove to begin circling the middle of the track and that’s when he began really biting into Esh’s amassed advantage. However, it took until just before the white flag for Heimbach to regain control after the leaders again encountered lapped traffic with seven laps to go. With Esh circling the high outside of the speedway, Heimbach put a drive on low into the third turn as they headed for the white flag that saw him drive up in front of Esh in the middle of the corners only to see Esh turn the car and try to rally back running low off of the fourth turn.
But it was not to be for Esh as instead Heimbach went back to back in the 410-sprint division at Port Royal, scoring his third win of the season at the track and second in a row. Schuchart had set fast time with a lap of 16.528 seconds but then spun in the main event before rallying back to a top 5 finish. Heats went to Mike Erdley, Hodnett, Rahmer and Heimbach. Nate Snyder scored the B Main. Unfortunately while Dawkins wasn’t competing Molly was but failed to make the main event. Series points leader Hafertepe just wasn’t fast from the moment they rolled the car out of the truck and found himself buried in the B-Main where a last lap move secured him the final transfer position. He then struggled and for the first time all week finished outside of the top ten with as yet unrealised disastrous consequences as Hodnett took the speedweek series point lead with one race to go as the series was set to conclude the following night. The top four in series points of Hodnett, Rahmer, Smith and Sam Hafertepe Jr. were separated by just 27 points in their quest for the title. Late Models & Enduros In the 20 lap Late Model main, Nick Dickson drove to just his second career win at the track aided in part by a multi car pile up, while Deron Henry took the enduro dash feature event.

Selinsgrove – night 9 (final). Jan Opperman Memorial
Hodnett V
Unfortunately a great finale of 410 Sprintcars and 358 Sportsman (Effectively 360 Sprintcars) was rained out due to a heavy thunderstorm hitting the venue just as teams were starting to amass for what was sure to be a fantastic finale. Sadly for Hafertepe he had no shot at regaining the points lead and becoming the first nonposse member to win in the events 23 year history. “Overall I’m really pleased with our performance,” said Hafertepe. “I don’t think many people thought an invader could contend for The PA Speedweek title and we proved them wrong. There were several nights where our lack of track time at these places forced us to make guesses in terms of setup but, in general, I think we handled those situations pretty well. I was very proud to lead the deal going into the final night but between our motor going sour at The Grove, our bleeder coming apart at Lincoln, the rear end going at Hagerstown and our Port Royal qualifica-
tion we just didn’t quite get it done. You need everything to go nearly perfect to win this deal and we just had to fight off too many issues. I feel like we were fast every night and I feel like we gave The Posse all they could handle and I’m immensely proud of that, it just sucks to lead most of the way and lose the title on the last night.” Instead Hodnett’s consistency handed him his fourth speedweek crown in what proved to be a very even series.
