varsity football New conference, new faces and new venues. This football season will be filled with change. To kick it off, the Pirates are in a new conference filled with schools that have usually had solid football teams. “We’ll be playing new teams in a new league and everyone is highly competitive,” head coach Steve Smith said. Next, there are many new faces to the Pirates team this year. One of the most impactful players will be freshman quarterback Kaleb Eleby. Eleby was named the starting quarterback for the season opener against Seckman and went 16-for23 with 208 yards passing. He also threw for three touchdowns. Other important players include free safety Chris Poindexter and linebacker Markail Williams. The new players will be mixed in with some veterans. The captains this year will be Jake Stroker, Judge Williams, Jayveon Harris, Marcus Thornton, Trevor Parhomski and Tyrone Eastern. “We have a strong senior group,” Judge Williams said. “We have been playing with each other for the past four years so we all have a strong bond with each other, especially on the offensive line.” Last, the Pirates will have the true high school football experience. All but one game will be played under the Friday night lights. In the past, most games were played under the Saturday afternoon sun, so it will be a big change for the Pirates team. This football season will challenge the Pattonville team, so we will all have to see how they handle the challenges.

This year’s new cross country District as already been coined as the “District of Death” because it includes top teams such as Lafayette and Eureka. Although the boys’ team may be in the hardest District in the Midwest, the team still has high hopes for the season. “In the new district this year, I believe we will do alright,” senior Jared Roberts said. “It will be much more difficult than last year.” The team will be led through a number of meets throughout the season by head coach Jeremiah Simmons and assistant coach William Wessels. A meet that is highlighted on Simmons’ calendar is the Forest Park Cross Country Festival on Sept. 13. “It is one of the largest meets in the Midwest,” Simmons said. Simmons also pointed out the Conference and District meets as other important dates on the schedule. Quite a few veterans will help keep this year’s team strong. These runners include senior Francisco Rosales, senior Trystan Alexander, junior Adam Goss and senior Jared Roberts. “I think our goal this season is to make it out of Districts and advance to Sectionals,” Alexander said. There are also a couple of new runners that should make a huge impact on the season. These runners include freshmen Micah Thompkins and Jack McFarling. “I plan to run hard and push myself all season long,” McFarling said. Although from the outside the season may look like it will be one long haul, the team should find success if the runners work together as a team and not only help themselves get better, but also help their teammates get better.

girls’ cross country 2014 Roster

The fact that Pattonville is moving to a new conference seems to be the biggest story with most sports this fall, and girls cross country is no exception. “The [Suburban Conference 12] includes strong competition,” girls’ head coach Katherine Zoll said. “Particularly from the perennially deep Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and Hazelwood West teams.” While the competition will be tough, the team is excited to race and achieve new personal records. “I think that we have a good chance of doing well as a team this year,” sophomore varsity runner Olivia Wedig said. This year’s team will be led by returners Wedig as well as assistant captain senior Alissa Keller. “As assistant captain, my job is to keep the girls moving forward and try their hardest,” Keller said. Other returners that will be competing for the remaining varsity spots include junior Lillian Gardner, senior Christina Collier, senior Breanna Kellogg, senior Michelle Cummings and sophomore Marisa Loewenstein. There are also a number of newcomers that could make big impacts including senior Maddy Cody, freshman Maryah Dominick, freshman Katie Hutchinson-DiBello, freshman Nadia Pulliam and freshman Chloe Neal. “The veterans and newcomers competing to make it to the varsity level will drive this team as a whole to faster times,” Zoll said. “Our team captain Michelle Cummings and assistant captain Alissa Keller will carry on the Pattonville girls’ cross country traditions of teamwork, sportsmanship and hard work.”

“We are looking forward to playing rivals from our old conference,” assistant coach Emily McDaniel said, “but we are also excited to challenge ourselves even more by playing different teams.” The girls tennis team is changing conferences this year, and the switch includes a number of tennis powerhouses. “We will try our best in the conference this season,” senior Jas Stephenson said, who is considered one of the more important returners this season. The team is led by head coach Jeff Grass, assistant coach McDaniel, as well as team captain senior Chrissy Gross. “I plan on leading the team by playing my best,” Gross said, “and keeping a positive attitude and setting a good example for the newer girls.” Junior Leann Graff, an important newcomer this season, will also help out the team. “This season I will try my best and get better and better throughout the season,” Graff said. The team will compete in a number of matches against new opponents. Some of these opponents include Timberland, Parkway North and Fort Zumwalt West. “We are playing many new teams this year,” sophomore Kali Meister said. “Some of the best ones will be against Kirkwood and any Parkway school.” This season will include many challenges due to the new teams and new locations, but the team can have plenty of success if they can push themselves all season long.

varsity field hockey 2014 Roster

For field hockey, three is a magic number. The sport is entering its third year at Pattonville and this season will be completely different than the past two. “Our program began in 2012, so it has only been around for two years,” head coach Jessica Dalton said. “[This year] we will be competing at varsity for the first time.” With moving into the new conference, the field hockey team will be playing against all varsity teams, including Parkway South, Notre Dame, University City, Barat Academy and Rosati-Kain. “We’ve been working really hard and this is our first time playing all varsity teams,” returning player junior Julie Halveland said. “I’m excited [for the new season] because it’s a new conference.” The team, after facing JV opponents and posting favorable overall records in the past, realizes it will be up against tougher competition this year. “I feel this season will be challenging because we are playing all varsity teams this year like Kirkwood,” returning player junior Tyra Clark said. “But, I feel we will be able to win some games.” Some of the juniors improved their playing skills by playing for AIM Field Hockey Club in the offseason. “I think it’s a good experience and my stick skills have inproved,” Halveland said. Dalton said she is looking for senior Katie Scoopmire and junior Tyelor Duncan to continue to score goals for team. She is also looking toward captains Halveland, Clark, Emily Prueitt and Rachel Schamber to step up and make a difference.

New conference fielded with talented athletes Opportunities for teams made available by facing schools with similar sports By Brady Bell

BBell@PattonvilleTODAY.com

Last year was the end of competing in the Suburban North Conference for Pattonville athletics. Beginning this season, the Pattonville sports teams will be joining Kirkwood, Parkway North, Ritenour, Rockwood Summit and Webster Groves in the Suburban Conference 12, South Division. Varsity boys’ basketball coach Kelly Thames said, “I’m looking forward to the new rivals and the new teams we will get to play in this new conference.” Pattonville will be seeing some new competition in the new conference. “In the Suburban North, there was two or three dominate teams in the conference,” Thames said. “This new conference is up for grabs every year. There are good teams throughout the

whole conference.” Webster Groves varsity boys’ basketball finished the season ninth in the area for large schools and Kirkwood was a bubble team on the Top 10 according to the Post-Dispatch website. One of the sports that will be affected the most will be baseball. Since 2000, the baseball program has been conference champions 10 times, including 2014. “I am looking forward to seeing how our players develop due to the fact that we will be seeing better competition on a regular basis,” Coach Rob Simpson said. “The Suburban North lacked depth in quality baseball teams, so we will learn that we will have to compete every time we show up to the ball field if we want the win.” There will be some new changes to Pattonville athletics as well.

Boys’ volleyball will now have a chance of becoming conference champs. In the Suburban North, most of the schools didn’t offer volleyball as a sport; the only other school that had a team was Ritenour. All of the schools in the new conference will have boys’ volleyball teams. Also in this new conference, according to Thames, varsity boys’ and varsity girls’ basketball will be playing on the same night and at the same venue. “I’m looking forward to both of our varsity teams playing on the same night,” Thames said. “Now the teams can cheer for each other.” He also said this set-up of scheduling will also make it more convenient for the fans. Tennis coach Shaun Patrick is excited about the change of conference. “This new conference is

far more difficult than the Suburban North,” Patrick said. “The competition is far greater. We will be playing a tough team every night we play.” It’s been 3 years since Pattonville added water polo, girls’ lacrosse and girls’ field hockey to the options of athletic teams which means the squads will now be able to compete at the varsity level. The teams will now be able to play teams in their own conference as no other team in the Suburban North had offered a water polo team. The water polo team will now have new venues to play at as well. This year will be a big year of changes for the sports teams at Pattonville High School. While the Pirates will lose the rivals of the Suburban North, they will gain new ones in the Suburban Conference 12, South Division.

JV and freshman will play first followed by the varsity match.

Returning varsity players Becky Cook, Sammie Byrne and Cassie Callahan have their work cut out for them this season. In previous years, the team has run an offense with only one setter, but due to the graduation of Maddi Maguire, all three of these girls will be playing the position. Also playing a strong role on the offense will be senior McKenzi Jacobson. By running this new offense, the team will have multiple options for what type of plays they would like to run. “I’m excited to be playing setter this season,” Callahan said. “I have played every other position on the court except setter, so this will be a new challenge for me.” The team is also challenged with more changes this season in their new conference: the Suburban 12 Conference, South Division. The team will be faced with opponents such as Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Rockwood Summit and Ritenour. Many on the team believe that they will advance in their conference, but they will need to put in a lot of hard work to get where they would like to be at the end of the season. “I think we will do good,” Cook said. “We will need to put in a lot of hard work and work together as a team more.”

The softball team is what some might call “stacked” with returning players and the experience will help the team face the new challenges of this upcoming season due to the shifts in conferences. “It’ll be a challenge, but I think we will do well if we put in a lot of hardwork and really work together as a team this season,” junior Lindsay Fink said. Along with the team’s returning players, there are also a few new faces on the team. Freshmen Peyton Pfeiffer and Katie Basta will be joining the team this season. Softball is also struggling to decide on captains for the season due to the amount of returning players that the team has. Some players the team is looking toward to lead the way are Kayla York, Kierstyn McCormick and Kayla Blank. The team is optimistic and prepared to have a good season, and excel in their new conference.

High school athletics is a revolving door meaning that not all good things can stay. Due to the graduation of standout player Jared Hunsaker, the Pattonville varsity boys soccer team is hoping to still compete in this new and more difficult conference. The soccer team will be led by co-captains Carter Yarnell and Micah Evans. “This conference has teams that have a lot of club players who have been playing together for awhile,” Yarnell said. 8/23-8/29 @Northwest Tourney Both captains expressed they want to see improvement from last year’s 9/3 @Marquette 6 pm overall record. 9/4 Duchesne 6:15 pm “I want the team to finish more than .500,” Yarnell said. 9/6 @Whitfield 12 pm Evans added that the team won around five games last year, and in order 9/10 @Kirkwood 4:15 pm 9/13 Hazelwood West 1 pm to improve, the team needs to make the necessary improvements in prac9/15 Timberland 7 pm tice. 9/17 Webster Groves 4:15 pm “Practice is going alright,” Yarnell said. “We’re getting a lot of work in 9/18 Parkway West 4:15pm and getting ready for the rest of the season.” 9/22-9/26 @CYC Tourney Evans doesn’t think the team has reached its potential yet. 9/30 Westminester 4 pm 10/3 Lindbergh 4 pm “We wanted a big improvement from last year, and so far it’s not go10/6 @Rockwood Summit 6 pm ing that way,” Evans said. “We are still working on possessing the ball and 10/8 Parkway North 4:15 pm fielding positions.” 10/10 @McCluer North 4 pm Also hoping to add to the improvement to the team is newcomer goalie 10/13 @Parkway South 6 pm 10/15 @Ritenour 4:15 pm Blake Stricker. This is Stricker’s 10th year playing soccer, but it’s his first 10/21 Lafayette 4:15 pm year on the Pattonville squad. The golf team had a help wanted sign hanging in the front window over the offseason. They needed a new student leader because of the graduation of state qualifier Nikki Callahan and they needed a new coach because of the retirement of Ms. Leslie Anderson. The varsity golf team will be led by captains Hannah Saputo and Jessica Burgess and new head coach, Mr. Bill Lingua. Burgess described her role as captain as “a way to get the team going since we’re spread across the course during matches and keeping the team positive.” There are just two freshman on the team this year. “We’re seasoning them now,” Saputo said. “And in the next few years, they are going to be great.” Like all Pattonville teams, golf will be competing in the new athletic conference. “It’s definitely going to be harder because these players have grown up playing golf,” Saputo said. “But that doesn’t mean we’re going to be any less great.” She said teams like Kirkwood and Webster Groves have athletes with more experience than the schools Pattonville played against in the past. Burgess thinks this conference will be both interesting and difficult. “I’m hoping that all of our teammates can just put aside the fact that this is a new conference and play with everything we have and not get overwhelmed with the new people,” Burgess said. Saputo echoes those thoughts about competing on the course this season. “I hope to bring the team together this year and go out and try competiing in this new conference,” Saputo said. “It’s going to be difficult, but we will play our best and hope for the big ‘W’ every time.”

Senior night will be short this year for the varsity swim team with only one senior on the roster for the second straight year. Evan Collins, who primarily swims long distance races, is the lone senior on the team. “It’s a different experience because about 2 years ago, I was the young one on the team with a lot of older people.” Sophomore Nathan McClain sees the youth as a disadvantage right now, but only because they are going against stronger swimmers in a new conference. “But next year and the year after, we will be really, really strong,” McClain said. “We have to rebuild the program right now and sometimes that means we have younger swimmers.” Although the majority of the team only has one or two years of high school swimming under their belts, it does not mean the athletes don’t have competitive experience. “These guys have been swimming a long time,” McClain said. “They have been coached at Bridgeton by Coach Anna LeBlanc and so the experience is there and we know what we are doing, we are just young.” The youngest swimmer on the team is standout freshman Aaron Garner who is currently just 20 seconds off the school record for the 500-yard swim. “I plan to put up a fight against the tougher schools in the new conference and win most of the meets,” Garner said. Putting in work during the offseason has already been rewarded to divers Cole Mansell and Colin Parker. In the first meet of the year, both juniors received scores that qualified them for the state diving competition in November. “It took a lot of hard work and dedication to make state,” Mansell said.
