Coach discovers team’s strengths, weaknesses By Nadia Maddex The first game of the season is when a coach is actually able to see a group work as a team and showcase all of the talent that the players have to offer. After the first tournament of the season, varsity boys’ basketball coach Kelly Thames is able to evaluate the 2016-2017 season. “I am really excited about this team,” Thames said. “The chemistry between the boys is great and we have some talented student-athletes. From top to bottom, this might be the most talented team I have had so far.” The team placed 3rd in the Pattonville Invitational Tournament and are now 2-1 on the season. That being said, Thames noticed a few strengths and weaknesses in the team’s play. “I have noticed the areas we did well in were playing with energy and emotion throughout the game, playing together as a team and communicating with each other on the offensive and defensive end,” Thames said. “The areas we need to work on are rebounding and free throw shooting.” Since Thames has learned of these strengths and weaknesses during the first few games, he said that he would be making a few modifications to practice to help the boys in future games. “We are going to be implementing more shooting drills in our practices.” The boys and coach Thames are hoping for an amazing season and can’t wait to give their all at all the rest of the games this season and showcase each individual talent they have to offer. “I am looking forward to seeing the Pirate Nation cheering the boys on at all of the home and away games!”

New players are stepping up their game to lead the team By Sarah Ponder After losing six seniors last year, the Pattonville girls’ varsity basketball team was not only struggling to find new players, but finding new leadership. Seniors Moryah Eldridge and captain Jalin Spears are stepping up their game to become leaders to the underclassmen. “It’s hard to show leadership, especially when I’ve never been given a role like this before,” Spears said. “I’m going to have to work hard to stay positive. Not only for myself, but for my team.” Eldridge may not be a captain, but she still knows that she needs to show leadership throughout the season especially to help the underclassmen. “I think it will help mostly during the games,” Eldridge said. “I think it’s good to encourage them while playing. I think it makes a difference when Jalin and I encourage them in both practices and in games because we want to show them that being on varsity is fun and that they should come back and play in the upcoming years. It’s good to have been able to bond with the girls and give them a good experience.” Both seniors have been on varsity for two years now and they are mainly trying to help the underclassmen, especially the sophomores, adapt to the intensity of the varsity level. “Our experience can show them how basketball isn’t just about the game,” Eldridge said. “It’s about the relationships you have with the rest of the team. Even though Jalin and I are the oldest, the goal is to be a good role model for them and show them that they can do basketball all four years of high school and still have a lot of fun.” The girls basketball team is currently 1-0. They are set to play in the Fort Zumwalt North Varsity Tournament starting Dec. 12.

Morlen wrestles with style By Katie Basta and Calvin Smith III Athletes have a swagger to their game. Wrestlers, like senior Matthew Morlen, also have a swagger to their look. Morlen walked the halls of Pattonville High School with a blonde mohawk and a brown mustache at the beginning of the season. He continued the tradition of modeling the undefeated blonde mohawk in hopes that he won’t have to cut it off this season. He lost a match at the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3, but the season is young and he has another goal in mind. Morlen comes into the season with a slight chip on his shoulder since he was unable to wrestle last year after suffering a torn meniscus during the soccer season. “I’m coming off of the knee surgery and ready to put in the work,” Morlen said. “I’m ready to wrestle.” One thing Morlen said that he won’t enjoy about wrestling is getting back into shape and having to drop weight. “I’ve got to get rid of some of this fat though,” Morlen said. “But I’m looking forward to it.” Morlen has been on the varsity team since his freshman year, giving him more experience than many of his contenders, and he’s looking forward to taking advantage of that. He said he has high hopes coming into the season, wishing to achieve nothing less than going to state finals. “That’s my goal,” Morlen said. “I want to be able to get there.”

girls’ swimming and diving

Lashley makes a splash by doing diving, cheerleading By Emily Tobar and Abby Stowers Pattonville girls’ swimming and diving is back for the 2016-2017 school year and is diving into the season with a positive outlook. With Coach Anna Braswell out on maternity leave, Pattonville Heights history teacher Ms. Madeline Marren has taken over the team. The team has 35 girls including nine freshman. Lidia Ramon is a freshman at Pattonville and joined the swimming team this year. “The team is great and I’m excited for the rest of the season,” newcomer Ramon said. Even with the team being as large as it is, the members still get together with their teammates and hold team bonding sessions. “My favorite part is the team bondings and the meets,” junior Kacie Baniak said. Baniak has been swimming since she was 6 years old because of her mom. “My mom made me start swimming in case I ever got lost at sea so I wouldn’t die,” Baniak said. Junior Megan Lashley has been diving since she was 7 years old when she saw her older sister diving in the Bridgeton Summer League Dive Team and decided she wanted to join. “The hardest part was learning how to dive into the water head first,” Lashley said. “In gymnastics and cheerleading, you always land on the feet, so the thought of ‘landing’ head first scared me.” With a busy schedule, Lashley will be doing both cheerleading and swimming at the same time during this winter season. She also participates in soccer along with cheerleading in the spring season. She also works year-round. “It’s really hard balancing everything,” she said. “The worst part is when schedules overlap and I have to choose an activity to be at.” The girls’ next meet is on Dec. 9 at McCluer North High School.
