ALTO ADIGE
THE WOOD, THE FAMILY The three secrets of the pircher company.
Pircher's history began in Dobbiaco, in the heart of the Alto Adige region. Here the people have always had a particularly close bond with wood as a source of life and work. Knowledge of this unique raw material and the respectful treatment of nature are part of the South Tyrolean culture. By handing down the art from father to son, Pircher has been able to combine tradition and technology, and woodworking and environment protection so that today Pircher can count on 80 years of experience in the wood industry.

With the launch of the brand BIOLINE Wood. Emotion. the company was able to bring craftsmanship experience and modern technology to the garden. BIOLINE stands for organic production, quality, sustainability and respect for nature: characteristics that allow us to be partners of the PEFC body.
...love for wood since 1928
INNOVATION AND CONTINUOUS MONITORING We know wood down to the last grain. Our expertise is the product resulting from a combination of craftsmanship and continuous research and development. From the impregnation process to the finished product, everything is done by specialised personnel and modern machinery, and all items are subject to strict and constant controls.
quality certifications Production technologies, process management, quality of the work environment, protection of the ecosystem: everything is subject to strict and constant controls. Our business goals and the quality of our products are confirmed by the confidence of our customers and employees and are recognised by important international certifications. • ISO 9001 - Certificate for the efficiency of the organisational structure. • ISO 14001 - Certificate for environmental protection • OHSAS 18001 - Certification that ensures an occupational health and safety management system.
• EC - Certification for compliance with European regulations on wooden structural elements. • PEFC - Certification that attests that the wood comes from forests that are sustainably managed.

THE WOOD South Tyrol's forests have always played a protective role and are of fundamental importance for the population and as a habitat for animals and plants. This is why their responsible management is important to us.
{

sustainable management of the forests The sustainability of wooden products depends on the management of forests. In order to say a wooden product is truly eco-friendly, the raw material must come from forests with sustainable management. PEFC certification guarantees the origin of wood from forests with sustainable management. In this way the forests are maintained and improved so that a balance between demand for production processes and social and ecological aspects is created. The owners of the South Tyrol forests have always sustainably managed their forests in collaboration with the forest rangers. PEFC is the largest forest certification organisation in the world. There are currently over 225 million hectares of certified forest globally. (Source: Nachhaltige Waldbewirtschaftung, Alles was du wissen mĂśchtest..., PEFC Gruppe SĂźdtiroler Bauernbund - Bozen)
origin of the high altitude larch biolineÂŽ All requirements for wood for our Bioline products comes from the South Tyrol forests. The roundwood is processed in a sawmill in Laces in Venosta Valley to then be transformed into the Bioline products at the Dobbiaco plant in Pusteria Valley. Only in this way are we able to pass on to our customers all the beauty and naturalness of the South Tyrol forests with our products. 7
ALPINE LARCH OF SOUTH TYROL High altitude larch and South Tyrol have had a strong bond for centuries and it is a building material just as essential today as in the past.
Larch wood
is perfect
for outdoor use due to its longevity and weather-resistance. It is used mostly for façade cladding, flooring and outdoor furniture. Larch plays a key role in the forest ecosystem and is the only deciduous forest species of the Alps.
Why use the wood from our forests? • • • •
sustainably managed forests are stable. more timber than what will regrow is not cut. even when cut the wood retains the CO2 absorbed. new trees fill the free space, accumulate carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen (O2).
South Tyrol's forest accumulates 100,000,000 T CO2 / year. If a forest were not managed, the trees would remain unused and would rot. In this way the accumulated CO2 would be released again.
8
Wood, champion in construction Wood is one of the oldest building materials in history, even beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Still today wood is an essential building material. Especially owing to its brilliant features, which are: • • • • • •
resistant excellent insulation values sound and sustainable easy to process flexible in its use tactile allure
If these brilliant characteristics of the material are combined with craftsmanship and know-how, safe, stable and durable products are created. Wood offers several options both for modern and traditional design. (Source: Die Zukunft wächst auf den Bäumen, Tis Innovation Park - Cluster Holz, Bozen)

WOOD SPECIES Wood is nature. We want to give you more details on wood so you can learn more about our outstanding raw material and enjoy the splendour of our products to the utmost.
The product comes from trees that have been exposed to the weather for decades. The tree had to protect itself and natural features such as knobs have shaped it and defined its character. The selected product will have some of these characteristics. They will tell you something about the origin of the raw material.
Maintenance
The passage of time gives untreated products a velvety patina marked by a silver gracefulness. To stop this natural process, you can quickly apply our whitener before applying a new coat of Bioline oil.
cracking
Accumulated moisture is a natural characteristic of wood, without which it could not exist. The formation of cracks during the driest periods, though rare, is a natural phenomenon and doe not indicate poor quality or deterioration.
knobs
Many woods have a special formation of knobs that is very characteristic. Fixed knobs are not a defect. Often the branches have a rotating fibre pattern which can lead to small rough areas or fringes, especially after planing. They can be removed with sandpaper.
Resin
Remember that the rare leakage of resin is due to the vitality of the wood. We recommend that you remove it with a specific product or let it dry before gently removing it. Note: For coloured items, the dried white resin stands out more.

Chestnut oak wood Chestnut oak wood is very heavy and hard, but at the same time very flexible and versatile to use. France is the leader in the art of working chestnut oak and is well-known for the production of "Barrique" chestnut oak barrels of high quality. The timber for our planks also comes from this source. Small cracks and colour differences are typical of this type of wood and make it seem alive. Chestnut oak must not be brought into contact with cement dust since it might cause reactions in the wood.

ASSEMBLY AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
Material characteristics: Things to know Wood is a natural material susceptible to dimensional, surface (cracks) and colour variations. These are precisely the differences that make it a unique material with characteristics that provide a special and timeless allure. Therefore, it is right to be familiar with some of its peculiarities, both at the time of selection and when laying: Tolerances and dimensional stability: Unlike other materials, wooden products have significant dimensional tolerances, especially in the exotic species: +/-1-2 mm in thickness and width, +/-3-4 mm in length. These tolerances are inevitable and are therefore to be accepted. In addition, wood - especially if placed outside - undergoes dimensional changes (even higher than +/- 8% in width) that have to be evaluated at the time of design and laying. These variations are due to changes in ambient humidity, the absorption and release of humidity typical of the wood, as well as the characteristics of the individual wood species. Therefore, it is essential that the flooring be laid in a workmanlike manner, in order to accommodate the natural movements of the wood.
22
crack due to drying at the top
resin pocket
Cracking: Precisely because of its hygroscopic properties, when wood is very dry it creates drying cracks, which tend to disappear in a humid climate but that reappear once again when the climate turns dry.
Maintenance: to maintain the original colour, adequate maintenance should be performed at least 1-2 times a year (washing, sanding, oiling or painting see page 86). Leakage of natural material due to
Laying: The type of fastening and distance to be kept between the planks should be evaluated case by case by the layer, who will have determined the type of work to be done and have assessed the relative humidity of the wood. Colour: Practically all wood species initially have shades of colour very different from one plank to the next, often even on the same board. These colour differences blend together when the wood remains exposed to atmospheric agents, oxidizing and becoming grey, for several months.
washout: Almost all hardwoods release natural materials when wet (generally tannin). Over time, this "bleeding" reduces, almost to the point of disappearing. These natural materials, however, can stain the surfaces with which they come into contact. This should be taken into account when laying in order to avoid damaging the beauty of the surfaces. Leakage of resin: Softwoods contain resin that, with heat, thins and leaks out of the wood. Once dried, Pine and Larch can have increases in fibre and detachments of knobs. This is why use of Pine and Larch for flooring are recommended against in places where you walk barefoot.
FLOORS
TERRASSOCLIP ensures architectural protection thanks to air circulation between sublath and plank.
The EPDM REFIX spacer can also be used as an alternative.
Rubber granulate to ensure water drainage.
General information on laying outdoor flooring: It is important to follow some simple though fundamental precautions for proper installation. In any case it is recommended that the design and construction of the substructure be performed in a workmanlike manner by qualified personnel. Storage and stabilisation: The material should be kept where it will be installed for a certain period (at least one or two weeks). In fact, the wood needs on-site stabilisation before being positioned and assembled. Therefore, both the non-slip boards and the substructure laths (joists) are to be stabilised on site before installation by storing them in a dry and ventilated area, away from the atmospheric agents and still packed (tied). Warning: as soon as they are unpacked, the non-slip boards or pre-finished panels are to be installed immediately. If the material remains unpacked and untied under the sun, wind and rain, it will definitely have movements that can longer be corrected!
Water discharge: Always prepare a slight tilt to the flooring and lay the substructure so that the water can easily flow out from below. Therefore, make sure that the water discharge is not hampered by the substructure or other materials. In these cases the use of rubber granulate spacers or feet is recommended. Drainage: Substructure and floor must be laid on a material that allows water to drain. Airing: An "air" distance should be provided between all flooring elements (boards, substructure and foundation). Between the plank and plank, in breadth, the distance ranges between 4 and 8 mm, depending on the width of the boards and the humidity of the materials at the time of laying. The greater the width of the board, the greater in absolute value will be the possible deviation of the materials due to the changes in humidity. The higher the humidity of the wood during laying, the lower the distance between the single boards must be. A suitable distance between two boards must be kept also lengthwise (2-3 mm). Sublathing: Use aluminium or another material that has a durability class equal to or superior to that used
on the decking as a lath of the wooden substructure. Sublathing must be sized to the size of the surface and to the wood species used, as well as to its thickness. The recommended distance between the laths of the substructure varies between 30 and 40 cm, depending on the materials used and the intended use Fastening: We must plan on a secure fastening of both the sublath to the underlying surface and the nonslip boards to the sublath. The fastening recommended for flooring offered by the Pircher Oberland spa company is always a double screw from the top, secured on each sublath (therefore every 25-30 cm). If you do not wish to see the screws, it is advisable to build some small platforms and fasten the non-slip boards from the bottom upwards, and then secure the platforms to the underlying surface. In this way the amount of visible screws will be very low. The fastening screws should always be suitable for outdoor use (steel A4 or higher quality). Almost all woods require pre-drilling. Fastening with clips or other systems: The Pircher Oberland spa company declines all liability for problems that may arise if the layer uses specific fastening clips not listed in this catalogue. Therefore, the responsibility will be of the layer. Wood cracking: To minimise the formation of cracks to the utmost, it is advisable to seal the tops of the boards (in particular for hardwoods) with the special product. 23

The colourless oil makes the larch even more special. But the unique grain of this wood is enhanced even when coloured. Our surface treatment products are effective but at the same time fully respectful of nature, the environment and the wood itself. One piece of advice: the resin content in the larch varies according to the growth area, and the wood may secrete a certain amount of it even after being worked. In the case of coloured products, the dry resin (white) is particularly evident. In this case, simply remove it with a cleaning product.

elevated garden bed
The growth of plant in an elevated garden bed is supported by the different layers and by the development of heat inside the garden.
Soil
Gardening waste, chipboard, leaves
Honeycomb membrane along the entire perimeter
Green turf turned with the roots pointing upwards Twigs and small pruning Galvanised wire net with hexagonal mesh
Things to know Here are a few hints for completing your elevated garden bed. First, level the ground where you plan to place the garden. Then it is necessary to create drainage along the entire perimeter of the wooden walls with very fine gravel (about 20 cm wide and 10 cm deep) so that the water can drain. As an alternative, it can be placed on top of bricks. Lay the galvanised wire net with hexagonal 68
mesh on the bottom to protect against rodents. Now start to fill the elevated garden bed with the various layers of about 25-40 cm. The first layer consists of twigs and small pruning. This layer guarantees ventilation from below the gardening waste and in this way ensures regular disintegration. To prevent the finer material placed on top from being able to filter into the layer below, it is advisable to lay a layer of green turf turned
with the roots pointing upwards. The second layer consists of gardening waste, chipboard and leaves. The last layer is then made up of soil. An excellent base for planting all types of vegetables, salad, herbs and even flowers.

PERGOLA
A pergola that adapts to every requirement, but at the same time is easy to design and assemble with three base elements. The first step is choosing the number of posts based on the measurement and reach required. Then the size and length of the beams and purlins are chosen. It is possible to select from two different top profiles. The purlins already have the profile on both sides, while the beams have it on one side only. Now all you have to do is complete the structure with the hardware best suited to your needs.

Wood is a fundamental value and the foundation of Pircher's work. This is why the best wood coming from controlled forests (PEFC) of the South Tyrol is selected and carefully worked to become a select raw material that combines natural quality with working technology.
SEMI-FINISHED PRODUCTS
Production Everything starts with production and the first step is the in-depth knowledge of the wood which is followed by the automated working. Larch wood is dried in thermodynamic rooms with automatic climate control (530 m3 capacity) until humidity ranging between 8% and 15% - optimum for glueing - is reached. Technologically innovative machines and the experience and expertise of the personnel are the key ingredients for guaranteeing superior quality and precision in every step of the working. After drying, the defects of the wood, such as the knobs, irregularities and resin pockets, are identified and eliminated using the Wood-eye scanner technology. The machine is fitted with cameras that identify the points requiring attention and it is connected to an automatic saw that removes the defect with utmost precision. Only selected boards are then used in the next step of glueing and pressing that shapes the BIOLINE® laminated beams. The beams remain in pressing for several hours, depending on the size of the material, the temperature and the shape of the beam. The best technology, Weinig, is used for planing to ensure top quality and precision throughout the production stage. In this way the quality of the final product becomes a certainty.

GREEN DREAM
a vision by Pircher
We want to convey the culture of wood and a love for its natural characteristics to all our partners and customers. This also means respecting and caring for the environment. As well as ethic and social responsibility. Our commitment in this direction has always been diligent and widespread, and we have called our corporate social responsibility project Green Dream.
www.greendream.org
Pircher purchases ecologically responsible paper to print this catalogue. Human beings around the world consume about one million tonnes of paper every day, and this figure is rising. This is why we are committed to purchasing ecologically responsible paper, in order to reduce our environmental impact and possible negative effects on humans and nature. The Pircher company, together with Arjowiggins Graphic, leader in the production of top quality eco-friendly paper, have chosen a reliable partner that supports our project. Using recycled paper helps preserve the earth's natural resources. Therefore, with RePrint Offset (inside pages) and RePrint Matt (cover) Pircher has selected paper that contains at least 60% recycled paper coming from responsibly managed sources for this catalogue. Recycled paper has only a limited impact on the environment. It consumes fewer natural resources, production uses less water and energy, and the production cycle takes place within a narrow time frame, such as, for example, the transport routes and lower CO族 emissions. Recycling also cuts the amount of waste by creating a recycled paper market.
By using RePrint Matt and RePrint Offset paper compared to a non-recycled paper, the environmental impact will be reduced by:
kg of waste
kg CO2
km travelled the average a European vehicle
litres of water
kWh of energy
kg of wood
on by
Source: The company Labelia Conseil performs the carbon imprint analysis according to the Bilan Carbone速 method. The calculations are the result of a comparison between recycled paper and a virgin fibre-based paper, and the the latest European BREF figures available (for virgin fibre paper). The results obtained are based on technical information and are subject to changes. www.arjowigginsgraphic.com
FSC速 LOGO FSC
This catalogue is printed with the FSC mark on 100% Forest Stewardshio Council速 Mix certified paper. This means that the entire production chain of teh catalogue guarantees that the wood used in production comes from FSC certified forests.
