Che Guevara (Ernesto Guevara) was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1928. He was the eldest of five children and came from a middle class background. Although he excelled in many sports, particularly athletics, he suffered from serious bouts of asthma throughout his life. In 1948 he studied medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. A few years into his studies he took a year off to embark on a motorcycle journey which took him through Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and Florida. In 1953 he received his medical degree giving him the official title ‘Dr. Ernesto Guevara’.

Che later remarked that the injustices that he witnessed on his trip through Latin America instilled a need in him to ‘Help these people’. It was this desire in him that would see him leave the world of medicine and consider the political arena of armed struggle. In 1954, while travelling through Guatemala, Guevara would witness the government led by president Jacobo Arbenz being overthrown by a military coup backed by the Americans.
Incensed and disgusted by this coup, Guevara decided to join Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary. Che Guevara, Fidel Castro along with dozens of men and women arrived in Cuba in 1956 with the intention of overthrowing the government of General Fulgencio Batista.

The following months saw Castro’s Guerrilla army seize control of territory which they shared among farmers in the region. In return, some of the general public joined Castro’s army. Many people were killed and tortured if they didn’t give up information on Castro and his men. This led to more and more support from the general public for the revolutionaries.
Fidel Castro
Although the United States helped Batista in his efforts to conquer Castro and Guevara, it would prove in vain. They had too much support on their side and a victory was in sight.

Castro became Cuba’s new leader on January 9th, 1959. After the Cuban revolution was over, Che wanted to lead other revolutions in other countries. He chose Bolivia as his next mission. Unfortunately, the locals in Bolivia didn’t trust him as the Cubans did so he had little or no support.
In 1967, Che Guevara was captured by Bolivian soldiers in the town of ‘La Higuera’. On October the 9th, the president of Bolivia ordered the execution of Guevara. He is buried in Cuba.
