WELCOME Hi all, With a change in government, many businesses around Australia are reporting an increased confidence in the market and certainly our data would indicate that is the case, so let’s hope for all of us that continues. It has been another solid period for PIRTEK and we’ve been spreading our reach in the sporting arena even further. The main focus has been around the PIRTEK Enduro Cup for V8 Supercars, along with taking on the naming rights to Parramatta Stadium - now PIRTEK Stadium and an association with A-League team the Western Sydney Wanderers. All of this has been a huge investment for our brand amid some of Australia’s most exciting spectator and television sports. Congratulations to Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff who took out the PIRTEK Enduro Cup for V8 Supercars. They entered the Gold Coast 600 behind on the points ladder but chipped at it and came away with the win. Over the past few months of team sporting finals in most parts of Australia, it has been fantastic to see the amount of reports from PIRTEK supported community teams. The franchise base being able to put their weight behind sports as diverse as Rugby League, Netball, Soccer and other grassroots activities such as drag racing is pleasing. Of course, it is with sadness that we ended our association with the PIRTEK Parramatta Eels as naming rights partner at the end of the National Rugby League season. It has been a fantastic association that has delivered solid coverage for us nationally. We wish the Eels well into the future after what has been a very tough 2013 campaign. This issue of FLUID brings to an end another fantastic year for PIRTEK, a year of serious change within our business. Over the next 12 months we hope you will see the benefit of the hard work that we’ve been undertaking this year. We are continuing to expand our footprint and our brand around the world and anything we can help you on a local level to expand your brand, by all means contact our team. All of us hope that you enjoy your Christmas and New Year period with your family and friends and that it is a happy and safe one if you are taking time away from business. Until next time,
Stephen Dutton Chief Executive Officer Pirtek Fluid Systems Pty Ltd

PIRTEK KIWIS MAKE WORLD CUP FINAL NEW CENTRE IN DALBY The PIRTEK Network has grown to 95 Service and Supply locations right around Australia with the addition of a new centre in Queensland in Dalby. On the Darling Downs 210 kilometres west of Brisbane, Dalby has a strong mining community and is home to the growing Coal Seam Gas industry.
The PIRTEK-backed New Zealand Kiwis Rugby League squad made it to the Rugby League World Cup Title Grand Final in Manchester when they took on arch enemy the Australian Kangaroos. The black and white team went into the match as defending Champions with a determined Australian squad keen to wrest back the Title. Drawn in Group B, the Kiwis had a relatively easy path to the quarter-finals. They overcame challenges from Samoa (42-24), a disappointing France (48-0) and Papua New Guinea (56-10) to book a quarter final match against Scotland. They won this match easily as well - walking away with a 40-4 win.
The franchise is ideally located on the Warrego Highway and is being operated by franchisee, John McCormack. PIRTEK has also undergone a change of franchisee in Sydney at its Mascot outlet. The Kent Road outlet is now being operated by Craig Duncan. In Victoria, Jake Bunce has recently taken on the Springvale PIRTEK franchise at 902 Princes Highway, Springvale.
The Kiwis were shattered after a valiant effort in the World Cup Final

Australia’s defeat of England in the first game of the competition set up a semi-final battle between the host nation and the Kiwis. The strong Brits gave the PIRTEK New Zealand team its toughest run, the Kiwis scraping by with a 20-18 win. By contrast, the Aussies - who not only had England, but Fiji and Ireland in their side of the draw - had a comparatively easy semi-final, beating Fiji 64-0.
In the final, the Kiwis put up a valiant effort but came up short against a rampant Kangaroos team. The Kangaroos hadn’t seen another team cross their tryline since the first match of the event against England and sadly for the PIRTEK Kiwis that continued in the Manchester final. LOWNDES AND LUFF WIN PIRTEK ENDURO CUP The people’s hero, Craig Lowndes and co-driver Warren Luff took victory in the inaugural PIRTEK Enduro Cup after a thrilling fight that went down to the final race on the Gold Coast. Sitting across the three endurance races in V8 Supercars - the Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast 600, 2013 was the first time that the three had been combined into its own Championship-within-aChampionship. The Cup itself was created by Australian automotive sculptor, James Corbett. Corbett is using parts from PIRTEK that are used to keeping the world connected. He has taken them and created a masterpiece that shows the pieces in a light never seen before. Coming into the last event of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup, five combinations
were mathematically in with a chance of taking the crown. The pair of Red Bull Racing Australia Commodores, the Bathurst winning Pepsi Max Crew factory Ford Performance Racing Falcons and the surprise packet - Lee Holdsworth and Craig Baird in Erebus Motorsport’s IRWIN Tools Mercedes were all in with a shot. Lowndes and Luff’s Red Bull Racing Australia team-mates, Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell were leading the way after a win in Sandown and second at Bathurst, however a Saturday win on the streets of Surfers Paradise and a DNF from Whincup blew the Cup chase wide open. The #888 duo were able to do enough on Sunday to be awarded the inaugural trophy, which was presented by PIRTEK CEO, Stephen Dutton.
high shot on Elijah Taylor. Sadly, this was the only points that New Zealand would score, the Kangaroos running away with a 34-2 victory in what was a masterful recovery of the World Cup crown from New Zealand. Watch the highlights of the final here: http://youtu.be/6GwJuRvKty8
Casey Stoner will step away from V8 Supercars after one season.
STONER STEPS AWAY After a single year of competition in the V8 Supercars Dunlop Development Series, Casey Stoner will walk away from motorsport. The 27-year-old two times MotoGP World Champion entered the second tier V8 Supercar series this year with backing from PIRTEK and Red Bull in the Triple 8 Race Engineering team. The season has been tumultuous to say the least for Stoner, who has shown strong pace in one of the most competitive Development Series seasons in its 13 year history. Throughout the year, Stoner has also returned to Honda to test a MotoGP bike in Japan, but thoughts of returning to the premier motorcycle category have also been squashed by the former Champion.
Warren Luff and Craig Lowndes were awarded the PIRTEK Enduro Cup from PIRTEK CEO, Stephen Dutton on the Gold Coast

WANDER GOALS RAISING MONEY FOR ST VINCENTS To extend its relationship with St Vincents Hospital in Sydney, PIRTEK has joined forces with the Western Sydney Wanderers to donate $1,000 for every goal the Hyundai A-League Club scores in season 2013/2014. The funds will go towards research at the hospital, which is considered to be a world leading operation, this continues a long standing relationship that PIRTEK has held with the institution. In 2011, Peter Duncan the Founder and Executive Chairman of PIRTEK, and a former patient of St Vincent’s, funded the establishment of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit at St Vincent’s. Today the unit is making significant inroads in developing treatments for chronic neurological and neurodegenerative
disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, HIV-associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson Disease and Stroke. “For us, the PIRTEK Wander Goals initiative on the part of Pirtek is particularly inspiring in light of the fact that it is completely community based,” said Professor Bruce Brew, head of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit. “PIRTEK has made a huge difference to our research endeavours at St Vincent’s and as a result of their foresight we have been able to make a meaningful difference to those with neurodegenerative disorders. “We are receiving support from a company that already has form in making a difference in combatting

major diseases and is now partnering with one of the great sporting success stories in recent Australian history, the Western Sydney Wanderers.” At the time of writing, over $10,000 had been donated as a result of the PIRTEK Wander Goals program.
LET’S GO BRONCOS Following on from its successful partnership with the Parramatta Eels for nine years, PIRTEK has moved its sponsorship north of the border to join the Brisbane Broncos. PIRTEK has 29 centres in Queensland and the partnership with the Sunshine State’s leading club shows a diversion in PIRTEK’s sponsorship, but also keep it at the forefront of the National Rugby League’s Telstra Premiership. “Rugby League has been a great vehicle to build recognition of PIRTEK in New South Wales, so now we see this sport as an opportunity to continue building that strength in Queensland,” said PIRTEK CEO, Stephen Dutton. “The Broncos are such an iconic club and share the same philosophies and ideals of quality, success and service as the PIRTEK business. “We are proud to officially link with the Broncos’ brand, and look forward to working together to build our business and community ideals.”

PIRTEK will be featured on the rear of the away jerseys that have been released by Nike well ahead of the 2014 Telstra Premiership. “It’s another great sign for this club that we’ve been able to sign a Premier Sponsorship with a company of PIRTEK’s calibre,” said Broncos CEO, Paul White. “PIRTEK’s brand is synonymous with League, and now it’ll become closely associated with us, as they strengthen their market share across Queensland which is Broncos territory.
“We’re also rapt to unveil our new, modern-looking away jersey by Nike featuring the PIRTEK logo.” White went on to praise PIRTEK’s operation after a visit to the company’s Western Sydney HQ: “Having visited PIRTEK’s Head Office, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the scale and quality of their operations and the values displayed by company management.”
PIRTEK TAKES ON PARRAMATTA STADIUM Heading into the 2013/2014 Hyundai A-League season, PIRTEK announced it has become the naming rights partner to Parramatta Stadium, from here on known as PIRTEK Stadium. The deal, announced by Member for Parramatta Geoff Lee with New South Wales Minister for Sport and Recreation, Gabrielle Upton is a landmark for the Stadium that began operations in 1986. Never before has the naming rights of Parramatta Stadium been on-sold to an organisation. The arrangement between PIRTEK and Venues NSW will last for five years and the PIRTEK brand will be prominent throughout Western Sydney Wanderers A-League fixtures, Parramatta Eels NRL home games and the other major events that will be held at the Stadium. “PIRTEK and Venues NSW have signed a five-year deal with a further option and I am delighted to welcome them on board as the first ever naming rights sponsor of this iconic sporting ground,” Minister Upton said. “With a long history as home of the Parramatta Eels, the Stadium is
continuing to attract record crowds with the Western Sydney Wanderers as co-tenants.” Both Ms. Upton and PIRTEK CEO Stephen Dutton touched on the importance that signing PIRTEK - as a proud Western Sydney based company - has on the Stadium operators. “This adds up to significant economic benefits for Western Sydney local businesses, with the flow on effect of ticket sales and visitor spending,” she added. “PIRTEK commenced its business in Western Sydney 33 years ago and whilst expanding both nationally and internationally it is still our spiritual homeland,” said Mr. Dutton. “Branding on this iconic stadium in a long term deal with Venues NSW was a logical step for us as it fitted in well with our national branding strategy. “Western Sydney Wanderers are setting the benchmark for stadium atmosphere nationally and will take the A-League and PIRTEK Stadium to the football world.”
PIRTEK FAREWELLS THE EELS After nine years as part of the fabric of the PIRTEK Parramatta Eels, PIRTEK brought down the curtain on its involvement at the end of the 2013 Telstra Premiership. Whilst it will still have a close connection to the Club as the naming rights sponsor to Parramatta Stadium, PIRTEK has re-directed its sponsorships into new markets important to the business. The association with the Eels was a highly successful one for the Western Sydney company and was a great driver of fundraising for the fight against Prostate Cancer. The season came to an end for the Eels with the news that Ricky Stuart would depart bound for Canberra. Off the back of Stuart’s announcement, Scott Seward was appointed the CEO of the Club. Seward was the General Manager of Membership and Consumer Business at the Eels and presided over a 49% increase in Membership sales through 2013 - the highest of any NRL club. To add further clout to the Eels heading into 2014, Jarryd Hayne threw his weight behind the club declaring that he is 100 percent committed to them.
PIRTEK has taken on the historic first ever naming rights partnership at Parramatta Stadium
PIRTEK thanks all of the staff, players and fans at the Eels for their support throughout the years and looks forward to working closely with the club at the newly named PIRTEK Stadium. FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au

INTERVIEW - MEET
JAMES CORBETT “HISTORY IS WHAT LEADS TO THE FUTURE. THE PIRTEK ENDURO CUP IS ABOUT WHERE THE SPORT IS GOING.” James Corbett is one of Australia’s most respected sculptors, creating many amazing pieces from automotive parts. His workshop on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is like a treasure trove for tinkerers with parts new and old populating his small workshop. He has had works commissioned from all over the world - including a replica of an historic Auto Union Formula 1 racecar for Audi. One of the toughest challenges he’s been faced with is the creation of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup for V8 Supercars. He took some 400 pieces from the PIRTEK product range to create the Cup. FLUID visited James on the Sunshine Coast for this chat. *You state your pieces are “by nature, a solved puzzle” - what is the puzzle the PIRTEK Enduro Cup presents? In some ways, this motto applies and in other ways, it does not. In my art I create something from a multiple of parts, in this scenario I have some already constructed pieces which I will need to place
10
FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au
PIRTEK parts around, so it is not really the same sort of thing. *Working with PIRTEK pieces takes you away from your natural habitat of old car parts - does that provide a different challenge? I had to think about it in a different manner, it’s another challenge, it’s a little scary if I could be honest. What I was asked to achieve here is perhaps more formal in a way than what I’d normally do. What I normally do in many ways is a bit rustic, if you like, compared to a piece of jewellery as this trophy is. *As an artist going outside this comfort zone, is that something that you enjoy? I do like a challenge, but a lot of people were told that I was doing this, so there is another level of expectation. So you have to make it and make it good! Often when you are doing a challenge and something different, no one knows until you’ve finished it and you’re happy with it, this adds a lot of extra pressure, as it is a new frontier for me.
*What are your thoughts on the PIRTEK materials you have to work with - are they easy to work with? There was some experimentation done as to how the pieces were to be grouped together and how they interacted with each other to create the end product. *Motor racing is about passion and the endurance races are about history and precision, just as art is. Are the history of the events that the PIRTEK Enduro Cup represents delivering you inspiration? No - with this project my eyes were firmly on the future of the events and where they are headed, rather than looking back at the past. The history is what leads to the future. The PIRTEK Enduro Cup is about where the sport is going this year there was so much that is new about the endurance races with this competition and the new manufacturers coming on board. That will be my inspiration. *These events are each Australian icons in their own way and you have worked with iconic Australians
such as Steve Irwin and Greg Norman in the past. By what measure does it mean to create something that will be ranked with some of the most iconic sporting trophies in Australia? I think it is a big pat on the back to be asked to complete this project. It is a good thing to leave as a legacy. Regardless of how many years the PIRTEK Enduro Cup will be used, photographs of the trophy with its winners will always be used. It will make it almost immortal, which creates a legacy. *Those familiar with your works will see life-size animals and humanoids, however your representations of vehicles are at one-sixth scale - what is the thought process behind this? The animals and people I like to do life-size wherever possible - it gives the work life and those viewing the art can identify what the piece is. Someone can look at a piece and know instantly that it is a dog, but oh, look it’s made of car parts. It is, I guess, a conflict of having something that looks like it is ready to move and can move and be alive or interact with you the way it looks, but you know that it can’t. Making vehicles smaller is borne from using the car parts, that is something I really enjoy doing. It is done at a scale that people would have in their office or their loungeroom. As you get bigger, it is hard to use things that are not the actual thing - if it was a wheel for example, I’d never use a wheel to become a wheel, for example. It is part of the trickery of what I try and create. Doing vehicles fullsize doesn’t work as well as doing smaller versions.
Full size motorbikes might work, mind you, however a lot of that comes from the rider. *All you do is instinctive, where does your inspiration come from? There isn’t a written plan but there’s a strong picture in my mind of what I am trying to achieve and as much as anything with the animals as much as even the shape of it, the look of how it is interacting with the viewer. Getting the eyes is really important and something I place a great deal of time on so it can interact with people, along with ensuring the size and scale are in proportion. *Throughout your career you’ve developed some amazing sculptures, has there been a challenge that has been more difficult than another? That happens a lot and funnily enough that can happen when you think it shouldn’t happen, for example I could do a Pelican and then three months later I might do another Pelican that is similar but different. The first work could have gone together quite well, then you move onto the next one and then it isn’t going together well. You become so frustrated - you think I’ve done one of these before and it came together so easily, why won’t it happen today? *Do you feel the personality of the piece living through the final sculpture - if it is difficult can you tell at the end? Yes. *So you have a fun, joyous Pelican and an almost ‘evil’ Pelican in some respects? In a way, but I don’t do evil things, people don’t like evil things. With my work, those who purchase the work want to have some appeal from it and be a happy thing, which is how I work. Other people do things that can be nasty and that type of work, but that doesn’t interest me at all. With cars and bikes, I am imagining what it would be like to drive that car, I’m thinking about what it would feel like to be on that bike and riding it when I’m building it. I try to imagine all of that quite strongly.
from over 600 pieces, to produce a replica of one of the most famous cars in the world must have stretched your thought processes to the limit? The biggest challenge working on that piece was working on such a large scale. I had to think of a completely different way to do it and how I was going to approach it to make it different to other pieces. By that I mean in reference to the parts that are floating around and how they would piece together. My brain is like a big computer in some respects in situations like this, churning through what parts would fit where and do what. *To see your works in UK art galleries, in the USA, Dubai, on TV and alongside many famous people must be tremendously rewarding - is there one honour or piece that stands above all else? Seeing my work on TV with different things doesn’t really do much for me. I think the biggest buzz I get is actually watching people’s reactions to the artworks. It is good having them in overseas galleries and so on, I mean you need that, but you aren’t really doing that to make a living from it. I don’t pay to have my works in galleries so I can say that my work is in that gallery that’s ridiculous. If I think the place is right and if I think they are going to sell them, then I’m happy to have my pieces in a gallery. Whilst obtaining those accolades and placing works in the galleries or public spaces helps the business side, you have to consider this as a business first and foremost, otherwise you won’t be around too long.
*An iconic piece was the historic Auto Union that you produced FLUID MAGAZINE I www.pirtek.com.au

PERCAT GETS FULL TIME GIG Young South Australian driver, Nick Percat, who PIRTEK has been supporting throughout the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship will get his first full-time opportunity in the main V8 Supercars Championship next season. He will drive a fourth car under the Walkinshaw Racing banner alongside the pair of Holden Racing Team Commodores and the Supercheap Auto Commodore that will be driven by Tim Slade (replacing the retiring Russell Ingall). Percat was granted the chance when long time South Australian
V8 Supercars license holder, James Rosenberg brought his license across to the factory Holden team after being with the Mercedes Erebus Motorsport team. Rosenberg for many years had been teamed with Slade. “To know that I will finally be on the V8 Supercars main series grid next year is a dream come true, something I’ve been working towards since I was five years old,” Percat said. “I can’t thank James Rosenberg enough for giving me the chance,

and all the people at Walkinshaw Racing for having faith in me. “The opportunity also couldn’t come at a better time as the trend at WR is encouraging – the cars are showing great speed, and some very talented, experienced and successful new staff are coming on board next year, who will only add strength to the organisation.” The 2011 Bathurst 1000 Champion had an early taste of what single driver V8 Supercars competition was like at the Sydney Telstra 500 when he stood in for the injured James Courtney.

PERCAT ENDS SEASON ON A HIGH Nick Percat charged to second place overall in the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia Championship with a sensational performance at the ARMOR ALL Gold Coast 600. The PIRTEK-backed driver in the Coates Hire Porsche 911 won two of the three Surfers Paradise races and did everything he could to thwart Craig Baird from winning his record fifth Australian Carrera Cup crown, however he wasn’t able to - Baird taking the Championship by 35.5 points. Despite piecing together five race wins at various points throughout the season, the Gold Coast was Percat’s first ever round win in Porsche Carrera Cup - a result he was ecstatic with.
“We’ve had a fast car in the last few rounds but I haven’t been able to translate it into round wins. I’ve been really happy with the way Team BRM got the Coates Hire/ PIRTEK car sorted,” said Percat. For his first time in the all-Porsche single make Series, the season could be considered a success for the young South Aussie, who not only quickly took to the much different characteristics of the Carrera Cup car, but also became acquainted to a left hand drive racecar for the first time.

STONER LOOKS AHEAD AFTER SYDNEY FINALE Casey Stoner is looking ahead to a break after finishing his first and only year in the Dunlop V8 Supercars Development Series. Drawing support from PIRTEK and joining main series Champion team, Triple 8 Race Engineering, Stoner has had a challenging transition from two to four wheels. He has shown his true Champion quality throughout what has been one of the most competitive Development Series seasons in its history. Stoner survived the carnage of the Sydney Olympic Park torture test to walk away with a top 10 finish in the final race of the year, finishing ninth after taking a 12th placed finish in the first race. He has not closed the door on racing in the future, but after stepping straight into V8 Supercars after his MotoGP career drew to a close, Stoner is looking forward to a break, taking up his passion for fishing and seeing parts of Australia, which he hasn’t called home since the age of 14. “I’ll be spending time from here on with the family, I’ve not spent any
more than two weeks in one spot since I was 14, so I’ll be looking to beat that record,” said Stoner. “Next year, we’ll hopefully be seeing a bit of Australia that I haven’t seen before with the family in a camper trailer and that will no doubt involve fishing and many other activities like that.”

THE PIRTEK EELS GREATEST OF ALL TIME Nathan Hindmarsh was given the unenviable task of pulling together who he thought was the PIRTEK Eels Team of all time. Encompassing the PIRTEK years from 2005 to 2013, we asked the legend himself to come up with a 17-man squad that he felt best represented the Eels and PIRTEK in that time. We then threw it open to the fans to vote for their best of all time - not an easy task - and there were some interesting names that came up in both teams!
