Living will booklet a popular item in aging families Pittsburgh Catholic Staff Report The Pittsburgh Catholic has printed a booklet, “Living Will and Health Care Power of Attorney,” regarding what everyone should know about advance health care directives. The contents of the booklet were written by the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, which is the public affairs arm of the state’s Catholic bishops and dioceses. There are 10 Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania, comprised of eight Latin-rite and two Byzantine-rite. “We believed at the Pittsburgh Catholic that this issue has caused a lot of confusion, both within the medical and legal community, and certainly the Catholic population as a whole,” said William Cone, newspaper editor. “We believed that this excellent document needed wide distribution as it clarifies very strongly the Catholic principles involved when executing a living will.” The printing of the brochure was made possible by the sponsorship of The Catholic Cemeteries Association and The Catholic Funeral Plan. “These organizations, which provide marvelous service to the Catholic community and the diocese, deserve both thanks and support for what they did to assist the Pittsburgh Catholic in distributing this booklet,” Cone said. A health care directive in Pennsylvania can be a living will, a health care power of attorney or a written combination of the two. A living will is a document that sets forth a person’s wishes and gives instructions about health care when the person has an end-stage medical condition or is permanently unconscious. A health care power of attorney is a document that designates someone to make health care decisions for you. A team from the PCC and the Pennsylvania Catholic Health Association, legal counsel and a moral theologian assisted the bishops in publishing the “Living Will and Health Care Power of Attorney,” said Amy Hill, spokeswoman for the PCC. “Some changes were made to the Pennsylvania law governing advance health care directives,” Hill said. “The bishops used the occasion to update a living will and health care power of

Rather than including checkboxes, the living will allows you to designate a proxy to make medical decisions for you if you’re not able to communicate your wishes. This designation is preferable to a “checkbox” format that lists treatments you do or don’t want, because every treatment can be considered ordinary or extraordinary depending on the circumstances. Therefore, it’s not advisable to say ahead of time that you absolutely don’t want a given treatment. attorney document for Catholics and encourage people to use it. “It presented a good opportunity for the bishops to remind us that, ‘Death is not to be feared as the end of our existence, rather it is the doorway to our eternal destiny.’ Yet, many people may be confused or afraid to think about how they want to be treated at the end of their life. The question-and-answer booklet is designed to inform and enlighten Catholics about the teachings of the church on health care decision-making.” “Anyone and everyone will benefit from reading the booklet,” she said. “None of us can predict what we will face at the end of our lives or the lives of our loved ones,” Hill said. “An advance health care directive, especially one that reflects what we believe about the sanctity and dignity of human life, is worth the effort. It is the best way to ensure that you will be treated according to your wishes, and it is a generous gift to your loved ones who are placed in the decision-making position for you.” The booklet is an update and expansion of the living will the PCC authorized in June 1993.

Senior Life and Resource Guide 2017

The living will is a very thorough document, it summarizes the church’s teaching that: human life is sacred; human dignity is inviolable; euthanasia is not morally permissible; nutrition and hydration should be continued; ordinary care, including pain management, should be given; and, if possible, a pregnant woman should be given nutrition and hydration until her unborn child is born. The living will is a valuable resource for anyone facing an end-of-life decision, but it would also be helpful to any adult, in that it explains Catholic teaching regarding the end of life. The living will also includes a helpful question-and-answer section that addresses such questions as “What does the church say about medically assisted nutrition and hydration” and “What should I do with my health care directive?” For additional information or to obtain a booklet, contact the Pittsburgh Catholic at 412-471-1252, ext. 3573.

Taking steps to ensure your future financial security Source: Social Security Administration

Step 1 Get to know your Social Security We’re more than retirement Social Security is with you throughout your life — supporting friends and family alike. We’re there from day one, when your parent applied for your Social Security number at the hospital. We provide financial security to many children and adults before they reach retirement, including the chronically ill, children of deceased parents and wounded warriors.

5

Step 2 Verify your earnings Your work history directly impacts your future benefits Your benefits are calculated using your employment records. Your employer reports your earnings to Social Security. It’s important that you use your personal my Social Security account to check these records yearly to ensure that your earnings are recorded accurately.

Step 3 Estimate your benefits Retirement planning starts with us Social Security is part of a strong retirement plan. We’ll be here when you need us, but you need to take steps to ensure you have enough other retirement income for a comfortable quality of life. Want to know your retirement age, life expectancy, or future benefits? We have several different calculators that can give you an estimate to fit your situation.

Step 4 Apply for benefits No need to visit an office Our secure website allows you to apply for benefits from the comfort of your home or preferred location. From retirement to disability to Medicare benefits, we have you and your loved ones covered.

Spirituality and aging: How it may differ during life’s later seasons Once a week Sister of St. Joseph Christine Kresho, meets with senior parishioners at Our Lady of Grace Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. Mostly in their 70s and 80s, the Spirit Companions are exploring what sister calls their “second childhood” in light of the Scripture call and its promise to grow into a time of new joy and a fuller life in God. “The group is the highlight of my week,” Sister Christine says. “These participants are such an inspiration to me and a perfect example that the journey to wisdom, the growth in spirituality, never ends. They speak honestly about their faith struggles, and welcome the image of an inclusive and unconditional loving God.” Since 2005, Sister Christine has served as pastoral associate at Our Lady of Grace, whose membership numbers nearly 1,000 parishioners with approximately twothirds of them over the age of 80. She has drawn on her extensive experiences and encounters with seniors to write a new book, “Second Childhood: Aging into Divine Relationship.” The

Sister Christine recently spoke to Barbara Hecht, director of communications for the Sisters of St. Joseph, about spirituality and aging:

Q: Why is spirituality important to those who are aging? As noted by Father Richard Rohr, OFM, religion is for those who are afraid of hell; spirituality is for those who have gone through hell. In Spirit Companions, there is an underlying theme of expanding or growing in our understanding of who God is for us. I have been told often, verbally and in writing, by the participants how much it means to them; how the God they now recognize is so different from the God they knew before. Some recall a harsh male image, but now they welcome God as a father whose strength pulls them out of an abyss, but also a mother who hugs them when they cry. Q: What forms can spirituality take for older adults? As one experiences more loss, sickness and diminishment in their lives,

intercessory prayer becomes an important channel of spirituality for many. Many women tell me that they talk to their deceased husbands. Some reach out prayerfully to parents, other loved ones and friends who have passed away. The Communion of Saints complements and supports all they believe about a better place, being with other loved ones and eternal happiness. Just as our aging sisters receive life from praying for the needs of others, so do other seniors. Seniors, though, may approach intercessory prayer differently, depending on their image of God. Some envision God as a “far-away” image who answers prayers based on the number that are said or the “goodness” of the person reciting them. Others see a God who loves them unconditionally, who walks with them, celebrates with them, cries with them and understands them through all circumstances. Q: How can one help cultivate a healthy spirituality for older persons? There is not one way. Senior adults are very aware that they deserve respect for having aged in wisdom. SPIRITUALITY Continued from Page 22 in conversation and listen. Some are comfortable and need the security of the image of God that they have held on to for years. Others are still seeking, and open to changing their image of God. It is always good to remember that even when we think we are seekers, it is always God who searches for us. It is God who arouses, stirs, and encourages us to pursue our Creator who is not only waiting to be found, but is at the same time seeking for us. Q. What are some simple ways that a family member can identify, and, thus, perhaps, address spiritual needs of an aging loved one? Talk, listen and ask. Help them stay connected. The yearning for connection, the attraction to unity, is built into the universe story as well as our DNA. Moments of connection in personal lives warm our hearts; stories of connection between people, among nations, and all of creation, tells us that all of life is relational.

Some are comfortable and need the security of the image of God that they have held on to for years. Others are still seeking, and open to changing their image of God. It is always good to remember that even when we think we are seekers, it is always God who searches for us. Q: What are the blessings that come from God in the aging process that arrive alongside the sometimes difficult experiences of illness, isolation or grief? It’s a time for “wings.” In the first half of life, they grew their roots in the faith. Now they can come to know God in a different way and relax into their Creator’s embrace with trust. Life has shown them that God will never leave them.
