FOO FIGHTERS NATE MENDEL TALKS PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson

Foo Fighters’ bassist Nate Mendel has some advice for those attending the rock band’s concert at CONSOL Energy Center this fall. “At the end of the night we’re going to be sweaty, tired, and possibly hoarse, and we expect nothing less from you. So, uh, wear comfortable shoes,” says Mendel. Led by Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins, Pat Smear and Mendel are the Grammy Award winning Foo Fighters. Mendel, the first of the group’s members drafted by Grohl in 1995, has been a constant on all of the band’s albums and tours. Sometimes referred to “the quiet one” or the “anchor” of the group, Mendel shares his thoughts on the popularity of Foo Fighters, their newest hit album, “Wasting Light,” and his journey as a musician. All six of the Foo Fighters’ earlier albums were nominated for the Grammy Awards Best Rock Album and three of them won the award. Foo Fighters’ Pittsburgh performance follows the debut of the group’s seventh album, “Wasting Light.” The newest album distinguished itself by immediately topping the US Billboard 200 chart, a first for Foo Fighters. It also topped charts internationally through Europe as well as in Australia and New Zealand. “Wasting Light” also grabbed four-star lead reviews from “Rolling Stone” and “People”, and an A- lead review from “Entertainment Weekly” that states, “Foo Fighters never feel like a backward-looking band. Light is a muscular rock & roll throwdown, featuring the Foos delivering exactly the kind of catchy, pummeling anthems they’re known for, with total disregard for the whims of the masses.” continued on page 6

continued from page 5

Asked what about Wasting Light -- or the Foo Fighters – gave this set the boost to the top, Mendel says: “It’s a little tough to say, from the perspective of a player in the band. I think there’s a bit of absence making the heart grow fonder at work. We took a couple years off between this and the last record. Also, there is a difference between this and the last few records, it’s more direct, I think, in the song structures, and perhaps that’s making it more accessible.” Contemplating the wide appeal of Foo Fighters’ songs, Mendel says, “It’s honest music, maybe that is part of it. We enjoy playing, making records, and touring, and we work hard at it, and I think -- I ~Nate Mendel hope -- that that is something

that comes across to people when they encounter our band. If we’re enjoying ourselves and doing this for the right reasons, it creates an authenticity that people can relate to.” Talking about where Foo Fighters music is going, Mendel says: “Our new album was a little bit of an effort to simplify things, and do things the way we did them when we were younger musicians; playing in the garage, recording to tape, and choosing very direct songs, as opposed to some of the more exploratory songs of the last few albums. I think the band was synthesizing. If I had to guess, I’d say that would be setting us up to branch out again and try some reinvention, but that is really difficult to say. We’ll have to figure that out when the time comes to begin writing again. “As far as music in general, I think that we’re pretty ripe for some reconstruction and reinvention. It seems like the past has been pretty thoroughly mined which would open up space for something large and challenging to surface.” Foo Fighters made the music scene 16 years ago, and Mendel says that being an older band playing to younger fans feels “about as weird as you’d imagine.” “We have been doing music since we were kids, and somewhere along the way we became men, like old men, with children and grey hair and all

the rest. And yet, you still feel like playing music, so you just deal with the generational issue as best you can,” he says. Reflecting on Foo Fighters tours early on and now, Mendel recalls: “A couple of the early tours really stick out, probably because it was all so new at the time. There was our first van tour, opening for Mike Watt, and the tour we did of Southeast Asia with the Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth. Mendel says that this summer’s European tour is turning out very well: “I think (it) could be one of the most memorable. It’s five weeks long, which is like a tour we would have done in ‘97, although it’s completely different because we’re headlining festivals now, and also traveling with all of our children. “Being able to share the experience with them is incredible.” Asked if he has a favorite superhero, Mendel says he wasn’t ever into the comic book thing, but “Catwoman was kind of foxy.” Does he have a real life hero? Mendel talks about Seasick Steve who recently did a guest performance with Foo Fighters in England. “I rode to the show with him.” says Mendel. “He…made a full life for himself doing things his own way and now makes hit records in his 70s. I don’t know if I’d call him a hero, but I respect that.” Talking about his childhood, Mendel recalls, “I just wanted to ride skateboards all day long, and then later ride skateboards and play music. Later I thought it might make sense to have a career, so I went to college and studied journalism.” On performing, Mendel says, “I like that it’s still a challenge. I’m absolutely not a flawless musician, and as many times as we’ve played some of these songs, I always know that I can play it better and I love trying to do that.” The best thing about his career, says Mendel, “The freedom -- and being able to say that I like my job.” While they last, tickets for the Foo Fighters Pittsburgh concert are available at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Box Office at CONSOL Energy Center, and through all Ticketmaster locations, at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000.

JOEL OSTEEN BRINGS ‘A NIGHT OF HOPE’ TO PITTSBURGH By: Pam Thompson

Joel Osteen has been looking forward to bringing “A Night of Hope” to Pittsburgh. Talking about his September 9 appearance at CONSOL Energy Center, the pastor is enthusiastic: “It’s special to go back to Pittsburgh. It’s been a while since we’ve been there. There are lots of good people and friends there, and we look forward to seeing them.” And in regard to his first visit to CONSOL Energy Center, Osteen, says, “It’s exciting! I can’t wait to see it.” This comes from the man accustomed to preaching before thousands weekly as pastor of what Forbes Magazine has called America’s largest church. Each week, Osteen, senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, preaches in person to more than 40,000 attendees who come to his church, as well as a television audience of more than 10 million American households. Asked what his Pittsburgh audience will remember about his ministry, Osteen says, “I hope that they’ll remember our core message that God is good. He is for them.” He says that for his audience, “It’s different at an event, more informal. I take time to talk with people and I hope to encourage them. I hope that they will go home better than when they came.” Osteen, a three-time, New York Times best-selling author, theorizes about what has caused people to flock to him and the Lakewood Church. He says: “I think that there’s the message that’s positive and hopeful…. Many things pull us down, like the economy and natural disasters. Our message is about hope…. It’s practical. Lots of churches are continued on page 31

continued from page 29

Joel and Victoria Osteen

making their messages more practical.” He says, “My goals personally are to keep growing, learning and getting better at what I do.” For Lakewood Church, Osteen wants to impact more people in a positive way. He says that using media and events like the one in Pittsburgh will help to reach people who might not have grown up in church like he did to let them know that God is relevant to us all. For years he stayed behind the scenes of the church founded and led by his father, opting to produce the local weekly broadcasts of Lakewood’s services and declining his father’s requests to preach. “I just never had the desire. I don’t believe it was the right time. My personality is quiet and reserved. I was very nervous,” says Osteen. In January of 1999 Osteen was 35 when he preached for the first time. Looking back, he says, “It was funny. My dad called that Monday and asked me to preach that Sunday like he had a thousand times before.” “I did it for my father,” and at the time Osteen thought that he had fulfilled a one-time request for his dad. It was the last Sunday of his father’s life. “When my Dad died, I took a step of faith” says Osteen, who preaches that God has a plan for every person. “I never dreamed it would lead to all it has led to.” 31 ]
