Record-Setting Luke Combs to Play PPG Paints Arena on his First Headliner Tour By: Pam Thompson

The record-setting, country music sensation, Luke Combs comes to Pittsburgh in November as a first-time headliner on his Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour. His first-ever concert at PPG Paints Arena comes days after the scheduled release of Combs’ second studio album, as well as this year’s Country Music Association Awards where Combs is nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, Musical Event of the Year for “Brand New Man,” and with Wyatt B. Durrette and Robert Williford for Song of the Year for the hit “Beautiful Crazy.” Combs’ special guests for the concert are Morgan Wallen, who is nominated for the CMA Award for New Artist of the Year, and Jameson Rodgers, who released his single, “Some Girls” in June. Combs has plenty to celebrate on his highly successful, house-packing tour, which runs into December.

In August, Combs set a record with his debut album, This One’s for You, becoming the male artist topping the Country Albums chart for the most nonconsecutive weeks. Released in 2017, the album has been No. 1 on the ranking for 46 weeks, unseating Randy Travis’ Always and Forever, which in 1987 began its chart-topping run of 43 weeks. Further, Combs is closing in on Shania Twain’s 20-times platinum Come on Over, which scored 50 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Country Albums chart between 1997 and 2000. This One’s for You certified double platinum in March. It spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in 2018, making it the highest selling country album last year. Also in August, Combs performed “Beautiful Crazy” at the Academy of Country Music Awards program, where he won New Male Artist of the Year. He also received best new artist awards in 2018 from the Country Music Association and iHeartRadio Music. In July, Combs became the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry. He was inducted a month after a surprise invitation during a performance at the country music mecca. Continued on page 7

In June, the singer/songwriter released his fourth EP, The Prequel. It went to No. 1 on the Country Chart in the U.S., giving Combs the top two spots on the ranking with This One’s for You holding the No. 2 spot. The new EP also landed at No. 4 on the top albums charts in the U.S. and Canada. All five tracks from The Prequel made the Top 10 of the Country Songs Sales chart. They also made the Top 25 of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Combs was the first to attain this accomplishment since Johnny Cash did so in 1959. Combs with Leon Bridges also won the CMT Music Award for Performance of the Year for “Beautiful Crazy” in June. In May, he won 2019 Billboard Music Awards for Top Country Artist, Top Country Male Artist and Top Country Album for This One’s for You. That month, Combs also released “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” his sixth single and the lead track on The Prequel. The single peaked at No. 2 on the U.S. Country chart, No. 1 on the Canada Country chart, No. 21 on the U.S. Hot 100, and No. 30 on the Canada Hot 100. Combs has the distinction of all six of his singles peaking at No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart, and all charting in the U.S. and Canada on the Country and Hot 100 charts. “Hurricane,” his first single (2016), went to No. 3 and No. 2 on the Country Songs charts in the U.S. and Canada, respectively; No. 31 on the U.S. Hot 100, and No. 62 on the Canada Hot 100, earning four-times platinum in the U.S. and double platinum in Canada. “When It Rains It Pours,” Combs’ second single (2017), topped the Country Songs charts in the U.S. and Canada, ranked at No. 31 on the U.S. Hot 100, and No. 54 on the Canada Hot 100. It attained triple platinum in the U.S., double platinum in Canada, and platinum in Australia. Three more singles followed in 2018. “One Number Away,” Combs’ third single, went to No. 3 and No. 1 on the U.S. and Canada Country Songs charts, respectively, and peaked at No. 34 and No. 87 on the Hot 100 charts in the U.S. and Canada, respectively. It earned double platinum in the U.S. and gold in Canada. “She Got the Best of Me,” the fourth single, peaked at No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 1 in Canada on the Country charts, No. 31 in the U.S. and No. 52 in Canada on the Hot 100 charts. It is platinum certified in the U.S. and gold in Canada and Australia. “Beautiful Crazy,” the fifth single, went to No. 1 on the U.S. and Canada Country charts. It peaked at No. 21 and No. 35 on the U.S. and Canada Hot 100 charts, respectively. It earned double platinum in the U.S., and gold in Canada and Australia. In March, Combs won iHeartRadio Music’s Country Artist of the Year Award, and he became the first artist to simultaneously top all five Billboard Country charts for multiple weeks. |7|

The Black Keys Set Fall Concert By: Pam Thompson

The Black Keys – Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney – perform at PPG Paints Arena this fall on their 31-date tour of North America, “Let’s Rock.” Special guests for the Pittsburgh show are Modest Mouse and Jessy Wilson. The concert comes five years after The Black Keys played PPG Paints Arena on the Turn Blue World Tour in September 2014. The pair first played the arena in the spring of 2013 on the final leg of The El Camino Tour. The new tour supports The Black Keys’ self-produced album of the same name, which made its debut in June. It is the duo’s ninth studio album and its first album in five years. All of the tracks on “Let’s Rock” are co-written by Auerbach and Carney. Three singles preceded the new album. “Lo/Hi,” released in March, is the duo’s first new music since its album, Turn Blue in 2014. The song gave The Black Keys its first No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. It also topped the U.S. Alternative Songs Chart, went to No. 5 on the U.S. Rock Chart, and made it to No. 86 on the Canada Hot 100. Released in April, the second single, “Eagle Birds” went to No. 25 on the U.S. Rock Chart. The third single, “Go,” followed in May and went to No. 18 on the U.S. Rock Chart. Its comical music video garnered more than 2.8 million views on YouTube in approximately a month’s time. Continued on page 19

Three more new singles for World War Joy were issued this spring: o “Kills You Slowly” in March o “Do You Mean” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Bülow in April o “Call You Mine” with Bebe Rexha in May. The Chainsmokers co-wrote all of the new singles with a cadre of collaborators. Sick Boy, released in December, followed the individual releases of its 10 singles, and two EPs, issued throughout last year. It went to No. 53 on the Billboard 200, and charted in Australia, Canada and Norway. It made gold status in Canada and Brazil. The Chainsmokers won Billboard Music Awards’ Top Dance Dance/ Electronic Artist in 2017, 2018 and 2019, American Music Awards’ Favorite Electronic/Dance Music Artist in 2016 and 2017, and iHeartRadio Music Awards’ 2017 Best New Artist and Best New Pop Artist, as well as Dance Artist of the Year (2017 and 2018). Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band to Perform in Pittsburgh on Final Tour By: Pam Thompson

Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band perform in Pittsburgh on the Roll Me Away Tour – The Final Tour this October. The Pittsburgh concert was added to the tour itinerary in June. Kicked off last November, the tour has been packing venues. Seger and his Silver Bullet Band had performed in front of more than 700,000 fans by June. The show at PPG Paints Arena comes just over two years after Seger and his band last appeared in Pittsburgh on the Runaway Train Tour. It turned out that Pittsburgh was Seger’s last concert that year. A health issue resulted in the postponement of the remaining 19 concerts. While Seger was recuperating from surgery, his 18th studio album, I Knew You When, released in November 2017. The album is dedicated to Seger’s friend, the late Glenn Frey. The two met early in their musical careers. Seger collaborated with Frey, Don Henley and J.D. Souther on the Eagles 1979 hit, “Heartache Tonight.” That recording received the 1979 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Continued on page 39

All-New Jurassic World Live Creates Dinosaur Adventure for Audiences on Isla Nublar By: Pam Thompson

“Everything you can imagine is real.” – Pablo Picasso The inaugural, all-new Jurassic World Live Tour comes to PPG Paints Arena for seven shows over four days in October to transport audience members of all ages to Isla Nublar for a closer-than-ever-before dinosaur experience. The first-time arena show brings Jurassic World to life with an original story that takes the audience on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Isla Nublar, where things take a terrifying turn as a raging Indominus Rex causes chaos in the legendary theme park. The audience joins a team of scientists and trained Velociraptor Blue to battle evil conspirators and prehistoric powerhouses – Triceratops, Pteranodons and Tyrannosaurus rex – to save the world’s smartest dinosaur. Set in the time period between the films – Jurassic World (2015) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) – Jurassic World Live’s realism and authenticity to the on-screen dinosaurs brings a new experience to audiences – one of being there with living, breathing dinosaurs. Nicole Feld, Executive Vice President of Feld Entertainment says, “We are in live entertainment. There is no such thing as CGI.” Describing the show, Feld says, “The audience can get closer than ever before. There’s an incredible interaction that happens between our dinosaurs and the human performers. We have 24 different dinosaurs, seven different species. It encompasses the entire area…. From the minute you walk in, you feel that you are in Isla Nublar.” The Tyrannosaurus rex, more than 40 feet long, weighs four tons and fits into two shipping containers, according to Feld who says, “She looks like the real deal – teeth and all.” It has taken two years and a massive team of technical talents, theatrical specialists, actors and crew to bring Jurassic World to life. Against a backdrop of captivating scenery, the film-accurate, life-size dinosaurs, each custom built with the latest technology and Hollywood studio quality, are brought to life. The beasts take center stage, powered by remote controlled animatronics and dinoteers, performers inside the dinosaurs who control the creatures’ actions. Jurassic World’s distinctive score adds to the larger-than-life, immersive journey to enthrall fans of all ages. Through a combination of projection and practical scenery, the arena transforms into the dense jungles of Isla Nublar, where real Gyrospheres roll through the valley and scientists work to unravel a corrupt plan and save an all-new dinosaur from a terrible fate. Jurassic World Live, created for all ages, features special effects including strobe lights and theatrical fog. A performance runs about an hour and 50 minutes, including a 15-20-minute intermission. A pre-show provides an interactive educational component. The production’s creators advise parents to determine what is age appropriate for their children. The live show is the newest addition to the Jurassic World franchise which includes to date, two feature films, Jurassic World – The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, a S.T.E.M. program, a mobile game, and toys, including Legos and educational items. Feld Entertainment,® the worldwide leader in producing and presenting live family entertainment experiences that bring people together and uplift the human spirit, has entertained millions of families in more than 75 countries and on six continents.
