THRILL OF NCAA® CHAMPIONSHIP BRINGS MARCH MADNESS® TO PITTSBURGH Fantastic teams, roaring fans, cheerleaders, bands and lights all combine when the thrill of the NCAA® Division I Men’s Basketball Championship once again comes to Pittsburgh. The city hosts eight top college teams for Rounds 2 and 3 this March. Tickets for championship play at CONSOL Energy Center sold out six months before the first tip-off, making it the first of the eight venues across the country for 2nd and 3rd round play to do so. Two of the eight teams playing at CONSOL Energy Center make it to the Sweet Sixteen. In the process, Pittsburgh — recently named among the top 20 destinations in the world to visit in 2012 by National Geographic Traveler — gets to show off its many attractions and to demonstrate what makes Pittsburgh such a great sports town. Ron English, who seems to be just the type of detail-oriented executive that the NCAA® would want as its Director of Championships and Alliances, came to town to view some basketball action at CONSOL Energy Center for himself and to discuss arrangements for the championship with officials from Duquesne University, CONSOL Energy Center and VisitPittsburgh, the three primary organizations working with the NCAA® on championship preparations. “The number one goal that we have is to put on a positive, enjoyable experience for student athletes on the court. continued on page 6

continued from page 5

We feel that we can definitely provide that at CONSOL Energy Center and here in Pittsburgh,” says English adding, “We want fans to come and enjoy the games and the experience.” English explains, “Our process is to send out a bid document across the country. Anyone in the (NCAA®) membership has the right to bid. Our host here is Duquesne University which partnered with CONSOL Energy Center to bid.”

We get to show the pride that we have in the city. It gives our fans access to a great sporting event… not just for a single event but as part of month-long NCAA® March Madness®. ~Greg Amodio

The 10-member men’s basketball committee reviews the bids, and all Round 2 and 3 hosts, which are spread across the country, are selected at the same time. “I think that there were three reasons the NCAA® was attracted to Pittsburgh” — according to English not in any specific order — “The city, the confidence in Duquesne University that they will do a great job in assisting us in putting on the championship, and what is a very nice building,” Greg Amodio, Athletic Director at Duquesne University, calls the winning bid a great cooperative venture between Duquesne University, CONSOL Energy Center and VisitPittsburgh. “The NCAA® Championship staff has a manual,” says Amodio, holding up his fingers to put across that the guide is roughly the size of a metro phone directory. “The NCAA® has it down to a science. You fit your organizations’ capabilities into their formula and you get a marquee event for your locale.” “Hosting is an opportunity to promote a first class sports event in a great sports town,” says Amodio. He points out that Robert Morris University, the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University women’s and men’s basketball programs all have their home courts in the Pittsburgh area. The best part of hosting the championship is getting to show off the city, says Amodio. “We get to show the pride that we have in the city. It gives our fans access to a great sporting event…not just for a single event but as part of month-long NCAA® March Madness®.” continued on page 8

No question “ that Pittsburgh

“We’re excited and honored to have the NCAA® Basketball Championship coming to CONSOL Energy Center in March, 2012,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “When we were making the case for a new arena for our city, one of the prime selling points was the ability to bring prominent national events to Pittsburgh, and ~Greg Amodio NCAA® basketball was at the top of the list. We’re looking forward to a great atmosphere for the teams, fans and out-of-town guests.” Craig Davis, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, for VisitPittsburgh, the official tourism promotion agency for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, says, “The NCAA® Men’s Basketball Championship provides another ideal opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh as a great sports town — particularly, a great college basketball town. And, the Gold-LEED certified CONSOL Energy Center is the premier arena in the country. As the country’s first sustainable NHL hockey arena, its attractiveness, sightlines and superb amenities are unquestionable. It is another feather in Pittsburgh’s sports cap as a city committed to sustainability and sports.” Davis says, “Clearly, the return of the championship is another building block in CONSOL’s efforts to enhance its reputation as a great basketball venue. Pittsburgh is undeniably recognized as an incredible sports town, and adding this championship to the list of prestige events further enhances the city’s reputation. “Pittsburgh has a storied history of hosting major sports events. Just consider the 2006 MLB All-Star Game, East Coast Junior Girls National Volleyball Championship (multiple years) and NCAA® Women’s Basketball Championships — Rounds 1 and 2 — in 2007 and 2010. In 2016, Oakmont Country Club will again host the U.S. Open. The city also successfully reeled in two world-class fishing tournaments — the CITGO Bassmaster Classic in 2005 and the 2009 Forrest L. Wood Cup.” And there’s more says Davis, “No question that Pittsburgh is a great sports town. The city is consistently named among the top 10 best cities for sports by Sporting News. The Pittsburgh Penguins have the most popular website in the National Hockey League. Fox Sports rates PNC Park as the best ballpark in Major League Baseball. And, Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans are consistently ranked among the best football fans in the nation.” English adds that the NCAA® has chosen CONSOL Energy Center for the “Frozen Four®” in April 2013, and he acknowledges that good results

is a great sports town.

for the events scheduled in Pittsburgh can lead to additional NCAA® championships being hosted by the Steel City. Jay Roberts, General Manager of CONSOL Energy Center, can’t wait for the March championship to begin. He says, “I have worked in the sports and entertainment industry for more than 20 years and have been involved with thousands of events. One of my top five moments is still the ’97 NCAA® Championship at Mellon Arena when Number 15 seed Coppin State defeated Number 2 seed South Carolina. There were 17,000 plus fans in the building and almost all of them adopted the underdog. To this day, looking back still gives me a wave of exhilaration. I look forward to this March Madness® and what amazing moments await everyone in attendance” “VisitPittsburgh,” says Davis “is working with the local host, Duquesne University, as well as Pittsburgh hotels and community partners to roll out the red carpet for visitors. We’ll be providing “NCAA® Welcome to Pittsburgh” buttons to numerous entities – including CONSOL Energy Center staff, cab drivers, hotel frontline staff and, of course, our own VisitPittsburgh staff members. We’ll be encouraging visitors to stop by our WELCOME Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop, located in Fifth Avenue Place. This is a one-stop-shop for Pittsburgh maps, guide books, attraction information and souvenirs – and its staffed by friendly, knowledgeable Pittsburghers!”

PENGUINS OPEN PRACTICE 2011 You would have thought Justin Bieber was in town early Tuesday morning as the CONSOL Energy Center was rocking with approx. 8,000 students in the stands for the fourth annual School Open Practice. “Today there was a ton of energy and noise in the building with the number of school kids that were here,” Dan Byslma stated. The Pittsburgh Penguins welcomed students in grades 1-8 from 56 local schools for the special event as the organization hoped that the open practice would promote physical well-being, teamwork and the value of an education.

Students cheering and screaming during the fourth annual Penguins Open Practice.

“It’s awesome. We got a lot of new kids now and it’s a lot of fun, especially watching them play and learning about the players,” Saint Mary of the Mount 5th grader Jaylon Reedes expressed. “I think the fact that the Penguins are young they can reach the youth even more,” University Prep Middle School teacher Michael Yalch explained. The students were ecstatic from the moment they entered the gates. An hour before the players took the ice the “Let’s Go Pens” chants started as PensTVs Katie O’Malley served as an emcee from the stands. “I’m really excited because it is my first time seeing the Penguins play. I really like Fleury,” Pittsburgh Allegheny 8th grader Leslie Cooper bashfully admitted. Other than the Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Willow Smith pumping through the speakers, trivia questions about healthy eating habits were displayed on continued on page 22

It’s great to “ give back. It’s

the big screen in an effort to further educate the students about nutrition. Paul Steigerwald and Phil Bourque emceed practice from the bench, explaining drills, rules and player bios to the emphatic crowd. “I learned new players like (Steve) MacIntyre. I’ve never seen him play before. I didn’t know very many drills but when they started shooting (on net) I learned some,” Brookline K-8 8th grader Timmy Gaskill explained. ~Steve Sullivan “You watch a practice and you never know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it,” Yalch added. “To be able to have Bourqy and Steiggy commentating it puts it in perspective why they’re doing it.” Sidney Crosby, who did not practice, came to the bench for an interview with Bourque and Steigerwald greeted with loud cheers from the kids. He offered his thoughts about getting active and participating in sport to stay healthy while all who were involved The crowd of students roar with enthusiasm stressed the importance of education. as Matt Cooke tosses t-shirts to them. Throughout the whole practice there were fun facts scrolling across the bottom of the screen as every student also received a book about hockey. “It’s great to give back. It’s great for them to be able to see us in a little bit more relaxed atmosphere,” Steve Sullivan said. “We can have a little bit of fun with them and recognize them a little bit more than we do during a game.” It only got better after practice when some players swapped their skates for sneakers, and climbed into the stands to toss out shirts. Matt Cooke, Joe Vitale and Tyler Kennedy found themselves surrounded by the screaming sea of fans as Bylsma flung shirts from the ice before answering five fan questions. “I find it pretty amazing that I can still have that effect on a group of people,” Bylsma added. “Hopefully in addition they stop for a second and think about some of the things we’re doing on the ice and lessons they can learn.”

great for them to be able to see us in a little bit more relaxed atmosphere.

CONSOL ENERGY, PENGUINS TEAM TO HONOR COMMUNITY ALL-STARS Come to a Pittsburgh Penguins game at CONSOL Energy Center and see the stars shine. That’s hockey stars and CONSOL Energy Community All-Stars. The Pittsburgh Penguins and CONSOL Energy Inc., have partnered again to showcase non-profit organizations supported by CONSOL that are making a difference in communities throughout Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. During each of the Penguins regular home games, fans will see video recognizing organizations that help their communities by providing scholarships, emergency services, aid for those in need, and more.

David Peart, the Penguins Senior Vice President of Sales and Service says, “CONSOL has been doing a lot of good in the surrounding communities for a long time. We wanted to partner with them to highlight the people who are making a difference. For CONSOL this is important, because they want to be known for all the good things they do, not just putting their name on the building.” Laural Ziemba, Director of Community Relations at CONSOL Energy says that the company wanted to raise awareness of the non-profit organizations that it supports, the role that these services play in the community, the company’s philanthropic role in the community, and enliven the CONSOL Energy brand. “Our philanthropic program was a perfect place for us to start,” she says, noting that each year CONSOL gives millions of dollars to non-profit organizations managed by people who are proving a great service to the community. “We thought it would be a great idea to recognize some of these individuals who give back so much to their communities, whether it be through youth programs, emergency services, assisting those in need or volunteerism,” Ziemba says. CONSOL selected some organizations in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to visit CONSOL Energy Center, have lunch in Suite 66 and be filmed for a segment to air during one of the regular season games. continued on page 36

Ziemba says, “The benefits of this initiative are twofold: it gives the fans a glimpse of the types of organizations with which CONSOL partners, and it also provides the people who dedicate themselves to these organizations, an opportunity to be recognized in a very big way.” “CONSOL Energy produces the coal and natural gas that power America, but it’s the energy of regular people doing great things that make our communities a better place,” Ziemba says. Organizations being honored this hockey season include:

• The Challenge Program, an incentive based achievement organization that rewards students at nearly 100 regional high schools for academic excellence, academic improvement, community service, and attendance

• The Washington (PA) City Mission, a homeless rehabilitation shelter that provides food, clothing, and shelter to the homeless and those in need of help

• St. Ann’s Catholic Church of Greene County, PA, serving local residents through its soup kitchen

• Franklin Township Fire Department of Franklin, PA

• Boy Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council

• Cecil Township (PA) Police Department

• Cameron Emergency Medical Services of Marshall County, WV

Ziemba says, “We’ll be honoring even more recipients the second half of the season — watch for us on the scoreboard!”

PENGUINS TRADE HELMETS FOR SANTA HATS AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

When the Penguins delivered Christmas presents to patients at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, Marc-Andre Fleury’s eyes lit up when he spotted a certain gift on his group’s cart: a mini goal, stick and ball set. So when Fleury and his teammates reached the room of the intended recipient, a young patient named Stevie, captain Sidney Crosby – whose jersey Stevie wore – did the honors of assembling the net before the goalie and his little buddy took to the floor and started playing, with ‘Flower’ grinning, “I got to show them how it’s done.” Fleury tended the tiny net while Stevie tried to score. And every time he managed to slip one past his famous friend, the sound of pure joy and laughter escaping from his lips would put a smile on even the Grinch’s face. It’s moments like those that signify just how important this annual visit is to the players, a tradition the team has upheld since the 1970s. “It means a lot to us. I think we get a little more out of it then they do,” forward Steve MacIntyre said. “It puts a lot of things into perspective.

I think “ every guy is

I think all the guys are all big kids at heart and I think for a few of us, it really hits home. A few of us have kids. “It’s pretty cool that we can be able to come and maybe brighten these kids’ days by just saying hello and spending some time with them.” Forward Chris Kunitz, who has two young children, agreed ~Sidney Crosby wholeheartedly. They can’t even begin to fathom what these amazing kids have to battle through on a daily basis, but hope that their visit helps serve as a welcome distraction for at least a little while. “It’s a tough thing to come and see families and what they’re going through,” Kunitz said. “But if you can take their mind off some situations that they’re going through, it brightens everybody’s day. You can’t take their pain away, but maybe you can take away some of things they’re worried about for a few minutes.” “This is a big one for us,” forward Craig Adams added. “We feel like you can at least maybe make someone’s day better. Sometimes in a hospital, that can be a big thing. I think it’s probably one of our favorite events, for sure.” The Penguins embodied the giving nature of the holidays by raising the funds to purchase all of the toys the children received on their annual visit. During their visit, the players — wearing Santa hats tipped at jaunty angles — split up into groups in order to visit as many children as possible.

happy to come here and do this.

Penguins players made surprise visits for patients, which was a present in itself.

They chatted with the patients and their families and took photos, signed autographs and distributed gifts. “I think every guy is happy to come here and do this,” Crosby said. “We realize that it can’t be easy times with what these kids are going through, especially at this time of year. So hopefully we can just come in and put a smile on their face. It’s something everyone enjoys doing.” The players’ visits were total surprises to the patients, who said meeting the Penguins was a present in itself. “It was a very, very good gift,” said 18-year-old Rhyan. “I appreciate it a lot. It means a lot. It’s an honor that they came in and saw me. It’s very, very nice. Not too many people get to meet them. That’s actually what I wanted to do one day, is meet those guys. And I finally got to do it.” Not only did it help raise their spirits, but it also served as a bit of motivation and inspiration as the players visited many kids during the day that played hockey or dreamed of one day playing, like seven-year-old Javen. Javen hopes to start playing as soon as he can, so meeting his idols was a dream come true. His mother Mary was grateful for their visit, because she felt it shows her son what he can achieve in his life. “I think that it brightens their spirits,” Mary said. “I think that when they see what someone can achieve in their lifetime, that might be an example to them that someday. I think that it brightens and gives them motivation. It was a really nice thing that they did and I’m really happy about that. We do watch hockey a lot, so we are very familiar with the Penguins. So it’s really neat that we got to do that.” Sam Kasan and Kaitlin Zurawsky contributed to this report.

ICE SHOWS, MONSTER JAM, FMX DRAMA OPEN 2012 AT CONSOL ENERGY CENTER

Entertainment ranging from the spine-tingling to the enchanting — each with its own form of artistry, music and excitement — will glide and slide, jump, bounce and dance through CONSOL Energy Center this winter and spring. Early 2012 brings perennial favorites that have become traditions for Pittsburgh audiences including: • Sesame Street Live’s “Elmo’s Super Heroes” • Nuclear Cowboyz 2012 • Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam® • Disney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic • Stars on Ice For an inside peek of what’s in store for audiences, Show Time spoke with Micky Dymond, stunt choreographer for Nuclear Cowboyz®, John Seasock, a Monster Jam driver, and Jacob Marsh, a skater with Disney on Ice. Dymond, himself a two-time AMA Motocross Lites class National Champion recalls that Nuclear Cowboyz’ opening performances in its first and second seasons were in Pittsburgh, and he says that he looks forward to coming back to an audience that has an appreciation for the skill and Sesame Street Live’s “Elmo’s Super Heroes” risk involved in the show’s stunts. Billed as the world’s greatest freestyle motocross riders in a futuristic theatrical tale, this year’s Nuclear Cowboyz production tells the story of the Soldiers of Havoc and the Metal Mulisha, FMX tribes battling against a new villain, The Tempest and her Cyborg Army. “We’ve added a snow mobile that jumps the center ramp and does a back flip,” Dymond says. It joins the band Nuclear Cowboyz 2012 of freestyle, trials and quad daredevils performing gravity defying stunts combined with pyrotechnic and laser displays. continued on page 53

“The action on the floor is exciting and every jump — especially in groups — is intense,” according to Dymond who says, “As an audience member, your participation is like work. You’re going to be drained when you leave.” For a change of pace, Disney on Ice celebrates 100 ~John Seasock Years of Magic brings to life 65 characters from 18 favorite Disney stories. Jacob Marsh, a member of the ensemble for the ice show says, “When you see everyone smiling and laughing and clapping their hands and when you can look into their eyes, it gets you pumped up to see everyone enjoying themselves.” As an ensemble skater, Marsh portrays one of 21 genies popping onto the Advance Auto Parts ice to perform chorus line style Monster Jam® in the Aladdin number, a toy soldier in a squad performing intricate maneuvers in the Toy Story segment, and Mexico in the It’s a Small World scene. Then there’s Pennsylvania native, John Seasock, a Monster Jam champion driver and 2-time World Disney on Ice Racing Champion. Celebrates 100 Years of Magic He raced in CONSOL Energy Center for the first time last year and remembers winning that night’s contest after a young boy gave him a Terrible Towel which he kept in his truck for luck.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Pittsburgh and rocking the house for all the great Pennsylvania fans,” says Seasock. To rock in Monster Jam, it helps to have a truck like Seasock’s 1500-horsepower Advance Auto Parts Grinder. It can jump 30 to 40 feet high. Its body, a work of art, according to Seasock, is a Ford Stars on Ice F-150 Super Cab, standing 12 feet high and 12 feet wide, and weighing 10,000 pounds. “I encourage people to come to see a Monster Jam. It will hook them,” Seasock says. At CONSOL Energy Center, he notes, “We (drivers) can hear the fans.” Echoing Marsh and Dymond, Seasock says, “The best part about the show is the fans. We feed off of them and their excitement.”
