THE SERIES
JAN. 27, 2013

The Penguins and Ottawa Senators meet here tonight for the second time this season. In Canada’s capital back on Jan. 27, James Neal, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin all scored in the shootout to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory over the Senators. It was just the second time in Penguins’ history they went three-for-three in a shootout, matching the feat accomplished by Erik Christensen, Petr Sykora and Crosby here against Carolina on Oct. 19, 2007. . . Neal also had a goal in regulation in the win over Ottawa last month, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves. . . That victory snapped a threegame losing streak against the Senators. . . Pittsburgh is 5-4-0 in its last nine games against Ottawa and has outshot the Senators in seven
consecutive games. . . The Penguins’ power play has gone 0-for-10 over the last three games against Ottawa. . . Pittsburgh is 4-2-0 in its last six home games against the Senators, although Ottawa won its last game here, a 5-1 victory Jan. 10 last season in which Milan Michalek scored twice and Colin Greening set up three goals. Greening also had the Senators’ lone goal in the Jan. 27 game. . . The Penguins have had a lot of success against the Ottawa power play here in Pittsburgh lately, killing 30 of the last 32 penalties against the Senators. . . The Senators have scored first in each of their last three visits here, although the Penguins have rallied to win two of those continued on page 8

games. . . Jason Spezza, who averages 1.27 points per game in his career against the Penguins, is out after having back surgery . . . Daniel Alfredsson, however, has been healthy and has a healthy scoring history against Pittsburgh. The NHL’s current longest-serving captain has 22 goals and 62 points in 62 career games against the Penguins. He was under the weather and missed the Jan. 27 game. . . Pittsburgh is 43-29-9-2 all-time against Ottawa, including 22-13-4-2 at home. . . The teams’ next meeting is April 22 in Ottawa, as this is the Senators’ only visit to Pittsburgh this season.

Tonight marks the first time this season the Penguins have played consecutive games at home. Pittsburgh completed a home-and-home series against New Jersey here Sunday night. The Penguins travel to Winnipeg on Friday and visit Buffalo on Sunday afternoon before returning home to host Philadelphia on Feb. 20. . . Chris Kunitz became just the fifth Penguins player to record four goals in a road game Feb. 3 at Washington, joining Mario Lemieux (six times), Kevin Stevens (twice), Joe Mullen and Randy Cunneyworth. Kunitz also became just the second Pittsburgh player to record four goals in a game while taking just four shots; Lemieux did the same for his first NHL hat trick in St. Louis on Dec. 31, 1985. . . won on Long Island on Feb. 5, 4-2, it gave them a 6-1 record on the road this season and the secondbest road start in team history. The 2009-10 Penguins began the season by winning each of their first seven road games. . . The win over the Islanders was their fourth straight and fifth in six games, and it left them first overall in the Eastern Conference and third in the NHL’s overall standings at 7-3-0 through the first 10 games. . . James Neal entered last Thursday’s game here against Washington with all seven of his points this season (6+1) on the road . . . Paul Martin entered that game against the Capitals having gone 26 consecutive regular-season games without a penalty. . . After Simon Despres scored in the win over the Islanders, Pittsburgh defensemen had accounted for five goals in three games.

THE SENATORS Ottawa snapped a two-game losing streak Feb. 5 with a 4-3 home victory over Buffalo, as Alfredsson, Erik Karlsson, Chris Phillips and Chris Neil had goals and Peter Regin chipped in two assists. It also marked what could be considered the “worst” game of the season for goaltender Craig Anderson — he allowed more than two goals in a game for the first time this season and, incredibly, allowed a goal after the first period for the first time in nine starts this season. . . The Senators concluded a four-game homestand last night against the Sabres, and tonight marks the start of a three-game road trip that includes games in Toronto on Saturday and New Jersey next Monday. . . Ottawa brings a threegame road losing streak into this game. . . Senators’ defenseman ERIK KARLSSON Mike Lundin (thumb) is out.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS INTRODUCE THE 2012 CONTINUING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS By: Caitlyn Lizik
In May 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins awarded three City of Pittsburgh high school seniors with higher education scholarships on the basis of academic achievement, community service, and participation in school activities. Each scholarship was valued at $1,500. The three recipients of the 2012 Pittsburgh Penguins Continuing Education Scholarships were Jacqueline Clarke of the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, Sara Zahorchak of Pittsburgh Brashear and Cory Hanlon of Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts High School (CAPA). Jacqueline Clarke was captain of the cheerleading squad, maintained high honor roll throughout her high school career, and was a member of the Senior Cabinet for the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies. She was also an active member of the National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America. Her community involvement included volunteering at Lott Carey Foreign Missions, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church, Center for Healthy Hearts and Souls, and Red Door. Her commitment to these organizations strengthened her love for service, community involvement and passion for teaching. She is currently a member of the Freshman Leadership Academy at Howard University where she is majoring in history with a minor in secondary education. Sara Zahorchak was a member of the National Honor Society, captain of her tennis team, and a member of the Centers for Advanced Studies (CAS) Program at Pittsburgh Brashear for continued on page 22

academically gifted students. She was also a former recruit for the Pittsburgh Promise, and joined the C.H.A.N.G.E.S organization her senior year of high school where she worked with the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and World Vision which benefits poverty-stricken communities around the world. Sara also participated in a variety of local community initiatives such as Market Day, Meals-On-Wheels and the Brookline Christian Food Bank. In addition, she planned a community project that engaged her graduating class in the renovation of a World War I memorial in her neighborhood of Brookline. As a student at the University of Pittsburgh, Sara is a civil engineering major with an environmental concentration and member of The Society of Women Engineers. Throughout high school, Cory Hanlon was an active member of the National Honor Society, maintained high honors and was a member of the wrestling team for Carrick High School. A guitar major at CAPA, he organized and performed in a benefit concert that helped raise $5,000 for the Haiti earthquake survivors. In addition to his academic achievements, Cory devoted himself to raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through an annual neighborhood drive. He also assisted the North Elkin Road Cleanup with regional road and stream cleanups in Indiana County and mentored youth regarding nature and its inhabitants at the 18th Annual Youth Field Day in Blair County. Cory attended SeJong Tae Kwon Do classes and volunteered at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. His experiences at the hospital inspired him to work towards a future career in health care. He is presently a nursing major, member of the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania, Assistant Director for the Campus Activities Board, and teaches self-defense classes at Carlow University.

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta
A GRAND NIGHT: Milan Hejduk has become the second player in Quebec/Colorado franchise history to play in 1,000 career regularseason games and the first to do so entirely in an Avalanche jersey. Hejduk’s odometer hit four figures in a 3-2 loss to Dallas on Feb. 4. Hejduk joined Joe Sakic (508 GP with Quebec, 870 with Colorado) in the franchise’s 1,000 games club and became the 30th player in NHL history to reach that plateau while spending his entire career with one franchise. Of those 30 nine are still active: Hejduk, Shane Doan (Phoenix), Martin Brodeur (New Jersey), Jarome Iginla (Calgary), Daniel Alfredsson (Ottawa), Patrick Marleau (San Jose), Patrik Elias (New Jersey), Chris Phillips (Ottawa) and Vincent Lecavalier (Tampa Bay). Hejduk scored a goal in his 1,000th game, his first of the season, and moved to within two points of becoming the fourth player in Quebec/Colorado franchise history to reach the 800 mark. Hejduk was Milan Hejduk attempting to join Sakic (1,641), Peter Stastny (1,048) and Michel Goulet (945) in that fraternity. Hejduk was also trying to become the third Czech player to amass 800 points, after Jaromir Jagr (1,658) and Elias (901).
AN HISTORIC NIGHT: Antoine Roussel of Dallas became the eighth French-born player to appear in an NHL game when he made his debut on Feb. 4. Roussel followed countrymen Philippe Bozon, Stephane De Costa, Pat Daley, Cristobal Huet, Paul MacLean, Andre Peloffy and Max Sauve into the league. A RARE NIGHT: Boston led Buffalo 3-1 on Jan. 31 before eventually losing, 7-4. In doing so the Bruins dropped a game in which they had enjoyed a two-goal lead for the first time since April 4, 2011.
A MEMORABLE NIGHT: Johan Hedberg’s 3-0 shutout of the Islanders on Feb. 3 was his eighth with the Devils, the most for any New Jersey goaltender not named Brodeur, and the 22nd of Hedberg’s career.

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Botterill, a native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, was a firstround draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING
BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:8.5”
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area.
2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the
puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.
3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play.
4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-
mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.
6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.
STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.
2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA
Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
HEADS UP PITTSBURGH
KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE
In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. ABOUT A BOY(CHUK) By: Wes Crosby
In a two-week span, forward Zach Boychuk went from skating on the Carolina Hurricanes’ top line alongside NHL stars Eric Staal and Alexander Semin for one game, to being placed on waivers while on his way back to the American Hockey League, to playing on a line with reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin and 40-goal scorer James Neal. What a whirlwind. But the 14th-overall pick of the 2008 NHL Draft is using the change of scenery as a chance to finally showcase his skill-set. “I think it’s something that I needed and it’s nice to get a change,” Boychuk said. “For me, I want to be a full-time NHL player and I feel like I have the skills to do that and now that Pittsburgh has given me the opportunity, I hope to take advantage of it.” Penguins general manager Ray Shero called the 23-year-old forward to inform him the Penguins had acquired him from the waiver wire. “He just said that he likes what I bring to the team. He said I have to play my game,” Boychuk said. Boychuk spent four full seasons in the Carolina organization, bouncing back-and-forth between the Hurricanes and the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. In 178 AHL games, he put up 146 points, 58 goals and 88 assists. continued on page 113

Boychuk was never able to catch on in Carolina, but it is not because of a lack of talent. On the contrary, Carolina head coach Kirk Muller said the reason Boychuk was on his way back to Charlotte is that he has the skill-set of a top-three line NHL player and Muller couldn’t find a spot for that type of player on Carolina’s roster. “I talked to Muller right before I got put on waivers and he said it was a different circumstance for him because normally when a guy is put on waivers he doesn’t perform very well or there’s part of his game that you don’t really like,” Boychuk said. “But for him, he said he didn’t have to go through that with me. “It was basically that the training camp was cut short and the one game he didn’t get to see enough of me and after that he was just trying to fit me into the group of 12 forwards and he didn’t want to put me on the fourth line.” Now, Boychuk has a chance to display that skill set, bring some grit to one of the league’s most prominent lines and teams. “This year I played with Staal and Semin in my first game and those guys are great players. I feel like I can bring tenacity to those types of ZACH BOYCHUK players,” Boychuk said. “I have speed, I can go and get pucks and I can make plays so it’s great to come to a team with superstars like that and hopefully I can bring something good to the team.” Prior to joining the team, Boychuk had limited experience dealing with the Penguins, netting two goals in three career games against

Pittsburgh. In fact, Boychuk might have gained more knowledge about the team from watching television than he did while on the ice. “I watched them all the ~ Zach Boychuk time, they’re always on TV,” Boychuk said. “They have a lot of superstars and obviously they won a Cup a couple of years ago, so it’s always been a team where, when you’re playing against them, it’s always a tough game — and watching the [HBO] 24/7 series and seeing the dressing room, it’s all pretty cool and it’s great that I’m here right now.” While he might take some time to adjust to his new surroundings, Boychuk said his prior relationship with former- and now currentteammate Brandon Sutter has helped him through the process. The Hurricanes used back-to-back first-round picks to take Sutter in 2007 and Boychuk in 2008. Before playing with each other in Carolina, they played in Under-17, Under-18 and World Junior Championships together. “It’s good to have a familiar face like that,” Boychuk said. “I stayed at his house in Carolina and it looks like he has an extra room right now for me too, so I’ll stay with him for a while.” Sutter, who is also in his first season with the Penguins, was confident that Boychuk will have no problem fitting in Pittsburgh, characterizing him as “a jokester” who is “very laid back and easy going.” “It’s tough to come into a new place. I had to go through it a few months ago,” Sutter said. “I know my way around a little bit, so I’ll do my best to show him where to go.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PensFIT
In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
PENGUINS
Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY
Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS
SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.
DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

YOUTH HOCKEY UPDATE
PIHL ALL-STAR TEAMS SELECTED
Anthony Franks and Joe Sager
By Brian Zagorac
With the recent string of Pittsburgh-born players making names for themselves in the World Junior Championships, as well as the National Hockey League, college hockey programs and junior teams look for the next wave of talent to come from Western Pennsylvania. These clubs will get a first-hand look at potential players as they take the ice for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League All-Star game in early February. Out of the four divisions (AAA, AA, A, Open), as many as 55 high schools will be represented at the showcase, with teams spanning from Morgantown to State College to Erie Cathedral Prep. Freeport leads the PIHL in selections with six-the only school in the four divisions with more than five. Numerous teams finished a close second to Freeport. PineRichland, West Allegheny, Chartiers Valley, Quaker Valley, Westmont Hilltop, Mars, and Bethel Park all will have five players representing their respective schools. The games are sure to be packed with offense, as 20 players throughout the four divisions have scored 50 points or more in less than 20 games. Some highlights include Hollidaysburg forward William Power, who has

recorded 75 points in just 15 games (43+32) while playing in the Open Division. His Hollidaysburg teammate and defenseman Brandon Ritchey is not far behind, scoring 29 goals and 37 assists for a total of 66 points. In the Single-A game, another set of teammates leads the way on offense. Kittanning standouts Hunter Grafton and Christian Miller look to provide the scoring punch for the Northeast Conference squad. Grafton (71 points) and Miller (68 points) are first and second, respectively, in the Single-A division scoring race. The dynamic duo of Chartiers Valley forwards Anthony Franks and Cullen McMahon look to continue their regular season success together in the Double-A game. Franks (52 points) and McMahon (50) are 1-2 on the scoring leaderboard in Double-A and the only players to reach the 50-point mark thus far. In the Triple-A division, two players who have been battling each other all year for the goal scoring lead will become teammates for the Northeast Conference. State College’s Stefan Horgas (36 goals) and Norwin’s Daniel Merz (34 goals) will go from division rivals to linemates, hoping to create the same goal scoring opportunities together as they do when facing off against each other during the regular season. The four games will be a great exhibition of the current talent pool in Western Pennsylvania high school hockey and a chance for exceptional student-athletes to proudly represent themselves and their schools.

PENS PROFILE
BRANDON SUTTER By: Mark Madden
Brandon Sutter struggled statistically in his salad days with the Penguins: Just one assist in his first seven games. But in those seven games, Sutter was not on the ice for a 5-on-5 goal against. He extended that streak to eight games in the Penguins’ 5-1 home victory against New Jersey on Feb. 2, notching his first goal of the season in the process. He absorbed a minus the next day, but that didn’t detract from the team’s 6-3 win at Washington. Sutter dished an assist, his second point in as many days. That’s what a good third-line center does: He doesn’t get scored on. Jordan Staal — the man the Penguins traded for Sutter — left a tough act to follow as center of the Penguins’ third line. But the 6-foot-3, 183-pound Sutter is finding his groove.
200
His two-way excellence duly noted, Sutter’s first goal as a Penguin sure felt good. Sutter and Sidney Crosby both jammed the net, with Sutter’s stick nudging the puck over legendary Devils goalie Martin Brodeur for the game’s opening tally at 2:27 of the second period. “I had a good chance in the first period and somehow, it stayed out,” Sutter said. “But I had another chance to get one, and it feels good to get the monkey off my back. “I’m really not too sure [how the puck went in]. The puck came out and I shot a few off his pads. Then I managed to bump another one and it squeaked in.” Sutter had 17 goals and 15 assists for the Carolina Hurricanes last season. Entering the current campaign, he had 53 goals and 54 assists in 286 NHL games. The victory over New Jersey was the Penguins’ first at home this season after disappointing losses to Toronto and the New York Islanders. continued on page 203

“We needed it,” said Sutter, 23. “We played really well. That’s how we want to play. We did really well defensively, and we got great goaltending. We’ve been talking about our defensive play the last few games, and we’ve been much better at it. It’s a good win for the team. “It was probably our best overall game so far. We didn’t give up anything. They had a couple of chances, but when they did [Marc-Andre Fleury] made good saves.” Coach Dan Bylsma juggled his lines in the season’s early going. But by the Devils game, he’d gone back to his preferred third line: The reliable trio of Sutter, Tyler Kennedy and Matt Cooke. “We’ve been on and off the same line, back and forth,” Sutter noted. “But [rhythm together] is starting to come. We got some more chances coming out of the corners and on the forecheck. So it’s certainly feeling more comfortable and we’re getting better every game.” Sutter is also a mainstay of the Penguins’ penalty-kill. The team’s PK ranked third in the NHL last season with a success rate of 87.8 percent. After nine games this season, it ranked 12th in the league with a mark of 81.1. “It’s something that’s important, and it’s been important to this team for a few years,” said the native of Red Deer, Alberta. “They’ve been one of the better teams at it. “We are working better, but we need to get even better. If we stay strong [on the PK], I think our power play’s skilled enough to win the special-teams battle every night.” Sutter is the son of a coach who was also a skilled, smart, accomplished hockey player: Brent Sutter, a standout center with the Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks who won two Stanley Cups and three Canada Cups. Brent coached Brandon with Red Deer of the Jr. A Western Hockey League. Brandon embraces his defensive responsibilities. But, he says, “The key is to find that two-way game. Lots of times we play against some of their better players. So it’s your job to keep everything out of your net. But we want to create offensively, too. We’re going to keep trying to forecheck and create things in their end.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENGUINS ICE HOCKEY By: Mike Prisuta
They scored goals against the Rangers, defended against the Senators, didn’t do enough of either against the Islanders and did both at a dominating level against the Devils. For the Penguins, such fluctuations were reflective of the transition they’ve been trying to make while attempting to navigate a condensed schedule in a jump-started season. They recognize and accept that transition isn’t going to happen overnight. “We’re a long way from where we need to be as a team to be at our best,” head coach Dan Bylsma announced amid a rare lull in the early going. “So yeah, we’re developing.” What they’re after specifically is the honing of individual components of their game that, when blended together on a consistent basis, are expected to glean results. Among those are executing with and managing the puck, staying on the good [defensive] side of the puck and sticking with what Bylsma refers to as “our mentality,” as opposed to succumbing to frustration. Playing well with leads and in third periods and getting timely DAN BYLSMA contributions from the power-play and penalty-killing units are also aspects of what Bylsma envisions as “Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey.” And those, too, figure to loom large on a daily or nightly basis. continued on page 218

Big-picture wise the Penguins are trying to move toward a morestructured game and move away from run-and-gun exhibitions that, while more spectacular, are less predictable and manageable. The way last season ended has everything to do with the changes the team was attempting to implement as this season began. “We’re still finding exactly what our best game looks like and what we need to play like versus a team that had the most goals for in the last 20 games last year and also had a very high goals-against [average],” Bylsma said after seven games this season. He characterized the Penguins of last spring as a “good team,” but also as “not necessarily a team that did well in the playoffs with that [more offensive] mentality.” When they get to where Bylsma eventually wants them to be this season the Penguins will be a much more balanced team. That starts in the defensive end and with the adoption of more of a more defensive mindset. A significant amount of what they’re after was evident in a 3-0 shutout of the Rangers on Jan. 31 at Madison Square Garden. That was a performance that included aspects of a grand design that’s destined to pay dividends provided such aspects can become habit forming. “We had guys stay on the defensive side of

the puck in our own zone instead of leaving the zone looking for chances,” winger Matt Cooke assessed. “We’re a skilledenough team offensively that we’re going to get our chances; it’s taking care of our own end [that’s the new No. 1 objective].” That’s not just a third-line thing this season. “It’s more of [being] content in your own skin,” Cooke continued. “You’re able to play the right way. MATT COOKE You’re able to make sure you defend first and trust that you’re going to get your chances to score goals. “The emphasis has always been to score goals. With that change, with that mindset alteration, you’re looking at a situation where we have to expect there’s going to be a level of frustration in that growing process.” That frustration was evident on a couple of occasions in the early going, most noticeably throughout and after a lackluster, 4-1 loss to the Islanders on Jan. 29 at CONSOL Energy Center. The winning streak that ensued suggested that, while not there yet, the Penguins are getting their heads and hands around their new approach. “It’s not ‘defense oriented,’ it’s just ‘defense first,’” Cooke said. “We want to make sure we take care of our own end. It’s something we want to be proud of. And there is a lot that goes into that, blocking shots and staying on the right side of the puck.” This season it’s about a lot more than offensive-zone time and puck possession and playing defense by playing offense. The Penguins are evolving beyond that willingly and out of necessity. “Part of last year is, when we got to a key point in the season when we were pressed [to play well defensively] we couldn’t really handle it because we hadn’t had to play that way yet,” Cooke said. “Everyone realizes and recognizes what happened last year. “We’re trying to move forward.”
