GAME NOTES By: Bob Grove
THE SERIES The Penguins and New York Islanders meet here tonight at CONSOL Energy Center in the fifth and final game between the teams in this regular season. The Penguins have won three straight games against New York after dropping the first meeting with the Islanders here on Jan. 29. In that 4-1 victory, the Islanders scored three second-period goals in the span of 10:29 and went two-for-two on the power play as former Penguins’ draft pick Matt Moulson had one goal and one assist while Frans Nielsen had two assists. . . When the teams met again on Long Island on Feb. 5, goals by James Neal, Simon Despres and Brandon Sutter built a 3-0 lead early in the third period for the Penguins as they went on to a 4-2 victory while stopping all seven Islanders’ power plays. . . The teams came back to Pittsburgh on March 10, when Chris Kunitz delivered a hat trick and the first five-point game of his career in a 6-1 victory. Sidney Crosby added five assists and Pascal Dupuis two goals as Pittsburgh’s top line accumulated 12 points in all. . . The most recent game between the teams was March 22 on Long Island, where the Islanders outshot the Penguins, 14-3, in the opening 20 minutes and built a 1-0 lead. But the Penguins got second-period goals from Joe Vitale and Kunitz, the latter in the final seconds of the period, to tie the game before Brandon Sutter scored early in the third on the way to a 4-2 victory. . . Pittsburgh has thus outscored the continued on page 8

Islanders, 14-5, in the last three games between the teams. . . Sidney Crosby has 55 assists and 75 points in his career against New York, both his highest totals against one team. . . Neither Crosby (14 shots) nor Evgeni Malkin (19 shots) has ever scored a goal against Islanders’ goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. . . Pittsburgh is 106-92-28 all-time against New York, including a 60-38-16 edge at home.
THE PENGUINS Today’s game is the fourth in the Penguins’ five-game homestand, which ends Tuesday against Buffalo. The homestand began with a 2-1 overtime victory over Philadelphia on March 24, which ran Pittsburgh’s winning streak to 12 games, matching the secondlongest in team history. The Penguins hosted Montreal this past Tuesday and Winnipeg on Thursday. . . The winning streak at that point was the longest in the NHL this season, as Chicago had won 11 straight games earlier. The Penguins have the NHL record at 17 consecutive victories in the 1992-93 season. . . Pittsburgh will play seven of its final 11 games on the road. . . Pittsburgh also took a nine-game home winning streak into the meeting with Montreal . . . Forward Brendan Morrow made his Penguins’ debut against the Canadiens after being acquired from Dallas with a third-round 2013 pick for defenseman Joe Morrow and a fifth-round 2013 pick March 24. Morrow, 34, was Dallas’ captain. . . The following day, the Penguins sent a pair of second-round draft picks to San Jose for veteran defenseman Douglas Murray, who was expected to play his first game for Pittsburgh against Winnipeg. . . THE ISLANDERS This game is the third on a four-game road trip for the Islanders, who will play in New Jersey on Monday night. They played in Philadelphia on Thursday night after starting the trip in Washington this past Tuesday. . . New York plays 11 of its final 16 games on the road. . . The Islanders were 11th in the Eastern Conference, two points out of the final playoff position, when this week began. . . New York snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 home victory over Florida on March 24, as Nabokov had 26 saves for his third shutout of the season. It was just the sixth home victory of the season for New York. . . The Islanders have been much better on the road, where they were 4-1-0 in their last five before playing in Washington to start this trip and 8-4-1 overall. . . John Tavares had 19 goals and 34 points in his first 32 games, leaving him eighth in the NHL scoring race at that point. Moulson was right behind him with 11 goals and 33 points. . . Former Penguin Brian Strait is out of the New York lineup with a fractured ankle.

The First Ever ES Hybrid. 40 MPG EPA-Estimated.* At first glance, it’s a bold statement of style. Read between the lines, however, and you’ll discover that the first ever ES Hybrid doesn’t merely make a statement, it backs it up. Take, for instance, the sleek, sculpted appearance. It’s not just for show—the aerodynamic design boosts fuel efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 40 MPG.* And while the hand-stitched panels and precision-crafted interior make a stunning first impression, the available next-generation technologies in connectivity elevate the conversation. Ultimately, the 2013 ES Hybrid not only sends a message—it’s sure to build a following.

COMMUNITY UPDATE
IT PAYS TO PLAY THE PENGUINS FOUNDATION 50/50 RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation are delighted to help local charities raise funds through the Penguins Foundation 50/50 RAFFLE. On March 10, the Penguins Foundation began to offer a 50/50 RAFFLE at all Penguins home games and one lucky fan is selected as the winner of 50% of the collected amount for that game! The remaining balance will be directed to the participating charity. A different charity is selected to participate at each game, but all charities share the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s vision to promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education, and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through hockey and other activities. Tickets are sold at the following rates: three for $5, seven for $10, and 15 for $20. Penguins fans have been quick to embrace the Penguins Foundation 50/50 RAFFLE and it really does pay to play! In the 50/50 RAFFLE’s first five games, a total of $161,555, or an average of over $32,300 each game, was collected. It is a great way for Penguins fans to help a local charity and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, while also testing their luck for a big prize. continued on page 22

Please look for the Penguins Foundation’s distinctive 50/50 RAFFLE kiosks and roaming sellers around the CONSOL Energy Center. Charity volunteers wearing bright green aprons can be found at CONSOL Energy Center main entrances and at kiosks on each concourse. Tickets are sold from the time gates open until the end of the 2nd intermission. One winning 50/50 RAFFLE ticket will be randomly drawn by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation utilizing an automated computer program during the second timeout of the 3rd period during each Pittsburgh Penguins home game. After the ticket is selected, it will be announced during the game and the winners’ list will be posted on the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation website — pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org. The winner does not need to be present to claim his/her prize.

AROUND THE NHL By Mike Prisuta
FOUR OF A KIND: Having their four core players in the lineup at the same time proved to be worth the wait initially for the Washington Capitals. Washington got forwards Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Brooks Laich and defenseman Mike Green dressed together for the first time on March 21 at Winnipeg. The Caps won that one and the next two such games, and in the first three games featuring their fearsome foursome outscored the opposition 12-3, scored on three of 10 power-play opportunities and killed nine of 10 short-handed situations. Ovechkin, Backstrom, Laich and Green combined for eight goals and seven assists in their first three games together.
ISLANDERS’ MAGIC NUMBER: The Islander’s first 32 games saw them post a record of 13-2-2 when scoring three or more goals and 1-13-1 when managing two or fewer.
MAN-DOWN PROWESS: Toronto killed over 90 percent of opposition power plays over a 23-game stretch (65 of 71, 91.5 percent) that pushed the Maple Leafs into the top five in the NHL in penalty killing (fifth, 85.4 percent) overall this season.
GREAT RESUME: Carolina summoned goaltender John Muse from the AHL for his first NHL assignment on Tuesday. Prior to playing in the AHL Muse had backstopped his teams to an ECHL Kelly Cup championship (Florida Everblades, 2012) and a pair of NCAA championships (Boston College, 2008 and 2010). TOUGH TO STOP: Winnipeg’s Andrew Ladd, the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz and Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis opened this week as the only players not to have played consecutive games without scoring a point this season. Giroux took 796 face-offs, 42.2 percent of Philadelphia’s face-offs, through 31 games. Both figures led the NHL.

IN THEIR FACE: The Flyers’ Claude
SECOND-TO-LAST HAT: Florida’s Claude Giroux Peter Muller scored with 9.8 second left in the second period on March 23, the third time this season he had found the net with less than 10 seconds left in a second period. 24

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER/CHAIRMAN
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 14th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including six straight playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. The Penguins entered the 2012-13 season having sold out 254 straight games while setting new standards for local television ratings, merchandise sales, website traffic and social media. Lemieux and Burkle were driving forces in the quest for a new multi-purpose arena for Pittsburgh and were proud to open CONSOL Energy Center in August, 2010. The sparkling facility is rated one of the top facilities in North America and hosted such national events as the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Second and Third Rounds and the 2012 NHL Draft. Known as “Le Magnifique,” Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranks eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. The Penguins ownership group, local labor organizations and members of the Pittsburgh business community honored Lemieux in 2012 with a statue to commemorate his career and contributions to the city and the region. Appropriately named “Le Magnifique,” the statue, by nationally-acclaimed sculptor Bruce Wolfe, can be seen outside of the Trib Total Media gate at CONSOL Energy Center. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 14th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh — including the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, coming in April, 2013. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons and consistently rank among the most fan-friendly and community-minded teams in the NHL and all of pro sports. The Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in ‘09. The team’s solid foundation of ownership has enabled hockey management to spend to the salary cap, sign many of the team’s young core players to long-term contracts and put a competitive team on the ice year after year — leading to six straight playoff berths. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award.

DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse has established himself as one of the most dynamic senior executives in the National Hockey League. Since being named President of the Penguins in April, 2007, Morehouse has reshaped the team’s image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010, and oversees every aspect of the Penguins’ operations, reporting directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. Under Morehouse’s leadership, the Penguins quickly developed a new commitment to innovative fan outreach — including an annual event where players personally deliver season tickets to fans’ homes and a special preseason game where all 18,000 tickets are distributed free to local youth. His emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.-based NHL and NBA teams in local television ratings during the 2011-12 season. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of Morehouse’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids aged 5-7 each year. The Penguins have sold out every game for five-plus seasons, a streak that had reached 254 games before the start of the 2012-13 season. They also have sold out all suites for four-plus seasons and actually increased capacity at CONSOL Energy Center by 300 seats (to 18,387) after the arena’s inaugural season in 2010-11. Morehouse himself was named 2011 CEO Communicator of the Year by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Morehouse attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Shero’s efforts have secured the Penguins’ long-term stability and competitiveness with his masterful maneuvering of the salary cap — the Penguins ranked No. 3 out of 122 pro sports franchises in spending efficiency according to Bloomberg Business Week — and multi-year signings of the team’s core players: Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, and James Neal. Shero’s riskiest and boldest move paid off with hockey’s highest prize. With the Penguins needing a jolt of life late in the 2008-09 season, he promoted Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Dan Bylsma to Pittsburgh. Bylsma led a turnaround that resulted in a championship in ’09. Bylsma also won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s “Most Outstanding Coach” in ’11. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred won back-to-back Stanley Cups as head coach of the Flyers in 1974 and ’75 and also served as general manager of the Rangers for three years (1978-80), leading the club to the Stanley Cup Final in 1979. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Shero is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 36, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Botterill, a native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, was a firstround draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. RULES OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY
BOARDING
BOARDING To check or push a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact into the boards dangerously or violently.
T:8.5”
B:8.75”
S:8.5”
-
The player applying the check needs to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, must avoid contact.
-
The player with the puck needs to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and defenseless position.
-
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing” or “off-sides” play that does not impact boards should be treated as “charging.”
DELAY OF GAME A player may be penalized when, in the opinion of the Referee, is delaying the game in any matter. (Normally six conditions) 1.) Player or goaltender intentionally shoots or throws the puck out
of the playing area.
2.) A defensive player or goaltender in the defensive zone shoots the
puck directly (without being deflected) over the glass.
3.) A player or goaltender intentionally knocks the net’s goalpost off
its moorings, which stops the play.
4.) The goaltender plays the puck out of the trapezoid behind the net. 5.) The goaltender freezes the puck rather than passing it to a team-
mate when no player on the opposing team is within sufficient distance to apply offensive pressure.
6.) Any skater other than the goaltender who uses their hands to
make the puck unplayable.

INTERFERENCE INTERFERENCE
BODY POSITION: Body position will be determined as the player skating in front of or beside his opponent, traveling in the same direction. - A player who is behind an opponent, who does not have the puck, may not use his stick, body or free hand in order to restrain his opponent. POSSESSION OF THE PUCK: The last player to touch the puck, other than the goaltenders, will be considered the player in possession. RESTRAIN: The actions of a player or goaltender who does not have body position, but instead uses illegal means to impede an opponent who is not in possession of the puck. PICK: The action of a player or goaltender who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. FREE HAND: When a free hand is used to hold, pull, tug, grab or physically restrain an opponent from moving freely, this must be penalized as holding.
STICK: A player who does not have body position on his opponent, who used his stick to impede or prevent his opponent from moving freely on the ice shall be assessed a hooking penalty.
OFF-SIDES Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone. (Two determining factors) 1.) One of a player’s skates is not in contact with or behind the blue
line of the attacking zone before the puck enters that zone.
2.) The puck must completely cross the edge of the blue line nearest
the attacking zone to be considered inside the attacking zone.
The act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player to restrain an opponent.
-
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-tostick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.

GET A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ARENA
Tickets for CONSOL Energy Center’s tours draw visitors of all ages and interests who want to see more of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home and the city’s newest, greenest entertainment facility. CONSOL Energy Center tours, presented by Bayer MaterialScience, walk visitors through areas of the building that fans might not get to see when they attend a game or other entertainment. For example, on the PNC Legends Level more than $1 million worth of artwork, done in collaboration with James Gallery of Pittsburgh, is on display. It includes large wall murals, 10 PNC Legendary Moments shadowboxes and photography featuring Pittsburgh Penguins players. Tours provide guests with an exclusive look at all seating levels of CONSOL Energy Center, as well as the First Niagara, Captain Morgan and Lexus clubs, a Canadian Party Suite, select locker rooms and more. Based on events taking place in the building, Suite 66 and the Visitor’s Hockey Locker Room are shown when available. These areas are of interest to many people but not ordinarily accessible to most visitors. One of the other features included in the tours is the centerpiece PensVision, measuring nearly 25’ wide and 15’ high and 70,000 pounds. With true High Definition resolution along with enhanced contrast and brightness, the screens redefine the arena video experience for Penguins fans. Just below the center-ice scoreboard there are two, 360 degree LED ribbon boards. These are a first of their kind in Pittsburgh. The scoreboard and LED ribbon boards combined cost a total of $8 million. Throughout CONSOL Energy Center there are over 800 flat-screen TVs. They are used to display messages to fans, keep fans in the game while away from

their seats along with displaying the menus at the concession stands throughout the arena. On the FedEx Level, just above the American Eagle Gate, sits the World’s Largest Goalie Mask. The idea of James Gallery, it was painted by renowned artist David Arrigo, who has painted masks for several NHL goaltenders. The display is presented by Bayer MaterialScience and features “The Science of Sport” kiosks showcasing the science behind sports including how a hockey puck moves on ice. The Goalie mask, which is 9.5 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet deep and weighs in between 700-800 lbs, features the celebration of fans and players after a goal is scored. The materials used to construct the mask are protected by a high-performance polyurethane coating containing raw materials produced by Bayer MaterialScience. This basecoat serves as the foundation for both the white background and the artist’s colors. A final polyurethane clearcoat over the artwork provides additional protection and durability. Also part of the tour is the Highmark Kid’s Zone — an interactive play area that offers both educational and recreational activities for children of all ages. The Highmark Kid’s Zone includes four Wii consoles, videos and trivia, faceoff and puck games, along with a replica of the famous Sidney Crosby dryer. Located further down the hall is the Highmark Wall of Champions. The Highmark Wall of Champions is two stories tall and contains the official jerseys of all PIHL (Pittsburgh Interscholastic Hockey League) teams, regional high schools as well as select other amateur teams in the region. “The tour highlights the environmentally friendly components of the building which qualified CONSOL Energy Center to become the first NHL Arena to receive LEED Gold Certification,” says David Peart, Vice President, Pittsburgh Penguins. “The tours allow us to highlight our continuing efforts toward improving the environment, which are detailed on 12 different plaques located throughout the building,” says Mr. Peart. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
HEADS UP PITTSBURGH
KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE
In 2012, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation expanded the HEADS UP Pittsburgh free baseline concussion testing program to include youth athletes ages 10-14 in all sports. Since the program started in 2011, over 3,400 youth hockey players have been tested along with 1,500 athletes representing 12 other sports. The program originally began with youth hockey players only. Testing took place at UPMC Sports Medicine on the South Side, as well as at four Community College of Allegheny County locations — Boyce, North, South and West Hills Center. “Our original youth hockey testing program in 2011 was a tremendous success because it touched thousands of young players and created increased awareness about concussion safety,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. “Based on our mission to actively promote physical well being among young people in the community, it was an easy decision to expand the program to other sports beyond hockey.” While athletes are being tested, their parents meet with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff to learn about “HEADS UP Pittsburgh.” Certified athletic trainers from the UPMC Sports Concussion Program supervise the program and testing. Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. Based upon the positive feedback the organization has received from current season ticket holders who were one-time Student Rush participants, the program has been successful in developing a long-term relationship with young, active Pittsburghers. During the 2012-13 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. To receive pre-sale information, students can text RUSH to 32623 to register for the American Eagle Student Rush Mobile Club. Each pregame text includes the opportunity to win two free tickets to the next home game! In addition to the 200 tickets offered each game, several special Student Rush nights will be held. At least 500 student rush tickets will be available for these select games at the American Eagle Gate. Music, prizes and giveaways will also be provided courtesy of American Eagle Outfitters. THREE PENGUINS CUP CHAMPIONS CROWNED By: Wes Crosby
CONSOL Energy Center played host to championship level hockey during the Penguins’ winning streak. That success filtered down to the high school level on March 20, as North Allegheny, Greater Latrobe and Quaker Valley were crowned 2013 PIHL Penguins Cup Championship Series champions. The night ended with a defensive Class AAA struggle, a scoreless contest heading into the third period between North Allegheny and Peters Township. But the Tigers took the final frame, and with it, the 2-0 victory and their first championship since 2007. It seemed fitting that after about 40 minutes of scoreless play, the deciding goal was of the shorthanded variety. With just under 12 minutes remaining and on the penalty kill, North Allegheny forward Joe Griffin carried the puck into Peters’ zone and was stripped by Peters defenseman Carter Ekberg. Ekberg, quickly running out of real estate, decided to pass the puck in front of his own net, but it went off Griffin’s stick and past goalie Brian Baker, giving N.A. a 1-0 lead. “I honestly don’t even know NORTH ALLEGHENY if I touched it,” Griffin said. “But I’ll take it. That’s how the game goes. We knew they were a high scoring team. They were definitely offensive. We kind of wanted to wear them out on defense and work defense up to offense.” Griffin added another goal with just over three minutes left to give the Tigers some breathing room. Both defenses dominated the action through the first two periods, giving up a combined 31 shots, few of which had a good chance of scoring, heading into the third. North Allegheny goalie Brad continued on page 113

Thornburgh picked up the shutout, which he said was “a dream come true.” “It’s a great feeling getting a shutout on the same rink my heroes get shutouts,” Thornburgh said. A few hours earlier, Class AA’s best defensive team did not disappoint, as Greater Latrobe took down Pine Richland 5-0, while killing two 5-on-3s in the last eight minutes to earn its first Penguins Cup since winning three straight from 2008 to ‘10. “To get back here again, and actually win this time, it’s an amazing feeling,” said Latrobe goalie Shane Brudnok, who picked up the shutout. “I have butterflies in my stomach. This one, it means a lot because it’s my last year and I wanted it to be as memorable as possible.” Brudnok was part of the 2010 Latrobe team that took home the championship at GREATER LATROBE Mellon Arena. After a physical and scoreless first period, Latrobe exploded for three goals in the second. The barrage started during a 4-on-4 when Latrobe forward Dalton Hunter dug the puck off of the end boards and found defenseman Daniel Staffen posting up about 10 feet in front of the net. Staffen buried a quick snap shot past Pine Richland goalie Brandon Bagnato. The Wildcats added two goals, scored by Hunter and forward Adam Ferguson, just 41 seconds apart, to give them a 3-0 lead entering the final period. Hunter, who finished with three points (2G-1A), added another goal in the third, taking the puck up the left side and putting it through Pine Richland forward Dillon Kessy’s legs before hitting the top-left corner of the net. continued on page 114

“The history here [at Latrobe] is unbelievable,” Hunter said. “Just to carry it on is an honor.” Class A’s championship game also showcased some high-caliber defense, as Quaker Valley earned its second consecutive Penguins Cup and 46th consecutive victory with a 5-1 win in a rematch of its 4-2 win over Mars in last season’s A championship game. The teams have combined to win the last six single-A championships, splitting the set 3-3. “This feels great,” said Quaker Valley forward Jimmy Perkins, who finished the game with three points (2G-1A). “Last year was a little QUAKER VALLEY bit different than this year, being the hunted this year, but it doesn’t get much better than this.” Perkins stole the show, beating Mars goalie Christian Knapp twice. After opening the scoring in the first period with a goal assisted by forwards Connor Quinn and Adam Pilewicz, Perkins gave the Quakers earned a picture-perfect goal to give the them a commanding 3-0 lead with just under two minutes left in the second. Perkins dragged the puck through the Planets’ crease, causing Knapp to fall forward, and then roofed it, knocking the water bottle onto the ice. “Clayton [Bouchard] made a great play down low to get the puck down there,” Perkins said. “I think our D chipped it down to him and I was about to give it back to Clayton, but the D stepped to the side, so I was able to get around [Knapp] and I just shot it up high.” The Quakers’ defense was just as impressive, killing six penalties and allowing just five Mars shots in the second period.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PROJECT POWER PLAY Project Power Play represents a group of partners; The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, who are focused on building 12 multi-sport dek hockey rinks to encourage physical activity and provide accessibility to hockey facilities for youth. The first two rinks in the City of Pittsburgh are located at Banksville Park on Crane Avenue and at Lewis Park in Hazelwood adjacent to the YMCA, both opened at the end of 2012. Over the next three years, 10 more rinks will be constructed as part of the $2.1 million project. Project Power Play funding comes from Highmark which is committing $1.5 million and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation which is providing $600,000. Additional contributions come from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the local municipalities, which are providing land for the rinks, as well as maintenance, lighting and other support. Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation says, “The Foundation’s mission includes creating opportunities for youth that stress physical fitness, teamwork and sportsmanship. The dek hockey rinks and related programs will serve youth in the region, fulfill the Foundation’s mission to encourage youth fitness, and help to make hockey a more accessible sport. These are the best dek hockey rinks anywhere,” Soltesz says. “You have to see it to believe it.” The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches, penalty box, scorer’s table, goals at each end, and start-up dek hockey equipment. Each facility will have nine access gates, including handicap access via the service gate. Black vinyl fences enclose each facility. Soltesz says, “We are proud of our sport. We are proud of our region, and we are proud to put these types of facilities in the communities.”

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS FOUNDATION
PensFIT
In a first-of-its-kind program, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is providing free floor hockey equipment to more than 250 elementary and middle schools in Allegheny County. The program, known as PensFIT, got its start on Friday, November 9 when Penguins alum Phil Bourque delivered the first set of equipment to Neil Armstrong Middle School in Bethel Park. The equipment for each school retails at more than $1,000 and includes goals, sticks, stick bags, hockey balls, goalie equipment and a storage bag. In addition to providing student workbooks and instructional manuals, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will offer a seminar at CONSOL Energy Center for the schools’ physical education teachers – hosted by the Penguins’ coaching staff and team alumni. PensFIT is designed as a three-year initiative to assist elementary schools in providing new opportunities for physical education classes. The long-term goal is to supply free equipment to 600 elementary and middle schools in 10 counties. Schools from surrounding counties will be added during the second year of the program. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has teamed up with corporate partner FedEx Ground on delivery of the equipment. FedEx Ground will provide shipping to the schools free of charge.

WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON
PENGUINS
Joining the American Hockey League for its inaugural season in 1999-00, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have established themselves as one the most successful franchises in the league. After posting a 23-43-9-5 record in its first season of play and missing the playoffs, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton enjoyed one of the biggest turnarounds in league history as the team made it to its first-ever Calder Cup Final appearance in 2001. Though they would fall to the Saint John Flames in six games, the Penguins would carry on a tradition of success both on and off the ice. In total, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has appeared in the Calder Cup Final three times and reached the playoffs in 11 out of 13 seasons, including 10 consecutive postseason berths — tied for the longest active streak in the AHL. The 1999-00 season saw the Penguins sellout 26 games their inaugural season. The following year Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton set the league record by selling out the entire season (40-games) en route to a streak BRAD THIESSEN of 144 consecutive sellouts that still stands today as an AHL record. The AHL-affiliate to the Pittsburgh Penguins since its inception, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has helped develop former draft picks such as Marc-Andre Fleury, Brooks Orpik, Tyler Kennedy and Joe Vitale. Ten former Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lifted the Stanley Cup when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit in seven games in 2009. continued on page 150

The Penguins have also seen many of their coaches rise up the ranks with Dan Bylsma and Todd Reirden manning the bench in Pittsburgh, Michel Therrien in Montreal, Todd Richards in Columbus and Mike Yeo in Minnesota. The 2010-11 season marked one for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton history books. Under the guidance of first-year head coach John Hynes, the SIMON DESPRES Penguins went 58-21-0-1 to claim their first-ever Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as AHL regular-season champions. In the process, Hynes won the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s Outstanding Coach, while the team set records for wins in a season (58), points ZAC SILL in a season (117), and fewest losses in a season (21). Goaltender Brad Thiessen joined Dany Sabourin as the team’s second recipient of the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award. Now in their 14th season of play, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have amassed more wins (450) and points (987) than any other team in the league over the last ten years.

MIKE LANGE
PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 36th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM “The X” and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

ATI – INVESTING IN PITTSBURGH’S FUTURE… Committed to Maintaining American Leadership in Manufacturing Mission-Critical Metallics® ATI is building an advanced Hot Rolling and Processing Facility (HRPF) in Brackenridge, PA. This project, just outside Pittsburgh, will be the most powerful hot rolling facility in the world for manufacturing nickel-based alloys, titanium, specialty alloys, zirconium and stainless steel sheet and plate. At a cost of $1.1 billion, the HRPF is among the largest industrial projects currently underway in the United States. When the HRPF is completed in 2014, ATI will have invested nearly $4.4 billion in new, advanced manufacturing capabilities and asset acquisitions since 2004. These investments have been in Western Pennsylvania, Utah, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Oregon, Alabama and Massachusetts. ATI believes that Pittsburgh, Western Pennsylvania and the United States must be in the vanguard of global manufacturing and that the American worker can compete with anyone given the best products, tools and technologies.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will feature 13 teams playing at the AAA level — eight boys teams and five girls teams. “Part of our overall vision of supporting local youth hockey has been to create an elite Pittsburgh Penguins youth program that would attract top players in different age groups, offering an excellent environment to develop skills, teach teamwork and compete against top teams from other areas,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) do such a great job of growing the game here, and there are a number of good amateur programs. But we thought it made sense to have a AAA program directly affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

LITTLE PENGUINS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY
Sidney Crosby and his family wanted to help parents introduce their children to the game of hockey — and to do it without having to incur a prohibitive up-front cost. The result is the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program. This generous donation and tremendous, one-of-a-kind opportunity allows children, aged 4-8, to receive free head-to-toe hockey equipment and 10 sessions of on-ice instruction. The 2012-13 season will be the fifth consecutive year for the Little Penguins program, which continues to grow. Last season twenty-three rinks hosted the program, which includes four girls-only locations. Since the program began during the 2008-2009 season more than 3,200 children have been introduced to hockey through this program. This season, 1,000 participants aged 4-8 will receive free gear and learn the game. Thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, and an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins jersey and helmet stickers. After four highly successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. During the pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding participating rinks, starting dates, number of sessions, and times of instructional sessions, which are listed on the Penguins’ website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to

offer the program again for another year,” Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh area to take up hockey. With the Little Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey equipment and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” “It’s a tribute to Sid and his family that they want to reach out and create this incredible opportunity for children in the Pittsburgh area,” said Penguins CEO and President David Morehouse. “One of their goals was to help parents by providing free head-to-toe hockey equipment to properly equip their children. The Penguins are honored to join Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods in supporting Sid and this great program.”

BEHIND THE BENCH WITH COACH DAN TIPS FOR YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS
SKATE, SKATE, SKATE No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straight-ahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-to-tape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.
DID I MENTION HOW IMPORTANT SKATING IS?

PITTSBURGH BECOMING A HOCKEY HOTBED

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania might not have a fancy nickname like ‘Hockeytown’, nor is it located in “The State of Hockey” — which is one of Minnesota’s unofficial nicknames for those of you scoring at home — but over the last decade, the ‘Steel City’ has cemented its status as one of the rising hotbeds of the hockey universe. Less than a decade ago, that statement would have been nearly impossible to believe. As the sweltering summer heat swept through our region in 2005, 2005 NHL DRAFT the NHL was in the final stages of wrapping up a lockout that cost the league the entire ’04-05 campaign. Locally, the Penguins were coming off a NHL-worst 58-point season in the year preceding the lockout, and local amateur hockey numbers were in sharp decline. Those fortunes changed with the fortuitous bounce of a ping-pong ball on July 22, 2005 — a stoke of luck that delivered wonderkid Sidney Crosby to the black-and-gold. In the blink of an eye, Evgeni Malkin joined the fold and the duo quickly transformed an up-andcoming team into Stanley Cup champions by 2009. The on-ice and box office success achieved by the Penguins since the arrival of Crosby and Malkin has increased hockey’s profile in Pittsburgh tenfold. Before Crosby’s debut in October 2005, Pittsburgh didn’t have much of a presence within the hockey world outside of legendary Hall of Fame owner Mario Lemieux, who was winding down his illustrious career. Sure, Upper St. Clair native Ryan Malone was coming off an impressive 22-goal rookie campaign with his hometown team, RYAN MALONE and Plum’s R.J. Umberger was set to

make an NHL roster for the first time with the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. But at the time, despite the talents each displayed, both seemed more like exceptions rather than trendsetters. While Malone, who helped the Penguins reach the Cup Final in ’08 before departing R.J. UMBERGER to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Umberger continue to produce annually on hockey’s grandest stage, the next generation of Pittsburgh-born and trained players continues to make their mark on the hockey world. The dramatic improvement of the Pittsburgh amateur hockey pipeline was showcased at the 2011 NHL Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota, when four of the first 64 selections — J.T. Miller (NY Rangers, 1st round, 15th overall); John Gibson (Anaheim; 2nd round; 39th overall); Brandon Saad (Chicago, 2nd round, 43rd overall); and Vince Trocheck (Florida; 3rd round; 64th overall) — each grew up playing their youth hockey within the local amateur hockey ranks. With his selection at No. 15 overall, Miller became the highest-drafted player ever from the Pittsburgh region, edging out Umberger, who was taken 16th overall by Vancouver in 2001. Gibson was the second goaltender taken in the ’11 draft. Saad, who slipped a bit on draft day after being considered a top-five talent earlier that year, became the first of the quartet to reach the NHL when he made the Blackhawks’ ’1112 opening-night roster. He appeared in two BRANDON SAAD regular-season and two playoff contests with the Hawks, while in between starring for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). As good as Saad and Gibson were last year — and First and Third-Team All-OHL honors, respectively, indicate both enjoyed fine seasons — neither was the best Pittsburgh-born player in the OHL.

That honor went to London Knights goaltender — and Wexford native — Michael Houser, who like the four players drafted in ’11 is an alum of the Pittsburgh Hornets ‘AAA’ program. Houser put together one of the finest junior seasons ever while leading the Knights to an OHL playoff championship and a runner-up finish at the Memorial Cup. Houser, who signed an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers organization during the summer, was named the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’, won the OHL’s ‘Goaltender of the Year’ award and he became just the third American to win the OHL Most Outstanding Player award after posting a 46-15-0-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. His 46 wins tied the OHL record. Although Team USA had a disappointing showing at the 2012 World Junior Championship, it is impressive to note that of the 23 players who comprised the Americans’ roster, four (17%) hailed from Western Pennsylvania — Saad, Miller, Gibson and defenseman Stephen Johns, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame who was selected by Chicago in the second round (60th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft. This April, the 2013 Frozen Four — college hockey’s version of March Madness — will come to CONSOL Energy Center. If recent Frozen Fours are any indication, there is a good chance somebody from the 412 or 724 area code will factor heavily into determining a champion. That’s because each of the last three winners — Boston College in 2012 and ’10, and Minnesota-Duluth in ’11 — have been buoyed by local contributors. Leading the charge for Boston College at the ’12 Frozen Four was a pair of Mt. Lebanon Blue Devil alums — starting netminder Parker Milner and defenseman Patrick Wey. On their way to leading the Eagles to the title, both players were named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Wey, who was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, and Milner also played continued on page 183

smaller roles on Boston College’s ’10 championship squad. In between BC’s victories, Plum native Kenny Reiter helped backstop the University of Minnesota-Duluth to a Frozen Four championship over Michigan in ’11 — meaning the winning netminder from the past two national champions has come from Pittsburgh. Young players across our area from mites to high school players to stars at the college and junior level strive each day to become permanent NHL fixtures like Malone and Umberger. Dylan Reese, Mike Weber and Matt Bartkowski are three young defensemen with a sprinkle of NHL experience who appear poised to make that leap in the coming years. The elder statesman of the group is Reese, who like Malone hails from Upper St. Clair and is joining his hometown team this season. Prior to signing with Pittsburgh during the offseason, Reese has played a combined 74 NHL games with the New York Islanders over the past three seasons. Cranberry native Weber has the most experience of the three, suiting up for 132 games with the Buffalo Sabres entering the ’12-13 campaign. A punishing defender, Weber is probably most notorious to DYLAN REESE fans in these parts for not being afraid to mix it up physically with Crosby and Malkin in recent matchups against them. Bartkowski made the opening-night roster for the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season. The previous spring, he participated in Boston’s march to the Cup as a member of the team’s taxi squad. Ironically, each of Bartkowski’s first three NHL games during the ’10-11 season came at CONSOL Energy Center. As you can see, hockey is alive and well in Pittsburgh at all levels — and that’s without us mentioning the vastly-improved Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and the numerous players slated to join the college and junior ranks this coming season. Thanks to the on-ice success of the Penguins translating throughout the local community to children of all ages, hockey is only going to continue growing in these parts well into the future.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ELITE TO HOST NATIONALS By: Brian Zagorac
The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods will proudly be hosting the 2013 Tier 1 USA Hockey National Championship next month starting Wednesday, April 3 to Sunday, April 7. The top teams from the U14, U16 and U18 divisions will be battling it out for the rights to hoist the national championship banner at RMU Island Sports Center on Neville Island. The Penguins Elite will field teams in each division. The U18 team is coming off winning the Tier 1 Elite League Championship and looks to carry that momentum into the national tournament. The U18 boys finished the season with an overall record of 30-14-1 and currently ranked fifth in the nation, according to MyHockeyRankings.com. The U16 team suffered a tough ending to their season, losing in the league playoff semifinals after high expectations. The loss was especially difficult after the U16 Pens Elite had such a strong finish to the season, winning six out of the last nine. The boys earned a final record of 27-13-3-1 and currently sit in the seven spot of the national rankings.

Expectations are equally high for the U14 boy’s team after a solid regular season. The Pens Elite finished with a record 31-22-12 and have won four straight. The team looks to continue their strong effort at home, as they have fared well on home ice. Meanwhile, another Pens Elite team will look to bring home a national championship. This one, however, will be three time zones away, rather than three bridges. The U14 girls will travel to San Jose in early April, and they will try to lock up another banner. The girls, considered favorites to win the whole thing, are coming off their latest feat of a Mid-American District regional championship. This is the fourth straight regional championship for the Pens Elite U14 girls, who also claimed the Tier 1 Elite League Championship in early February. The Pens Elite will be joined by another local team at the Tier II level, the U16 Steel City Selects, who also won their district championship and earned a berth in the national tournament.
All games will be streamed live on fasthockey.com.

PENS PROFILE
MATT NISKANEN By: Mark Madden
When the Penguins hosted Washington on Nov. 19, Matt Niskanen experienced highs and lows. But ultimately, there was a happy ending. The Penguins defenseman got victimized by a fluke bounce leading to Washington’s only goal, a second-period tally by Alex Ovechkin that staked the Capitals to a 1-0 lead. But Niskanen buried the game-winner with 8:02 remaining, netting a feed from Matt Cooke just after Cooke had finished serving a double-minor. The tally was Niskanen’s fourth of the season. The Penguins beat the Caps, 2-1. The victory was their 10th straight. (The Penguins had won 13 in row at press time.) “We want to get better at winning games,” the Minnesota native said after the triumph. “We’re not just going out there to play and hope someone gets their points and we get the win that way. We’re trying to fine-tune things, and we take everything as a challenge. “We’re still in the hunt to be in a good position in the standings. We want to get better. We know what’s coming in the post-season. We want to be flying right from game one.” Niskanen got four goals in 75 games last season. He scored four in his first 25 games this campaign. When asked if he’d been working on his shooting, the 6-foot, 209-pounder said, “We work on our shot almost every day. I can’t put my finger on one thing [concerning] why it’s going better. I shoot the puck a lot, work on it during practice and try to get it off quick. “Today I was able to pick a spot, but not usually. Usually, I’m just trying to get it and shoot it as quick and as hard as I can. Just get it on the net.” Niskanen’s game-winner came after Cooke left the penalty box after serving four minutes for boarding and unsportsmanlike conduct. Cooke took a pass from Crosby, then found Niskanen coming late. Niskanen — who had started the play with an outlet pass to Crosby — made no mistake with his shot, beating Caps goalie Braden Holtby cleanly to the glove side. The goal came just nine seconds after Cooke’s penalties had finished. Coach Dan Bylsma encourages defensemen to jump into the rush. Niskanen made his coach’s philosophy pay off. continued on page 203

“[Defensemen] support the rush,” said Niskanen, 26. “It’s expected of everyone. You’ve got to be part of the way out of the defensive zone. After that, be an option. Support the rush. “You don’t want to be reckless. I don’t think anyone wants to be sniffing around down by the goal line. [Kris Letang] has good instincts. He can do that once in a while. He’s got such good skating ability. “But for the most part, you want to be a second wave. Support the rush, and you never know. Like that goal I got. You might get that chance.” Niskanen came to Pittsburgh from Dallas at the 2011 trade deadline and has since played the best hockey of his career. His mobility and puck skills mesh perfectly with what Bylsma expects from defensemen. Niskanen inadvertently gave Ovechkin a clean chance that produced the Caps’ only goal. A shot by Washington’s Troy Brouwer hit Niskanen in the hip. The puck caromed right to Ovechkin at the bottom of the left circle. “Some nights the bounces are just going to go that way,” Niskanen said. “If you’re in the right position and something happens like that, you can’t really do anything about that. The focus has got to be on playing the right way. “We’ve had some third-period wins during this streak. We just keep playing the right way, and we’ll find the goals we need in the end.” That night against Washington, Niskanen found that goal. He credits the crowd for providing a boost. The CONSOL Energy Center faithful exploded when the Penguins killed Cooke’s doubleminor, then went totally off the hook when Niskanen found the net behind Holtby. “We really buckled down on the penalty-kill, negated their chances, the crowd goes nuts, and we feed off that,” Niskanen said. “You feel the energy in the building, and we created a lot of energy from that point on. “It felt like there was no way we were going to lose that game.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

BEAU BENNETT #KnowBeau @ohzoe_ What do you miss the most about California? #KnowBeau “The weather. You get kind of summer all year around and it’s nice. I got a little taste of it when I went home for Christmas for a day, but it’s been pretty nice there lately and it’s what I miss the most for sure.” @stetz_hockey How old we’re you when you first got involved with hockey? @penguins @BeauBennett78 #KnowBeau “I started when I was three roller skating. My older brothers were playing, so I just skated around the rink a little bit. Then I played roller hockey until I was nine. I made the switch to ice and played both growing up till when I went away to Juniors. That’s when I officially switched over to ice only.” @dontlookatmeugh What’s your favorite thing to do with your downtime? #KnowBeau “I go to the beach every day in the summer and play a lot of beach volleyball with my friends back home. We’re not very good, but we do enjoy it.” @emilyreed29 How did you get the nickname ‘Sunshine’? #KnowBeau “If you’ve ever seen Remember the Titans, the new guy coming in from California. [Martin] started it and it just kind of stuck.” @BrittanyRenkin @penguins What is your favorite TV show? #KnowBeau “TV show, I’ve seen every episode of Two and a Half Men. I think that’s a classic and I enjoy watching Criminal Minds as well. Criminal Minds just because they always have marathons on, so you can bang out like 10 episodes in a row. And Two and a Half Men was something I just got into in college and it was online, so I watched all the episodes.” @ohmandi17 @penguins Do you surf since you are originally from California? #KnowBeau “I’ve tried surfing. It’s not one of my skills, I’d say. It’s very difficult. If anyone’s ever tried it, it’s something once you get the hang of it, I’m sure it’s fun. But for the time being, it’s just miserable out there, so I stay away from the surfing in the summer.”

LEARNING AS THEY GO By: Mike Prisuta
For Penguins’ prospects who spent this season competing for college hockey’s national championship it’s about progress and pace. The organization wants to see all of them make the farther. But the latter is up to the individual player much more than it is some preordained organizational timetable. “You look at them as marathoners,” explained Penguins assistant to the general manager Tom Fitzgerald. “We don’t need them to be ready next year. We don’t need them to be ready the year after that. “If they decide they think they’re ready, we talk about it and come to that conclusion together.” The 2010 NHL Entry Draft stands as an example of how the Penguins put into practice what Fitzgerald preaches. Pittsburgh’s No. 1 pick, Beau Bennett, turned pro this season after two seasons at Denver University and saw CONSOL Energy Center as a member of the Penguins well in advance of the upcoming Frozen Four. Bryan Rust, the Penguins’ No. 3 pick in 2010, went to this year’s NCAA Tournament as a junior at Notre Dame. Ken Agostino, the Penguins’ No. 5 pick in 2010, did the same as a junior at Yale. “Some [prospects] might not play all four years,” in college, Fitzgerald said. “Some might need all four.” Bennett’s path to the NHL turned out to be quicker than most, but that doesn’t mean the Pens’ draftee collegians still on campus aren’t on course. Rust enjoyed a breakthrough season playing left wing on the No. 1 line of the Irish, scoring more goals through his first 40 games as a junior (15) than he had as a freshman and sophomore combined (11). continued on page 218

Agostino was even better, leading Yale in scoring and compiling numbers (15+22 through his first 33 games) in a manner that suggested he’s starting to get it in terms of perfecting his craft while skating on the left wing of Yale’s No. 1 line. “He’s really taken the next step,” Fitzgerald assessed. “He’s heavy on pucks, very strong with the puck. He shoots the puck hard and protects it well. He works the corners and I think he has good KEN AGOSTINO hockey sense. “He’s right where he needs to be.” To the degree that if the Penguins had an organizational Hobey Baker Award given annually to their college player of the year, Fitzgerald said Agostino would deserve to win it. University of Massachusetts-Lowell sophomore left winger Scott Wilson (seventh round, 2011) has already been decorated. After averaging more than a point a game as a freshman (16+22 in 37 games) Wilson was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year. The list of previous winners who went on to make the NHL includes Colin Wilson, Teddy Purcell, Jimmy Howard, Brian Gionta, Paul Kariya and Brian Leetch. Wilson’s numbers dipped slightly this season (15+19 in his first 38 games) but the degree of difficulty associated with his total increased significantly. “Last year he flew under the radar,” Fitzgerald said. “This year he was a marked man and that was the next step, how do you handle playing against the top line, the top defensive pair? “He handled it very well.”

Another player who handled what was thrown at him in a manner that got Fitzgerald’s attention was Boston University freshman goaltender Sean Maguire (fourth round, 2012). Maguire got off to a relatively slow start and fell behind fellow freshman Matt O’Connor in the Terriers’ goaltender rotation. But after O’Connor was lost for the season due to a collapsed TEDDY BLUEGER lung in February Maguire inherited the net. He responded by going 6-2-0 over his last eight games, with two shutouts, and by leading BU to the Hockey east Tournament championship game. Maguire ended up leading BU in wins (13-8-0), goals-against average (2.54), save percentage (.926) and shutouts (four). When he wasn’t playing as often as O’Connor in the early going Maguire “just worried about the next save, the next shot,” Fitzgerald said. “He worried about what he could control.” Also playing for teams that made the NCAA Tournament this season were Minnesota State freshman forward Teddy Blueger (second round, 2012) and St. Cloud State senior forward Ben Hanowski (third round, 2009). Hanowski completed his second season as captain. “That says a lot about his character,” Fitzgerald said.
