LETTER FROM PENGUINS CEO & PRESIDENT : : The Pittsburgh Penguins are more than a hockey team; we also are citizens of this community, proud Pittsburghers, and our goal is to use the unique platform of professional sports to make a deep and lasting impact on our city and our region. This is reflected not only in the $3.6 million we contributed to charitable and community causes during the 2012-13 season through the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, but also in the smiles created on many faces when our players visit Children’s Hospital during the holidays; take part in Make-A-Wish parties and Project Bundle-Up shopping days; personally deliver tickets to season ticket holders; and surprise students by providing free pizzas to the Student Rush line. For the Penguins, it all starts at the top, with two owners — Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle — who are driven by a commitment to community outreach and fan interaction. Their mission is to make the Penguins a premier franchise, both on and off the ice, and that feeling is contagious throughout all levels of the organization. Signature events include the Skates & Plates Charity Gala, the Wine Tasting Gala, the Summer Sticks Golf Classic and the Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Tournament. The new Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation also has helped to focus our charitable and community efforts on youth activities, including youth hockey, to help build a foundation for a very bright future. Thank you for your support. Let’s Go Pens!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
7 FREE GAME FOR KIDS : : The genesis for this program came from a desire to give the team’s young and growing fan base the opportunity to enjoy a game at the new CONSOL Energy Center and thank our young fans. The Penguins’ Free Game for Kids program has provided a unique experience for our area’s youth to attend a Penguins home game and has given 36,000 of our youngest fans that opportunity for free since 2010. PENGUINS FOUNDATION 50/50 RAFFLE : : Midway through the 2012-13 season, the Penguins Foundation Charity Assist Raffle changed over to a 50/50 raffle. Fans purchased tickets from sellers in kiosks and on the concourses for a chance to take home half the total purse. Throughout the season, over $1.1 million was raised and divided between the winners and local 501(c)(3) charities. GAME DAY AUCTIONS : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation held silent auctions at every Penguins home game that featured many different items of Penguins memorabilia. Fans bid on items at one of two locations on the concourses — located behind Sections 104 and 201. Proceeds from the auctions totaled over $80,000 and benefited the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the many programs it funds. : : The Penguins’ Free Game for Kids gives young fans an opportunity to enjoy a game at CONSOL Energy Center.

There will be 26 instructional programs at 23 area rinks — including four designated for girls. HEADS UP PITTSBURGH : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine teamed up on a first-of-its-kind initiative — HEADS UP Pittsburgh. Through various events and educational training sessions, HEADS UP Pittsburgh teaches concussion signs and symptoms, the steps to take if an athlete has a suspected concussion and the importance of athletes taking time to recover. : : Sidney Crosby instructed young hockey players who participated in the Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program.
The program kicked off in 2011 and included free baseline concussion testing for youth hockey players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), others registered locally through USA Hockey programs and has since extended to athletes in other sports. The newest program addition provides free neckstrengthening kits for concussion prevention. Last year, 2,300 youth hockey players were tested. Our thanks to the CDC and Community College of Allegheny County for playing key roles in this unique program.
36 PENSFIT : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation continues to develop programs which are designed to introduce children to the sport of hockey and facilitate an increase in physical activity. Beginning with the 2012 school year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation launched PensFIT. PensFIT is designed to provide free street hockey equipment to qualifying elementary schools in Allegheny County. In addition, the Penguins, the Penguins Foundation and California University of Pennsylvania have teamed up to design a street hockey curriculum for physical education classrooms, which will also be suitable for use in community recreation center programs. Beyond a professional curriculum, the program will provide teacher training, instruction and materials. The program is funded from the proceeds of Civic Arena ornament sales.
PENGUINS SUMMER HOCKEY SCHOOL : : The Penguins Summer Hockey School is the flagship of the Penguins’ youth hockey camps and clinics. Each year, more than 160 local hockey players participate in the five-day camp. Players were videotaped and received one-onone sessions with Coach Dan to analyze their skating and skills. Parents were invited to sit in on these sessions. Off-ice conditioning, as well as creating and reinforcing the positive attitudes that Coach Dan is noted for were important ingredients in this signature hockey camp. GOALIE CAMP : : This unique camp, designed exclusively for goaltenders, was led by Mike Chiasson, the Penguins’ Manager of Youth Hockey Programs. Mike is a goaltender and has been involved in coaching goalies for the past nine years. This camp provided goaltenders with two hours of on-ice instruction each day, as well as off-ice drills. Participants worked on such skills as skating and mobility, positioning, depth, rebound control, post-save recovery, and reading and reacting to game situations. Off-ice they engaged in dynamic stretching, plyometrics and hand-eye coordination drills. PENGUINS HOLIDAY POWER SKATING SCHOOL : : Developing quickness on the ice is an important skill for any hockey player. In the NHL, emphasis has been placed on speed and skill and it has spawned a trickle-down effect to the amateur levels. The way to get ahead is to move your feet, effectively. Seventy youth hockey players took advantage of this mid-season opportunity to concentrate on and refine their skating with Penguins Skating Consultant Marianne Watkins and Mike Chiasson, Penguins’ Manager of Youth Hockey Programs. Teams competed in the platinum or gold championship games and each team received a trophy to take home to their rink. Each player also received a participation medal. PROJECT POWER PLAY : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer Project Power Play to promote fun, organized physical activity. As hockey becomes more popular in the tri-state area, Project Power Play allows young players access to newly constructed, outdoor, multi-use athletic facilities. These structures provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. THE PLAN Our 4-year plan entails the construction of 12 facilities. The selection of the sites is carefully planned by taking into consideration need, utilization, supervision and location, which is primarily in local parks or adjacent to managed youth development facilities. SUPPORT Each rink has a steel dasherboard system, sports court and is enclosed by a cyclone fence. A Project Power Play start-up kit is included which details basic skills, game instructions and manuals. Directions, planning and developing skill sessions, and scrimmage games will be coordinated by Penguins staff. The Penguins will provide ongoing support for the facilities.

47 PITTSBURGH MIGHTY PENGUINS : : Sled hockey is a fast-growing, internationally recognized sport and a key event in the Paralympic games. It provides a means for physically challenged individuals to play competitive ice hockey. Getting a good workout, building self-esteem and being part of a team are just a few of the benefits. The Mighty Penguins organization was formed by volunteers from Shriners Hospital in Erie in May of 1998. Many local organizations have helped their program by donating ice time, equipment, customized hockey gear and insurance. This year, the Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that included youth, junior and adult players. These teams competed in tournaments throughout Canada and the United States. Notable players: Josh Wirt, a 2002 Paralympic Gold Medalist; Daniel Hefley and Nevin Gray, selected for the 2010 USA Junior National Team. In addition, Daniel McCoy, selected to be on the 2012 USA National Men’s Team, received player of the game honors in South Korea and took home a gold medal for Team USA. PITTSBURGH ICE : : Each hockey season, Pittsburgh ICE (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play ice hockey and experience such a great game. The program was established in October 2000 with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and its Alumni Association. As part of the National Hockey League’s “Hockey is for Everyone” initiative, Pittsburgh ICE provides boys and girls in the Pittsburgh area the opportunity to learn to skate and play ice hockey at no cost. DEFENDING THE BLUE LINE : : : : Players for the Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins listen intently to on-ice instruction.
Defending the Blue Line is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. The mission of Defending the Blue Line (DTBL) is ensuring that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps, special events and financial assistance for the registration fees and other costs associated with hockey.
48 T.G.I. FRIDAY’S® PENGUINS KIDS CLUB : : The T.G.I. Friday’s® Penguins Kids Club was a huge success with more than 7,150 members participating last year. Along with their membership card, kids received discounts to PensGear and T.G.I. Friday’s®, a Penguins lanyard, wall stickers, monthly e-blasts with cool information, contests, online wallpapers, games and much more. Parents can sign up their children by visiting pittsburghpenguins.com today. HIGHMARK WALL OF CHAMPIONS : : With the help of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Penguins pay tribute to the pride and power of Western PA hockey by honoring all Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) teams for their efforts through the Highmark Wall of Fame. The official team jersey for each program has been framed and proudly displayed along the main concourse of CONSOL Energy Center, near the Kids Zone, between sections 110 and 115. POINTSTREAK : : The Pittsburgh Penguins and Pointstreak Technology Solutions partnered with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League (PIRHL) and the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) to create an integrated network that will track game scores and statistics for the respective leagues at all local rinks. Game scores and statistics will be updated in real time and are accessible via pihlnetwork.com, pahlnetwork.com, Smart Phone technology and an interactive display inside CONSOL Energy Center. HIGHMARK PLAYER OF THE MONTH : : For more than a decade, the Penguins have honored local high school hockey players with the Highmark Player of the Month award. Each month during the PIHL season, coaches and league officials select four candidates to be recognized for exceptional leadership, on-ice accomplishments, and overall commitment to their teams. Award winners receive complimentary tickets to a Penguins home game, a commemorative plaque, in-game recognition, and will be featured on the Pittsburgh Youth Hockey Network website.
: : On Feb. 20, 2013, PIHL players were honored during a Penguins game for receiving Highmark Player of the Month awards.
51 YMCA JR. PENGUINS : : The Pittsburgh Penguins, the Greater Pittsburgh YMCAs and Trib Total Media teamed up to bring the game of ball hockey to the youth of our region. This program has grown to include over 3,100 children and 44 facilities since its inception. Junior Penguins teams are composed of both boys and girls ages 6-12 and the season runs between 8 and 11 weeks. Dedicated staff helped create and share valuable lessons that can be learned through hockey: sportsmanship, teamwork and the benefits of exercise. PIHL : : The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) is the region’s governing body for high school hockey. School teams in the PIHL field clubs include the Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity levels with Division A, AA, AAA and Open divisions. The Highmark Player of the Month award and the Bob Johnson Character award are a few of the high school hockey endeavors that the Penguins support in their ongoing efforts to grow the game in our region. PENGUINS POND PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER : : The Penguins once again created an outdoor community ice rink at the new Highmark Stadium in Station Square on the South Side. The Penguins joined forces with 84 Lumber and other local sponsors to build the rink with a magical city view as the backdrop. 55 OPEN PRACTICE : : Since 2010, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation have presented the Open Hockey Practice at CONSOL Energy Center. This event offers a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students, in grades one through eight, from across Allegheny County to see the Penguins at work. Students experience informational videos about behind-the-scenes aspects of the team and facility and have the opportunity to ask questions of the players and coaches during and after practice. The whole event includes educational themes and everyone is given an activity book focused on education, health and nutrition to take home. SCHOLARSHIPS : : Since 1992, the Pittsburgh Penguins have awarded over $150,000 in higher education scholarships including 70 City of Pittsburgh Scholarships and 24 Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarships to deserving Pittsburgh area high school seniors. Each year, Penguins scholarship applications are available through the participating high schools and online at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org. Students must have a grade-point average of 3.2 or better to qualify for a Penguins scholarship. CITY OF PITTSBURGH SCHOLARSHIPS : : In conjunction with Pittsburgh Public Schools, three $1,500 scholarships are awarded to Pittsburgh inner-city high school seniors annually on the basis of academic achievement, community service and participation in school activities. franchise to its first Stanley Cup Championship in 1991. Throughout his coaching career, Johnson helped many high school, college and professional athletes become better individuals as well as outstanding students and athletes. Co-sponsored by the Penguins Booster Club, this scholarship is awarded to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior for academic excellence, community service and providing leadership and sportsmanship as a member of their high school’s hockey team.
56 PENGUINS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association annually awards a scholarship valued at $2,000 to a Western Pennsylvania high school senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, good citizenship, school and community involvement, and who has shown an intense love for the game of hockey. Since 2005, they have awarded nine scholarships to deserving students.

Players answer questions about their education and personal hobbies while emphasizing the importance of school and reading. EXPLORER SERIES : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation invited 500 children and parents to learn about Robotics through educational films, demonstrations and hands on activities, all at the CONSOL Energy Center. The children enjoyed a day of fun while exploring the world of science.

SKATES & PLATES CHARITY GALA PRESENTED BY TRIB TOTAL MEDIA : : Since 1986, the Penguins have hosted an annual charity gala for the benefit of local charities and have raised over $5.3 million for medical research. In 2009, the Penguins re-organized the team’s gala and hosted its signature event, the Skates & Plates Charity Gala presented by Trib Total Media. Penguins’ players don tuxedos and pass plates instead of pucks as they greet guests and serve as celebrity waiters for the evening. The Gala benefits the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Mario Lemieux Foundation and Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. VIP DINNER AND WINE TASTING GALA PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER AND NEMACOLIN WOODLANDS RESORT : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation invites guests to celebrate wines from around the world, sample hors d’oeuvres and bid on exclusive auction items while mingling with Pittsburgh personalities at their annual Wine Tasting Gala sponsored by 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Over the past two years, the event has raised over $450,000 for the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s youth initiatives.
: : Deryk Engelland traded his normal uniform for a tuxedo on March 5, 2013 to serve as a celebrity waiter and raise money for charity at the team’s Skates & Plates Charity Gala.
62 HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER : : The annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night is held each October, a month that highlights Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) as a league-wide initiative to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Penguins players participate by wearing decals on their helmets all month; filming Public Service Announcements to air during October games; joining the coaching staff, broadcasters, hockey operations and front office staff in donning special HFC ties; and wearing purple jerseys during their morning skate and pre-game warm-ups. The purple jerseys are autographed and auctioned for the benefit of the Mario Lemieux Foundation and UPMC Cancer Centers. Young cancer patients from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation serve as special guests in the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin charity suites. Children from each suite are selected to ride the Zambonis pre-game and during the first intermission. In addition, the Penguins donate a suite for adult patients and cancer survivors from UPMC Cancer Centers. Hockey Fights Cancer is a component of the NHL’s “Biggest Assist Happens Off the Ice” campaign. CHARITY AUCTION ON ROOT SPORTS : : The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and the Mario Lemieux Foundation teamed up for a Charity Auction on ROOT Sports. Fans attending the game the night of the auction had the opportunity to purchase mystery bags full of Penguins memorabilia, which included an autographed item from one of the players. In addition, ROOT Sports dedicated their broadcast to the auction and promoted sales of the bags online, along with a variety of auction items that could be bid on via the Penguins Foundation website. All proceeds benefited the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer and neonatal research, as well as the Penguins Foundation youth initiatives.

: : Penguins players showed their support of Hockey Fights Cancer by wearing purple jerseys during pre-game warm-ups.
65 BEARD-A-THON : : The Beard-A-Thon campaign encouraged fans to “grow one for the team” for the duration of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs and have their friends, family and business associates pledge them. Fans that were unable or unwilling to grow a playoff beard could also pledge their favorite NHL player or build a virtual playoff beard on the website. Proceeds from the Penguins’ Beard-A-Thon presented by Supercuts campaign benefited the Mario Lemieux Foundation. This league-wide initiative raised over $330,400 for various charities with Penguins fans contributing over $72,200. ALUMNI GOLF CLASSIC PRESENTED BY 84 LUMBER : : In 1998, the Penguins Alumni Association created its signature event, the Penguins Alumni Charity Golf Classic, to benefit local children’s charities and the Penguins Alumni Scholarship program. The event has donated over $430,000 to charitable organizations with an emphasis on serving children. Benefactors include the Pittsburgh Sled Hockey Team, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Heart Camp, ACHIEVA, Pennies from Heaven, Life Steps, Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and the Mario : : Sidney Crosby enjoyed a day on the links during the team’s annual Summer Sticks Golf Classic.
