THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins host the Carolina Hurricanes, the team that provided the opposition for the final home game of the 2013 regular season last April 27, an 8-3 Pittsburgh victory in which James Neal recorded a hat trick and Jussi Jokinen added two goals. The Penguins are 5-1-0 in their last six games overall against Carolina and have won five straight home games against the Hurricanes . The only teams against which Pittsburgh has longer current home winning streaks are Florida (8) and Tampa Bay (6) . . . The Hurricanes’ last win here came on March 20, 2010 at the Civic Arena when Jamie McBain’s goal at 4:59 of overtime earned Carolina a 3-2 victory . . . Pittsburgh had been in a major power-play slump against Carolina, going 1-for-20 (5 .0 percent) over the previous seven games, before converting two of three chances in that season finale last April . . . Carolina has gone six straight games here in Pittsburgh without a power-play goal (0-for-21) . The last Hurricane to score a power-play goal here was current Penguins’ forward Jussi Jokinen, who beat Marc-Andre Fleury in the opening period of a 3-2 Carolina victory on Dec . 7, 2009 . . . Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis joined Neal in recording a team-leading four points in the series against the Hurricanes last season, while Eric Staal led Carolina with one goal and six points . Sidney Crosby has missed eight of the last 10 games against Carolina and hasn’t scored a goal against the Canes since Nov . 19, 2010 in a 5-4 home shootout victory in which he had four points . . . Malkin has points in each of his last nine games against Carolina (4-10-14) since being blanked by them Dec . 7, 2009 . . . The Penguins are 59-50-11-5 all-time against the Hartford/ Carolina franchise, including a mark of 32-22-6-1 here at home . The next game between the teams is Oct . 28 in Carolina, while their next meeting here is April 1 . THE PENGUINS

This game concludes the Penguins’ three-game homestand to open the season, and after two days off they will play in Florida on Friday and Tampa Bay on Saturday . Pittsburgh returns home one week from tonight to host Edmonton in the Oilers’ first game here since March 13, 2011 . . . The Penguins opened the season here last Thursday against New Jersey and hosted Buffalo on Saturday . . . Defenseman Olli Maatta made the Pittsburgh roster to start the season, the first Pittsburgh player with junior eligibility to do so since Jordan Staal and Kris Letang did it in October, 2006. Staal played the entire season with the Penguins, while Letang played seven games at the start of the 2006-07 season before returning to his junior team in Val-d’Or . Maatta cannot play this season in the AHL but must either stay in the NHL or be returned to his junior team in London, Ont . The Penguins’ first-round 2012 pick, taken 22nd overall out of Finland, can play up to nine NHL games this season without losing the first year of his contract . . . Pittsburgh continued on page 8

COMMUNITY UPDATE PENGUINS ALUMNI CONTINUE TRADITION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Over 30 former Pittsburgh Penguins coaches and players joined ranks in Pittsburgh on August 27 to raise money for charity when the Penguins Alumni Association hosted its 16th annual Penguins Alumni Charity Golf Classic presented by 84 Lumber at Valley Brook Country Club . Proceeds from the alumniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature event benefitted ACHIEVA, Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation, the Mario Lemieux Foundation and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation . Players representing each decade of Penguins history participated in the two-day event . Since 1998, the Penguins Alumni Association has raised over $460,000 for local charities from this tournament . continued on page 26

The Alumni Association hosts three major fundraisers each year . In addition to the Alumni Charity Golf Classic presented by 84 Lumber, the Association also holds a Skate with the Greats open skating session each winter and a Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tournament each spring . The skate and poker tournament both raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research . Penguins’ alumni members have provided a valuable assist to the Penguins organization by serving as ambassadors for the sport in our region . MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER

Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburghâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair. 38

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fifth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 37, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. His avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. Bylsma has led the Penguins to three 100-point seasons and five consecutive playoff berths, while becoming the winningest playoff coach in team history with 36 postseason victories and seven playoff series victories. continued on page 45

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2003 Western Conference championship team. TONY GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH

Tony Granato is in his fifth season on the Penguins coaching staff. Granato will also serve as assistant coach under head coach Dan Bylsma for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato, 48, spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach (2002-04 and 2008-09). Granato led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 NHL seasons with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (90-96) and San Jose (96-01). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Granato played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hall of Fame in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National Team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH

Todd Reirden is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Reirden, 41, joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup. In his only full season as head coach in WBS in 2009-10, Reirden led the team to a 41-34-2-3 mark and a playoff berth. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater — the Bowling Green Falcons. Reirden played 13 professional seasons, appearing in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son, Travis, and reside in the North Hills. JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin is in his first season on the Penguins coaching staff. Martin, 61, has spent nearly 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95). Martin was an associate coach on the 2002 Canadian Olympic squad that won a gold medal in Salt Lake City. Martin was a Jack Adams Award recipient as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1998-99, and was a finalist on three other occasions. Also as head coach of the Florida Panthers, Martin worked a dual role as general manager from 2006-08. Martinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks 10th all-time in wins and seventh all-time in games coached in NHL history. Martin played college hockey at St. Lawrence University. Jacques has two daughters.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his first season as Pittsburgh’s goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the club’s goaltender development coach. Under Bale’s tutelage during the 2012-13 season, goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins combined to allow the fewest goals (178) in the American Hockey League (AHL). Zatkoff’s 1.93 goals-against average was the lowest in the AHL. Bales, who hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the National Hockey League with Boston and Ottawa. Bales, who was originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, also saw action in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University from 1989-92. Mike and his wife, Melanie, have three children, William, Alexander and Alexa. Travis Williams is in his third season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Previously, he had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

DAVID PEART SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, SALES

David Peart is in his third full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports helping, the team to be consistently ranked among the top sports teams in Fan Relations, according to ESPN the Magazine. Peart has a wide range of sports management experience, having held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

BUILDING INFORMATION ALCOHOL Guests of CONSOL Energy Center must be 21 years of age or older to purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages. BAGS, BACKPACKS AND PURSES For security purposes, only small personal bags (purses, baby or diaper bags, etc.) will be permitted inside CONSOL Energy Center and all items are subject to search upon entrance. Large bags, coolers, backpacks and sealed packages, including gifts for performers and/or athletes of any kind are not permitted unless otherwise noted on the individual event page.

BANNERS AND SIGNS Banners and signs are permitted for most events, providing they are appropriate, as deemed by building management. Signs must not be commercial in nature or utilize wood, metal or other types of objects for support. They cannot be hung or fastened anywhere in the building or in any way obstruct another guest’s view or building signage.

DOORS OPEN Doors generally open one (1) hour prior to the start of an event at CONSOL Energy Center, including Pittsburgh Penguins games. Please check the individual event page for further information. CONSOL Energy Center has a no re-entry policy; once you leave the building during an event, you will not be permitted to return.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION In the event of an emergency, CONSOL Energy Center staff will utilize the public address (PA) system

to inform guests of the situation and any instructions as applicable. All exits and emergency exits are posted with appropriate signage.

ENTRANCES AND EXITS There are four (4) points of entry into CONSOL Energy Center: American Eagle Gate (Fifth Avenue and Washington Place), Trib Total Media Gate (Centre Avenue Lower Entrance), Verizon Gate (Centre Avenue Upper Entrance), and a private parking garage entrance for suite ticket holders.

FAMILY RESTROOMS Family restrooms are available on all levels of CONSOL Energy Center near sections 106/107, 108, 115, 121, 213, 225, party suite 44 and suite 13.

FIRST AID There are two (2) UPMC First Aid Stations, one on each level of CONSOL Energy Center. UPMC First Aid is located adjacent to the Guest Services office outside section 104 and behind the concession stand at section 232.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES No food or beverages of any kind are permitted to be brought into CONSOL Energy Center. After a memorable rookie season, Beau Bennett is expected to play a greater role in the Penguins’ lineup this season. But the second-year forward is content with filling any role, as long as it means he is part of the 23-man roster. Bennett began last season with Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, before making his NHL debut against the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 15. The 21-year-old’s skill was evident early, but he failed to score a point in his first five games. That quickly changed, as he was held scoreless in just nine of his remaining 21 games played, earning 14 points (3G-11A) in 26 total regular-season games played. Coach Dan Bylsma said he thinks Bennett continued his progression throughout the offseason and training camp, and believes he is prepared to take on a more prominent role this season. “We saw him in several different roles for our team, as high as second line last year, played on the fourth line last year. Also, on the power play, we saw him in that role at times,” Bylsma said. “So, he played in a lot of different areas and showed a lot of things. I think Beau is going to be a guy who really has an opportunity to step forward and make a big impact.” His performance with the Penguins, along with his two AHL stints, last season garnered consideration to play alongside Evgeni Malkin and James Neal at the start of this season. While he might split time at that position with Jussi Jokinen, who recorded a continued on page 112

natural hat trick while playing with Malkin and Neal in a preseason game, the young forward is excited to begin the season as a part of the main roster for the first time in his career. “I just want to make the team,” Bennett said during training camp. “Wherever coach wants to put me after that is fine with me. I felt like I grew a lot as a player and I can be a little more versatile this year and it’s something that’s a work in progress.” His offensive skill has always been Bennett’s strength, which was evident in the Penguins’ first playoff game last year. Early in the game, he blazed past the New York Islanders’ defensemen and sniped a shot into the upper-left corner of the Islanders’ net, creating a buzz throughout CONSOL Energy Center. But that was his only point of the playoffs, mostly due to his inability to physically compete in playoff-style hockey. “Sunshine,” as his teammates refer to him, spent a bulk of the offseason trying to rectify that and thinks he is a well-rounded player now. He focused on putting more muscle onto his 6-foot-2 frame and now weighs in at 207 pounds, about 30 pounds more than he weighed when the Penguins drafted him 20th overall in 2010. “I feel like I grew as a player and I’m more versatile,” Bennett said. “I think defensively, I grew as a player. It started in Wilkes-Barre then worked its way up to here. In college, I really didn’t focus too much on that part of my game and I think it’s grown over the past year.” The Penguins assigned Bennett to the East Coast Hockey League’s Wheeling Nailers on Sept. 30 in order to become cap-compliant, before recalling him two days later. After his two-day hiatus in the ECHL, the California-native fulfilled his dream and was named to an NHL opening-day roster for the first time in his career.

2013.14 ICE CREW As the Pittsburgh Penguins entered a new era at CONSOL Energy Center, the team also introduced a skating Ice Crew for the 2010-11 season. Putting the snow removal crew on skates added a new level of speed and excitement to the Penguinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; game presentation. The unique co-ed squad includes hockey players, figure skaters and speed skaters. The Ice Crew removes excess snow on the ice during TV timeouts, interacts with fans, executes intermission games and participates in community and charity events throughout the season. The Ice Crew continues to grow and will once again take the ice at CONSOL Energy Center this season. On Saturday, July 20 the Penguins announced the 2013-14 Penguins Ice Crew. The three day audition process consisted of several on ice drills and individual interviews. Of the 107 applicants only 23 were selected to represent the Penguins for the 2013-14 season. Craig Adams, the Penguins’ union representative, started having a good season before the puck even dropped for the 2013-14 campaign. Last year, Adams was mired in the NHL lockout. This season, he just gets to play hockey. “It’s definitely one less thing to worry about,” said the 36-yearold forward. “The summer didn’t extend beyond when it should. “It wasn’t a distraction for me once the season started last year. I was fortunate enough — or unfortunate enough — to go through the [2004-05] lockout, so I understood what the process entailed. “Everyone was just excited to get back playing, and there were certainly no hard feelings within our organization.” Adams played a big hand in that. He did yeoman’s work keeping his teammates and the Pittsburgh media abreast of lockout happenings. Adams just gets things done. He’s a fourth-liner, but the Harvard University product is the type of player every team wants and none can do without. Adams came to Pittsburgh from Chicago on March 4, 2009, playing a role in the Penguins' Stanley Cup run that spring. He’s been a Penguin ever since. “It was a tough time for me,” said Adams, recalling his 71-game stint with the Blackhawks. “I’d had a pretty good stretch in Carolina. I had a home there and won a Stanley Cup continued on page 123

there [in 2006]. Sometimes you think things won’t change. “But I ended up in Chicago, and it wasn’t a great situation for me. I didn’t have a lot of success on the ice. I was just hoping to get a chance somewhere, a chance to play and contribute. To keep my career going. “I came to Pittsburgh and obviously, we know how things turned out that spring. It was good timing and good luck for me.” The Penguins didn’t have as much luck in the 2013 playoffs, losing four straight games to Boston in the Eastern Conference Final. The Penguins scored just twice during the series. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin got shut out. “Boston was a good team, but we had a good team, too,” Adams said. “If you’d told me at any point during the season that our downfall would be not being able to score enough goals, I’d have said you were crazy. “It wasn’t a series anyone expected. We certainly made some mistakes. Game Two [a 6-1 Penguins loss] was a game we look back on and regret we didn’t play well enough. But otherwise, it was a series between two evenlymatched teams and we couldn’t find a way to score goals. continued on page 125

“I don’t know how many posts we hit. In games that are 2-1 and 1-0, if a couple of those pucks go in, they change games. They change series. But certainly we didn’t deserve to win. They won four in a row.” Adams is very wellconditioned. He played in each of the Penguins’ 48 regular-season games in 2012-13, posting three goals and six assists. He played in each of the Penguins’ 15 post-season games, notching one assist. Adams made his NHL debut with Carolina in 2000-01. Adams' first game this season will be his 800th in the league. One of the primary concerns for the 6-foot, 200-pound Adams is the penalty-kill. The Penguins’ penalty-killing was disappointing during the regular season, finishing 25th in the NHL with a success rate of 79.6 percent. But the PK rallied in the playoffs, finishing second in the NHL by executing 92.3 percent of the time. The Penguins’ PK will break in some new personnel this season. The most significant loss may be Matt Cooke, who left via free agency. “Obviously, we struggled [on the PK] during the season,” Adams said. “That’s something we hadn’t dealt with in a while. Our numbers were worse than we felt we were. But we did really well in the playoffs. That was more in line with where we should be in terms of personnel and experience.” As for Cooke’s departure, Adams said, “Losing Matt is going to be a big loss. He’s a really good penalty-killer with lots of experience. I’m not sure who’s going to take those minutes. For hockey players 10 years and under, Pittsburgh leads the country with a 120% growth rate in participation which can be attributed with the emergence of the “Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey” program over the past five years. In other words, Pittsburgh has accounted for 15% of the growth in youth hockey in the United States. This program has provided the necessary equipment, FREE, to 1,000 local children on an annual basis, as well as provide on-ice instructional clinics to the children involved which have both aided in this growth. The 2013-2014 season will be the sixth consecutive season for the Little Penguins program which continues to grow in enrollment and popularity. This season, twenty-six instructional programs will be held at twenty-three area rinks, including four girls-only locations. Since it began in 2008-2009, over 4,200 children aged 4-8 have received free head-to-toe hockey equipment to all registered participants. PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

Steve Kolbe enters his first season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kolbe spent 14 seasons (1997-2011) as the playby-play broadcaster for the Washington Capitals, broadcasting over 1100 games. His voice has been heard internationally on the NHL Network, XM Radio, NHL Radio, and ESPN. Kolbe broadcast the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998 and the NHL Winter Classic in 2011, and he was featured on the NHL Network’s documentary “Voices” in 2008. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Kolbe has over 25 years of broadcasting experience, and most recently has been a co-host of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network) as well as talk show host for Major League Baseball coverage and NHL insider on CBS Radio 105.7 in Baltimore. Kolbe is a 1989 graduate of Michigan State University and earned a B.A. in telecommunications.

Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

NHL STADIUM SERIES The Penguins will once again take it to the great outdoors, playing in Chicago’s Soldier Field as part of the new NHL Stadium Series on March 1, 2014. The Stadium Series will consist of four outdoor games: two in New York’s Yankee Stadium, one at Dodger Stadium in L.A., and the Penguins vs Blackhawks in Chicago. This will be the third outdoor game in Penguins franchise history. Orpik, Letang, Malkin and Crosby have played in all three.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. THE GAME CHANGES COME FEBRUARY BY: MIKE PRISUTA

Dan Bylsma has never done what he’s about to do in February but he’s envisioned it all along. “I did think about it before, you know, being a USA guy, going into 2010 and somewhere down the road hoping it would be the case for me to be the Olympic coach,” Bylsma has acknowledged. “I did look down the [locker] room in the middle seeing Sidney [Crosby] and Evgeni [Malkin] and know that they were going to go off and put on different colors than Team USA. “When we watched the 2010 Olympics I was certainly not cheering for Sid in the red and white and ‘Geno’ in his colors. I was cheering for Team USA and Brooks Orpik and our guys.” When he referenced “our guys,” Bylsma meant fellow Americans rather than fellow Penguins. That dynamic temporarily pitting players and coaches that call CONSOL Energy Center home against one another is a lot more real this season now that Bylsma has made it “down the road” and is positioned to lead Team USA in February in Sochi, Russia. Team USA’s latest Olympic contingent will also include Penguins general manager Ray Shero [associate general manager], assistant coach Tony Granato [assistant coach] and video coordinator Andy Saucier [video coordinator]. Although rosters have yet to be finalized, Orpik and fellow Penguins defenseman Paul Martin are candidates to represent continued on page 196

their country, as are Penguins teammates Crosby [Canada], Malkin [Russia] and Jussi Jokinen [Finland], to name a few. They’ll go into battle together… right up until it becomes time to begin battling against one another. “I have it a little bit in the back of my mind now,” Bylsma said. “I’ve already given it thought. I know when it gets closer and closer you’re going to be looking at Sidney in the black and gold and thinking in a week’s time or in a few days time you’re going to be ready to go up against him. We get Evgeni in the pool play. We get the Russians in the second game. “I’m already looking down the road to competing against ‘Geno’ on the other side of it. It has some dynamic that will be in the back of your mind.” Bylsma will perceive and approach NHL opponents with the same dynamic in play, at least until the NHL’s Olympic break in February. During Saturday’s hosting of Buffalo, for example, Bylsma viewed Ryan Miller as a goaltender the Penguins needed to beat and, potentially, as Team USA’s Olympic goaltender. Miller served in that latter capacity in 2010 and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. “You certainly will be watching the games a little bit differently knowing some of the players you’ll be playing against could possibly be candidates for Team USA,” Bylsma acknowledged. “There will be a continued on page 199

little bit of a different focus, I think. When you’re watching the game you’re also scouting a player for the potential of being on Team USA. “That will be a little bit different but I don’t think that’s far off of what we normally do when we’re evaluating the game.” In addition to preparing the Penguins for the season that began on Thursday night, Bylsma has been formulating a plan of attack for the Olympics. Much of the heavy lifting along those lines was handled before the Penguins opened their training camp in September. “In terms of preparing for the Olympics and getting ready for the international game, the bigger ice surface, the opponents that we’re playing, I would say I hope I’ve done 85 percent of that work to this point and I count on that being the case,” Bylsma said. “I’m ready for a meeting against the Slovaks on Feb. 12. I’m ready for it now. “I don’t have to do any work in that regard and our coaching staff doesn’t in a lot of ways going into the Olympics. But there certainly will be some phone calls and you certainly will be watching the games a little bit differently.” It all should make for a fascinating couple of months leading up to the Olympics, particularly as it relates to Bylsma’s treatment of Crosby, Malkin and others who will potentially stand in Team USA’s way along the way to the gold medal. “If I start benching some of them come February trying to mess with them a little bit you may be able to call me out on that,” Bylsma said laughing. 199

Penguins forward Chris Kunitz was bypassed by all 30 NHL organizations in the 2003 NHL Draft. And to this day, the 33-year old left-winger still uses that memory as a driving force to prove that they made a big mistake. “I just stick to the basics, try not to change things and try to prepare the right way every night,” Kunitz said. Kunitz, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, seems to be preparing exactly the way he should be. In the shortened 48-game season last year, he set a career high in plus-minus rating (plus-30), good enough to rank second in the league. He was only four goals off his career high, 26, which he set during the 82-game 2011-12 season. “Things were really going well last year, but it doesn’t mean it is going to happen again. Dupuis, a group that has solidified themselves with prolific scoring numbers and the ability to shut down any opponent’s top line. The trio consists of three very different types of players, but the roles each play on the line is just as important in ensuring quality results. “We all know what Chris Kunitz can do and he shows that every night,” Dupuis said. “He is the kind of guy that plays hard, plays the game the right way, knows the details and wins the one-on-one battles. He is playing some really good hockey.” Crosby has been skating with Kunitz since he arrived in 2009 via a trade with Anaheim, and he touted Kunitz’s “knack for finding the back of the net.” “I’ve been playing with him for a while and have seen how hard he works day-to-day, what he brings,” Crosby said. “He is a good guy to play with. He brings his best every night and competes really hard. He goes to the tough areas, forechecks and gets to the net.” Crosby and Kunitz, fellow Canadian countrymen, have a chance to represent their home country during the Winter Olympics in February. Both were invited to Team Canada’s Olympic Orientation camp earlier this year, and could potentially be paired up on a line for the Red and White in Sochi, Russia. “Obviously, it’s a huge honor just to be invited to the camp,” Kunitz said. “It continued on page 220

is a great feeling for me and my family, something to be proud of. The whole chance to go to the Olympics and represent your country is the ultimate goal for any Canadian hockey player.” Crosby talked about how few NHL teammates get an opportunity to skate for their home country in international play, let alone on the same line. “That would be pretty exciting,” he said. “Anytime you can represent your country, especially with a linemate, that would be a pretty unique opportunity.” Though Kunitz is focused on the Penguins winning games, he said the opportunity to represent Canada is one that will always be on his mind. After making the jump from undrafted free agent to NHL All-Star in 2013, Kunitz hopes his career can come full circle after being crowned a gold medalist. “It’s something that would be a true honor,” he said. “But there is a lot of time between now and then, a lot of great players that have a chance to go, but if I get asked, it is something I’ll be prepared to do, and I’ll try to go get a gold.” In the Penguins locker room, Kunitz continues to use that drive from Draft Day 2003 in every practice and game as an example for how to lead. “Some guys talk a lot, some guys lead by example, they just have that in them,” Dupuis said. “It is whatever you can bring to help the team. If leadership means doing the right things all the time and leading by example, [Kunitz] is that kind of leader.” 220

REGISTRATION INFORMATION DATE OF REGISTRATION: NOVEMBER 5, 2013 Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are pleased to announce the return of Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program for its sixth season. One thousand Pittsburgh area children will receive FREE head-to-toe hockey equipment this season, thanks to the combined efforts of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins Foundation, Reebok and Dick’s Sporting Goods. More than 4,200 children have already participated since the program’s inception in 2008-09. Boys and girls, ages 4-8, enrolled in the program will be introduced to the game of hockey and receive the following free, brand-new, head-to-toe Reebok SC87 Crosby-endorsed hockey equipment. To be eligible to participate, children must be between the ages of 4-8. Participants in this year’s program must have been born between September 1, 2009 and December 31, 2005. Children who previously participated in the Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey program are not eligible to participate in this season’s program.
