GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE
THE SERIES
This afternoon the Vancouver Canucks make their first appearance in Pittsburgh in almost three years . Their last game here at CONSOL Energy Center was on Nov. 17, 2010, when Sidney Crosby scored in the first period and Max Talbot and Arron Asham added goals 3:21 apart in the second, Talbot scoring short-handed, in a 3-1 victory. Dan Hamhuis had the lone Canucks’ goal against Marc-Andre Fleury, while Roberto Luongo made 26 saves for Vancouver . . . The Canucks had won their previous four games in Pittsburgh before that defeat . . . The last meeting of the teams came in their season opener on Oct . 6, 2011 in Vancouver, where former Canuck Matt Cooke scored twice before Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin beat Luongo in a 4-3 shootout victory . One of Cooke’s goals was short-handed, giving Pittsburgh a short-handed goal in each of its last two games against the Canucks . . . The Penguins have six short-handed goals in their last 21 games against Vancouver . . . The Penguins’ current two-game winning streak against Vancouver is their longest against the Canucks in the last 13 years . Vancouver is 7-1-2 in its last 10 games against Pittsburgh, the only regulation loss coming in the Canucks’ last appearance here . . . The last time the Penguins outshot Vancouver was Jan . 15, 2002 in a 5-2 road loss to the Canucks . . . Vancouver is 1-for-21 on the power play in its last five games continued on page 7

against Pittsburgh . . . The Canucks won eight of their first 48 games in Pittsburgh before putting together that four-game road win streak against the Penguins from Nov . 21, 2001 to Nov . 22, 2008 . . . Malkin’s only goal in five career games against Vancouver came on the road Jan. 16, 2010. . . Crosby has two goals, both at home, in five career games against the Canucks — the only team against which he has never had an assist . Vancouver and Detroit are the only two teams that have held both Crosby and Malkin under a point-per-game average for their careers . . . The Penguins will visit Vancouver on Jan . 7 . . . Pittsburgh is 59-35-11-1 all-time against the Canucks, including 34-12-7-0 at home . THE PENGUINS
Today’s rare October home afternoon date starts a three-game homestand for the Penguins, who host the surprise team of the early NHL season, Colorado, Monday night and the New York Islanders next Friday before playing in Toronto one week from tonight . . . Pittsburgh was off to a 4-1-0 start after splitting its two-game road trip to Florida, falling to the Panthers on Oct . 11, 6-3, and rallying to beat the Lightning, 5-4, the next night . . . This week began with a home game against Edmonton on Tuesday night and a trip to Philadelphia on Thursday night . . . Pittsburgh continued on page 8

thus plays seven of its first 10 games at home this season . . . Rookie Jeff Zatkoff faced 30 shots in his NHL debut against the Panthers. It marked the first time the Penguins had lost their first road game of the season since falling in Carolina (1-4) in 2007 . . . The victory in Tampa was Pittsburgh’s seventh straight over the Lightning, its longest current winning streak against one team and its longest ever against the Lightning . Crosby recorded his eighth career hat trick in that game, and first on the road since recording his first NHL hat trick in Philadelphia on Oct . 28, 2006 . Crosby had four points in the game, vaulting him into the NHL scoring lead . . . Matt Niskanen’s goal with 19 seconds to play won the game — the Penguins’ third power-play goal of the game . . . Deryk Engelland made his season debut in the win over the Lightning . . . That victory in Tampa Bay gave Fleury a four-game win streak to start the season . . . Kris Letang was hoping to return to the lineup earlier this week after being on injured reserve with a lower-body injury .

This is the third game in a sevengame road trip for the Canucks, who started it with games in Philadelphia on Tuesday and Buffalo on Thursday . They will play in Columbus tomorrow and also face the Islanders, Devils and Blues before returning home to play nine of their next 13 games . . . Vancouver’s last home game before the trip was a 4-1 loss to Montreal, their second straight defeat . . . Forwards Jordan Schroeder and Alex Burrows were out of the Vancouver lineup with foot injuries when the trip began . . . Defenseman Jason Garrison had points in five of the Canucks’ first six games (2+4) . . . Twins Daniel (2+5) and Henrik Sedin (1+6) shared the team scoring lead through six games. . . Daniel has three goals and 10 points in 11 career games against the Penguins, while Henrik has three goals and 12 points in 11 games . 8

Jagr’s 18 goals, 37 assists and 55 points at Brodeur’s expense entering the new campaign were more than any other player had managed against the veteran New Jersey netminder (Mike Knuble was second in all-time points against Brodeur heading into 2013-14 with 42) . Jagr landing in New Jersey also united the fifth- and 20th-overall selections of the 1990 Entry Draft .
COYOTES MILESTONE:
Dave Tippett coached his 300th game for Phoenix on Oct . 13 at Carolina . In doing so, Tippett became the third coach in franchise history to reach 300 games with the team (Bob Francis 390, Wayne Gretzky 328) and the seventh active NHL coach to have coached in 300 games with his current team .
BETTER ALREADY:
Carolina forward Jeff Skinner had multi-assist efforts in two of the Hurricanes’ first five games . Skinner had one game last season in which he recorded more than one assist .
A START UNLIKE ANY OTHER: When
Boston’s Bruins’ Chris Kelly scored on a penalty shot against Tampa Bay’s Anders Lindback on Oct . 3, it marked the first time in NHL history that a team’s seasonopening goal was scored on a penalty shot . Kelly’s effort was also the third consecutive successful penalty shot for the Bruins .
NEW LEAFS:
Trevor Smith became the 900th player to appear in at least one game for Toronto (playoffs included) when he made his Maple Leafs debut on Oct . 8 . In addition to Smith, fellow forwards Spencer Abbout, Troy Bodie, Dave Bolland, David Broll, Jamie Devane, Josh Leivo and Mason Raymond, defensemen Paul Ranger and Morgan Rielly, and goaltender Jonathan Bernier made their Maple Leafs debts in this season’s first five games
DUCK DYNASTY:
Forward Jakob Silfverberg scored four goals in his first four games with Anaheim, making him the third player in the franchise’s 20-year history to do so (Teemu Selanne in 1996, Daniel Winnik in 2013) .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

The Grand Haven, Mich. native will be Team USA’s head coach at the 2014 Winter Olympics Games in Sochi, Russia. continued from page 43
Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. He plans to use his experience coaching superstars Sidney Crosby continued on page 65

and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

JOIN THE RUSH! Introduced in the mid 1990’s, the American Eagle Student Rush Program is one of the most popular and well known marketing initiatives of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Designed to sell remaining game-day inventory, the American Eagle Student Rush program provides the Pittsburgh Penguins an opportunity to introduce new fans to the game of hockey at a discounted rate. During the 2013-14 season, at least 200 American Eagle Student Rush tickets will be made available for each regular season home game at CONSOL Energy Center. To avoid long waits outside during the winter months, the organization will host online pre-sales for most games. TWITTER Q&A
OLLI MAATTA @LEAHHCHOCOLAS If you weren’t playing hockey, what would you be doing instead? #AskMaatta “I think I would be a firefighter, or doing something hands-on like a cop. I don’t really like sitting in an office and doing nothing or just writing something, that’s not my kind of job.” @TMELLIOS13 Do you mold your game after a current player or retired NHL player or do you prefer to be your own type of player? #AskMaatta “When I grew up, I always watched Nicklas Lidstrom. It would be awesome if I could be as awesome of a player as he is but I don’t think that is even possible. He was such a great player and one I definitely looked up to.” @THATPENSCHICK Did you have an NHL team that you grew up cheering for? #AskMaatta “No, I didn’t have a team but I liked to watch the Finnish players [Teemu] Selanne, Teppo Numminen. Those guys were my idols and I loved to watch them play. So Anaheim, Buffalo were a couple of teams I watched.” @SYDJOHNSTON99 Who inspired you to get where you are today? #AskMaatta “My family. My brothers. And my close friends from back home that I grew up playing with that are playing in the Finnish Elite League right now so I really appreciated being around those guys I grew up with.”
@DBRAMMELLJR What is your favorite food? #AskMaatta “I like my mushroom soup, made in London. It’s bacon, mushroom, potatoes. I wish I knew the recipe for that but I don’t think I’d be able to do it myself.” 97

USSI JOKINE
PENGUINS PROFILE:
JUSSI JOKINEN BY: MARK MADDEN
When training camp opened, there was speculation that Jussi Jokinen wouldn’t be among the Penguins’ top six forwards. That he’d be used in a third-line role. But, when the season started, Jokinen was playing left wing on Evgeni Malkin’s line. And set about proving decisively that he belongs there. Jokinen got a hat trick in the Penguins’ third game, a 5-2 home win over Carolina. The 5-foot-11 Finn displayed excellent chemistry with Malkin, who assisted Jokinen on what proved to be the game-winning goal 5:03 into the third period. When asked if he expected to be in the top six, Jokinen replied, “That was my goal. I’m most comfortable playing top six. Playing some offensive role, and playing with good players. So that was my goal coming into training camp.” Jokinen, 30, has certainly displayed top-six skill during his previous eight NHL seasons, racking up 357 points in 579 games. His best season was 2009-10, when he registered 30 goals and 35 assists with Carolina. Jokinen made a big impression in Pittsburgh after joining the Penguins at last season’s trade deadline, getting 11 points in 10 regular-season games. His outburst vs. Carolina gave Jokinen 10 goals in his first 13 regular-season games as a Penguin. continued on page 123

“[Jokinen has] got an ability to play off players and read off them and it showed,” Coach Dan Bylsma said after the win over Carolina. “He was excellent.” After the season’s first five games, Jokinen had three goals and two assists. Both helpers came in a 5-4 Penguins victory at Tampa Bay Oct. 12.
Jokinen is one of the NHL’s top shootout specialists. As of Oct. 11, he ranked third in league history with 31 shootout goals. His career conversion percentage is 46.3. Jokinen played for Carolina from 2009-13. He’s not bitter about the ‘Canes swapping him to Pittsburgh last season. But he still enjoyed his hat trick. “There’s always extra motivation when you play your former team,” Jokinen said. “I probably could have had five goals. I hit the post and the crossbar, too. If I’m playing with world-class players and they are giving me the puck, I just need to remember to shoot.” “I have lots of respect for [Carolina]. I was there four-and-a-half years. I really enjoyed my time there. They take care of the players and families. Everything in the last year wasn’t fair, but that’s hockey. It’s not always fair.” Not only was Jokinen skating on Malkin’s line to open the season, he saw power-play time, too. Two of his goals against Carolina were scored with the man-advantage; the first of those was assisted by Sidney Crosby. The Penguins’ power play was two-for-three against the Hurricanes. “It’s so much fun,” Jokinen said. “You try to enjoy every moment and work hard in practice and games. continued on page 125

“I’ve got some good chemistry going with the power play, and playing with Geno, too. I’m having lots of fun.” Jokinen’s second goal vs. Carolina came off a beautiful dish by Malkin — an angled, slide-rule pass that played Jokinen behind Carolina’s defense. “He’s been getting me opportunities, and I’ve been a little bit mad at myself that I haven’t scored on his passes,” Jokinen said. “Finally, I got [that] one. I hope I can score more goals from him passing. He’s so crafty with the puck.” Jokinen got the first star against Carolina. The No. 2 star was a fellow Finn, rookie defenseman Olli Maatta. Maatta had two assists and was plus-1. “I’ve been trying to help [Maatta] as much as possible. Look after him,” Jokinen said. “But he doesn’t need any help. He’s so good. He’s so mature for 19-years-old. It’s been fun to watch him play.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

For hockey players 10 years and under, Pittsburgh leads the country with a 120% growth rate in participation which can be attributed with the emergence of the “Little Penguins Learn to Play Hockey” program over the past five years. In other words, Pittsburgh has accounted for 15% of the growth in youth hockey in the United States. This program has provided the necessary equipment, FREE, to 1,000 local children on an annual basis, as well as provide on-ice instructional clinics to the children involved which have both aided in this growth. The 2013-2014 season will be the sixth consecutive season for the Little Penguins program which continues to grow in enrollment and popularity. This season, twenty-six instructional programs will be held at twenty-three area rinks, including four girls-only locations. Since it began in 2008-2009, over 4,200 children aged 4-8 have received free head-to-toe hockey equipment to all registered participants. This season, an additional 1,000 children will learn the game and be equipped properly to do so in this one of a kind opportunity. “We were both excited and amazed by the reaction to the Little Penguins program in previous seasons, and we’re happy to be able to offer the program again for another year,” Sidney Crosby said. “The goal is to continue to create opportunities for more kids in the Pittsburgh are to take up hockey. Penguins program, they can receive head-to-toe hockey gear and learn the game in a fun and organized way.” Thanks to The Pittsburgh Penguins, Dicks Sporting Goods, Reebok, the Penguins Foundation and Sidney Crosby - all participants receive full sets of Reebok SC87 equipment, including skates, stick, helmet, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, an equipment bag, as well as an official Little Penguins Jersey and helmet stickers. This program through its popularity is beginning to be emulated from other NHL teams to incorporate in their respective cities. With five extremely successful seasons, the program sells out quickly. The pre-registration period, parents may view information regarding the rinks, starting dates, number of sessions and times of instructional sessions which are listed on the Penguins website. For participant convenience, registration will occur online at pittsburghpenguins.com. “We are extremely excited that we can continue the success of the Little Penguins program for a 5th consecutive year,” said Penguins Executive Director of Strategic Planning Rich Hixon. “One of the goals of this program is to not only get kids to start playing the game but to keep them playing for a lifetime. Currently, our conversion rates are nearly 50% of all participants who continue to play hockey well after this program. To provide children with head-to-toe hockey gear year after year is nothing short of a tribute to the generosity and character of not only Sidney Crosby, but to the efforts of Reebok, Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Penguins Foundation.“ 128

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 143

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. NHL REALIGNMENT By: Michelle Crechiolo
Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…
In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.
The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.
And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION
The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164
teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS
Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

YOUTH HOCKEY POINTERS FROM COACH SKATE, SKATE, SKATE
No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING
Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”
GET TO THE NET
Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN
We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 192

PENGUINS DISPLAY GRASP OF WHAT THEY’RE AFTER FOR OPENERS BY: MIKE PRISUTA
Maybe they were still stinging from the manner in which last season had ended. Maybe they took the ice this season more determined than ever to become a difficult team to score against. Maybe the Devils made them do it. Whatever the reason, the Penguins opened 2013-14 playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played. Not from an execution standpoint, necessarily; that’ll take some time. But in terms of playing their systems and playing their positions individually and collectively, the Penguins hit the ground running on Oct. 3 against the New Jersey Devils. “Playing against New Jersey as much as we have in the past, they’re going to be a real patient team,” defenseman Brooks Orpik observed after the Penguin s had gotten their regular season rolling with a 3-0 shutout of the Devils on Oct. 3 at CONSOL Energy Center. “You can’ force things against them. You have to be patient yourselves. “It probably wasn’t the prettiest game for us, execution-wise, but I think we did a really good job positionally. We got a lot of good blocked shots. We got a lot of back pressure coming back continued on page 196
195
from the forwards. We didn’t run around in our zone. We stayed tight and the shots we did give up were for the most part from the outside.” Captain Sidney Crosby also invoked the “P-word” in characterizing the Penguins’ effort. “They’re solid and disciplined in the way they play,” Crosby observed of the Devils. “We stayed pretty patient. Our work ethic was right there.” The Penguins aren’t always accused of being patient, nor can they always recognize that element in their play. But for some reason it was for the most part there through season-opening victories over New Jersey, Buffalo and Carolina at CONSOL Energy Center. That patience and the sound, solid manner in which the Penguins regularly deployed themselves on the ice contributed mightily to the Penguins allowing just three goals in their first three games. The occasional off-the-post-off-his-back-off-the-post-againblind-behind-the-back glove save from goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was also a factor. But the Penguins were supporting Fleury through those first three games much more than they were leaving him out to dry. In the event they get off track at some juncture there will be video evidence aplenty available for the Penguins to reference regarding what they’re after. It started against New Jersey, a game in which the Penguins set a tone for how they intended to go about the business of winning games this season. “Positionally, defensively, I thought we were good throughout the game,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “I thought the six defensemen played real solid in the defensive zone, made several solid plays. And positionally our team was for the most part good throughout the game. “I love the way our team played defensively. I love what our defensemen did. continued on page 199

“I’m probably going to estimate that would be a scoring-chance game under 12 [allowed],” Bylsma continued. “At the end there were probably three or four [scoring chances] that Marc had to make big saves on. But we minimized it with how we played defensively.” The goal, as outlined by the Penguins’ coaching staff, is to hold opponents under 12 scoring chances a game. The Penguins’ season-opening, three-game winning streak also included plenty of blocked shots, the limiting, by and large, of shots against, the out-hitting of three consecutive opponents, disciplined overall play (six short-handed situations), perfect penalty killing (6-for-6), strong third periods and examples of the quick transitioning from defense to offense that the Penguins intend to rely upon this season. So there was a great deal to like about 3-0-0 and the manner in which it had been achieved. As the season continues puck possession and puck management will remain all-important objectives. When they’re at their best the Penguins will endeavor to play the game mostly in the opponent’s end, to “play defense with the puck, so to speak, in the offensive zone,” Bylsma said. That’ll come, hopefully, as the timing and execution sharpen during the course of the campaign. But the Penguins’ first three games nonetheless made a statement regarding their diligence, their attention to detail and their ability to produce results when at a capacity that falls short of their collective, explosive best. And that’s not bad, for openers. “It’s going to take time to improve and keep getting better,” Crosby acknowledged after the Devils encounter. “It’s going to be a process. “But I thought we worked really hard.” That’s not to be underrated in assessing what got the 2013-14 Penguins off and running. 199

THE FINNISH CONNECTION BY: DAVE UHRMACHER
When Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta found out he would be playing in the team’s regular-season opener on Oct. 3, like any 19-year old rookie making his NHL debut, nerves began to set in. Luckily for Finland native Maatta, teammate and countryman Jussi Jokinen was there to calm his nerves. “Before [that] night’s game, he told me to enjoy it because you don’t have another first game,” Maatta said. Those words of wisdom from Jokinen, 30, are just a small glimpse into the mentoring the veteran Finnish winger has done for the teenaged Maatta to help him acclimate to life as a professional in both the NHL and Pittsburgh. “First of all you need to remember he is 19-years-old,” Jokinen said. “It is pretty remarkable how good he is by 19, how mature he is. Obviously when I got to camp I wanted to make sure I got him to be as comfortable as possible. I watched him the first couple of weeks, and he didn’t need much advice. I just told him to enjoying playing your game and that is going to be good in this league.”
218
Eight years before Jyvasklya native Maatta cracked the openingnight lineup, Jokinen made a similar journey to North America from a city three hours north called Kalajoki — joining the Dallas Stars for the 2005-06 season after playing professionally in Finland for years. Jokinen said the transition Maatta made from Finland to London, Ontario at age 16 to become a member of the OHL’s London Knights has allowed OLLI MAATTA him to become more accustomed to the culture, and faster. “I was 22-years-old when I got over here, and you need to remember he was 16 when he got to London,” Jokinen said. “He has been there two years and I think you can see the difference right away. If he was 19-years-old coming right to North America there would be lots of new things, but he has been here two years already and is really comfortable with the language and all the other things. It’s been fun to watch and he is a great player, and an even better guy off the ice.” Maatta had visited Pittsburgh twice for the Penguins annual prospect development camp in July prior to training camp this year, but he said no one has helped him get used to the Penguins system more than Jokinen. “He has been a big part of helping me get used to the system on the ice and then helping me get used to the style of living here,” Maatta said. “He is helping me a lot with what is going on, with rules and just how to live here. He has been a big help.” And for Jokinen, it’s been nice having someone around who speaks his native language. “It's fun to be one of the countrymen continued on page 220
219
continued from page 219
on the team, he can speak some Finnish and stuff like that,” he smiled. With the Finnish connection between the two players, it was only fitting that Maatta recorded his first NHL point, an assist, on Jokinen’s second goal in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win over Carolina at CONSOL Energy Center on Oct. 8. “It was a pretty easy point for me,” smiled Maatta, who skated on the third pairing with Robert Bortuzzo. “I just gave the puck to the forwards and they did the rest. You don’t really think about it during the game, but now it starts to sink in my mind that it’s pretty big. It’s great. I love it.” That moment in itself may have been enough for Maatta, but he wasn’t done there. Maatta followed that up with another helper on Jokinen’s third goal, and his two-point effort earned him Second Star honors. The teenager got to skate out in front of the home crowd and raise his stick to them as they cheered, a feeling a happily overwhelmed Maatta will likely never forget. “It’s awesome,” Maatta said. “It feels awesome to get that out of the way. It’s something really big I’ve always dreamed of, putting up points in the NHL.” Jokinen was thrilled for Maatta that night, saying, “He's so good, so mature for being a 19-year-old. He's been fun to watch." Whether or not Maatta remains on the roster after his ninegame window or is sent back to his junior team for the rest of the season remains to be seen. Regardless, his fellow countryman has been impressed with what he has seen thus far. “He has been great,” Jokinen said. “And I think he is only going to get better every day.” 220
