GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE

THE SERIES

Tonight the Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers meet for the second time this season, their first game here at CONSOL Energy Center . Back on Oct. 17 in Philadelphia, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had one goal and one assist and MarcAndre Fleury made 24 saves in a 4-1 Pittsburgh victory. It was the Penguins’ third straight win over the Flyers, and their fifth in the last six games against them . . . The last time Pittsburgh won four straight games over Philadelphia was during an eight-game winning streak from Oct . 5, 2006 through March 4, 2007 . . . The most recent meeting between the teams here in Pittsburgh was last March 24, when Crosby’s powerplay goal with 6:14 to play tied the game and Tyler Kennedy’s overtime goal at 2:33 won it, 2-1 . . . Their victory last month in Philadelphia marked the first time in seven games the Penguins failed to produce a power-play goal against the Flyers, as they were 8-for-25 (32 .0 percent) over the previous six games before going 0-for-4 in that game . . . Philadelphia has also had great power play success against Pittsburgh recently, producing a power-play goal in 11 of the last 12 games against Pittsburgh (12-for-53, 22 .6 percent) . The Flyers have a power-play goal in eight straight regular-season games here in Pittsburgh (8-for-33, 24 .2 percent), their longest such streak ever, and continued on page 7

12 of the last 13 games here (14-for-56, 25.0 percent). . . The Penguins have lost six of their last eight regular-season home games against the Flyers . . . Pittsburgh is 1-5 the last six times it scored first in a regularseason home game against Philadelphia. . . The Metropolitan Division rivals do not play again until a home-and-home series that begins in Philadelphia on March 15 and concludes the next night here. . . The Penguins are 92-137-30-5 all-time against Philadelphia, including a 60-50-22-0 mark at home. THE PENGUINS

Pittsburgh has had three days off since a game in St. Louis against the Blues last Saturday, but this begins a stretch of three games in four days. The Penguins will host Nashville on Friday night and play in New Jersey against the Devils on Saturday. . . Pittsburgh has played only two games in the past 10 days. Prior to facing the Blues, the Penguins lost in New York to the Rangers, 5-1, one week ago tonight. Kris Letang scored the lone goal of the game for the Penguins. . . Crosby has 29 goals and 73 points in 44 career games against Philadelphia, including 15 goals and 38 points in 22 games against them here in Pittsburgh. He has points in 10 of his last 11 home games against the Flyers (7+11). . . Malkin has 22 goals and 57 points in 40 career games against the Flyers, including nine goals and 27 points in 18 games here. Malkin also has points in 10 of his last 11 home games against Philadelphia (4+15). . . Winger Beau Bennett returned to practice with the Penguins last week and was hoping for a possible return to the lineup against the Blues. After Pittsburgh’s loss in New York, Bennett had missed 10 games. . . continued on page 8

Marc-Andre Fleury was named the NHL’s No . Two star for the week ending Nov . 2, with a 3-0-0 record, 1 .67 goals-against average and .940 save percentage . Fleury, the first goaltender to reach 10 wins this season, sported a 1 .83 goals-against average and .929 save percentage before facing the Rangers . . . Jeff Zatkoff made some history with a 19-save, 3-0 shutout over Columbus Nov. 2, completing a home-and-home sweep of the Blue Jackets. Zatkoff became the first goaltender in Penguins’ history to record a shutout while earning his first NHL win.

The Flyers played last night in Ottawa and will travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets on Friday night before returning home to host Ottawa next Tuesday . . . Philadelphia played in Carolina last Tuesday, a game in which it earned a late 1-0 lead on Scott Hartnell’s first goal of the season but then surrendered a goal to Jordan Staal with 53 seconds left and watched Manny Malhotra’s goal at 2:40 of overtime win it . . . The Flyers hosted New Jersey and Edmonton following that game . . . Former Pittsburgh center Max Talbot was traded to Colorado for forward Steve Downie on Oct . 31, although Downie is out of the Philadelphia lineup with a concussion . . . Former Penguins defenseman Hal Gill made his Flyers’ debut Nov. 2 in a 1-0 road victory over New Jersey. 8

And center Nicklas Backstrom had 11 of his 19 points in second periods (1+10).

STARTING AT THE TOP: Calgary’s Reto Berra made his NHL debut memorable, beating Chicago, 3-2, in overtime in Chicago. In doing so Berra became the sixth goaltender in NHL history to record his first victory over a defending-Stanley Cup champion (the Rangers’ Hal Winkler, the Maple Leafs’ Gerry Cheevers, the Rangers’ Hardy Astrom, the Sabres’ Daren Puppa and the Kings’ Jonathan Bernier, Los Angeles accomplished the feat previously).

COMMUNITY UPDATE As hockey fans, we know the Zebras are a part of the game, but we still love BY ABBEY BRADDOCK to hate them . The truth is, these guys aren’t so bad and in fact they are doing great things all over the National Hockey League (NHL), through Zebras Care . Zebras Care was started by the National Hockey League Official’s Association (NHLOA) in September 2007 . In a quest to bring joy to children across North America and to grow the game of hockey, the program was formed with the hope of providing the opportunity for charitable children’s groups to meet NHLOA members and to attend an NHL game . On October 21, Shane Stouffer, a 17 year-old senior at Kittanning High School and his family had the opportunity to do just that . Contacted by the Pittsburgh Penguins through The Children’s Institute, Shane, his parents, and two siblings had a

chance to see the game from a different perspective; the officials’ . “Everyone at The Children’s Institute knows how much Shane loves hockey,” Susan Stouffer, Shane’s mother, said . “We knew he would love this .” After a quick tour of the CONSOL Energy Center, the Stouffers were ushered into the officials’ locker room at ice level . Referees Ghislain Hebert and Brad Meier, and linesmen Mike Cvik and Scott Driscoll, shared stories with Shane and his family about their more than 50 years combined experience in the NHLOA . “I asked Shane if after meeting the officials and seeing how nice they were if he would still yell at the TV when they made a call against the Penguins,” Susan Stouffer said . “He thought for a minute and said ‘Yeah,’ but that is only because the Penguins are the only team in his heart .” Having the opportunity to meet fans like Shane gives the officials a chance to show them that while being an official is tough, programs like this allow them to give something back . “It’s nice to let a kid, who’s sick, or down on his luck, have a chance to forget about his problems,” Driscoll said . “Even if it’s just a few minutes or half a day or even a whole day, that’s what it’s about .” Getting to see his favorite players zoom around the ice may have been the highlight of Shane’s night, but he also got to make four new friends who showed him that Zebras really do care . 26

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT

David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheim’s 2003 Western Conference championship team. It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. He plans to use his experience coaching superstars Sidney Crosby continued on page 65

and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

TWITTER Q&A

MIKE BALES @HASHTAG_LEA Why did you want to be a part of the Penguins organization? #AskBales “I’ve been a part of the organization for a couple years before I got this job, and I got to know a lot of people in different roles and stuff. You know, this organization is first-class and they do things the right way and it’s particularly something I was looking for. They are always trying to win and that’s something I like to do.” @KATESXO Why is it goalies are always said to be a bit weird? Do you find this to be true? #AskBales “Sometimes there is. I think it kind of stems from back in the day when they started playing without goalie masks. I think you’d have to be a little weird to be out there without a mask on when the idea is to stop pucks. I think for the most part guys are fairly normal but I think it kind of gives you an out if you do something maybe not so smart.” @BABYBLUEEYES505 Being the new Goaltending Coach, how did you approach working with Fleury, Vokoun, & Zatkoff this year? #AskBales “I think the first thing was just getting to know the guys a little bit and know their personalities. Obviously, Zatkoff I knew him from last year but Marc and Vokey I didn’t know, so I had to get to know them in the start and sort of learn how to communicate and how we are going to work together.” @MRTOMYERS Are you superstitious and if so is there anything you’ve worn as a good luck charm? #AskBales “I was a little bit superstitious in a way when I played, nothing ridiculous. I didn’t have any good luck charms that I wore. Depending, sometimes if things are going the right way I might wear the same suit, same tie or something like that. Nothing over the top.” 97

ANNIE

YEARS ON THE TEAM: Four HOMETOWN: Hopewell, PA OCCUPATION: Fitness Entrepreneur, Power Yoga Instructor WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? I enjoy doing almost anything outdoors. My activities range from running with my boxer, Ali, playing tennis, golf, snowboarding, and even skydiving. FAVORITE QUOTE: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world” — Mahatma Gandhi DREAM JOB: Personal Trainer for a hit TV series WHAT DO YOU EAT BEFORE SKATING AT A PENGUINS GAME? Protein Bar WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PENGUINS ICE CREW HIGHLIGHTS? Opening night at the CONSOL Energy Center was unbelievable. To be a part of something so exciting and special was really awesome. I greatly value the friendships that I have made in my seasons on the Ice Crew, and they have become like a second family to me. Also, we have volunteered at many different charity events, each one being unique. My most memorable appearance was to a home for individuals with special needs. To be able to share my afternoon conversing with and just learning each individual’s story was truly amazing.

LLI MAATT

PENGUINS PROFILE:

OLLI MAATTA BY: MARK MADDEN

Olli Maatta is overjoyed to be in the NHL at 19: “It’s so awesome,” he said. Awesome, yes. But the rookie defenseman is not in awe. Consider the Penguins’ 4-3 shootout win over visiting Vancouver on Oct. 19. Maatta tied the game 3-3 with 6:48 left in regulation, netting the rebound of a Chris Kunitz shot for his first NHL goal. Maatta played just under 16 minutes and wasn’t intimidated by the Canucks’ star power as personified by Henrik and Daniel Sedin. “I’ve played against a lot of good players this year, but the Sedins are really good,” Maatta said. “Really smart players. “But you can’t think of that. You’ve got to be aware of them. But you can’t respect them too much. Just be a little more careful.” Once Maatta played nine NHL games, the Penguins faced a big decision. Returning him to Junior ‘A’ would have meant that Maatta wouldn’t burn a year of his entry-level contract. But there was little choice; Maatta earned his NHL spot. “We talked about it in the summer, and [Penguins management] said I’d have a chance to make the team,” Maatta said. When asked why he stuck, Maatta said, “Just the simple game I’ve played. Be a solid defenseman and make a good first pass.” In his first 11 NHL games, Maatta collected a goal and two assists. Perhaps the most impressive part of Maatta’s arsenal is his calm demeanor. continued on page 123

121

continued from page 121

“I feel more comfortable every game, and more confident,” Maatta said. “I just give an easy first pass and play a simple game.” Maatta is quick to point out that playing in NHL is far from easy: “Every game, you’ve got to be at your best," Maatta said. "The speed and tempo of the game is definitely higher. It makes it easier that you have great guys playing with you.” Maatta had quite an accomplished junior career. He helped win the Ontario Hockey League in each of the past two seasons as a member of the London Knights. He represented Finland in the World Junior Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013, becoming the youngest Finn to do so in 2011. Maatta played for former NHLers Dale and Mark Hunter at London. Maatta feels it was the ideal place to develop his talent. “It’s a great organization. I really enjoyed my time there. It really helped,” Maatta said. “We talked every day about going to the NHL. What it takes to make it in the NHL. [The Hunters] pushed you every day to compete hard and get better.” Making Maatta’s “EVERY GAME, transition to Pittsburgh a YOU’VE GOT TO BE lot easier is the presence of AT YOUR BEST.” a fellow Finn. “Jussi [Jokinen] has been a big help to me,” Maatta said. “He’s helped me get used to life here, and to the game and the system here. I’ve got to thank him.” Maatta (6-feet -2, 206 pounds) has big-time skill. But, despite piling up 70 points in 115 games with London, he doesn’t see himself as an offensive defenseman. “I try to be an all-around defenseman,” Maatta said. “Just do my job. Join the rush when there’s a spot for it, and play good in the defensive zone. I just need to get the puck to the forwards. With the forwards we have, they can do the rest.” As soon as Maatta was told he’d be staying past the nine-game mark, he called his parents and the family he lived with in London. Maatta hadn’t thought about his permanence of his NHL paycheck, though. He seemed taken aback when asked what he intended to do with the money. “Put it in my bank account,” Maatta said, chuckling. “Keep it somewhere safe.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PENGUINS ELITE

PROUD TO HOST NHL YOUTH CUP BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

The Pittsburgh Penguins organization is committed to the expansion of youth hockey in Western Pennsylvania, and they’ve helped membership in the region grow by 4,395 players — a 50.7 percent increase — in an eight-year span from 2005-13, according to USA Hockey. And the Penguins want those kids playing hockey in the area to thrive and be as competitive as possible — and have done everything they can to give them opportunities to do so. November 1-3 was a big weekend for the Penguins, the Penguins Elite youth hockey program and the National Hockey League (NHL) as they hosted the inaugural NHL Youth Cup. The event, presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, featured AAA youth hockey programs affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals. It featured some of the premiere talent playing at the AAA level, and was just the start of a fantastic tradition for NHLaffiliated hockey programs across North America that will continue to grow from year to year. “We think it was a great opportunity for young players in all six age groups to play in an elite-level tournament with other NHLaffiliated programs so early in the season,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “The Penguins Elite program, with generous support from the NHL, was proud to host three age groups and welcome them to Pittsburgh.” continued on page 128

There was 32 total teams playing over the weekend. Pittsburgh hosted the 1999, 2001 and 2003 age groups while Philadelphia hosted the 2000, 2002 and 2004 age groups. The tournament also featured some notable coaches and participants with NHL bloodlines, whose teams were here in Pittsburgh this weekend. Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma’s son Bryan plays on the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 1999 team, former Penguin Mark Recchi is an assistant coach with the 2001 team and Morehouse’s son plays on the 2003 team. The games were full of excitement and up and down action. There was a display of tremendous skill and which allowed for nail biting, down to the wire games. Each team battled over the three day period for a chance to lift the first ever NHL Youth Cup championship trophy. NHL YOUTH CUP CHAMPIONS BY AGE GROUP:

1999: Team Comcast 2000: Team Comcast 2001: New Jersey Devils 2002: Team Comcast 2003: Team Comcast 2004: Pittsburgh Penguins Elite

To the players’ surprise however, another trophy made its way to the championship games. The Hockey Hall of Fame was generous enough to bring the Stanley Cup into Pittsburgh and allow the players of each team playing in the championship a chance to be with it after the game. Players took pictures and cherished the moment. It was interesting to note that superstition is prevalent in all age groups as the participants were hesitant to touch the Stanley Cup in hopes of winning it one day as a member of the NHL! PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 143

MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. NHL REALIGNMENT By: Michelle Crechiolo

Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

YOUTH HOCKEY POINTERS FROM COACH SKATE, SKATE, SKATE

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!

THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING

Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”

GET TO THE NET

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN

We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 192

PENN STATE WHAT’S NEXT BY: MIKE PRISUTA

Their first season at the NCAA Division I level admittedly exceeded expectations in terms of what they were able to achieve and the way Penn State hockey was received. Now comes the next step in the process. Now comes Big Ten Conference hockey. Nittany Lions head coach Guy Gadowsky is as eager to find out how that’s going to play out as anyone. “We’re new,” Gadowsky pointed out at the Big Ten’s initial media day in September. “It’s a new conference. We’ve never been in a conference. So it’s very difficult for me to say ‘this is what you’re going to get.’ We don’t know. That’s part of the excitement about it.” Penn State went 13-14 against Division I opponents a season ago, during its first varsity campaign since the 1940s. It wasn’t so much the record as the manner in which it was achieved that generated such a buzz. Penn State defeated RIT, which was playing in the Frozen Four as recently as 2010, and Air Force, which was in the NCAA Tournament as recently as 2012. The Nittany Lions also managed victories over future Big Ten brethren Ohio State in the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center, Michigan State at Michigan State and Wisconsin continued on page 196

at Wisconsin (the Badgers went on to qualify for last season’s NCAA Tournament). In the process, Penn State established a reputation for competitiveness and physicality, for coming back when the situation dictated (the wins at Michigan State and Wisconsin were by 3-2 scores in games the Nittany Lions trailed 2-0) and for PATRICK KOUDYS playing a straight-ahead, grinding, in-your-face type of game (known in NCAA circles as “Guy Gadowsky hockey”). One of the goals this season is to build upon what was established a season ago. “You have to cultivate that consistently,” Gadowsky said. “We’re fortunate we have guys like [captain] Tommy Olczyk [Eddie Olczyk’s son], and others, setting a good standard for the type of team we want to be in areas that we can control.” Also on the agenda is EAMON MCADAM being better on defense. The additions of freshmen David Thompson and Mike Williamson and junior transfer Patrick Koudys (RPI) are expected to pay dividends there, as is the added year of experience gleaned last season by Luke Juha (sophomore), Mark Yanis (sophomore) and Nate Jensen (redshirt junior). “We should be a lot better back there,” Gadowsky said. Koudys (Washington, fifth round 2011), Williamson (Vancouver, sixth round, 2013) and freshman goaltender Eamon McAdam (New York Islanders, third round, 2013) are NHL draftees.

Penn State had only one such player last season, winger Max Gardiner (St. Louis, third round, 2010). The long-awaited MAX GARDINER opening of the $90 million Pegula Ice Arena has likewise given the Nits an air of legitimacy, as well as a state-of-the-art facility from which to operate this season. Penn State (2-3-1 through a 5-4 win on Nov. 1 at Robert Morris) also returns goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks) and its top 13 scorers from 2012-13. What it can do for an encore remains to be seen. “Last year we improved so much from the start of year to the end of year, it was night and day,” Gadowsky said. “I think we’ll improve a lot this year, too. “But come Dec. 6-7 we’ll have a lot of improving to do.” Penn State visits Wisconsin Dec. 6-7 to open its 20-game Big Ten Conference schedule. Four of the five teams in the conference Penn State has joined have combined to win 23 national championships (Michigan nine, Wisconsin six, Minnesota five and Michigan State three). Penn State will meet Robert Morris again at this year’s Three Rivers Classic on Dec. 27 at CONSOL Energy Center, then meet either Boston College or Bowling Green. Big Ten coaches picked Penn State to finish last (behind Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State) in a preseason poll. “The conference is going to be incredible,” Gadowsky said. “It’s going to be great for college hockey and it’s going to be an honor to play in it. “We understand very well how great the programs are in the Big Ten Conference. At the same time we need players that have that understanding but are hungry to accept the challenge. “Guys that just want to show up and arrive at some place that’s already established and ready to go; those aren’t the type of players that we need. We need the ones that are excited about the challenge and understand how great our opponents are. With that being said, we have no idea [what’s about to happen] but we’re looking forward to finding out.” 199

MARTIN DOING IT ALL FOR PENGUINS BY: MICHELLE CRECHIOLO

If you met Paul Martin randomly on the street and had to guess his profession, NHL hockey player probably wouldn’t be your first choice. Off the ice, the Minnesota native tends to be quiet, soft-spoken and unassuming. And while his style of play may be similar in that he isn’t especially flashy, make no mistake about his effectiveness and his value to this Penguins team. The man voted the team’s Defensive Player of the Year last year has carried over that season’s fantastic play to the start of this one, continuing to prove his worth as an all-around defenseman who logs important minutes in every situation. “I think he’s one of those guys where as a fan, if you go watch him once or twice, you might be like oh, what’s the big deal about this guy? But the more you see him, the more you appreciate him,” defensive partner Brooks Orpik said. “He plays every situation and a pretty consistent guy too. So a lot of times that goes under the radar just because he’s kind of opposite of [Kris Letang]. “Tanger is so dynamic. You can watch Tanger for 20 minutes and he jumps right out at you. That’s where those two guys [differ]. They’re both really good, but just completely different styles. I think Pauly likes it that way. It kind of fits his personality, too. That’s kind of the way he is off the ice.” Martin leads the Penguins in minutes per game, has been averaging over four minutes a contest on the power play on the team’s top unit and is also one of the first defensemen over the boards for the penalty kill with Orpik. “He logs a lot of important situations,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “Penalty kill, power play, other teams’ top lines or top offensive players with Brooks Orpik for the most part every night. Those are tough minutes and tough situations. … And [what he does is] not real flashy or highlight film, but he’s been huge for us.” 218

What’s especially notable about his work on special teams is that since Martin practices on the power play at team skates, he doesn’t get any work on the penalty kill. He has to rely on his knowledge of opposing players he’s accrued over his career as well as the coaching staff. “I think the coaches do a good job of scouting and letting us know what to expect,” he said. “I think being in the league for a while, you know players’ tendencies and what they like to do and for the most part, a lot of it is just the reading and reacting of trying to make a play when it’s there.” Martin may attend more team meetings and spend more time on the ice more than any other Penguin, but if it’s wearing him down at all, it certainly doesn’t show. “He’s a guy that a lot of times we laugh on the bench because it looks like he’s not even breaking a sweat,” Orpik said. “He’s just continued on page 220

219

continued from page 219

so efficient the way he plays.” To be honest, Martin said, skating as much as he does has the opposite effect on him. “I think as a defenseman or as anyone, you take a lot of pride in what you do,” he said. “And to have that accountability from the coaches and know that they put you in there in those situations, you definitely take a lot of pride in that. And almost sometimes the more you play, the better you feel.” But it’s not just that he’s on the ice a lot. It’s what he does when he’s there. Martin is the type of player that makes incredibly smart and cerebral plays on both ends of the rink that may not always be noticeable in their impact, are very much appreciated by his teammates and coaches. What his forwards appreciate the most about Martin is the way he handles the puck. Just watch him when he has it in the next game. No matter how much pressure or how little time he has to make a play, he never panics and throws it away. “He’s pretty calm with the puck,” captain Sidney Crosby said. “It doesn’t matter the situation, he shows a lot of poise back there. He’s really smart; it seems like he makes the right play every time. So I think he just brings that sense of calm to our team and can handle the puck and create a lot of plays for us.” The Penguins have had to deal with injuries to their back end early, with Letang missing the first nine games and Rob Scuderi now out indefinitely with a broken ankle. Martin is prepared to keep doing as much as the team needs him to do. “I feel good,” Martin said. “I’ve just been trying to build off last year and how we finished the season. So far it’s been good, they put me in a spot to play minutes. [Playing] with Brooks makes it easy too. And the team’s doing really well, at the top of our division, so that helps.”
