GAME NOTES BY: BOB GROVE
THE SERIES
The Toronto Maple Leafs make their first CONSOL Energy Center appearance of the season tonight against a Pittsburgh team they’ve already beaten once . Back on Oct. 26 at Air Canada Centre, a Kris Letang power-play goal and a shorthanded goal by Toronto’s Dave Bolland forged a 1-1 tie entering the third period. But Nazem Kadri scored just 1:26 into the third and Phil Kessel added a power-play goal with 2:55 to play as the Leafs went on to claim a 4-1 victory . James Van Riemsdyk added a pair of assists for Toronto, which has won five of the last nine games in this series (5-2-2) . . . Pittsburgh is 8-5-0 in its last 13 home games against Toronto, although the Leafs won the last meeting here last Jan . 23, when Van Riemsdyk had two goals and one assist in a 5-2 victory that ruined the Penguins’ home opener . Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored in that game, which remains the only time in the last six years that Pittsburgh lost a home game in which they both produced a goal . The only other time it happened was on Nov . 12, 2007 in a 3-2 loss to New Jersey . . . Pittsburgh is just 2-for-19 (10 .5 percent) on the power play in its last six home games against Toronto, while the Leafs have produced at least one power-play goal in 11 of their last 12 games in Pittsburgh (14-for-63, 22 .2 percent) . . . Malkin has 10 goals and 41 points continued on page 7

in 23 career games against Toronto, and the resulting 1 .78 points-per-game average is his highest against any team except Winnipeg (2 .16 in six games) . . . Crosby has 19 goals and 40 points in 26 career games against the Leafs (1 .54 points/game) . . . Kessel has 10 goals and 23 points in 27 career games against the Penguins . . . The teams meet again here Dec . 16 . . . Pittsburgh is 75-71-17-5 all-time against Toronto, including a 44-33-6-1 mark at home . THE PENGUINS
The Penguins have a long history of playing at home on Thanksgiving Eve, but they have struggled to win those games recently . Pittsburgh has won only two of its last eight Thanksgiving Eve home games (2-3-2 with one tie), its last victory a 3-1 decision over Montreal on Nov . 25, 2009 . The Penguins’ most recent such game came on Nov . 23, 2011, when Alex Pietrangelo scored at 4:07 of overtime to give St . Louis a 3-2 victory . . . The last time Toronto played here on Thanksgiving Eve was Nov . 27, 1985, when Doug Shedden had a pair of goals in a 7-1 Pittsburgh victory . . . Pittsburgh played Monday in Boston and begins a three-game road trip in Tampa Bay on Friday afternoon (4:00) . The Penguins play in Florida on Saturday and then on Long Island next Tuesday before returning home one week from tomorrow against San Jose . . . Brian Gibbons made Pittsburgh history last Monday night when he scored in the Penguins’ 3-1 home win over Anaheim. He became one of a select group of players to score on their first shot while playing in their first NHL game for the Penguins. Among the others to accomplish the feat were Aleksey continued on page 8
7
continued from page 7
Aleksey Morozov, Robbie Brown, Mario Lemieux, Steve Gatzos and Marc Chorney. Brown scored on his first two shots in a 5-4 loss to New Jersey on Oct. 21, 1987. . . The Penguins followed their victory over Anaheim by playing in Washington one week ago tonight, a game in which Marc-Andre Fleury made 18 saves for his 25th career shutout in a 4-0 victory. It was the Penguins’ first regular-season shutout in Washington in 30 years, since Denis Herron beat the Capitals by the same 4-0 score on Oct. 14, 1983. . . Crosby had one goal and two points and Malkin added two assists in the victory, which also saw Beau Bennett score his first goal of the season.
The Maple Leafs are beginning a three-game road trip that will take them to Buffalo on Friday night and Montreal on Saturday night. . . Toronto had points in three of its last four games (2-1-1) after a 5-2 home win over the New York Islanders on Nov. 19 in which former Penguin Trevor Smith had a goal and two assists and Kessel scored twice. Kessel was leading the Leafs in scoring at that point with 12 goals and 21 points in 21 games, and he also had a team-high 77 shots. . . Dave Bolland is out indefinitely for Toronto with a severed ankle tendon, while Tyler Bozak (hamstring) was also out last week. . . The Leafs scored four short-handed goals in October, most in one month since December, 2005. They shared the NHL lead in short-handed goals with Calgary (four) as of last week.

AROUND THE NHL BY: MIKE PRISUTA
EARLY START:
Dallas right winger Valeri Nichuskin’s goal on Nov . 3 at Ottawa made him the youngest player to net one for the Stars (18 years, 244 days) since Dave Archibald (18 years, 240 days) on Oct . 10, 1987 . Nichuskin was the Stars’ first pick (10th overall) in the 2013 Entry Draft .
RELIABLE ROOKIE:
Rangers backup goaltender Cam Talbot recorded his first career shutout on Nov . 16 at Montreal (1-0, 22 saves), extending Talbot’s career-starting run to 4-1-0 with a 1 .58 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage . Talbot became one of two goalies in Rangers history to hold opponents to two or fewer goals in his first five NHL starts (Lorne Chabot in 1926-27) and the first Rangers rookie to post wins in four consecutive appearances since Henrik Lundqvist (Feb . 1, 2006Feb . 10, 2006) .
STILL GOING:
Phoenix right winger Shane Doan’s first goal this season made him the sixth player in NHL history to score at least one goal for the same franchise for
18 consecutive seasons . Doan joined Steve Yzerman (Detroit, 22 seasons), Ray Bourque (Boston, 21), Joe Sakic (Quebec/ Colorado, 20), Mike Modano (Minnesota/Dallas, 20) and Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit, 20) in that exclusive club .
TOUGH WITH A LEAD:
Colorado’s 15-5-0 record through 20 games included a record of 13-0-0 when scoring first, an 11-0-0 mark when leading after the first period and a 13-0-0 slate when leading after the second period .
SHARPSHOOTERS:
Winnipeg’s shootout loss to Calgary on Nov . 18 was just the second setback for the Jets in a league-leading seven shootouts . Winnipeg remained tied with Washington in shootout victories (five) . Jets right winger Andrew Ladd scored his NHL-best sixth shootout goal in the Calgary decision .
FINALLY:
Flyers right winger Adam Hall snapped a personal 64-game goal drought with an empty-net effort on Oct . 19 against Ottawa .

as soup kitchens, shelters, after school programs and Meals on Wheels . As a result of Penguins fans generosity, this year’s drive produced over 782 pounds of food and $1,585 in cash donations . Since 1992, the team’s food drives have collected over 36,000 pounds of food and more than $33,000 . The following day, four Penguins players delivered free Thanksgiving turkeys and vegetables to 100 families at the Bedford Hope Center located in the Hill District . Penguins Paul Martin, Matt Niskanen, Beau Bennett and Robert Bortuzzo volunteered at the seventh annual Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution after the team’s practice session at CONSOL Energy Center . This year, the players had an assist delivering turkeys . Two youth hockey players from the Hill District, Arn Criswell and James Edwards, lent a hand and helped distribute food items to the area’s under privileged families . The Penguins and the Penguins Foundation extend sincere thanks and gratitude to all fans who contributed to the ongoing success of the team’s annual food drive, making this Thanksgiving holiday brighter for many local families .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER
Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org. Mario and his wife, Nathalie, and their four children live in Sewickley. For full bios, please visit pittsburghpenguins.com.

RON BURKLE CO-OWNER
Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. He was a member of the board of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), KB Home (NYSE: KBH), Kaufman & Broad S.A. (Euronext: KOF), Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO), the J. Paul Getty Trust, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Music Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year, the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year Award and the APLA Commitment to Life Award. DAVID MOREHOUSE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & PRESIDENT
David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He and his wife, Vanessa, have four children and live in Sewickley Heights.

It has been Dan Bylsma’s dream to represent USA Hockey ever since he watched the United States win gold in 1980s “Miracle on Ice” as a 9-year-old boy growing up in western Michigan. And while Bylsma was not able to wear his country’s red, white and blue as a player, he will get the opportunity now as a coach — on the biggest international stage. Bylsma will be the head coach of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will participate in the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, realizing a goal and an aspiration he has had for many years — 34, to be exact. “I can only come short on how it feels,” Bylsma said. “Really excited about the opportunity. I think as each moment passes, I’m more and more honored about the opportunity to wear the red, white and blue and to be the head coach of this hockey team and going over to Russia to win a gold medal. “I really think that the Olympic Games is such a special event for every athlete in every sport. So to be able to compete in the

Olympics, to be able to go over and compete for a gold medal, has been a dream for a long time. And as I became a coach and had eyed the U.S. team and that opportunity as a head coach, to have that now, just really looking forward to the opportunity and the honor to be a part of Team USA.” Bylsma has already achieved so much in his coaching career at just 42 years old, as he led the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup in his first season behind the bench, captured the 2011 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach and is overall one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. And Bylsma’s involvement with USA Hockey has grown considerably the last couple of years, as he grasped any opportunity to get involved with the team in any way he could — starting with being an assistant coach at the USA Hockey National Junior Development Camp two summers ago (which determined the makeup of the U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the 2012 World Junior Championship). Bylsma also observed Team USA at the 2012 World Championship and helped other coaches with their development at USA Hockey’s National Hockey Coaches’ Symposium in Washington, D.C. in August, 2012. But this marks a new challenge for Bylsma, as Sochi will be his first time representing USA Hockey in international competition. He plans to use his experience coaching superstars Sidney Crosby continued on page 65

and Evgeni Malkin as part of his approach to handling an Olympic roster filled with the best American-born hockey players. “Just thinking about it and some of the challenges of picking a team, getting such a short time with that team before you go and play such meaningful games right off the hop when you get to Russia, it’s going to be such a short time,” Bylsma said. “The challenges are going to be great. Not just for the travel getting over there, the time change, but really one or two practices going into that tournament. You think of some of those things. “But the quality of the players and the number of players, I think just drawing upon the challenges of coaching some of the great players we’ve had in Pittsburgh is going to be a part of having such great players and a big roster going into the Olympic Games.” Bylsma may have a few familiar faces on his roster going to Sochi, as defensemen Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin should be in the mix for consideration, as well as forward Beau Bennett. And Bylsma will be working alongside a familiar face on the bench as Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato will be at his side. Also to top it off, Penguins general manager Ray Shero was named associate general manager for Team USA. Shero spent eight years as assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators under Team USA general manager David Poile’s watch between 1998-2006 before taking over in Pittsburgh. Team Advisory Group — which selects players for all U. S. National Teams, including Olympic teams — since February 2007. Shero’s relationship with Poile and his relationship with Bylsma has already helped make the process run smoothly. “It’s already been a big factor in such a short period of time since finding out about being the head coach, working with David Poile as the GM,” Bylsma said. “Ray has been a guy I’m very comfortable with and obviously his experience with David Poile, he’s been a big part of our conversations already in terms of going forward with the summer, the orientation camp and the picking of the team and the players heading over for the Olympic Games. So that familiarity and Ray’s experience with me and me with Ray, that’s going to be a big part of our team and the management staff. It’s already been a big part.” It’s going to be quite a road to the Olympic Games, and Bylsma knows that. But he also knows he has to stay focused on the main goal, winning gold — and enjoying everything that happens on the journey. “I think every day, some new realization about being in the Olympics, being on Team USA, competing for a gold medal, comes to mind,” Bylsma smiled. “I think the Olympic Village, the Olympic Games, competing on that grand stage is just every day, what an honor it is to be a part of it. It’s an honor to be the head coach and just really looking forward to that opportunity. Every day is dawning on me.” 66

TWITTER Q&A
CHUCK KOBASEW @DANNYR11 What was it like winning the national championship at Boston College alongside Brooks Orpik & Rob Scuderi? #AskKobasew “I was there for a year with those guys. It was an amazing experience, I learned a lot from both of them. To be a part of a winning team, that was a lot of fun.” @OFFICIALNICOLE98 If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? #AskKobasew “Dubai would be interesting. It looks like a pretty neat place to check out. There are so many cool places overseas, definitely need to travel around over there.” @TAYLORD_143 Growing up, did you have a hockey hero? Did you have a chance to meet him throughout your career and if so, how did it go? #AskKobasew “Two favorite players growing up were [Steve] Yzerman and [Joe] Sakic. I was fortunate enough to play against both of them. That was pretty special being on the ice at the same time as those guys; you just try not to be in awe too much. At the time, they seemed like great people and I got the chance to meet Joe with the Avalanche organization and he is just first-class.”
@REGINASBISTRO On your off days what do you like to do in Pittsburgh? #AskKobasew “I haven’t done a whole lot besides go to the Pittsburgh Zoo with the family one day. Trying to figure out the area that I live in, I got to pick the guys brains a little bit and find out where the cool places are.” @P_DRISCOLL What is your favorite movie? #AskKobasew “Classic movies like Happy Gilmore. I really liked Into The Wild, but I don’t know if I have a favorite one. There are so many great movies. I never used to be a movie guy, but I’m enjoying watch those now with downtime.” 97

ASCAL DUPUI
PENGUINS PROFILE:
PASCAL DUPUIS BY: MARK MADDEN
When Pascal Dupuis went 12 games without scoring a goal, he didn't change. Didn't adjust. Dupuis just kept doing the same thing. “You know me,” Dupuis said after the Penguins defeated Nashville 4-1 at CONSOL Energy Center on Nov. 15. “I know one way to play. “Definitely, your confidence is affected a little bit for sure. Sometimes you won’t make the right decisions. But the way I think about my game and the way I try to do stuff won’t change. I’m not going to try dangling guys and playing one-on-one. “I know one way: Straight hockey. North-South. And that’s what I try to bring every night.” Dupuis’ straightforward approach harvested 20 goals during last season’s truncated 48-game schedule and 25 goals the season before. Against Nashville, it produced the Penguins' first goal. With the Penguins down 1-0 in the first period, Dupuis tied the game by netting a slapshot off a draw at 12:36. “It felt good,” said Dupuis, 34. “It got the team back in the game. “It was a big face-off play. [Brandon Sutter] battled on the faceoff, [Matt D’Agostini] got the puck back and the lane got open.” Dupuis’ blast rippled the twine behind Nashville goalie Marek Mazanec and the Penguins were on their way to breaking a three-game losing streak. continued on page 123
121
continued from page 121
Dupuis doesn’t need to score to contribute. He’s relentless, fast and versatile. Even though he’s a perfect fit on a line with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz, he can skate with anyone. Dupuis is solid on the penalty-kill and has compiled strong offensive numbers despite very little power-play time. After 20 games this season, the native of Laval, Quebec had three goals, nine assists and a plus-7 mark. The Penguins had scored just one goal in each of the three games prior to beating Nashville. Dupuis felt a solid performance by the Penguins had been long due. “This was one of those games where we knew it was a matter of time until we played the full 60 minutes the way we want to,” said the 6-foot-1, 205-pounder. The Penguins outshot the Predators 33-18. Dupuis was more impressed by the latter number than he was the former. “Yes, we did score four,” Dupuis said. “But if you look at their shots, we limited their chances. If you look at the scoring chances the three games before that, even though we only scored one goal [in each], we tripled the opponents’ scoring chances. But it was good for us and our confidence that those pucks went in tonight.” continued on page 125

The Penguins have put more emphasis on defensive-minded systems this season. The Penguins sometimes utilize a left-wing lock, a form of the neutralzone trap. “If we create turnovers in the neutral zone, we know we’ll take care of the puck offensively,” Dupuis said. “It’s a matter of getting it on our stick and creating turnovers and stopping them in the neutral zone. It gives us a better chance to play in their zone. We get quick transition. It’s the way we want to play.” Dupuis’ man-advantage time, as noted, is quite limited. But he nonetheless appreciated the power-play goal James Neal deflected home just 3:20 after Dupuis had tied the game. The tally gave the Penguins a lead they would never lose. The Penguins’ power play was 1-for-4 on the evening and scored a PPG for the fourth straight game. “The power-play goal was huge,” Dupuis said. “They’ve been moving the puck very well lately and it was good to see them get what we’ve talked about: A greasy goal. A goal right in front of the goalie, with two guys screening him.” Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

PITTSBURGH GIRLS THANKSGIVING CLASSIC Pittsburgh has seen many youth hockey tournaments in the area over the past several months. However, none have compared to the size and reach of the eighth annual Pittsburgh Girls Thanksgiving Classic which will be played November 29th – December 1st. A total of 66 teams and approximately 1,200 participants will be here in Pittsburgh to play hockey over the holiday break. Games will be played consistently over the weekend at RMU Island Sports Center, Iceoplex at Soutpointe and BladerunnersWarrendale. The classic will be played on the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels, and has age divisions ranging from U10 up to U19s. According to Brian Burke of the NHL, “No sport has developed more in the past 20 years than women's hockey”. To put this into perspective, in 1990 only 6,336 women were registered with USA Hockey. Today that number has swelled to 65,600 — a 935% increase! continued on page 128

This tournament is a testament to the growth of women’s hockey and the popularity of the sport across all boundaries. Another remarkable component of this tournament is that 45 of the 66 teams are from out of town including teams from Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Sarnia and United States teams from New Jersey, Michigan, New York and Wisconsin. Pittsburgh is quickly becoming a hot bed for hockey and an arena to showcase women’s hockey across the continent. “This annual Thanksgiving Classic is a great opportunity for our Penguins Elite teams to be able to host such a large hockey tournament in Pittsburgh where younger girls get the chance to compete against some of the best in the area”, says Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Director of Operations Kathy Pippy. “Ten years ago there were no girls' program in the region, and today, with the support of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dick's Sporting Goods we have grown to develop girls' teams’ U10 up to U19. The future is very bright for girls' hockey in Pittsburgh!” The Thanksgiving tournament continues to grow from year to year and is becoming a great holiday tradition in our area. It also serves as a great platform to showcase our elite women amateur hockey players in the area. For more information on the Thanksgiving Classic please visit www.pittsburghpenguinselite.com.

PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. The Elite programs, both boys and girls, are finding tremendous success on the ice as the U18 boys and U14 girls were Tier 1 Elite League Champions this past year. The U14 girls were also bronze medalists at the USA Hockey National Championships. In the National Championships all three eligible boys teams (Midget Major, U14, U16) reached quarterfinals. “Our goal is to make Pittsburgh Penguins Elite the best AAA hockey program in the country,” said David Morehouse, CEO and President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “But it isn’t just about winning games and championships. is one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the US. “DICK’S Sporting Goods is thrilled to be the title sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program. At DICK’S we believe sports matter and are committed to helping young athletes achieve their goals of playing at the highest level,” said Lauren Hobart, DICK’S Sporting Goods Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Our involvement with the Penguins Elite program is a great opportunity for us to support the growth of youth hockey in our hometown of Pittsburgh.” A tribute to the program’s success has been the players who have moved on to compete in college hockey across the country. This past year, the program has graduated eight girls to NCAA Division-III schools and two girls to Division-I (Syracuse, Boston College) totaling 13 girls currently playing Division-I college hockey. On the boys side, several Division-I commitments have occurred over the past 12 months, including Dartmouth, Ohio State and Miami (Ohio). The Elite boys programs have 47 former players currently competing in either college or junior programs. The boys teams practice and play home games at RMU Island Sports Center. The girls teams practice and play home games at both RMU Island Sports Center and Shadyside Academy. Both boys and girls also hold practices and games at the CONSOL Energy Center.

HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. If you are interested in donating to the Heads Up Pittsburgh program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 136

HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICK’S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICK’S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Recently the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Highmark have partnered together for Project PowerPlay, which will build 12 continued on page 140

dek hockey rinks throughout Allegheny County over a three-year period and allow local residents to play dek hockey for free. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nation’s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. If you are interested in donating to the Project Power Play program or for more information, please visit the Penguins Foundation website at pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.org or contact us at info@pittsburghpenguinsfoundation.com . 143

Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK COLOR ANALYST
Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or IceTime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts Bob Grove’s Hot Stove on Penguins Radio 24/7.

NHL REALIGNMENT By: Michelle Crechiolo
Last season, Pittsburgh finished first in the Atlantic Division, ahead of the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, Philadelphia and New Jersey. This upcoming season, the Penguins will be looking to defend that title against those same teams plus three new ones — Carolina, Columbus and Washington — in the newly created Metropolitan Division. As part of the NHL’s realignment plan that will be implemented for the 2013-14 campaign, the league will be in a more geographically appropriate two-conference, four-division format with 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 teams in the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference divisions (Metropolitan and Atlantic — which will now consist of Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and Toronto) have eight teams in each while the Western Conference divisions (Central and Pacific) have seven teams in each. HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…
In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.
The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.
And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION
The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164

NEW ADDITIONS: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS
The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164
teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

CAROLINA HURRICANES
Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168

PLAYOFFS
Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. Regardless, the playoffs are now heavily based on divisional standings while before, only the division winner got a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. EASTERN CONFERENCE TOP

NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

No matter what level you are playing, skating is everything when it comes to hockey. However, skating isn’t just about being able to move backwards or forwards. Change of direction is critical when your team is on the transition from defense to offense, or vice versa. That makes being able stop, turn or pivot on a dime and quickly accelerate out of a start position as much a key to being a good skater as straightahead speed. Work hard to improve your skating when you can!
THE IMPORTANCE OF PASSING
Pay attention to your passing. Nothing moves the puck up ice quicker than a tape-totape pass. A good passing team is able to maintain possession of the puck for long stretches, putting itself in position continued on page 184

to generate more offense. What separates the great passers from the good ones is not only are they able to deliver the puck to a teammate when he or she is wide open, but they are able to use the boards and make area passes to teammates in traffic. “Practice perfect passing.”
GET TO THE NET
Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.
WORK HARD AND HAVE FUN
We all want to be the best players we can be and help our team win each time we step on the ice. The easiest way to achieve this — WORK HARD EVERY TIME you step on the ice because work ethic is a huge key to being a successful hockey player. Just as important as working hard is ENJOYING THE GAME. Hockey is just that — a game — which means it is something we do to entertain ourselves. When you are having fun on the ice, chances are good that you are playing your best.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. In addition to his annual trek to the NHL All-Star Game, Iceburgh makes annual appearances at the Mascot Olympics held in Orlando, FL. If you would like to request an Iceburgh appearance at your next event, please complete the online form by visiting the community section of pittsburghpenguins.com. 192

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EJ BY: MIKE PRISUTA
With each victory this season head coach Dan Bylsma creeps ever closer to the Penguins’ franchiserecord total of 232. The present record holder isn’t surprised that number has stood the test of time. “The GMs are pretty smart,” Eddie Johnston observed. “Usually, when [a head coach] would get close to my record they’d get rid of the head coach. “No, it’s great; Dan has done a terrific job and he’ll go by that, no question.” Bylsma achieved career victory No. 215 with the Penguins on Nov. 21 at Washington (4-0). Johnston’s career behind the Penguins’ bench was characterized mostly by his ability to get more from less, including a couple of near-misses in what would have been profound postseason upsets. continued on page 196

“The first year I came here we had 23 guys in training camp,” Johnston remembered. “All 23 guys made the team. “And we made the playoffs that year.” That initial season, the 1980-81 campaign, was the first memorable “almost” for EJ. The Penguins (30-37-13, 73 points) took on the St. Louis Blues (45-18-17, 107 points) in the first round. They bowed out via a 4-3 double-overtime loss at St. Louis in Game Five. “Mark Johnson hit both posts in overtime,” Johnston recalled. The next spring the Penguins exited the 1981-82 first round via a 4-3 overtime loss at the two-time defending-champion New York Islanders. The Islanders had amassed 118 regular-season points to the Penguins’ 75. “Mike Bullard had a couple chances in overtime,” Johnston said, reminiscing. “They ended up winning two more Stanley Cups after that.” The Pens were identifiable by their power-play prowess back then. They netted 272 power-play goals over a three-season span. “Thanks to Tommy Heinsohn [of the Boston Celtics] I learned all the picks and we ran picks all the time,” Johnston said. “One day he just showed me a little bit about it, I started to put it into hockey and it worked out terrific.” Johnston’s first tour of duty behind the Pittsburgh bench ended after an 18-53-9 campaign in 1982-83. Following the 1983-84 season Johnston, who had since become the Penguins’ general manager, announced the drafting of Mario Lemieux with the first overall pick. “Thank God we did because if we didn’t we’d have been in a little bit of trouble,” Johnston said. Johnston the GM resisted some outlandish trade offers for the selection but never seriously considered them. continued on page 199

“I was fortunate enough to play with a guy named Bobby Orr [in Boston],” Johnston pointed out. “When you see those types of players come along, they’re special players. “People never gave Mario credit for his defensive play. He was an incredible defensive player. In our own end, down low, nobody was better in the league. They always talk about his offensive play but his defensive play was tremendous. “We were offered all three Stastny brothers [Peter, Marian and Anton of the Quebec Nordiques]. Lou Nanne [of the Minnesota North Stars] offered me all of his picks. One of the guys associated with Mr. [Edward J.] DeBartolo [the Penguins’ owner] wanted me to trade our pick to Philadelphia. I was very emphatic. I told Mr. DeBartolo, ‘I’m not trading him. A player like this comes along once in a lifetime.” Lemieux was chasing his third Stanley Cup when Johnston returned as the Penguins’ head coach for the 1993-94 season. Johnston’s second tour of duty included a run to the Eastern Conference Final in 1995-96. To get there the Penguins had to first survive the Washington Capitals in the opening round. That series included a four-overtime thriller during which Johnston was struck by a puck but kept coaching. “I picked up 17 stitches,” he said. “I got hit in the head with the puck. They found there was nothing up there so they let me go. “Petr Nedved got the game-winning goal.” Johnston wound up with a record of 232-224-60 in the regular season and 22-24 in 46 playoff games as head coach of the Penguins. Now 78 after celebrating a birthday on Nov. 24, Johnston still remembers the job fondly. “I just loved to see our team improve from training camp on,” he said. “You teach, you learn, you make adjustments during the game. That’s one of the pleasures I had from coaching.” 199

PITTSBURGH VS CHICAGO FEBRUARY 14, 2007
The Penguins battled the Blackhawks in a 2007 Valentine’s Day showdown at Mellon Arena, selling out the Igloo for the first of what would eventually become a string of more than 300 consecutive sellouts. Pittsburgh claimed the contest 5-4 in a high-scoring affair that ended on Evgeni Malkin’s stick in a shootout.

MARIO ANNOUNCES NEW ARENA DEAL MARCH 13, 2007
The Buffalo Sabres paid a visit to Pittsburgh on March 13, 2007. But before the contest commenced, Mario had an announcement to make. Lemieux took to the Igloo ice with a microphone and a smile, as he proclaimed: “Your Pittsburgh Penguins will remain right here in Pittsburgh, where they belong!” The deal was finally done and the path was paved for what would eventually become only the second home the Penguins have ever known, CONSOL Energy Center. continued on page 207

2008 PRINCE OF WALES MAY 18, 2008
It was party time in Pittsburgh on May 18, 2008, as the Penguins sent the Philadelphia Flyers packing. The Pens dominated Game Five of the Eastern Conference Final 6-0, punching their ticket to play for the Cup for the first time in 16 years. Sidney Crosby posed with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and the Prince of Wales trophy, careful not to touch the then 82-year-old treasure as he had his eyes set on another prize.

RAISING THE BANNER OCTOBER 2, 2009
Few moments in sports resonate as great as capturing a championship. Such elusive accomplishments are celebrated, commemorated, and decorated to the highest magnitude. Prior to the early October division collision between the Penguins and Rangers, the curtain fell revealing Lord Stanley’s Cup situated at center ice in all its glory. The banner was raised as players and fans gazed at what represented Pittsburgh’s third chance to savor the silver.

LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME AT MELLON ARENA APRIL 8, 2010
Nostalgia was running full throttle at Mellon Arena for a mid-April match-up with the Islanders in 2010. Players from more than 40 years of the Penguins past were welcomed back before the Islanders welcomed seven goals into their net at the final regular season game in Mellon Arena history. MARIO CHRISTENS CONSOL ENERGY CENTER AT INAUGURAL GAME OCTOBER 7, 2010
CONSOL Energy Center served as center stage for first time as the Penguins turned the page on a new chapter of their history October 7, 2010. Mario Lemieux stood in the spotlight at center ice, christening the glistening surface with ice from the Igloo prior to the inaugural game. Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy earned his place in the history books, becoming the first Penguin to tickle the twine, with a little help from his friends Paul Martin and Kris Letang.

Marc-Andre Fleury took down the Tampa Bay Lightning in CONSOL Energy Center’s first postseason action. The Flower flourished in net, denying all 32 Tampa shots on the way to posting his fifth career playoff shutout. The Penguins claimed a 3-0 victory in their first fray against the Lightning in the post-season. continued on page 212

SIDNEY CROSBY RETURNS FROM CONCUSSION NOVEMBER 21, 2011
Sidney Crosby spent nearly a full calendar year recovering from the worst injury of his career before ending his extended absence on November 21, 2011. He wasted little time getting reacquainted when he buried a backhander behind Islanders goalie Anders Nilsson early in the first period. Anxious to make up for lost time, he added another goal and a pair of assists before the night was through and the Penguins pummeled the Islanders 5-0.

FIRST PLAYOFF SERIES WIN AT CONSOL ENERGY CENTER MAY 24, 2013
The Penguins waited three years to clinch their first playoff series on CONSOL Energy Center ice. On May 24, 2013 victory was theirs and handshakes were aplenty as they excused the Ottawa Senators from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the conference semi-final round. A 6-2 win sealed the Sens fate and propelled the Penguins into the Conference Final for the first time since 2009.

NUMBER TEN BELONGS TO YOU Number ten belongs to you. We have enjoyed countless memories and moments that made us smile. We shared tears of joy as we celebrated a championship and endured disappointment in seasons that ended all too soon. Our hearts were heavy as we said farewell to our first home, while we grew fond pondering the exciting possibilities that lay ahead. Most importantly, we did all those things together. Frozen Moment #10 is your favorite Penguins memory. Take a minute to recollect, remember what it was, where you were, who you were with… Thanks for joining us on the journey, the pleasure has been ours.

NHL REVEALED WILL OFFER UNIQUE LOOK AT PENS Fans first got a behind-the-scenes look at the Penguins when they were featured on HBO’s initial 24/7: Road to the NHL Winter Classic back in 2011. That has continued with the team-produced In the Room, and next year, fans will get an even deeper look as the Pens will be featured in NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other. NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other is a seven-part series being produced by Bristow Global Media Inc. that will begin in mid-January and will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of NHL stars both on and off the ice as they play in 2013-14 regular-season games, including the four Coors Light NHL Stadium Series games. The Pens will be playing one of those against the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field on March 1 at 8 p.m. on NBC. The cameras will also follow the stars to the Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia, and back in February. That Olympic 218
experience, which only happens once every four years, is what truly makes this a season like no other and what makes this series so unique — especially for Pittsburgh. The Penguins have a number of players and staff members involved in the Olympics for their respective countries — most notably superstar centers Sidney Crosby (Canada) and Evgeni Malkin (Russia). This series will follow the changing dynamic between all of these men as they go from teammates to rivals and back to teammates again. “The interesting thing is that we’re going to be involved, unlike 24/7, in this transition where players like Crosby and Malkin will be teammates early in our series,” explained executive producer Ross Greenburg, who also served as an executive producer on 24. “And then we’ll be going over to Sochi and they will find themselves across the ice from each other, then will re-join each other in March as they look towards the playoffs as teammates again. I think this series will give us some opportunities they didn’t have on 24/7.“ The series will air on NBCSN in the U.S. and CBC in Canada, networks that are rightsholders for the NHL and the Sochi Winter Games. In Canada, the series will be re- broadcast on Sportsnet. SOLDIER FIELD What also makes Saturday, March 1, 8:00 PM this particular series unique is it will be more player-centric than 24/7 ever was. “In the two years we’ve done it to date, the focus of 24/7 really ends up pivoting around the coach, who’s at the center of all the team’s activities,” NHL chief operating officer John Collins said. “We went into this contemplating that we really wanted to celebrate the players and have more of the focus on the players.” continued on page 220

“I THINK THAT’S SOMETHING THAT EVERYBODY ENJOYS. AS A FAN, YOU WANT TO SEE THAT STUFF.” SIDNEY CROSBY
“We are going to take this through the lens of the player to get in and get embedded with these teams,” Greenberg added. “Though Dan Bylsma will be heard from in between periods and at times in the series — and we may do a story or two on him as he prepares for the Olympics coming out of his games in January and early February — for the most part, we’ll start off through the lens of the players. We’ll get into the team and what happens with the Pittsburgh Penguins throughout this special season as we follow the storylines of the individual star players. And if there are other members of the team that pop up as stories, we will pounce on those as well.” Crosby has been involved with all of the Penguins’ all-access series to date, and likes the idea of the newest one he’ll be a part of. “I think that’s something that everybody enjoys,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “As a fan, you want to see that stuff. “I know my friends and family, they love that stuff. They love getting a peek inside the [locker] room or seeing guys outside of their normal stuff, the bench stuff and in-game stuff. That’s good for everybody.”
